ODDS AND ENDS

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR SEARCH

There are a couple of things early this morning.  Late yesterday, it was made public that current Miami athletic director Kirby Hocutt was officially offered the Texas Tech athletic director position (LAJ's Matthew McGowan | DMN's Mike Jones | Miami Herald's Susan Miller Degnan).  Here's a bit from the LAJ, which also references the Miami Herald:

"As far as I know, Texas Tech is pursuing him, but I know no other details — whether he has been offered or anything like that," said LaTonya Sadler, associate communications director in the Miami athletic department.

The Miami Herald quoted a UM official saying it was clear Tech wanted Hocutt, but the situation was unresolved Thursday morning.

"I’m hoping we’re not going to lose him," a UM trustee told the Herald. "We’re going to do everything in our power to keep him. That’s all I can say."

What role finances might have in Hocutt’s decision are difficult to gauge.

Myers, who retires in May, is making $379,600 annually, according to a response to an open-records request the Avalanche-Journal obtained this month. Miami, as a private institution, does not release salaries.

That's a helluva salary.  And late last night, Sports By Brooks tweeted the following two tweets (in chronological order):

Hocutt called Friday staff meeting.. LBK Walmart better stock up on Go Phones asap. So how many minutes will #tubs get?

Snip

The 'meeting' I referenced earlier was Kirby Hocutt calling a meeting tomorrow AM w/ Univ of Miami staffers.

It seems unlikely that an offer was made without there being some sort of acceptance in the near future.  SB Nations' Miami Hurricanes blog, The 7th Floor, has some more detail, mainly an Associated Press writer dropping hints about Hocutt looking at Texas Tech.  Your favorite radio host, Ryan Hyatt, talked with Don Williams on the Williams and Hyatt Show yesterday and discuss the possible athletic director hire as well a little bit of football.

SINGLETARY AND ROBERSON APOLOGIZE

Yesterday, SF Mike Singletary and PG John Roberson apologized for their remarks about the lack of crowd after the Colorado loss.  Per DMN's Mike Graham, here's the official statement:

"We would like to take this opportunity to apologize for the comments we made following last night's game against Colorado. It was a tough, emotional and hard-fought game that did not go our way in the end. Our post-game comments were made purely out of frustration. We have great fans here at Texas Tech and we appreciate the support they have provided us. There is one final home game left on the schedule against Oklahoma and we hope that the fans will come out and support this team and our senior class."

This was the right thing to do, although I wish they would have read the statement, but I think that's me just being petty, so I'm fine with this.  If head coach Pat Knight isn't going to be back, this really puts everyone in a tough situation, including the players and I'm guessing that Singletary and Roberson's comments after the Colorado game were probably more of a release for how the season has turned out rather than this particular game.

RED RAIDERS BEAT BYU, 7-4

The Red Raiders are now 5-0 and took down the hated Cougars of BYU.  Game two of the Brooks Wallace Memorial Classic is this evening.  Starting pitcher Ben Flora (4.0 IP; 4 H; 2 ER; 1 BB; 4 SO) didn't make it to the 5th inning, but he threw 61 pitches, which may have been his limit this early in the season.  The bullpen was pretty good, except for a tough outing by Jerad McCrummen (1.1 IP; 3 H; 2 ER; 0 BB; 0 SO), but the rest of the bullpen didn't allow a run, didn't walk a batter and struck out 6.  I'll take that.  Zach Fowler (1.0 IP; 2 H; 0 ER; 0 BB; 2 SO) got the win and John Neely (1.2 IP; 2 H; 0 ER; 0 BB; 2 SO) got his second save of the season.

3B Reid Redman led the offense (2-3; 3 RBI), but it was 2B Nick Popescu (2-5; 1 R; 1 RBI) who had the game-winning hit in the 7th inning, putting Texas Tech up for good. LF Jamodrick McGruder and C Kevin Whitehead both had an RBI, while everyone in the lineup registered a hit, except for DH Mason Randolph, but Randolph did score a run.

