ODDS AND ENDS

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR SEARCH

I don't think I need to tell anyone that I'm just presenting the information, you do with it what you want.  Ryan Hyatt had RaiderPower.com's Travis Cram on the radio yesterday and did confirm that the Pac-12 associate athletic director Kevin Weiberg is apparently no longer a candidate.  Current Miami AD Kirby Hocutt is still considered a candidate, however, Cram and Hyatt both agree that there are some candidates that are inside Texas Tech and Hyatt thinks there's another surprise outside candidate, but they did not want to discuss names until Monday of next week.

TEXAS TECH'S FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN ATHLETE

For those of you who didn't know, Danny Hardaway was Texas Tech's first African-American athlete.  You can read a blog post where I wrote about Hardaway way back in 2008.  I had someone email me and ask about Hardaway and I didn't have any updates on him, but then I ran across this from the LAJ where Hardaway will be in Lubbock today:

A Black History Month event featuring the first African-American athlete at Texas Tech is set for today on the university campus.

Danny Hardaway will be featured among speakers and storytellers during the event at 8 p.m. today in room 169 of the Human Sciences Building at Broadway and Akron Avenue, according to a university news release.

The free, public event was designed to celebrate Black History month and will feature a presentation on the history of the university, cultural dances, music and a panel of Tech alumni.

The event was organized by the Eta Lambda Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Iota Upsilon Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi.

If anyone has the time, I'd love for someone to go to this event and let me know how it goes.  I know I'm getting my hopes up, but I'd also love to see an article or video tomorrow.

TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL

SPRING PRACTICE MOVED UP

I know that this may not be a popular stance, but head coach Tommy Tuberville is obsessed and loves the weather.  You probably know someone like Tuberville in your life, the guy or gal that almost always seems to know what the 7-day forecast is and the chance of rain within the next couple of days.  Whether or not you need a jacket or can make it with a sweater.  Tuberville loves talking about the weather.  It doesn't matter if it's wind or sun, it's part of the conversation.

Yesterday, the official site posted that spring practice would be moved up to this Friday and I'll let Tuberville take it from here:

"The weather forecast looks really good this weekend, so we are going to go three-straight days and try to get some quality work in early," said Tuberville. "We wanted to get an early start this year so hopefully we don't run into any lingering injury issues that we dealt with last fall. The guys are excited to get back on the field and ride the wave of momentum that we picked up at the end of the year."

Tech's first official spring practice will begin at 3:50 p.m. on Friday followed by a 1:50 p.m. practice on Saturday and a 2:30 p.m. workout on Sunday. All practices are open to the public and will be held in Jones AT&T Stadium. Fans are asked to use the tunnel entrance on the east side of the stadium and sit in the east stands and not on the sidelines.

The 10-day forecast looks fantastic.

You can also find the 2011 Spring Roster (PDF) and please note that DT Bobbie Agoucha is now Bobbie Clarence Hampton.  And offensive coordinator tweets that leading up to spring practices, the team is working hard:

We had another really competitive winter workout yesterday, the guys have made a lot of progress since last year! Ready for spring ball!less than a minute ago via web

WHAT TO WATCH THIS SPRING

SI.com's Stewart Mandel writes about the 10 new coordinators that will have the biggest impact on 2011 and newly hired defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow makes the list:

Chad Glasgow, Texas Tech (defense): Red Raiders coach Tommy Tuberville could not have looked to a better source to help upgrade his defense. Former TCU secondary coach Glasgow, 39, spent 10 seasons on Gary Patterson's staff, helping to produce the nation's top-ranked defense five times. Tuberville -- a defensive-minded coach himself -- figures to incorporate fresh concepts from a guy who's been at the center of one of the nation's most innovative defenses. It remains to be seen whether that means moving full-time to TCU's unique 4-2-5 scheme.

There are some pretty nice names on that list and it's nice to see Glasgow mentioned.

ESPN's David Ubben writes about what to watch for in the Big 12 and looks at every team with this bit about Texas Tech:

Time to find new stars. Most of the big names on Texas Tech's defense are gone. Colby Whitlock, Bront Bird, Brian Duncan will all continue their careers elsewhere. The leaders on the defense will have to begin to emerge in the spring. Is it Scott Smith? Cody Davis? A younger, unexpected player? We'll find out. Sometimes these types of situations aren't as easy to predict as they might seem, like Missouri's strength in 2010 emerging in the secondary.

There's more there, so go check it out if you're so inclined.

