Five Questions | New Athletic Director and First Scrimmage Thoughts

Five_questions_-_tiltshift__resize__medium

1.  WHAT IS NEW AD KIRBY HOCUTT'S FIRST JOB AND MOST IMPORTANT JOB AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR? | If you've been under a rock then I should let you know that Texas Tech has hired Miami athletic director Kirby Hocutt to replace out-going athletic director Gerald Myers.  This is actually a two-part question and want to know what do you think is the first thing that Hocutt should do and what is the most important thing that he should do as athletic director?

2.  WHAT ARE YOUR EARLY IMPRESSIONS OF THE QUARTERBACK RACE? | Saturday was Texas Tech's first scrimmage and there are actually statistics available (PDF) (and highlights, lots of highlights).  Let's focus on the quarterbacks first.  It appears that Doege is still getting a majority of the repetitions and here's how the quarterbacks fared on Saturday:

Seth Doege | 17-26 | 246 Yds | 9.4 YPA | 3 TD | 1 Int
Jacob Karam | 8-17 | 116 Yds | 6.8 YPA | 2 TD | 0 Int
Scotty Young | 9-11 | 63 Yds | 5.7 YPA | 0 TD | 1 Int
Michael Brewer | 2-7 | 15 Yds | 2.1 YPA | 1 TD | 0 Int

I find it interesting that the yards per attempt (YPA) is consistent with experience playing college football.  In other words, Doege, the most experienced, has the highest YPA, while Brewer, who should be attending prom in high school, has the lowest YPA.  Do you think that the comfort level of a quarterback is directly related to the experience that the quarterback has and is it looking more and more like that Doege is going to be the starter in the fall?

3.  ARE YOU SURPRISED ABOUT THE NOT SO KNOWN NAMES SHOWING UP IN THE SECONDARY AND ARE THERE ANY OTHER SURPRISES FROM LOOKING AT THE DEFENSIVE STATISTICS? | There are some things to watch defensively too, including taking a look at the secondary.  CB Junior Osunde leading the team with 2 pass-break-ups and 4 tackles, S Brett Dewhurst had 10 tackles and 1 sack, and S Giorgio Durham had 8 tackles and pass-break-up.  So here we go, we have a walk-on cornerback leading the team with 2 pass-break-ups, while the only other cornerbacks that were on the field were fellow walk-on Sawyer Vest, redshirt freshman Don Hursey and 2011 commit Jeremy Reynolds being the only cornerbacks that played on Saturday.  Hursey and Reynolds are fantastic cover cornerbacks.  Durham transferred from Central Oklahoma where he was named as an All-American and his conference defensive player of the year.  Would it surprise you if Texas Tech has a starting cornerback that didn't play a lick last year and who are your early favorites? What about the fact that Dewhurst had a sack yesterday?  Is anyone else giddy about the fact that this may mean that we'll see the safety blitz a bit more this year?  Any other surprises from looking at the defensive statistics?

4.  DO YOU THINK THAT THE 2011 RECEIVING CORPS WILL BE RECEIVER BY COMMITTEE? | There were 6 touchdown catches, including WR Tramain Swindall (2 catches 46 yards), WR Eric Ward (3 catches 50 yards), WR Derek Edwards (4 catches 46 yards), WR Darrin Moore (3 catches 30 yards), IR Cornelius Douglas (5 catches 71 yards) and TE Tony Trahan (1 catch 7 yards).  If these numbers are any indication, the overall receiving numbers are fairly balanced in that there wasn't one standout receiver on Saturday as the most receptions was RB Harrison Jeffers with 6 and the aforementioned Douglas with 71 yards.  In the video below, you see Trahan make the touchdown catch, and I'm curious if we'll see more tight end looks in and around the goal line.  Overall, do you think there is going to be one standout receiver, if yes, then who is it going to be, or will this be receiver by committee, especially considering the overall depth at the position

5.  WHAT SURPRISES YOU MOST FROM THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEKEND'S HIGHLIGHTS? | Much thanks to DT's Andrew Nepsund who has some video from Saturday's scrimmage.  Tell me what's the first thing that jumps out at you:

For me, it was defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow absolutely getting in the face of LB Tyrone Sonier.  We'll get into this more later, but it's incredibly important that the linebackers know what they're supposed to do in the 4-2-5, especially in coverage as from what I've read, the front 6 will have their very own defensive call while the back 5 will have their own defensive call, completely independent of each other.  So what surprises you about any of this weekend's highlights (official site highlights)?

As always, the questions are after the jump.  Feel free to copy and paste the questions into your comment for super easy commenting.

Glasgow

Wow indeed.
He really gets in the face of these guys.
I think this type of coaching will either make them play harder or make them quit.

You've got to strike that balance when you're in a leadership position

because as much as you’d like to be the good guy and treat everyone like an adult who knows what the eff they’re doing 100% of the time, being held accountable in a very in your face way can also be extremely motivating for people. On the flip side if all you ever do is yell, it won’t be long before people tune you out. Time will tell but judging by Glasgow’s success up to this point he knows when to flip that switch.