Date Start Time Texas Tech Opponent Result

KLBK has the video highlights as does the official siteLAJ's George Watson and DT's Jose Rodriguez file their game stories from yesterday and head coach Dan Spencer was pleased with the pitching:

"If you go out and give up four runs when the wind’s blowing out 30 (mph), you’ll take that every time," Tech head coach Dan Spencer said. "I’m not concerned with the hits as much as when you add them all up at the end of the day. I told the guys before the game that one-run innings aren’t going to beat us. So four ones, I’ll take that, and that’s (against) a good offensive team."

And Spencer talks about Redman:

"He plays because he can really defend, and then when you add in the fact that he is really swinging the bat well and he is doing a very good job with runners on base, it makes it an easy one to write in. In the five games we have played Reid is our offensive MVP because he does a lot of things. We have some other guys playing well, but he gives you an older guy, a stabilizing presence, late in the batting order. He has done a great job of creating runners for the top of our lineup."

Out of College I wanted to be an AD;

But after making $12,500, I learned I could not feed a family of four. My how things have changed. Of course that was before TV money.

I wil take the job for $250,000K, and I promise you Nancy will be my first casualty, and I will hire G Man for basketball.

Why was it done this way?

Look –
more or less this looks like Tubs basically hired the guy.

Now, I understand how important it is to have someone there the football coach can work with-

but if Meyers can’t even find his own replacement, and is sitting around doing NOTHING on the public dime his sorry ass should have been run off a long time ago.

Secondly, since Tubs is essentially the “acting AD” while Meyers is sitting in his office and rotting, why is Tubs not entitled to the AD pay? This should have been organized and settled months ago.

For all we heard about the administration doing it the “right” way they couldn’t even cough up the theater of the Chinese fire-drill in a last minute search as they had intended, and proclaimed – let alone come up with someone in a timely manner.

Tubs had to go out and do it himself, from how it looks from here.

SOMEONE should have been hired a LONG time ago – WAY back shortly after Meyers announced his retirement. It’s not like he was gonna be there for ever, and it wasn’t such a big damn surprise.

How about an open records request on Meyers pension?

Lubbock firefighters pensions are are said to be millions in the hole. The money just isn’t there and it will soon be a huge problem.

How much do you want to bet Meyers gets every penny of his pension at about the same time the firemen have to face a shortage?

by Raider289 on Feb 25, 2011 8:12 AM CST reply actions

I am sure Meyers Pension is like our congressmen and senators;

They get their salary when they retire, with cost of living increases until they die, and then their wives continue to get $275,000 plus per year. That is why Meyers sits on his butt and doesn’t do anything. Has nothing to do with building a successful athleic program.

And remember back at the end of the year when Tubby was talking to the Miami AD, and we thought he was relocating to Miami. Looks like Tubby was hiring his new AD to me.

I miss the Pirate more than ever.

Pretty sure the part of Myers pension

That was paid by “Tech” and not the athletic sept. falls under Teachers Retirement System (TRS). So the ath dept. would only be on the hook for any additional pension he negotiated with them years ago. I would assume, he having worked for Tech around 40 years, his TRS would be about 60% of his top 3 years (remembering only a percentage of what his “State” pay was. If he was making$350,000+, my guess is half of that was privately funded by the ath dept. My dad was a Superintendant and worked 40 years so he got 75% of his top three years salary, but I think they capped it later at like 50-60%. My mom taught 40 years and only gets 50%.

This is part of my point.

We know now that the athletic department it not entirely self-funding, because of the Tubs pay thing. I wasn’t making the point that it was 100% tax money or anything, but surely a portion of it is, and no matter how small- that is where the outrage has a home.

Well I for one believe whatever money spent

On G. Myers was well spent (except he stayed a bit too long) He has been with us a long time and has done well by me. It’s obvious he’s too old now to stay on top of things, but I’ll try like hell to buy him a beer at the Alumni Pavillion the 1st Saturday in September.

I have only been following Tech sports for the last few years – and through that lens, I would never have expected someone to have that point of view. I am not doubting your motives, but illustrating the difference in points of view here.

Does that not make a stronger case that his decline was all the more dramatic and he should have already cleared out?

I don’t know your back-story here, and the great things he might have done but the idea that people still have goodwill about him from the past (regardless of current results) may be part of the explanation I am looking for.

