NFL Combine - Remnants of the Leach Era

This senior class has benn through more than any team in the country. The transition from the Leach doing more with less to the Tubs and Jeep doing what ever it was they were trying to do during the 2010 season. Tubs took leaps in recruiting and from what the NFL thinks we were really behind. Colby Whitlock being our only participant in this years combine. While:

Baylor - 2

Atm - 2

Colorado - 3

Mizz - 3

OK - 4

OKSt - 4

Tex - 5

Neb - 9

Yes I understand we have a small graduating class and the differences between the NFL and collge game but even Baylor and Colorado had more raw talent, thats tough to take and hopefully things are chaingin on the South Plains!

Im not a big NFL fan but I do love watching the combine. Its facinating when elite guys (Julio Jones, Patrick Petersen)  stand out above an already selective group of extreamly talented players.

I think this is more about the utter failure in 2010 than about Leach era. But that is ok, lets blame Leach since he isn’t here anymore. I do think think that if the 2010 team had reached anywhere near it’s potential, then we would be looking at some different numbers. You mention Julio Jones, think back, we had a real chance to bring him in because of the Leach era.

…and here I thought this sort of Leach v. Tubs chatter was a thing of the past.

As mentioned above

Last year was tough because of the team adjusting (sometimes not so well) to all the changes, offensively and defensively. I don’t see where Leach can be be held accountable since he was not here. Remember, he stated prior to being kicked out that he anticipated a big year in 2010. When players are placed out of position and expected to keep up the top performances that they have given in the past, it simply does not always work out very well, as we saw. More continuity this year and the move of players back to their best position should translate into better results, especially with a better overall scheme. I expect a better year this year than most, but I am an optimist at heart.

This is on Leach

There is no possible way to blame Tuberville for the lack of players in the combine this year. Mike Leach had 4 years with these players, Tuberville had 1. They were recruited by Mike and brought up through the system by Mike. Baylor and Colorado having more “talent” speaks to Mike’s recruiting style/ability and not towards the one year of development Tuberville had and was supposed to magically make players into NFL players out of certain players.

I will admit, Potts got snubbed after a markedly improved senior season, and I think he’ll sign on as a free agent somewhere.

He had a hand in global warming too

I’m still searching for the smoking gun but I just know it in my gut. Leach is the sort of guy to cook the earth & laugh as we all fry to death.

What is "Good-Strong" and why is there always so much more of it after a jump?

I think

The Pirate Captain may have rested on his laurels a bit.

It pains me to say that and we may never REALLY know, but you can only go so far relying on the old “recruit 2-3 star recruits and coach them up playing on their inferiority complex cuz they didnt get recruited by UT/OU”

No one loves the Pirate Captain more than me but the RIverboat Gambler rolled the dice (pun intended) on beating/getting/stealing recruits from those exact same programs….Cooper Washington anyone?

I applaud The Gambler/Drifter on his FIRST true recruiting class and I know it will only get better

Worth noting....

I’m not sure Leach believed that 2010 was going to be special. I think he felt the noose closing in and was making a PR statement. The animosity between him and the higher ups was huge, if not public, at the time. I loved having him as our coach, and I think he got screwed, but I think that statement was a defensive move in light of his worsening relationships with the admin/BOR/James gang. I have no doubt he believed we would finish 3-4 at worst. But that would not have been special in light of the background in which the thought was thrown out there. We had just sat at #2 in the country the year before.

On the surface, Tubs is the better recruiter. The current lack of combine representation is more on Leach than Tubs. Tubs isn’t scott free, but I excuse him because it was a transition year. That aside – the talent was just not at combine levels.

We understood you Dunka..

the real truth of the matter was somewhere in the middle. I.e. players playing out of postion, coaches not ready for the speed of the league play, changing the system and the intangible playmaker factor. You saw that with the Potts – Leong mojo. But that’s about it.

Leach was not hugely interested in recruiting or he was not real well recieved by High School Head coaches or some such thing none of us can see or veify. IMO.

Baron Batch

Without the James fiasco, I think Baron would have been a solid midround selection.