South Beaches first job is a no brainer;

First order of business is to get rid of Nancy and any and all realated icons. Need to burn that jersey, not retire it. Second order of business is to hire Billy G as our new basketball coach. Then, I want a new scoreboard, and don’t take down the Double T.

Seth, that is a good catch about YPC. It’s a scrimmage. But I like that in a 125 play scrimmage that the QB’s combined through for over 500 yards. Doege was picked a long time ago. No accident he was the captain in waiting. I am a giant Brewer fan, and I don’t think Tubby through out those positive vibes about MB by accident. We may be looking at our first four year starter after Doege graduates.

I think we are not going to anymore on the defense until we start busting pads in the fall. Too many recruits to fill the voids. But, I do like Russian Coffee’s passion on the defensive side. I am sure that the Wizard of Oz gave him a brain. So I already feel better about the D.

We need more speed, but I am okay with Receiver by committee. I have always felt that this worked better in our offesne. I think we are okay here. I think its more the scheme. Just make sure that we fire up the tennis ball catcher over the summer. Also feel that Doege will find a go to guy anyway.

No question, Russian Coffee was the highlight.

Can’t wait for the fall.

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.

cleaned up on my oscar ballot last night so I'm feeling froggy

1> The first thing Kirby should do is get someone to do a sweet paint-job on his parking spot http://www.thewizofodds.com/.a/6a00e553e551d188340120a59a9a0c970c-500wi but the most important thing he’s got to do is to build for the future in programs that might have been getting short-shrift lately (ahem) but at the same time make sure he’s not mortgaging off anything that’s been achieved already in exchange. So obviously that’s going to include making a splash hire for men’s basketball, but also holding Tuberville and co. accountable to the previous administration’s high standards of player graduation, discipline, and overall accountability.

2> Doege seems to be separating himself and that’s good. Everything is as it should be here except that Karam fumbled the ball twice according to the scrimmage stat sheet, he needs to be careful about turning into the one step forward/two steps back option on the depth chart, because there’s enough upside between Brewer and Young alone to bury him.

3> Not really. With our anchors at LB and DT gone I’d be concerned as hell if the new kids weren’t doing their best to step up and show something in practice. Honestly our defense was so terrible last year that I wouldn’t be surprised if Glasgow went ahead and reenacted the Alec Baldwin scene from Glengarry Glen Ross in the meeting room and basically let everyone know that this D doesn’t have any starters yet. Coffee is for closers.

4> Yeah I don’t know. I don’t think we’re going to see a breakout year from anyone who played a lot last year with the possible exceptions of Corndog and Darrin Moore. I think Sean Corker, if he can get on the field, has the possibility to turn into a Lyle Leong-style money man in the red zone, but I haven’t seen any tape on the new guys that everyone’s so excited about and basically if your name’s not Crabtree I’m not 100% sold on your ability to just walk on to the field here and be the guy.

5> Whoever puts these films together still hasn’t quite decided on how to spell Neal Brown’s name.

Blake Dees?

1. WHAT IS NEW AD KIRBY HOCUTT’S FIRST JOB AND MOST IMPORTANT JOB AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR?
Fund raising. Our teams are doing well (except men’s basketball) but for TTU to take that final step to champoinships we must have facilities that are as good or better than the competition. Superior facilities make recruiting much easier. I am thinking particularily about the baseball facilities.

2. WHAT ARE YOUR EARLY IMPRESSIONS OF THE QUARTERBACK RACE? What a wealth of talent!

3. ARE YOU SURPRISED ABOUT THE NOT SO KNOWN NAMES SHOWING UP IN THE SECONDARY AND ARE THERE ANY OTHER SURPRISES FROM LOOKING AT THE DEFENSIVE STATISTICS? Seth, I didn’t see any mention of Blake Dees in your write-up. Pat Byrne @ Scout.com was very impressed with Dees. Did you notice him from your vantage point in the stands. It is incredible that Dees played so well as an early-enrollment freshment that has only played with the team for a half dozen practices. Especially considering that he is playing middle linebacker for the first time and must make a lot of mental decisions that typically require lots of D1 game experience (and he has none!).

4. DO YOU THINK THAT THE 2011 RECEIVING CORPS WILL BE RECEIVER BY COMMITTEE? I hope it will be receiver-by-committee. It is very hard for a defense to keep tight coverage on everybody.

5. WHAT SURPRISES YOU MOST FROM THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEKEND’S HIGHLIGHTS? My work computer won’t let me view video. :-(

I didn’t want to mention everything, wanted to open up the floor, like what you did regarding Dees, as to what stood out to everyone else from the defensive statistics and offensive statistics. The running backs also had a good day.

Also, I wasn’t there at the scrimmage. I’m all the way in the DFW area.

