Red Raider Gridiron | Hampton Transfers and Receiver Options

Red_raider_gridiron_-_tiltshift__resize_-_2__medium

POST-PRACTICE NON-TRANSCRIPT |  The official site has video of head coach Tommy Tuberville in yesterday's post-practice press conference and here's my non-transcript:

Tommy Tuberville:  A little more contact today.  Didn't do well on offense, didn't do well at all.  Way behind on offense.  Defense expect to be behind, but want to learn the base stuff defensively.  Just kicked it around on offense, made mistakes, never got off the ground.  That's the reason you practice and the reason you get better.  WR Darrin Moore is getting better, small crack on his wrist.  Played well this year, has 2 years remaining.  WR Marcus Kennard has bad turf toe and he'll be out a week.  We need him out there.  Gives other people the opportunity to step up.  Different techniques with DC Chad Glasgow, DE Scott Smith looks good, would like to add about 10 to 15 pounds.  Is a senior and needs to be a leader.  RB Aaron Crawford can be a blocking back.  Need to do a few more things out of the running game, had an operation to help his breathing and with the humidity the operation will help.  Will have to be a a guy that can be a running back and a blocking back.  WR Derek Edwards' head is spinning, needs to gain some weight.  He knows that if he wants to play, he's got to make an impact this spring.  Next 4-5 months will help him gain strength.

Like clockwork, Tuberville mentions something about the weather, but this time it's about how an operation on Crawford will help his breathing, especially with all of the humidity in West Texas.

I have no answers.

DT BOBBIE (AGOUCHA) HAMPTON, TE BO WHITNEY AND RB TIM GRAVES TO TRANSFER | Per LAJ's Don Williams three players will transfer:  DT Bobbie (Agoucha) Hampton, TE Bo Whitney and RB Tim Graves.  The loss of Hampton is the biggest loss, but it's not that big of a loss with the arrival of NG Dennell Wesley.  If they need a guy that can play 10 to 20 plays at nose guard, I'm guessing that Wesley will be able to fill that role.  Hampton was only going to be here for the 2011 season.  However, if there are injuries again this year and if Wesley can't play, then this could be a significant transfer, especially with the transfer of DT Myles Wade to Portland State.

Whitney never played last year, despite being available to play and he was the only designated tight end other than Felicia James.  I don't think that Graves was a scholarship running back so I'm not sure what to think there other than he wanted an opportunity to play and with the current depth at running back, that wasn't likely.

Williams notes also detail how the offense didn't have a good day yesterday (as noted above) and Tuberville and OC Neal Brown are emphasizing turnovers:

There were at least three dropped passes in the 11-on-11 team period, and offensive coordinator Neal Brown stopped the workout after running backs Harrison Jeffers and Ronnie Daniels fumbled in a span of three plays. Brown made his players do up-downs.

"We told them at the beginning of spring, ‘If you drop the ball on the ground, we’re going to really stress it,’" Tuberville said. "Today we turned the ball over a little bit, and the problem with that was we couldn’t get over that point. We’ve got so many young guys out there, they couldn’t get their focus back."

RECEIVER OUTLOOK |  LAJ's Don Williams  writes that the receivers will have to pick up for the loss of of graduating seniors Lyle Leong and Detron Lewis.  Here's Williams with a bit of a depth chart:

This spring, Lewis’ old flanker spot has Moore, senior Jacoby Franks, redshirt freshman Shawn Corker and newcomer Tyson Williams, the latter a transfer from West Texas A&M who must sit out this season. Leong’s old split end position has sophomore Eric Ward, junior-college transfer Marcus Kennard and first-semester freshman Derek Edwards.

And like a lot of you have said this past year, this team lacked big plays and big-bodied receivers:

Tuberville and offensive coordinator Neal Brown both said last season that a big-bodied receiver was a missing component. The Red Raiders need Moore and the 6-4, 202-pound Kennard to provide that element.

