At Texas Tech, eighteen teams made the trip primarily to watch Taylor Potts and the signal caller did not disappoint. Potts displayed good accuracy, timing and looked sharp on the more than two dozen passes he tossed. Scouts were most impressed by his ability to take snaps from under center, drop into the pocket with balance and easily move around then get rid of the ball. It looked very natural from a quarterback that took the majority of his collegiate snaps from the shotgun formation. This no doubt vaults Potts, who’s flown under the radar for most of the season, into the late rounds.
Sources told us receiver Detron Lewis was slow, running in the 4.6’s.

If accurate..
this pretty much confirms my suspicion that we were more a victim of subpar athletes (and a ridiculous number of injuries to boot) than it was that we were suffering from bad coaching ora bad quarterback last year. I thought all last year that Potts was more than good enough and that Tubs was handcuffed with inferior players as opposed to being a bad coach. And if I’m being reasonable, I don’t expect a huge leap forward this coming year. I expect that there is undeniable improvement in 2011, but no earth shattering leap forward. That said, I do expect very big things in 2012. Also – although I always make clear I am a Leach fan, I don’t think Leach would have ended up with a much better record last year. Maybe one game better, simply because the same system would have been in place and because the conference was definitely in a down year, but not because this was the best group he would have ever fielded as he quoted. I still maintain that was strictly a PR play.
Lets be generous
and say that the offense would have been about the same, is there any question that the defense would have been substantially better without the James fiasco? I suspect the offense would have been a bit better as well.

It is hard to argue against what I think you are saying – that if we had kept the defense in Ruffs hands, both he and his style of D were better suited to be saddled with lesser caliber athletes. But if we had the same injuries, even under Ruff those the starters were of questionable quality as a whole, and their backups would still have been exposed. But obviously the 3-4 was a bad thing to force on them.
Lets talk about the injuries, I think the injuries are a direct result of implementing the new system. When players are unsure of what they are doing they tend to play tenatively. When you play tenatively, you get hurt.

Potts has always shined at ‘practice’.

Potts shines, Detron dims
Well, hopefully Tech will have a couple or three players drafted. Keeping my fingers crossed.

this should be no surprise.
I’ll say it for the 1000th time… this group of receivers is mediocre at best.
this was the reason
I kind of found it stupefying that last year’s Wildcat package so prominently featured Detron doing jet sweeps that never went anywhere. But moving past that, it’s unfair to him as a player to pretend like no one noticed he wasn’t a burner until just now, especially considering he’s a better bet in other areas like blocking, route-running, hands, and YAC than a lot of NFL-bound receivers who are going to get noticed more simply because of the 40-time bias that is endemic to pro evaluations of wide receivers and cornerbacks. I say move him to the slot and give him a fair shake in preseason.

Is it going to be odd when Potts ends up starting in the NFL
and making a damn good QB?
Now I’m seriously wondering what he would have looked like in a Pro Style Offense and what he might have accomplished. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad he came and played at Tech.

So there's still that chance?

Gonna need a dominating O line, cuz I don't think he's gotten any faster
But the dude can take a beating, and for a NFL QB who plays from the pocket that’s a pre requisite even with the best protectors. And I’m pretty sure NFL receivers don’t whine about the ball being thrown too hard. But ya, it WILL be odd if he ever gets in a game while GH is still throwing to the practice team.