2. WHAT ARE YOUR EARLY IMPRESSIONS OF THE QUARTERBACK RACE? Doege has a leg up.

3. ARE YOU SURPRISED ABOUT THE NOT SO KNOWN NAMES SHOWING UP IN THE SECONDARY AND ARE THERE ANY OTHER SURPRISES FROM LOOKING AT THE DEFENSIVE STATISTICS? I believe Coach Glasgow is pushing everybody hard and seperating the men from the boys. This bodes well for the team.

4. DO YOU THINK THAT THE 2011 RECEIVING CORPS WILL BE RECEIVER BY COMMITTEE? Corn Dog is making a name for himself. And yes, I believe they will be receiver by commitee.

5. WHAT SURPRISES YOU MOST FROM THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEKEND’S HIGHLIGHTS? Defense stepping up in a big way. I didn’t see that coming in this short of a time span.

Beer at the Jones is a bad idea;

If we can’t get water to the stadium, can you imagine how hard that would be to stock enough beer. I say, BYOB, and stop making me lift up my hat everytime I enter the Jones.

However; free parking for ALL DTN’s is a must.

1. WHAT IS NEW AD KIRBY HOCUTT’S FIRST JOB AND MOST IMPORTANT JOB AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR?

The obvious is find a basketball coach. I think he should also make some effort reunite the Tech fanbase by talking about the future of Tech athletics and what he envisions. I like this guy already and think he’ll bring a young vibe to what is now a somewhat complacent AD office.

2. WHAT ARE YOUR EARLY IMPRESSIONS OF THE QUARTERBACK RACE?

Doege seems to be the next QB and I’m fine with that if he’s demonstrating the most experience and talent. I was hoping that it was hoping to be Young or Brewer because I wanted to see a 3-4 year starter but that’s not likely. The good thing is we have depth for now or at least until one of these guys transfers.

3. ARE YOU SURPRISED ABOUT THE NOT SO KNOWN NAMES SHOWING UP IN THE SECONDARY AND ARE THERE ANY OTHER SURPRISES FROM LOOKING AT THE DEFENSIVE STATISTICS?

Not at all surprised. Glasgow probably watched the film and saw our secondary had no talent what so ever. The younger guys will have plenty of opportunity and rightly so. I’m very happy LB’s and secondary guys are getting more competition. I expect we’ll see a lot of new players on defense next season. Our pass coverage was horrible last season and I think that and not being able to tackle will finally get addressed. This new DC will make an immediate impact and is an upgrade to our coaching staff.

4. DO YOU THINK THAT THE 2011 RECEIVING CORPS WILL BE RECEIVER BY COMMITTEE?

Yes. Plenty of talent to spread out among several players. Torres will be a constant because of his consistency. I expect lots of new faces making big plays. My bigger concern is the play calling and OC Brown’s ability to run this offense. I’m hopeful he has learned from last season.

5. WHAT SURPRISES YOU MOST FROM THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEKEND’S HIGHLIGHTS?

Much better coaching. The defense has a swagger that they haven’t had for a long time. I think some players got lazy last season and I doubt that happens with the new coach eyeing practice for the weak links. So far so good and I’m hoping injuries are minimized and players play up to the maximum potential.

My amateur take

1. WHAT IS NEW AD KIRBY HOCUTT’S FIRST JOB AND MOST IMPORTANT JOB AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR? Replace PK. I found out this will be harder than we think as large endowment attached to BK goes with PK.

2. WHAT ARE YOUR EARLY IMPRESSIONS OF THE QUARTERBACK RACE? Not a race. Like the stats for Doege, 65% completion rate and 14+ yards per catch. Only holding calls can kill those drives.
3. ARE YOU SURPRISED ABOUT THE NOT SO KNOWN NAMES SHOWING UP IN THE SECONDARY AND ARE THERE ANY OTHER SURPRISES FROM LOOKING AT THE DEFENSIVE STATISTICS? Don’t know. I just want turnovers and hope to see more next year.

4. DO YOU THINK THAT THE 2011 RECEIVING CORPS WILL BE RECEIVER BY COMMITTEE? I think we have to hope one receiver steps up to require double teams. He may not be good enough to catch a lot in double teams but by getting double teamed regularly helps the others get open. I have higher hopes for Swindall than others. He has some heighth and experience. If not him the Ward with the speed. I think one of them needs to do it. Otherwise Kennard will have to do it right away.

5. WHAT SURPRISES YOU MOST FROM THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEKEND’S HIGHLIGHTS? Injuries. Why so many?

Re. endowments, once the gift has been made, I don’t think it can be taken back. Someone may want to chime in that knows what they’re talking about (i.e. not me), but I figured that once a gift has been made and the giver (i.e. Knight) makes the gift to the athletic department (I think a 501©(3) charitable organization) then the money becomes that of the charity. Anyone else have any ideas?

