Recruiting on the South Plains | DE Branden Jackson
We're moving on to the second of three defensive end commits, Branden Jackson (the others being Desimon Green and Cooper Washington). I think the only profiles that DTN lacks is Washington, DT Leon Mackey, DT Donte Phillips and ATH Otis Wright. Let's get to it.
The Measurables:

The Player Speaks: Prior to the season, Jackson talked about moving to inside linebacker and almost quit his high school team:
Was there a time when you thought basketball was your No. 1 sport? That's funny. Really last year, I thought basketball was going to be my sport. I went into football season and didn't think I would be a big part of the offense. Then they told me I would play middle linebacker and I had never played that before. I said, 'Man, I'm going to quit.' I thought I'd work hard to get a scholarship for basketball. But after playing linebacker, I started loving it.
And yes, the picture in the linked article show Jackson playing basketball and this year he's averaging 12 points and 8 rebounds a game for his high school team.
And before the high school year started, Jackson was interviewed by a local television station and he does a good job of answering the reporter's fast-ball questions.
The Video: The only free video can be found on Jackson's ESPN profile. Go check it out.
Scouting Report: The thing that jumps out at me is that I think he's much more athletic than Green or Washington and for me, it's not really close, but Washington would be second on that list. Anyway, as Jackson mentioned above, he wasn't real keen on moving to middle linebacker, and it's strange to see such a big and athletic guy playing middle linebacker and he's probably not ideally suited to play middle linebacker. Still, you can see Jackson's athleticism really shine playing quarterback on his film and he's fast. He has that long stride that probably makes him look not quite as fast, but that stride makes up a lot of ground. I just love this type of athlete as he can probably do a number of things for a defense.
Branden, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!

It appears that The DEs, well all the signees this year, are more athletic overall than what we have seen from the players signed in the past. What that translates to is a shorter time frame for them to learn and get on the field and be effective. With that, we can anticipate, I think, a Tech team that will improve quickly over previous teams. Jackson has a lot of quickness and if he can put on about 30-40 pounds and keep about the same quickness, he will cause a lot of havoc for opposing offenses. Bookended with other athleic DEs will be huge in the overall scheme of things. The more I read about these commits, the more excited I am for the future of Texas Tech football.

NFL body
good basketball skills= good coordination and explosiveness. With his height, a little home cooking, and some weightroom time- this kid should make a big impact.
Just keep in mind- the really good teams play these types of guys as juniors and seniors. I think we need to be patient and keep our expectations realistic for these 18 year olds.

Big Kid
This is exactly what we need as a DE. Sort of like Scott Smith body type we witnessed last season. Jackson look to have lots of athletic abilities which will make him even more valuable.

Speaking of Scott Smith
Have we heard anything about the aforementioned Mr. Smith? Is he out of Tub’s dog house? How much eligibility will he have left? For a couple of games last year, before the suspension, he looked very good!
Sits out 4 games....

Is sitting out 4 games this fall a fact?
If I remember correctly, Tuberville said in Oct Smith was being suspended for the remainder of the season. Now see posting like this that indicate he is suspended for 12 games – What’s the source for the 8+4?
Perhaps
i picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue….but there were multiple posts that was the case. The source is my aging memory.

Smith is still around...
Sounds like he is working to stay a part of the team and to get back onto the field next season.
I cannot remember the context or the coach, but one of the defensive coaches that was interviewed during or just after signing said he would be back…oh, actually it was on the offical site’s signing day comments from the football offices.

And just in case anyone was worried, Jackson says he’s qualified academically:
McKeesport defensive lineman Brandon Jackson, who signed with Texas Tech, said reports are untrue that he has not yet qualified academically to be eligible as a freshman. Jackson said his SAT score is high enough.