Something else the Raiders had too little of last season were big plays. That was an emphasis of their recent recruiting class. They’d like for Edwards, the former Brenham High School star, to provide a dash of that, though it remains to be seen whether he can help next season.

"I’m kind of in this situation where I’ve got to come in, learn all this stuff and play with the big boys now," Edwards said, "so it’s pretty hectic right now, but I think I’m getting the gist of it down pretty well.

"I have older guys to look up to that are kind of showing me the way, showing me (the light at) the end of the tunnel. All of I’ve got to do is just get to it."

MISCELLANEOUS |  I haven't seen this anywhere, TurfBurner's Jay Beck writes about how the Oklahoma Sooners are missing a week of workouts for the following:

According to a letter sent to NCAA director of secondary enforcement Chris Strobel, the university started an investigation after a player refused to sign a weekly practice log and then provided Oklahoma's compliance director with a recording of defensive backs coach Willie Martinez asking why he had missed a voluntary workout.

What?  So a player taped a coach asking him about why the player wasn't at a voluntary practice?  I hadn't seen that anywhere, good find by Jay . . . NewsOK's Berry Tramel writes that the Big 12 is having problems finding enough quality football game . . . Team Speed Kills cocknfire with two parts (Part I and Part II) of a three-part series on paying players, the NCAA and amateurism.  Really fantastic reads . . .

What do NCSU, Arky, Penn St. TTU, La Salle and LMU (and GT?) all have in common? Hit me in 3 weeks. Or less.

Well...

NC State is all but set to let loose its roundball coach. I don’t know about the others (including Tech), but that’s probably what he’s getting at.

Tuberville and the weather

He is cracking me up with his comments. The humidity in Lubbock – really? And coming from the southeast you think he would know humidity.

Hey, maybe he is auditioning for an on air spot doing the weather like Leach… ;-)

There’s a cold mist on right now, but later on today the forecast calls for everything to be on fire because it is so dry.

Maybe he hasn’t got his head around a dry-line setup yet, where it swings back and forth throughout the day/night, and never checks the weather from work during the day when it’s dry. In an area so dominated by it this time of year, you would think he might figure out how it works. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dry_line

I don’t have any answers either. My sense is he is auditioning for Puxatawny Phill’s job.

Holy hell I read the bold title “graves to transfer” and I thought you meant Pearlie… I almost broke my phone

Exactly.

Seth, you owe us for that one, I think.

Yes, Seth, I know it was a slip;

But my heart stopped. I almost turned off my computer. It’s a good thing that after I started breathing again that I read on. 2011 is probably not going to be much better on defense. Too many changes.

Too bad James is gone, he could have recorded Tubby and put it up on you tube. I wonder when the player in question tranfers to Tech.

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.

Glad to see that the offense isn’t impressing at this early stage. Seemed like last spring things were overlooked and the offense came out playing poorly in games. No excuses for fumbles or dropped passes. The A&M game last season had numerous plays that resulted in fumbles or drops. This is Brown’s opportunity to make this offense a success or not.

I like the early pressure that seems apparent – but if you think about it, the superbowl was won by the ball changing hands unexpectedly. Maybe that lesson wasn’t lost on the coaches?
We can only hope…

I would totally like to see us not loose control of the football as often as last year, and gain control of it when it suits us to a greater extent. Now lets see what actually happens on the field.

I don't understand why we are giving DE Scott Smith any press;

Hasn’t he been suspended for the first four games already. I doubt that he will ever see the playing field. Tubby must be allowing him to practice for the NFL so he can add a name to his list. Why are we putting any effort into this beast.