I'm not an expert on this but basically whether or not the endowment can be revoked

hinges on the nature of the endowment, both its source and whether or not the donor has set any conditions or restrictions on its use. If Knight had made an unconditional donation then no, he couldn’t renege on his gift after the fact, but if he had specifically added a clause like, idk, “This endowment is only Texas Tech’s while the fruit of my loom coaches hoops at the university” before making the gift then I think there is the opportunity for an endowment to be pulled. I am however not an expert and have no specific knowledge of this situation.

by mojavereject on Feb 28, 2011 8:58 AM CST up reply actions

I’m not a tax guy, but I know enough to get into trouble, but it would seem that a contingent gift would play havoc on the charitable deduction that you might take for the gift if the gift was not irrevocable.

Makes perfect sense;

If the market is up, then OK State football has a good recruiting clas, but whe market is down, funding for recruits is down. Just a theory.

by Btech on Feb 28, 2011 9:12 AM CST up reply actions

it certainly would seem that way

but since my wife’s a lawyer I’ve learned that knowing nothing about the law is sometimes preferable to knowing some-but-not-enough so I’m not going to pull my hair out over the topic. In my eyes, any fair human being would say that Pat’s been given a fair crack at the job and come up short, and no amount of money that Bob Knight can donate to the university is worth losing a decade of Texas Tech football to nepotism

by mojavereject on Feb 28, 2011 9:12 AM CST up reply actions

Am I hearing right? Bobby Knight donated the money to Tech that they use to pay his son's salary?

So Bobby is using Tech to artificially pad his son’s resume with D1 coaching experience? What a deal. I guess Oklahoma State should count themselves lucky that T Bone Pickens doesn’t have a neer-do-well son looking to get a head start in head coaching.

No. I think he set up endowed scholarships for players, which is why I was asking if he could yank that endowment back (I’m guessing no, but I really don’t have a clue).

It all depends on the terms of the endowment.

But if there is nothing in there that says upon his son’s termination the money goes away, then I think Tech keeps the money.

by logan5555 on Feb 28, 2011 11:53 AM CST up reply actions

I will have to admit

I heard this through the worst way. Someone who was once on the Golf team and is close to some ex Basketball players. So it may be a bad story all though the endowments may be “commitments” not yet paid that BK raised from his many Indiana friends. Again I am not sure and maybe should not have made the comment. I hope that if any of this is true in some form or fashion that the new AD can make up for the lost funds.

1. WHAT IS NEW AD KIRBY HOCUTT’S FIRST JOB AND MOST IMPORTANT JOB AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR? Fundraising, Expansion.

2. WHAT ARE YOUR EARLY IMPRESSIONS OF THE QUARTERBACK RACE?
Will be in good hands with Doege.

3. ARE YOU SURPRISED ABOUT THE NOT SO KNOWN NAMES SHOWING UP IN THE SECONDARY AND ARE THERE ANY OTHER SURPRISES FROM LOOKING AT THE DEFENSIVE STATISTICS?
Not suprised at all. These freshman, walk-ons and JC transfers have a lot to prove and are competing for spots and scholarships. They generally work harder. Especially knowing that all spots are up for grabs on defense.

4. DO YOU THINK THAT THE 2011 RECEIVING CORPS WILL BE RECEIVER BY COMMITTEE? I think you’ll see the same production from last years starters.
I have a feeling that we will see alot of tweeks to the offense and alot more passes to running backs. Which it think is a good idea.

5. WHAT SURPRISES YOU MOST FROM THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEKEND’S HIGHLIGHTS? Intensity on defense.

Keep your eyes on QBs, Dees and Daniels

1. WHAT IS NEW AD KIRBY HOCUTT’S FIRST JOB AND MOST IMPORTANT JOB AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR? Study what we have, what traditions are sacred, what our reasonable potentials are, then make a 1, 3, 5 and 10-yr plan to increase fundraising, improve facilities, improve our PR regionally and nationally, and make us a desirable member of any of the top conferences.

2. WHAT ARE YOUR EARLY IMPRESSIONS OF THE QUARTERBACK RACE?
Doege has promise if he stays healthy. But how mobile is he? It leaves the door open for several to see playing time this year. I hope none transfers away.

3. ARE YOU SURPRISED ABOUT THE NOT SO KNOWN NAMES SHOWING UP IN THE SECONDARY AND ARE THERE ANY OTHER SURPRISES FROM LOOKING AT THE DEFENSIVE STATISTICS?
Not surprised since we lost Will Ford. I think the new class will make a dent, I expect a few to play as true frosh. I like Durham. Don’t be surprised if a few “athletes” end up in the rotation next fall. Will be hard for the walk-ons to compete with the speed the new guys will bring.

4. DO YOU THINK THAT THE 2011 RECEIVING CORPS WILL BE RECEIVER BY COMMITTEE? Yes, but we need a true deep threat and tall “jump-ball” endzone receiver like Leong.

5. WHAT SURPRISES YOU MOST FROM THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEKEND’S HIGHLIGHTS? The Scott. He needs to be intense but not try too hard. he will burn out or burn up the players. He will probably settle but better to set a high bar and forgive a bit later. We can’t afford to run guys off but we can’t have what we had last year and win alot of games. I think Scotty will be a good one, just like Muschamp, Bud Foster, etc. They yell but their players know there is love too.

