Recruiting on the South Plains | DT Donte Phillips

Thank the deity of your choice for Texas Tech signing a high school defensive tackle. The Red Raiders need a few more defensive tackles and we must all hope that Leon Mackey qualifies and Donte Phillips redshirts adds some strength to a solid frame. Let's get to it.

So much more good-good after the jump.
The Player Speaks: It's amazing. I looked for 30 minutes and couldn't really find an article or anything about Phillips. As of right now, I've got nothing.
Video:
Scouting Report: Things I like are Phillips size and speed. For a guy that's his size, Phillips can really move and for a guy like this to be added on the last day, after possibly receiving an offer from Penn St. (maybe greyshirt maybe a real offer) then I think this is a decent add. Phillips was originally an Indiana commit and after the coaching change he backed off that commitment, which opened the door for Texas Tech. Still, I find it strange that a defensive tackle with his size and speed doesn't get a few more offers, but I'm not complaining.
What I don't like is Phillips essentially stands up on every play and simply over-powers the offensive line. He's got to work on technique, but that's what a redshirt season is for is to get your rear whipped and start to figure things out. Still, despite maybe not having the best technique, from a prospect standpoint and taking a chance on a kid, this is the kind of defensive tackle prospect that you hope makes it in the program and is able to contribute in a couple of years.
Donte, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!

What I saw
or rather didnt see, is him standing up most plays. Quite the opposite I saw his hand on the ground 90% of the time, if not all the time.
What I do agree with you on is the fact that he looks used to relying on his athletic agilitly and strength to beat opposing linemen. That $h¡t aint gonna fly against ut’s guards and tackles. This kid will need to learn technique. redshirt!

I think by "stands up" I think Seth is referring to what happens after the snap.
He does tend to go upright right on the snap a lot. Then again, if he can be that good with poor technique at that level – it does lend itself to great upside with proper coaching at the next level. While his technique is pretty shoddy, he certainly appears to have the kind of movement and span you’d want. IMHO the guy could probably learn the needed technique pretty quickly. The rest of the package looks solid, on film any way.
This is what I meant. He’s in a 3-point stance, ball snaps and he seems to stand straight up. He’s gotta get some leverage.

He has a great motor and doesn't quit...the rest he can learn

slow
im not too impressed. At 255 lbs. His 40 needs to be under 5 if he wants to compete at the next level.

Well, I screwed that up. Rivals has him running a 4.54, which seems completely unbelievable. I must have transposed the numbers. I didn’t think he was slow in the film, but if he was playing against a bunch of Seth C’s then he’s really slow.

That's freakishly fast
if you’re able to get out of a 3-point that fast, technique might not have been a factor in high school..

explosive
I agree, on film, he’s playing a LOT faster than 5.0/40 and I love his explosiveness at the point of impact – something I didn’t really see with a couple of the others.
We need the length at Defensive tackle..
To be fair he’s getting double team on a lot of plays. Yeah he stands up a lot. But he doesn’t quit running. Notice he’s the 2nd tackler on a lot of plays i.e. just keeps moving due to being blocked and finds the ball carrier. Give him a year with Coach McElroy and he will be fine. http://www.texastech.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/mcelroy_sam00.html I like the tipped passes mucho.
"do routine things routinely"
The technique will come with time if he's going to contribute
What I’m liking other than of course the raw athleticism is his nose for finishing plays even if he can’t necessarily get to the QB. He comes off blocks and pursues plays along the line of scrimmage, gets his hands up, and he’s going to be big and strong enough to handle double teams. Seems like he enjoys breaking fools enough to be motivated in learning that not getting his ass handed to him in D1 ball means he’ll want to play with better leverage. Welcome to the team, Mr Phillips, here’s your redshirt and your hernia belt.
It doesn't matter how fast he is...
if we stay in the 3-4. It matters a little if we go 4-2-5. What matters in both is how strong he is.

annoying
“GIT” doesn’t help the TARD mentality bestowed on us from other schools.
I know, its all in good fun, maybe I’m missing the big picture, it’s just down right annoying. Spell it right if possible.. I realize I’m only one person and you’ll leave it, but jeez, you HAVE to see the NON humor in it..,,Put on your Get R done T and head to Applebees for a refreshing family dinner. Wear a tanktop.

No. It’s obviously intentional and I’ve been doing it for 2 years now.

And if you think DTN or my writing perpetuates a stereotype then I’ll walk away, but I typically don’t listen to what other people say about me or my school and most fans make fun of other schools so they could also make fun or me for unintentionally using the word “your” when I should have used the word “you’re” (I did that yesterday, but corrected it later). Which is worse? If a rival fan is going to say, “Hey, did you hear that Double-T Nation intentionally uses the word ‘git’ instead of ‘get’?” I think I’ll be able to live with myself.

Tech has a higher percentage of fans who actually went to college than our biggest rivals
T-shirt fans in glass houses shouldn’t be throwing stones in the first place.
What is "Good-Strong" and why is there always so much more of it after a jump?
To be fair...
we probably also have a higher percentage of fans who wear tank tops to Applebees, too.

The 1st time I heard Applebees associated with white trash was the "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby" movie
It seems like a clone of Benngans, TGIF Fridays & Chili’s to me.

for real?
i think we all know what he meant. as they use to say when i was a kid, “Take a chill pill”. Seth C puts a lot of time into this and we should appreciate what he does. The goal is to communicate something, which i think we all understood.

info
I’m a wisconsin fan/ indiana grad but after seeing this post I felt the need to shed some light on this. First, if you simply google Phillips you can find all the info you need on him. It says above that he runs a 5.4 40 but that’s completely incorrect, his 40 is around the 4.8s to low 4.9s and last january ran a 4.54 shuttle time which probably has improved from that time. His espn profile has been the same since his 8th grade year of middle school, many of us at indiana brought that into question too but that was cleared up by a member of the espn staff. You all got a steal, if Phillips had not committed to IU so early and stopped going on the camp/combine circuit this kid would have many more offers then he did, in one of his articles it stated that the penn state staff didn’t even know who he was until he decommitted and he still came away with an offer in that short amount of time. This is a legit 6 3 260 kid with a motor, good feet, and if you’ve seen his interviews definatly has the right mindset. On top of that his athleticism is ridiculous. His main concern is staying low but every lineman has that issue coming our of high school, in phillips case injurys had a lot to do with that battling a turf toe that he suffered while at michigan states camp (he didn’t attend wisconsins because of that injury which is a big reason why no offer) and another ankle injury, both which plagued him the entire season but solely watching film you could never tell. If you really critique his technique you’ll find that phillips steps with his wrong foot sometimes which causes him to rise fast at times, the times he steps correctly he fires off like a bullet. I coached against Phillips in high school ( he played for one of the top 3 teams in wisconsin Homestead), and one thing for sure there is a lot more to him then just a late spot filler, Tech expects Phillips to come in and get some playing time as a true freshmen with some work adding more bulk to his frame until fall camp. Whichever route he takes (redshirting or playing), look for Phillips to be one of the key parts to tech’s defense.
Very much appreciate the contribution. This is the kind of info that I truly appreciate and I really did try to find something on Phillips, but I don’t have any subscription services and couldn’t find anything about him signing with Texas Tech.
