Recruiting on the South Plains | DE Leon Mackey

This is the guy. The guy that can have one hand tied behind his back and still whip your rear (actually, I'm pretty sure that every signee could do this because I am not very strong). Mackey could be a difference maker on the defensive side of the ball, bookend at a defensive end position and letting someone else fill in until DE Scott Smith returns (fingers crossed). And Mackey is the type of player that you see on other teams and you say to yourself, "Wow. That guy looks like a helluva athlete." Love it and need more.

So much more good strong after the jump.
The Player Speaks: Again, another profile and I can't find a news story or any quotes from Mackey. Sigh.
Video: The first video appears to be some sort of advertisement for some sort of program that Mackey was with prior to Hargrave. I'm not sure what to think about it, but I'm posting it because I don't know much about Mackey.
Scouting Report: Those 30 seconds on the second video goes by way too fast (there's an obvious joke here, but you're all better than that). Since I haven't see much video I'm guessing that the reason that Mackey was so highly sought-after is because he's good. Real good. Scout has this bit on Mackey:
A versatile defensive lineman, Mackey is quick enough to line up at end in Hinds' 4-3 defense in pass rushing situations, and strong enough to line up at tackle during other circumstances. A likely destination will be a strong side end. He's not quite big enough to be a full time defensive tackle, but his size and strength are ideal for an end to hold his ground, and he's quick enough to still be an effective pass rusher - Scott Kennedy
I'd agree with the assessment that Mackey may not be big enough to play tackle, but he's got the right size to play defensive end all day long.
Leon, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!

Thats what im talking bout.
This guy is big and athletic. He will make a huge impact.

Question - Scott Smith is suspended for the 1st 4 games this season?
No, hopefully…

I'm also curious.
There has been a lot of hearsay (from what I’ve read) regarding Scott’s status as being suspended for the first 4 games, but I haven’t seen anything solid that verifies this to be the case. I apologize in advance if someone has already verified all this and I just missed it – no disrespect. Can someone finally clear this up for me with a link to a reliable source.
It would be awesome if we could get something official from the athletic dept - surely that is not a big secret!
The only thing official I recall on Scott Smith is that on NSD, whoever the moderator was for Tech confirmed in a post that Scott Smith would be playing next year, but without any specifics.
I do not even recall where the idea of “full 12 game suspension” came from, which then resulted in this speculation about sitting out the first 4 games this year.
I don't
remember ever hearing that. I remember the suspension being for the remainder of last season. That seems to be fair. I also dont remember ever hearing anything to the effect of Smith’s transgressions being so egregious as to warrant another 4 games this season on top of last seasons games. But then again….just cuz I didnt hear it doesnt mean it didnt happen.

The pass rush could be something worth paying close attention to. Lets not forget Jackson Richards along with Mackey and Smith. If we can figure out who can play LB we might be better than expected.

This guy looks to be made for the pursuing d that we have and looks athletic enough to drop into coverage if/when this scheme is needed.

It is so easy to get stoked about the coming season.
However, as I have been guilty of just this in season’s past, I am fighting it off this year until we know two important things:
1) What will be the leadership be like at QB, and by whom will it be provided?
2) How competent will the new DC be and can he turn the defense around in the coming Spring and Fall sessions?
Until these questions are answered we will not know how good this team can be. The talent is, I feel, unquestioned. The training of that talent on defense, offense and special teams is going to be what determines everything. This could be amazing or it could be just OK, but I am ready for some FOOTBALL!

I have to agree
i am stoked too! but i think QB is the least of our worries. I am more worried about the D again this year. If Chad G can really turn it around then i could get really excited!

I am concerned about the QB situation
Mainly because every offensive play starts there…well, after it is centered. The intelligence of all of the QB hopefuls is unquestioned, but there is one that should stand out and execute just a bit better than everyone else. I hope the coaches hit on that and there will be absolutely no concerns about the QB position. I like DOege and feel he is completely healthy and ready to explode onto the scene as the starter. It won’t be easy as the other candidates are as talented, all with a little bit of something that will set them apart individually. May the best man win….and in turn lead Tech to a lot of wins.