Am I pointed in the right direction here now?

I respect your opinion

You got the gist of it. He is a Tech lifer and sans the past few years, we’ve had some wonderful things happen during his tenure, alot of the prosperity coincided with Chancellor Montfort, but none the less, I value GM’s contribution.

Seth you can delete this if you want,

but I just haven’t seen anything so crazy in so long and figure I would put this up. Also, on a football note, was the PAC 10 guy just not interested? He would have been nice to have in conference realignment.

What’s my take-a-way from the Charlie post?

Addicts like Sheen are often angry people and their resentments spur on their compulsive behavior. And not only that, but it’s insane to keep repeating the same actions, expecting different results, and getting the same catastrophes. Addicts, not un-like the Bell Tower Boys do this every day of their lives without seeming to be able to stop. Let’s just hope we about to get some SANE GENETICS in the Tower!

Another thought

I put this (among other things) in my fanpost, but the question might have a good home here too:

What are the odds that Tubs showed some actual leadership and went behind the admins back to get the deal going while they were foundering? I could see him doing that.

by Raider289 on Feb 25, 2011 9:38 AM CST reply actions

I was thinking this as well.

While I suppose if I was predisposed to bash on Tubs, his meddling might fit in well with an “everything Tubs is bad” outlook. Right now, I’m not of that mindset, so I can accept the idea that there is at least a chance that he may have been being proactive a few months back. The guy has been around the coaching block and probably has some idea of how (he thinks) athletic departments should be run. Hard to say, but the thought did cross my mind.

So what explains the Tubs fingerprints?

Don Williams article in the local paper has this quote:

"I think he came to the realization that he wanted to be back in Texas," said Tech Chancellor Kent Hance, who interviewed Hocutt one-on-one for 21/2 hours Wednesday in Dallas.

by Raider289 on Feb 25, 2011 4:14 PM CST up reply actions

First of all, I never believe anything Hance says

Ryan Hyatt tweeted something to the effect of Tubs conversations with Miami/Hocutt back in December were probably Tubs having initial talks with him about coming to Lubbock, instead of what everyone suspected were coaching interviews.

If that’s what Tubs did on his own, going around Hance and company to get the ball rolling, then I’m all for that. That’s where I was coming from.

That is countrier than a biscuit. - Garth Brooks

I think that is a bit of a stretch.

Tubs was shopping his worth in Miami and it worked out well for him. He got a 33% raise and a contract extension.

by FriscoRaider on Feb 25, 2011 10:55 AM CST up reply actions

That could be a stretch, I admit

but the truth might also be somewhere between that.
Maybe Tubs was simply told “go find us a guy”
Maybe he booked the trip and shook some hands on his own.
Could be any number of any different things (or non things.)

I don’t pretend to know- but it is interesting to ponder the scenarios and gather up some reactions. Especially not sure how the nautical types would react since it’s not a move the old guy would have made or would have been able to pull off- if that was the case.

I wonder if it is just me being imaginative, though. Probably.

I don't think the "Go find us a guy"

Idea is too far fetched. Because if Tubbs went to Miami to get an AD, this all makes sense. If Tubs wanted the Miami job, we just hired the AD who wouldn’t give his new coach an interview at his old job, new relationship doomed.

If true, Wouldn't you think Tuberville bringing in his own handpicked AD would cement his stay at Tech?

Say if Tennessee or LSU have an opening the next year or two? He may prefer to be his own man at Tech than exist in the SEC on a hot seat turned up to 11.

SEC is dont with Tubs already chewed him up and spit him out. The next schools will be Georgia or maybe FLA, I dont hear good things about what Muschamp is doing down there.

Now maybe if Tubbs wins a couple of XII championships the SEC might have him back. Clearly the coaching rotation goes SEC coordinator, TX coordinator, then back to the SEC or if you Les Miles XII HC to SEC HC to gravy train

I like facts and sources as much as the next guy, but if all the recent info is wrong, we we can have all kinds of fun and games with it at the expense of the media. They seem to have thrown off the muzzle about it as it it were a done deal.