1. WHAT IS NEW AD KIRBY HOCUTT’S FIRST JOB AND MOST IMPORTANT JOB AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR? Find a MBB coach. It seems to me that hiring the right coaches is the key to his position. If he does that, fundraising, facilities, PR, national exposure fall into place.

2. WHAT ARE YOUR EARLY IMPRESSIONS OF THE QUARTERBACK RACE? Based on the stats only, seems like all of them are about where they should be in terms of the development process.

3. ARE YOU SURPRISED ABOUT THE NOT SO KNOWN NAMES SHOWING UP IN THE SECONDARY AND ARE THERE ANY OTHER SURPRISES FROM LOOKING AT THE DEFENSIVE STATISTICS? With the injuries and transfer … no.

4. DO YOU THINK THAT THE 2011 RECEIVING CORPS WILL BE RECEIVER BY COMMITTEE? Yes and that’s a good thing if Brown believes in Leach’s philosophy in getting the ball into as many play makers hands as possible.

5. WHAT SURPRISES YOU MOST FROM THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEKEND’S HIGHLIGHTS? haven’t seen enough of them to weigh in.

I hope that Brown has learned his lessons from last year and will grow into his position. To me, he is the key to the whole deal. Tech has had the most success when the offense kept the opposing defenses on their heals because of execution and distribution.

Five Answers

1. WHAT IS NEW AD KIRBY HOCUTT’S FIRST JOB AND MOST IMPORTANT JOB AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR?
I hate to take away focus from the football program, but seriously. Get rid of little kuniggit.

2. WHAT ARE YOUR EARLY IMPRESSIONS OF THE QUARTERBACK RACE?
I like how Doege is carrying himself. To listen to him, he sounds like Potts did after a lot of growing up under pressure, only better and more mature. I love SYoung and his dimensions and arm strength. But if Brewer is sounds very mature but is obviously very much behing the others. Im wondering if a redshirt may not put him in a position to overtake everyone and take over for good as a Sophomore. This may put him head to head with scotty young, but so be it. For now, the job is Doege’s to lose.

3. ARE YOU SURPRISED ABOUT THE NOT SO KNOWN NAMES SHOWING UP IN THE SECONDARY AND ARE THERE ANY OTHER SURPRISES FROM LOOKING AT THE DEFENSIVE STATISTICS?
YES, very. Porter, Davis, Phillips. I thought these guys maturing in our system may bode well in the long term. The surgence of ALL these new names makes me VERY nervous. To think we may have another season like we did last season in the secondary makes my stomach queezy.

4. DO YOU THINK THAT THE 2011 RECEIVING CORPS WILL BE RECEIVER BY COMMITTEE?
I sure hope not. For two years we waited for the emergence of Swindall and Lewis. What we got was less than spectacular. If Crabtree was a 100, we expected for those two to be two 90’s at worst to 95’s at best. We did have the emergence of Leong and Torres two years ago. Torres lost season to injury was a big blow. This made the absence of Swindall and Lewis much more painful. Think of the season we could of had is ALL FOUR performed like we know they could have. The receiver corps is, therefore, wide open. SOMEONE, has to step up like no one has stepped up in the last two seasons.
5. WHAT SURPRISES YOU MOST FROM THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEKEND’S HIGHLIGHTS? The maturity of the players.

My Five

1. HOCUTT’S FIRST JOB: i think it’s two-fold. Fundraising, particularly to raise the profile of TT non-revenue sports that stay consistently in the national rankings (e.g. track, tennis, softball) ; and, make the student body interested in men’s basketball again (this may or may not mean hiring a new coach, but what is clear is that just hiring a new coach will not solve the problem).
2. QUARTERBACK RACE: There isn’t one. Tubby has chosen his QB and the only thing that will demote Doege is injuries. Remember Tubby’s “We plan to give Potts and Sheffield equal opportunity to start” and “Sheffield will be playing more.” Tubby said after practice a lot is riding on Doege. Karam will probably be a receiver or linebacker by next fall, and Young is probably being groomed as backup.
3. SURPRISED: No. Tubby didn’t trust most of the personnel he inherited on D—these are HIS boys, and that’s who he will go with.
4. I agree with T.Pirate above.
5. SURPRISES FROM HIGHLIGHTS: The intensity of the practice and the abject negativity of Tubby in post-scrimmage interview. It is the first scrimmage—there are mistakes and growing pains. It really irks me when he says “We’re not a real good team right now” [of course not, it is Spring] then tells us “This was Junior day, we had about 25 recruits here.” Way to sell your program.

Wow, this could world. Wildcat? (maybe we can call it the Matador…just a thought) ANOTHER inside guy? I think I like it. I like the idea of Scotty Young being THE backup. Be given a chance to hold the clipboard and be given mop up duty. There is no guarantee of success later on if/when he inherits the starting jopb. But Id love to see Young on the field like we saw Potts on the field for a TD drive (or was it two?) in the 08 OSU game.

