TEXAS TECH BASKETBALL
|
| TEXAS TECH 84, MISSOURI 88 |
One heck of a game and one heck of a way to go out. A highly entertaining game, PG John Roberson was terrific, actually shot above 50% from the field, which seems like that rarely happened this year, but the rest of the team was a bit off. Nevertheless, the team still kept pace with Missouri. And perhaps the biggest surprise was Pat Knight in a suit. Good times. I will fully admit that I'm somewhat glad that the season is over. I don't remember the last time that I had become disenfranchised with a Texas Tech team, but that sorta happened to me and I didn't follow the team as close as I normally would. I think I was just tired of writing similar things after every game. I hate that PK and his staff lost their jobs, but I am looking forward to a transition to a new basketball coach. I'm hopeful again.
I do want to mention that if you want to continue to follow the Big 12 Tournament, check out the men's and women's tournament pages. You can watch online!
I've written quite a bit about how Pat Knight seems to be at peace with this decision and in last night's post-game press conference (PDF), he said that his time at Texas Tech was 10 great years:
Ended on a disappointing note. But it was a great chapter in my basketball career. Ten great years: Seven as an assistant, three as a head coach. It will always be special to me. It's a little different situation than what we went through at Indiana. I love the people, the city, and I love the college. It's not like next year you're going to be sitting there rooting against them or wanting them to do bad. I wish the best for them.
I also thought it was interesting that PK said that he's talked to his dad, Bob Knight, but his dad isn't quite as understanding. I'm sure that's an understatement. I should also point out that LAJ's Courtney Linehan talked with PF Darko Cohadarevic (I still remembered how to spell that), who played on last year's team, and he said that it's going to take time:
"Bringing a new coach to Tech is the choice that is expected to be made by the president and athletic director at this time," Cohadarevic said. "However, I don't believe that this will solve all the problems the Tech basketball program has at the moment, regardless of who becomes a new coach. Tech is building a program and it requires some years for it to become a candidate for a powerhouse and one day become a powerhouse itself."
Darko is right, it does take time and it's entirely possible that it won't solve the problems with the program, but for me, the difference is that with PK no longer the head coach, I'm hopeful and that's more than I would have been had PK stuck around. At the end of the day, I wish PK and all of the seniors a tremendous amount of good fortune.
GAME STORIES | Big 12 Hoops | FWST | DMN (I did want to mention that there's no link to the LAJ because LubbockOnline.com is now charging a subscription, and they do have a game-story up, but they now charge $2.95/month to view more than 25 articles a month. Apparently I'm over the limit. At redraiders.com, there isn't a charge (yet?) but the stories haven't made it to rr.com.
| MORE ON THE COACHING SEARCH |
There are a couple of things. Nebraska head coach Doc Sadler has said that he's not a candidate and Ryan Hyatt tweeted yesterday the following:
Not sure where the Doc Sadler to Texas Tech stuff got started but it is a non-starter on BOTH ends.
So there's that. It seems unlikely that Sadler would remotely comment on another job when his team was just eliminated, but I would view Sadler as a decent hire, but not something that would give me happy pants.