Not really. Haliburton was a contributor on defense in '09 but got squeezed out by better athletes and didn't stick at TE

Disappointing number of Frosh linemen washed out, though, that has consequences down the road. Also one correction, Barbee slipped on but he was a senior this season, so my bad, he shouldn’t be listed

I'd give my

“Lost since fall/eligibility remaining: WR E.J. Celestie (transferred to McNeese State), OL Joel Gray (concussions); DT Myles Wade (left team); TE Ryan Haliburton (finished school early); OL Blake Emert (finished school early).”
- You’re right though I accidentally put Durham on there too, just goes to show that 5th time’s the charm for proofreading

Shrinking roster already?

I wanted to make this a fanshot, but have had a very busy week (in a good way). The subject has been on my mind since recruiting season. I am working on another project for DTN already, too.

I want to know how fans of Texas Tech athletics (not just football) can lend a few words of encouragement to student athletes who may be struggling (academically or otherwise).

Is there a way that the average fan might discern who needs some extra support?
Is there a facility within the athletic program to collect and distribute letters or e-mails?

It seems like a positive way to make a difference, and I was wondering if anything like this exists and can be maximized for the benefit of student athletes.

Does any one know?

Alumni reaching out to scholarship athletes raises a huge red flag to the NCAA

In the past that was usually a booser handling cash payments. When I was in school the athletes called these alums their “sugar daddies”, one assigned to each player. There may be a tutoring program that could use donations. I would think football players would have the best academic support system of any students at Tech.

What is "Good-Strong" and why is there always so much more of it after a jump?

by mbrown603 on Feb 17, 2011 12:10 PM CST up reply actions

Not an alumni

But I would hope they do have that academic support.
I wasn’t talking money – but true words of encouragement.
Sometimes it could make a difference.
Guess not though.

I have stated before that I am for player compensation beyond the current system, but that requires keyboard time I just don’t have right now. NOBODY wants to see a return to the bad old days – But I have a few ideas on doing it right someday. That is a separate issue though. I suppose things are this way for those reasons. Understandable, but maybe someday it will change.

For now, neither then.

I think the NFL should establish a minor league system like baseball has

Then the talented football players who have no business going to college have a path to the NFL that doesn’t require the major academic institutions in this country to maintain this fraud that these are all “student-athletes”. I would guess that half of the kids signed to division 1 college football programs wouldn’t last a year on their own academically in a major university.

What is "Good-Strong" and why is there always so much more of it after a jump?

Can it really be that tough to make your grades? I saw the average SAT scores for Tech’s entering freshmen and my seventh grader scored higher on the SATs. I do not see why our atheletes can’t compete in the classroom as well as on the field.

Is this news about Weiberg credible?

I would hope not. He seems like a great choice for a number of reasons. I hope it was not just a matter of salary because this guy would have paid it back in what he brought to the table, esp. if the conference realigns or starts a TV network.

by RRaider5355 on Feb 17, 2011 9:00 AM CST reply actions

It's pretty credible

No one from the admin is going to put out a press release saying they whiffed on the best candidate available, but they’re definitely looking in other directions

I have a sinking feeling

that the “leaders” at Tech are going to botch the new AD hiring. Especially if Meyers is involved in the process of bringing in his replacement.

not gonna lie...

I don’t like the sound of “inside candidates”. Don’t get me wrong, I love my school and want our staff to do the same, but I can’t think of any STRONG AD candidates that we have “in house” right now. And with Beebe running the conference, we NEED a strong AD to be looking out for us.

by HeeroTX on Feb 17, 2011 9:56 AM CST up reply actions

Bingo

I feel the same way. The last thing we need is a loop 289er filling that job. It’s vital that Tech gets an established AD that has connections.

Danny Hardaway

I don’t think Tech had yet admitted its first African-American students before I graduated in 1963. I know that Hardaway didn’t come along until after as I was gone, so I didn’t get to see him play. I remember that the coaches gave him number 44, Donny Anderson’s jersey, which wasn’t retired until years later. I’m not sure whether they were paying the young man a great honor or putting even more pressure on him. As I recall, he handled the pressure well.

Jody Arrington?

is an internal candidate that is suppose to be well connected…..anyone?

Just to pre-diffuse

any of the silliness, It probably wasn’t in reference to Hyatt – Maybe the other guy?

Back in the days when you could look at local sports radio numbers without too much digging around – they plummeted after Tech football season. It’s pretty clear he wants our buisness – he hasn’t been all that subtle. Fair enough. When the going gets tough… the tough sell us barbecue. Smart man- who doesn’t like barbecue?

If the deal were any better there would be animals wandering through our yard – on fire – each time we switched on the radio, hot and ready right there- like a smokey meat parade ready to be invited in for dinner.

I would never leave the house…
(Except to stock up on fire extinguishers)