Get a Basketball coach that is proven and can RECRUIT!

1. Hopefully, and me dreaming, get Jerry Sloan to come coach Texas Tech Basketball lol. If not get a coach that first can recruit to Lubbock. We need to get supporters to help fundraise the new baseball stadium. We need to upgrade the facilities. We need better dugouts and a way better clubhouse. Also trying to get Tech’s non conference football games on TV if not some exposure.

5. Surprises from highlights? Video highlights done poorly.

If it isn’t the production, it’s the delivery.

Pause, buffer, pause, buffer, pause… just to load the first 8 seconds of the film.

Intentionally pausing it- to let it load does what? Nothing. It just sits there NOT LOADING.

Then you click play, and nothing happens. Click pause, nothing. Click play, nothing.
Click pause, nothing. THEN click play, and you get another two seconds. Then it starts buffering again.

Are they on dial-up-modems over there or what?
Have they set something up incorrectly?

Ugh.

If its happening to me it’s probably happening to that kid in eighth grade who has dreams about playing for Tech. That kid knows he can get millions of different video’s right now in a hurry, but having been born into a world of the internet and fast computers would have even less patience.

Just went to the UT website, and guess what? I can watch Mac Brown tell me all about his practice with very few pauses.

This may not be a popular opinion, but considering this is the first year that TTU has put out any sort of video, I’m pleasantly pleased with what they’ve done. I’m sure that they know it’s not Oscar worthy material, but it’s better than nothing. I’m also guessing that the production team may consist of a guy and one camera and it’s probably not easy to shoot a television show with the relatively limited budget. This is just my opinion, I’m happy with having something rather than nothing and it’s the first year. I’m also guessing that they know when the video site isn’t going all that well, but that video site is also owned by CBS. Baby steps.

The one guy and a camera model

is how plenty of people earn an income on youtube.
Granted the hardware and internet connection is top notch, but the content can be done very well, even on a very limited budget. SMPfilms is a good example of this. Just a californian guy and he does a fair job.

Plenty of other outlets for video besides youtube can handle it as well.

I still feel they have a lot of kinks to iron out with the video stuff.

by Raider289 on Feb 28, 2011 2:42 PM CST up reply actions

My general thought is that if you know there’s a problem, they probably know there’s a problem too, but it may be completely out of their control for the time-being (budget constraints, lack of a user-friendly website, slow load times, etc.). As to the artistic differences, to each his own. For me, I’d rather have the content, even if it’s not up to par just yet, than not have it at all.

1. WHAT IS NEW AD KIRBY HOCUTT’S FIRST JOB AND MOST IMPORTANT JOB AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR?
First job: spend three days making skid-greasing phone calls to the Pac-10 power brokers for futurre reference…most important job, get a basketball coach who can actually coach basketball.

2. WHAT ARE YOUR EARLY IMPRESSIONS OF THE QUARTERBACK RACE?
From all indications it’s not a race for anything more than the backup…looks like Doege is pretty far ahead.

3. ARE YOU SURPRISED ABOUT THE NOT SO KNOWN NAMES SHOWING UP IN THE SECONDARY AND ARE THERE ANY OTHER SURPRISES FROM LOOKING AT THE DEFENSIVE STATISTICS?
A little surpised, but a lot of it is pleasant. I like open competition…may the best man win, not the most well knows.

4. DO YOU THINK THAT THE 2011 RECEIVING CORPS WILL BE RECEIVER BY COMMITTEE?
I doubt it. Someone will eventually step up to be the comfort zone and go-to player for the QB. Happens with every QB at every level.

5. WHAT SURPRISES YOU MOST FROM THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEKEND’S HIGHLIGHTS?
Didn’t realize how intense things are this early in the process for the players.

Receiver by Committee = Offensive Production like Seasons 09 & 10 = BOOOOOOOOORING!!!

You need ONE guy to step up MORE than Torres in 09 and Leong in 10. You need a guy to step up and DEMAND double coverage ALL the time to open up the rest of the guys. Without Crabtree, Lewis and Swindall did not produce like we hoped. I doubt (sorry) that Torres or Leong could demand double coverage enough to open up teammates

1. WHAT IS NEW AD KIRBY HOCUTT’S FIRST JOB AND MOST IMPORTANT JOB AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR?

I think most importaintly is getting tech men’s basketball on track. no one shows up for games anymore because well… we lose. so I think we need a knockout coach who is at least entertaining if hes not going to win. Sorry Pat, your not your dad…

2. WHAT ARE YOUR EARLY IMPRESSIONS OF THE QUARTERBACK RACE?

I was surprised to see how unimpressive Karam was. I’ve been a Karam fan ever since we recruited him. I know the stats don’t reflect it but I went to the scrimmage on Saturday and I was personally mostly impressed by both Doege and Brewer actually. I acknowledge that yeah brewer didn’t do well statistically. But stats aren’t everything (otherwise Oregon would be our current national champion). I think brewer and doege looked the most comfortable running the offense. Karam looked the worst. that hurts to say.

