Changes in Store For Tuberville's Staff?

It looks like the season's failure is catching up to some of those on staff.

Bruce Feldman Hearing Tommy Tuberville canned three assistants today at Texas Tech: OL coach Matt Moore, Otis Mounds & Sam McElroy.

I'm not sure if these are good moves or not. I don't like change just for the sake of change. But I am somewhat pleased that SOMETHING is being done. Are these the right moves? Time will tell.

are you kidding 92?

He needed some scapegoats so he got rid of a Leach holdover (moore), McElroy (dont really know enough to comment), and a guy whose only purpose in hiring was to pull in a recruit who didnt even end up coming to Tech anyways (Mounds). It makes the fanbase think changes are being made, when in reality this coach has his head so far up his……..and the same shitty product will be on the field again next year. Standard move.

I dunno...

Moore was a man-blocking guy, and NB seems to want to run a zone scheme.

Mounds was the secondary coach… nuff said.

McElroy coached DLs, specifically interior linemen who were a problem as well.

If Tuberville is going to try to improve the coaching staff, I think these changes make sense. Moore seems to be the only regrettable firing… in part because he’s a Leach hold-over, and in part because he was a good coach when we were running a man scheme. I hope he can find quality replacements by the time spring ball rolls around.

There are reports that ML has already tabbed an OL coach at WSU

Clay McGuire has supposedly been hired as O line coach, or at least that’s what the press has been saying since yesterday. McGuire was a player and graduate asst under Leach, and ML talked about him being one of the most determined players he ever had in his book..

McGuire had been the running backs and special teams coach under Ruff at ECU.

This could be a case of really bad timing from Moore’s viewpoint. And maybe WSU’s.

Interesting...

that Leach has been at WSU a short time and already hired a number of people. We are approaching Tub’s third year when he is still making changes.

Around here football is bigger than the state of Texas!

by Distant Raider on Dec 10, 2011 1:17 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not so sure

about Moore to Wash St. Leach has already hired Jim Mastro for RBs, Dennis Simmons for outside receivers, Eric Morris (the Elf) for inside receivers, and Clay McGuire (apparently for the OL). Counting Leach, that’s 5 coaches on the offensive side of the ball. Can’t remember right off hand how many a team is allowed to have.

by Techsaninutah on Dec 9, 2011 5:21 PM CST up reply actions

Leach already hired

Clay McGuire, former Tech running back, to coach the offensive line at Wazzu. McGuire was on Ruffin’s staff at ECU as RB coach and worked with special teams. He was also on Leach’s staff at Tech as special teams coordinator.

Not all that bad

McElroy and Mounds can split as far as I’m concerned but Moore IMO was a good OL coach. DL and secondary were beyond bad this season so those are good fires.

I’m hoping Tuberville already has those holes filled with new hires for recruiting sake.

I think there is an 80% chance that firing these folks was the right move.

Coach mac (Sam mc Elroy)

Can coach his ass off. Prunty is a recruiter and not tactician. None of this matters, as the lead dog has no clue what he is doing.
We gave up the real captain for captain hazelwood and this program is the Exxon Valdez. This is his mo and surprises nobody. The point can be made that chad deserves to hire his staff. We all deserve better than this.

Can you say more about McElroy?

I’m on the outside looking in, but I haven’t seen much to write home about as far as the DLs are concerned. I know he’s got a good record as an HC, but what has he done as a position coach at Tech?

Work and work ethic. I have met him twice, but as far as his abilities…coaches that cross his path will tell you he is very able. We also know Moore is able.

Well my sources have confirmed that McElroy is indeed canned.

This saddens me, because as you said the guy can coach his ass off. He did a great job at TSU, and could’ve wound up being a great D1 DC in my humble opinion (better than Chad for sure!). Now he’ll never get that job because there will be some other position opened up within Tech for him so him and his family don’t have to move.

by RdrPwr on Dec 9, 2011 3:40 PM CST up reply actions

So Far

Tubby has been all about recruiting. So I have to think these moves are for that purpose. If he pulls the trigger on these changes ( and it’s still not final), you can bet that he’s got some assistants in mind from his “backyard” in Mississippi and Alabama. And he probably already has some recruits targeted, just like Blake Dees last year.

AirRaid running scheme...

Leach only ran two plays when he was here: inside and outside ZONE, not a man blocking scheme. That’s a lame excuse the apologists use to excuse away the lack of production Tuby is getting from our line. Plus, Matt Moore was the Oline coach here when our QB hardly ever got touched! Now, we can’t get a pass off without getting creamed. Moore may be getting sacrificed, but it’s pretty damn clear that whatever schemes TT and NB brought with them are what’s the problem. I just wish these “staff changes” would start with him!

j/k… but his pass pro was man with backs picking up blitzing backers and dbs… don’t know what else to say about that… one of the things NB came out and said early on was that he wanted to switch to a zone scheme… maybe oldschool can back me up on this… he’s commented on it before

Wall/man scheme?

I assume that is what you mean…but even that is zone “3 for 2/3” on one side with man/“back for blitzes” on the other. I’m pretty sure that it wasn’t a “big on big” straight man scheme. Anywho. I apologize for calling you a Tuby fan, Lord knows that would piss me off more than damn near anything at this point.

by PBK on Dec 9, 2011 7:47 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Well...

Tubs has to fire somebody, unless he fires himself first (which I wish he’d do). Still, Moore seems to be one of his better coachs. It may be better for Moore to go somewhere else, though, since this coaching regime looks to be headed for further disaster. Wish Moore could’ve ended up at WSU—maybe Ruffin could take him.

by djn on Dec 9, 2011 8:15 PM CST reply actions

As with all head coaches after a poor season

Tuberville is pointing fingers to someone other than himself. Moore is a questionable fire because the o-line was way better than the d-line, linebacking or d-backs. I do hope there are replacements in Tub’s mind as it will be tough to intice anyone right now to switch allegiancies. I agree with candyroll, though. He will probably fish around in his old pond to find his next hires. I really don’t think he has had the time to become very familiar with anyone in Texas or the surrounding area to warrent hiring them. Regardless of who he brings in, a winning record next year and a bowl berth are all that can save him. With all the other Big-12 teams looking to be improved next year Tech may find it very difficult to pull out any wins on the road and few of them at home. I am pretty much expecting a similar record next year to what Tech had this year. I actually hope I am wrong and Tech gets to 8 or 9 wins……………hope…………..

yes

What assistant coach worth his salt is going to take a “one year job” at TT?
The guys with those skill sets know this thing is going south too quickly to be turned around…and chances are they’ll be on the streets looking for a job next year after Tuberville gets fired.

So what we’ll get is some HS coach or GA looking to make a move up to the college level…..and will once again be learning on the job.

then again, its troubleville, so its to be expected. He’s rapidly running out of excuses.
3-9 for next year is sounding optimistic.

But we’re low enough already that it really wouldn’t matter that much…
Kind of like dropping from the 114th ranked defense (2010) to the 115th ranked defense (2011)…
What difference does it really make…?