| MISCELLANEOUS |
I missed this yesterday, but LAJ's Don Williams had a notebook, but a large part of this was in my non-transcript from yesterday's post-practice press conference. There are some practice notes that I wanted to make sure you checked out, including ILB Cqulin Hubert played some first team, RB Ben McRoy and LG Lonnie Edwards should be back from injury soon or after spring break, and another mention of another sack by a defensive back, this time by CB Junior Osunde. I think we're going to see some blitzes from some different spots.
I feel like I've linked to this before, but I'll link to it anyway. CFN via FoxSports has their top 20 new coordinators and defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow makes the list at #16:
16. Chad Glasgow, defensive coordinator, Texas Tech
Desperate for defensive help, Red Raiders head coach Tommy Tuberville went across the state and nabbed an assistant from one of America’s most successful staffs. Glasgow has been one of the quiet cogs in Fort Worth for a decade, coaching four safeties in the last four years who’ve signed NFL contracts. All-American Tejay Johnson will be his next pupil to play in the pros. While he’s never been a coordinator, the hope is that he can bring to Lubbock the physicality and swarm tackling that’s become the Horned Frogs persona ever since Gary Patterson took charge in 2001.
Last gig: TCU safeties coach
Replacing: James Willis
ESPN's David Ubben has his spring breakdown of each team and yesterday he took a look at Texas Tech. I think that most of you probably already know most of what's in this post, but it's out there. Also, SI.com's Stewart Mandel asks and answers questions about the Big 12:
Texas Tech: Who wins the quarterback job?
Gone are the days when whoever was anointed the next Texas Tech quarterback was assured of throwing for 5,000 yards, but second-year coach Tommy Tuberville still needs an effective passer as part of his more balanced approach. The Red Raiders, who began practice on Feb. 19, have already held two scrimmages. Rising junior Seth Doege, the veteran of the group, was 17-of-26 for 246 yards and two touchdowns in the first scrimmage, while the challenger, sophomore Jacob Karam, made a move in the more recent outing by throwing for 218 yards and four scores. "We'll see where [Karam] ends up in terms of putting pressure on Doege, but that's the best he's played since he's been here," Tuberville said afterward. Tech is also assessing several possible running threats to replace departed tailback Baron Batch.

| FINAL NON-CONFERENCE SERIES |
I've done a less than stellar job of keeping up with the baseball team, especially after a series. Now that basketball is over, I'm hoping that I'll be a bit better. I didn't have time to do a table this morning so we'll have to rely on the official site for the games, and starting pitchers for this last non-conference homestand where the Red Raiders will host Iowa and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Here's your starters:
Friday, March 11 @ 5:00 p.m.
Texas Tech: Daniel Coulombe (LHP)
Iowa: Jarred Hippen (LHP)
Saturday, March 12 @ 12:00 p.m.
Texas Tech: Jamen Parten (RHP)
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi: Todd Simko (LHP)
Saturday, March 12 @ 4:00 p.m.
Texas Tech: Trey Masek (RHP)
Iowa: Nick Brown (RHP)
Sunday, March 13 @ 4:00 p.m.
Texas Tech: Robbie Kilcrease (LHP)
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi: Ian Campbell (RHP)
Tuesday, March 15 @ 1:00 p.m.
Texas Tech: TBA
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi: TBA
A couple of things. This lineup might be a peek into what happens next week when Big 12 play starts, and if that's the case, then you've got a true freshmen, Masek, vying for a starting job. Kilcrease I think is still an option to start, but he struggled against TCU (the whole team did). One other thing is that redshirt freshman Duke VonSchamann will be starting in right field. VonSchamann was injured the first part of the year with some undisclosed off-the-field injury, but apparently he's ready to go. This is a really young team.

The Darko comment that may speak volumes:
“As an athlete who has been through coaching changes, Cohadarevic knows how challenging it is to adjust to a new staff.
But he points out there are also issues off the court, including boosters and administrators trying to micromanage the coaching staff."
"As we continue to merely "talk about championships""
I wonder if that doesn’t go on everywhere, though. I think the days of the staff running the show from an island are in the rear view mirror. Boosters have always had influence, but I think it’s gotten to a point that at some places the staff is completely neutered. Not at all implying that happened here in this instance, but I have a feeling coaches in some places don’t have a lot of power inside or outside the program.

Maybe there was a reason PK referred to him as “Coach”

Knight in the suit
that was the most awkward thing all night. another close one. To me that always comes down to coaching. Darko may have a point, but when you can’t win the close ones it’s usually a matter of who has the better coach.

Despite all, Pat showed a lot of class.
Knowing that his job was on the line, knowing that he had players that did not have a knack for making that had-to-have steal or basket in the last 30 seconds, Pat could have gone viral. Instead, he closed out his tenure the way I hope I can if I get fired. I think this shows that he has matured in three years. This was his first HC job, after all. I think he set himself up to get a decent job offer and the new school does not have to worry about fallout if they take a chance on him. I think in 10 years he will be taking teams to a tournament most years. A good fit for him would be a school where men’s BB is the main sport, like Butler, Marquette, St. Johns as examples. There are other schools out there where he could make a difference. I think he did not meet with Gerald because he did not want to fray the friendship between his dad and Gerald. Let Bailey be the bad guy. Pat knew it was coming, there was no real choice. I wish you and your staff the best, Pat. Good luck, and thanks for doing your best on behalf of my alma mater.
Very well said
+1 to that.