3. ARE YOU SURPRISED ABOUT THE NOT SO KNOWN NAMES SHOWING UP IN THE SECONDARY AND ARE THERE ANY OTHER SURPRISES FROM LOOKING AT THE DEFENSIVE STATISTICS?

I don’t really care if there known or not just as long as they play good. I was personally most surprised by the good showing of Sawyer Vest. I don’t know where this kid came from or where he has been but I thought he played well. especially since Glasgow was all over him in practices prior to the scrimmage. I was kind of wondering where Jarvis Phillips and Tre Porter were though. that surprises me more than anything.

4. DO YOU THINK THAT THE 2011 RECEIVING CORPS WILL BE RECEIVER BY COMMITTEE?

I think that we need to have a good receiving group as a whole that all works together. that being said I think that we also need a breakout star receiver that leads that receiving group. the way I see it we need our dependable guy who will make great catches and draws the secondary away from the other receivers. Ever notice that’s what happened with Texas in 2008? The secondary was all over Crabtree and it opened up the field for the other receivers. then the other receivers opened up the field for Crabtree to make “the Catch”. so we need both a good committee receiving corp and a breakout Crabtree/Blackman/Bryant/Shipley.

5. WHAT SURPRISES YOU MOST FROM THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEKEND’S HIGHLIGHTS?

like I said I expected Karam to be much better. Also what concerned me most was Neal Browns Play calling. I think that if were going to run more downhill you have to have faith in your downhill run game. there were times in the scrimmage that we lined up in the spread on 2nd and goal at the 5. I say we run pony formation and slam it in there. I personally hope that he called it that way just because it was a scrimmage and doesn’t do that during a game. Ronnie Daniels was most surprising. nothing bad to say about him.

1. WHAT IS NEW AD KIRBY HOCUTT’S FIRST JOB AND MOST IMPORTANT JOB AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR?

Short Term:

- Fire PK. It’s over. The Knights. Myers all of it. Time to turn the page.
- Define and communicate strategy. We’ve never seen that. It would be refreshing.
- Keep Nevada on the schedule

Long Term:

- Keep us in a BCS conference. Get us into the Pac-10 and either leverage it to improve Tech’s position in the Big 12, or move on to the Pac 10.
- Fund Raising
- Whatever else it is that an AD does
- Establish independence from the Chancellor’s office. Chancellors only seem to run the football program at Tech. They don’t at UT, ATM or anywhere else.

2. WHAT ARE YOUR EARLY IMPRESSIONS OF THE QUARTERBACK RACE?

Doege and then everyone else.

3. ARE YOU SURPRISED ABOUT THE NOT SO KNOWN NAMES SHOWING UP IN THE SECONDARY AND ARE THERE ANY OTHER SURPRISES FROM LOOKING AT THE DEFENSIVE STATISTICS?

Didn’t look that closely. But if Tech’s offense generated x number of yards, that means the defense surrendered the same x number of yards. Defenses are normally ahead of offenses in spring training. Obviously not the case here. Reason to be concerned.

4. DO YOU THINK THAT THE 2011 RECEIVING CORPS WILL BE RECEIVER BY COMMITTEE?

Yes, and I think that’s fine.

5. WHAT SURPRISES YOU MOST FROM THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEKEND’S HIGHLIGHTS?

Not too much. I think the team’s strength will be the O-line this year and the following year.

What did Hocutt do at Miami that should impress anyone? Seems to me the football program went into the tank, baseball team has been MIA, and basketball program kind of remained the same.

Looks like y’all still have a lot of issues defensively. Did not see enough speed on the field during your Cotton Bowl practices to make me think the TCU version of the 4-2-5 will work for y’all. We will see.

I still think y’all are going to be a majority run team.

White helmets do not look good. Black helmets, black pants, and red shirt. That is one of the better looking uniforms in the country and should help with recruiting. Why change it?

by miketag on Feb 28, 2011 12:02 PM CST reply actions

Huh? He was only there 2 1/2 years…football went 7-6, 9-4, and 7-6 so he promptly fired the coach. Baseball was in the CWS in 2008 and made the NCAAs pretty much every year since 1971.

Jim Morris has been the coach there for 17 years, so any blip on the baseball radar is clearly not at the feet of Hocutt. 38-22 in 2009 and 43-20 in 2010 (when their season ended in the NCAAs they were ranked 10th).

The 5 Q's

1. WHAT IS NEW AD KIRBY HOCUTT’S FIRST JOB AND MOST IMPORTANT JOB AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR?
His very first action must be to determine the state in which our 17 competitive sports pressently reside, especially basketball. While we all tend to want Junior gone, it is the new AD’s responsibility to make that determination and act as necessary.