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.

by Btech on Feb 23, 2011 8:36 AM CST reply actions

I have seen a 4-game suspension mentioned several times on our blog, but never seen anyone from the coaching staff say that. Last year he was suspended for the rest of the season. I was impressed that Coach suspended him but kept him on the team and worked with him the entire year. Do not assume that just because a young man made a mistake that he is a lost cause. Give him a chance to redeem himself. I’m glad I was not discarded when I made mistakes in my youth.

by Colonel 71 on Feb 23, 2011 8:46 AM CST up reply actions

I saw a video with tubs speaking to the notion of him being out for four games. I think it was on the university website, and covered here a few days ago. Maybe it was under a Glasgow headline? Not sure. I remember posting something to the effect of “Per tubs: Smith out out for 4” in the article discussion. I’ll be darned if I can find where it went but I want to say it was this week.

by Raider289 on Feb 23, 2011 9:13 AM CST up reply actions

I could not find it either, but I know I saw it more than once.

And if someone said it on DTN, then for sure it is accurate. I did the sarcastic font wrong. Agree about mistakes, I just made another one. What I was trying to say is I am pulling for the kid, but first it was the rest of the season, and now the ffirst four games, looks like he has not learned from his mistakes. Thats all.

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.

by Btech on Feb 23, 2011 9:16 AM CST up reply actions

I think this may be a misunderstanding

Maybe I’m wrong, but perhaps what we all assumed was a suspension for the rest of the 2010 season was actually a suspension for an entire season (or perhaps it was a one year suspension). If that was the case, he wouldn’t have been allowed back until the fifth game of the 2011 season…which fits with how things seem to be shaping up.

Leach...he may not be my Coach, but he'll always be my Captain!

Per Don Williams article on Feb 20

asked Tuberville about Smith and being suspended for the first month of the season, Tuberville replied… We’ll see when we get there, Tuberville said. Could be. Maybe, maybe not. It just depends on how he handles himself.

by MatadorProud on Feb 23, 2011 9:21 AM CST up reply actions

I think

Its just a smoke screen. Tubbs gave every indication last season that EVERYONE was on the same page: Coach, staff, player, and parents. I imagine Scott HAS handled himself well (with mom & dad looking over his should undoubtedly) and his suspension will be lifted in time for the season opener. <<<>>>

Have you ever thought...

that maybe he worked through whatever issues he was having and he’s working hard to stay on the team. I personally am glad he is still part of this team and worth the effort.

by MatadorProud on Feb 23, 2011 9:15 AM CST up reply actions

Not quality TV?????

Reference the NewsOK article: Since when is TTU football not quality TV. Our TV ratings have been excellent. NewsOK’s Berry Tramel needs to catch a few Tech games. And in spite of the fact that we had a slightly off season last year (new coaching staff transition) it is rediculous to say that TTU is not one of the top football programs in the Big 12. We are the ONLY team in the Big 12 that has had a winning season every year of the league’s existence. Ugggg!

by Colonel 71 on Feb 23, 2011 8:39 AM CST reply actions

I think

that given that sports is an “anything can happen” type of arena of endeavor in which you never know which team will provide which compelling story line. Trying to predict WHICH games will make good tv (aside from the obvious ones) is an exercise in futility.

Initial reactions

Im putting together a very preliminary WR depth chart….

it seems we have a GLUT of split ends and flankers and are kinda thin at H & Y (Swindall, Zou, and Corndog by my count). Any chance a guy like Torres, with his superior route running gets moved to inside receiver?

Arriba sus Pistolas, Muchachos!

by Tortilla Pirate on Feb 23, 2011 11:52 AM CST reply actions

Pretty sure we started last year with Torres on the inside

or at least as much as we could in the first half given his injury issues. He never really seemed to get untracked until he got moved outside where his size advantage could tell on corners. He’s a damn good Air Raid receiver anywhere you put him, though, in my book. He’ll contribute wherever he plays next year if he can stay healthy, there isn’t a doubt in my mind.

Did anyone get the season ticket renewal email?

I just clicked online and I’m pretty sure they raised prices by $50 a seat on me! And I have heard nothing about this nor does it say anything about it in the email. I realize that you don’t really advertise increases, but you should at least say something if it is going up that much.

we supposedly offerred the guy from Miami…..I don’t like this move from what I know. At all. I better start thinking about the 4-2-5