Much more class act than his dad
of course a cockroach has more class than his dad. Not that I have strong feelings…

i found another football article. Don’t know if you’ve posted it yet.

Whoever said, 'It's not whether you win or lose that counts,' probably lost.
Most readers on DTN try to steer clear of Bleacher Report
for me, if I read anything from Bleacher Report, my nose bleeds and I develop a small case of IBS.
You are more than welcome to post it as a fanshot. That’s what they are their for.

Pat
recognizes the best part of Lubbock…..the people. I am with anyone that figures that out.
#19? I’ve got Chad G down as the biggest coordinator move since the big tuna strolled the sidelines in the hub city…..but I am drinking the glasgowade like I had been playing hoops at the rec center for 3 hours and someone offered me bottle water instead of lubbocks finest tap water.

Gillespie
Of all those coaching candidates they showed on the screen during last night’s game, would any of you be happy with anyone BUT Gillespie? I know he has had some off the court issues, but in my mind he’s the only “real” coach of the bunch.

I agree
This program needs a spark badly and BCG will get people to fill in the seats as early as next season if he’s the coach. I could care less about a coaches past mistakes especially one that had made an effort to get his life back on track. Bobby Knight had worse past coming into Tech than this guy would. I’m fine with BCG’s character as of today.

Let’s not forget Bobby had a big hand in why Kent Hance is chancellor of Texas Tech now. He personally lobbied against Smith to step down.

Agreed!
We accepted Bobby Knight, warts and all, and he was awesome for Texas Tech. He brought interest, and TV eyeballs, and he also taugh Tech a lot about how to raise money, and we listened.
He was a great asset to our team!
Gillispie will make things happen, bring in talent, put a winner on the floor and fill up USA!
I'm all for second chances,
but multiple DUIs create an issue not easily ignored.

i thought he got one and not multiple?

Holy crap!!
Okay, one DUI is not a huge milestone in life. But three? Sounds like the dude is on at least his fourth chance with that sort of thing. Thank you, but no. Yeah, it’s a moral high-horse but that’s the beauty of this interweb thingy.
he was only charged for one (i think) DUI the others were dropped. and there is a big difference between ad DUI and a DWI.

Just an observation
How CLASSY is everything today? Suddenly we are all driving Cadillacs!
All I am hearing about today is just how mind-bendingly CLASSY, PK is.
Almost as if it is to ILLUSTRATE a CONTRAST.
I am suspicious of the origin of this message, and it almost seems intentional and even manufactured start to finish and packaged for the media. Just a hunch.
No one cares about basketball, but suddenly every news outlet in town is leading with broadcasts on just how earth-shatteringly classy Pat Knight is and that- WOW -we should all be amazed and applaud it.
Seems weird to me and sorta doesn’t feel right, so (not that there is some conspiracy, mind you-) I am starting to think that this was very carefully engineered to be just this way. Not that I am fully convinced of this, but it feels very artificial so far.
You can be a nice guy and not win basketball games
The guy got fired but I don’t think it’s a conspiracy that most people wish he’d panned out precisely because of the way he comports himself and manages the off-the-court aspects of the team

PK needs another position and hopefully as a HC
His agent might have something to do with this since PK is in the job market for another HC spot.
He is looking very marketable between what he is saying, doing and wearing.
Plus I think PK tries very hard to NOT be like his Dad in his demeanor and how he handles different situations.
I think PK really is a good guy and tries hard to do and say the right things.
I wish PK and his staff the best of luck in their future endeavors
.
NUTS - Never Underestimate TEAM Strength
Classy
I only know PK from what I read here and what was linked here. The consensus even before calling for his termination was that he was a class act. Which makes this situation harder because we like good and classy people. PK will find another HC job. I agree with a previous poster, at a smaller or lesser football school. Hopefully the assistants will get their shot too.