2. WHAT ARE YOUR EARLY IMPRESSIONS OF THE QUARTERBACK RACE?
It is still early, but I have always fealt that Seth Doege was very capable. He is now showing that, with no signs of problems from his previous injuries. The rest still need time to understand what is going on. I think Karem and Young are not far behind and, given their immense talent, could push Doege some by the time the new season arrives. I feel Brewer being new to it all will warrent his spending some red-shirt time to catch up to the rest of the gang. The really interesting competition will begin in the Fall, but it is very important that the “back-ups” now keep working to get better so we can have the best possible QB by then.
3. ARE YOU SURPRISED ABOUT THE NOT SO KNOWN NAMES SHOWING UP IN THE SECONDARY AND ARE THERE ANY OTHER SURPRISES FROM LOOKING AT THE DEFENSIVE STATISTICS?
There were a couple of surprises, but I expected some surprises given the talent level we have attained. I like that the tackles, pass breakups, interceptions and sacks were pretty well spread among a bunch of players. Those figures will get better, but they are going up whgainst what may be one of the top offenses in the country, so we should not expect complete domination by the defense now, maybe never.

4. DO YOU THINK THAT THE 2011 RECEIVING CORPS WILL BE RECEIVER BY COMMITTEE?
Yes. Of course, I fel there will be four who will wind up with the major work. Who? We’ll just have to wait and see, as we have some of the best talent available catching the ball.

5. WHAT SURPRISES YOU MOST FROM THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEKEND’S HIGHLIGHTS?
How well the new guys played with it being their first real game-type situation in college. That goes for the “O” and the “D”. More will become visable as the smoke clears, but the team appears to be well stocked at every position, with none being very weak. Again, we will see where it all sits by season start, but for now, I am excited that we have so much talent and that talent is really showing up well.

Since you asked..

1. WHAT IS NEW AD KIRBY HOCUTT’S FIRST JOB AND MOST IMPORTANT JOB AS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR?
It’s time to improve the Tech message. Communicate the way ahead. Find a way to get every Alum who pays taxes to ante up and rebuild the war chest. Take a page out of the UT AD’s book and get the best coaches we can afford. Keep our skirts clean academically, no violations or rouge behavior tolerated.

2. WHAT ARE YOUR EARLY IMPRESSIONS OF THE QUARTERBACK RACE?

Agree with cweber7377 or somebody – it’s not so much a race as it is the leader who emerges, who can make everyone else on the team/unit/squad better. My bet is on Doege but Karam could surprise. Or put another way I don’t think we would be disappointed in him if he was called on as the back up to go in and pull out a game. Just a hunch here.
3. ARE YOU SURPRISED ABOUT THE NOT SO KNOWN NAMES SHOWING UP IN THE SECONDARY AND ARE THERE ANY OTHER SURPRISES FROM LOOKING AT THE DEFENSIVE STATISTICS?
Not so much. The defensive line was mediocre last year, the secondary riddled with untimely injuries and we had B. Duncan playing out of position for coach who seemed a bit befuddled by the speed of the game. In this scenario with a new Def coordinator I bet the kids feel it’s a wide open event just go and give it your best shot.
4. DO YOU THINK THAT THE 2011 RECEIVING CORPS WILL BE RECEIVER BY COMMITTEE?

Gonna go out on limb here and say I’d don’t see how it will be anything but a "starter" by committee. That’s not necessarily a bad thing in that it mitigates the drop off . I don’t see a monster performer at wide out catching 100 plus passes; not Corcker, not Mays and not Ward. They could surprise us all but we have had very few consensus all American wide outs out on the South plains. The average receiver at Tech is very likely going to catch 4 – 5 per game get 55 – 80 yards and score once or not at all. If they all and I mean the 2 deep here do something like this every outing its easy math 350 – 401 yard in the air every time isn’t that what we all want ? An unstoppable assault wearing out the opposing formation 2 deep secondary? That and a few 20 yard romps by the Running backs and I’m happy. Go committee..
5. WHAT SURPRISES YOU MOST FROM THE HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS WEEKEND’S HIGHLIGHTS?

Based on where the coaching staff was going I guess the uptick in defense is a surprise. Really hated being below 50th in the nation this year just made watching painful. I just want to see Jeff Fuller and that ass jacker Wide out from OU on their asses 5 or 6 times a game. Chase Ryan Tannehill, G. Gilbert and Laundry Jones around so much their shoe laces explode. From friction. More seriously with head coach who is a defensive guy and a character like Coach Glasgow we shouldn’t be too surprised that that side of the ball goes form ugly to downright active / good / dare we say respectable? The formula should be bit more coherent for one aspect in particular – assistant coaches knowing the speed of the game. It seemed like at key stretches throughout the 2010 season someone would get surprised by the down and distance versus the package. I don’t think we see half of that in 2011 again a hunch.

It might be the video angles or just that it was so close to the field, but everything looked a little slow. The QB’s passes didn’t appear crisp or lacked some zip. That means he needs to fire PK immediately and get the Basketball team competitive again. He will obviously want to keep graduation rates high too.
