ODDS AND ENDS

PROGRAMMING NOTES

With everything that's been going on, I've temporarily forgotten about some things, including the football post season awards and as I had one emailer ask me yesterday, what about baseball.  This is more or less about me having enough time and if I miss a story, it's either unintentional or I have just run out of time.  And this reminds me that I have a baseball post coming up later today, we'll have the special teams review on Thursday or Friday and a reprise of the football awards after the spring game.

And don't forget to check out Totally Texas Tech's TTURed new spring pictures.

BIG 12 FOOTBALL FINANCES

I haven't had the time or the energy to take a look at the recent Forbes' Kristi Dosh article (hat-tip ESPN's David Ubben) about the Big 12 football finances and who is making money and who isn't.  Apparently, the football program makes a profit of about $11 million and the athletic program makes a profit of about $5 million.  I think you'll be interested in some of the other numbers, so please feel free to have fun in the comments.

TEXAS TECH BASKETBALL

THE GILLISPIE ANTICIPATION

Although it's not official, Texas Tech's newest head coach, Billy Clyde Gillispie, has been on a media blitz.  Yesterday, he was on the radio with the Williams and Hyatt Show, The Ticket (could not find the audio, but I've linked to a transcript), Galloway & Co. and 105.3 the Fan.  Since I'm not into transcribing audio, here's a bit from The Ticket transcript:

On if there were other job offers in the past two years:  I had a couple of opportunities, but I was going to be very picky. I've been fortunate to be able to be kind of picky, and I'm always appreciative of anyone giving me an opportunity. But I really wanted to be at a place that really cared about basketball, and if I did my job, where it was going to be really important in the community, as far as fan following and those kind of things. Texas Tech University is located in a great town, it's a great college town, and they love their sports, and they just need a reason to get excited, and I think we're going to provide that reason for them.

And I'm sure that he was on Tech Talk and maybe some Houston area radio shows, but this is all I could find. I also want to point out KAMC's interview with former Red Raider Gionet Cooper, who was coached by Gillispie when Cooper was in high school Killeen Ellison High School.  Gillispie had a pretty big impact on Cooper and in the 2 minutes for the story, it's easy to see why his players play hard for him.

And if you have time to listen to some of the audio, you can tell that Gillispie feels that he's incredibly lucky to be doing what he's doing and he's ready to get started at Texas Tech.  That's inspiring for me personally and I'm excited.

LAJ's Courtney Linehan writes that Gillispie wants NBA players, and he mentions this a couple of times on the radio:

"The biggest secret on turnarounds is having great players," Gillispie said. "We’re going to have NBA players, guys that are going to get drafted, guys that are going to represent this school well and graduate from it."

FWST's Jennifer Floyd Engel writes that Texas Tech's new athletic director now has her attention because he hired Gillispie:

He had been wooing Gillispie since before he officially became AD. He pursued and cajoled and, most important, finished. He had Gillispie excited about Tech, and thereby has Tech fans excited in a way we have not seen since The Pirate Ship was rocking after Michael Crabtree found his way into that end zone.

Of course, then-AD Gerald Myers (and I remember his name because he was a colossal idiot), current Chancellor Kent Hance and Little Pony Express screwed that up by conspiring via e-mail to fire Leach, then actually doing it for silliness.

Although these are a day old (and thank you DTN readers for linking to it in the comments yesterday) The Chron's Richard Justice:

I heard from a stream of them—and from Billy Clyde himself—when UH was searching for a basketball coach. They convinced me hiring Billy would be a really smart thing to do, that he really had changed, that he would be beyond thankful to the school willing to take a chance on him.

Texas Tech has made a potentially great hire. Billy Clyde will get players and he'll do the right thing by those players and he'll put a great product on the floor.

I don't know if Texas Tech now has the Big 12's best coach, but Billy Gillispie takes a backseat to no one. All he needs to do is manage himself a bit better. If he hasn't taken a long look at himself after two years away, he probably never will.

And the AAS's Kirk Bohls:

Texas Tech basketball just became relevant. The hiring of Billy Gillispie puts the Red Raiders on the map, although his five-year contract had better include specific language about a high buyout if he gets early wanderlust, and job termination in the event of a DUI conviction. A Gillispie friend told me the new Tech coach already has lined up commitments from six players. The Big 12 just got a lot tougher.

And we found out yesterday that Gillispie is searching for a coaching staff, talking to one of the best high school basketball coaches, but was turned down, and according to RRS.com's Chris Level, he's talking to some former Red Raiders:

Gillispie telling @BrandonRaweKLBK and I that he has exchanged text messages with Darvin Ham and Jason Sasser in last 48 hours. #TexasTech

I really like this move.  Ham is currently the head coach for the Albuquerque Thunderbirds, an NBA D-League team, and I'm guessing that Sasser is still trying to play basketball, but maybe he's ready to do something else.

TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL

SPRING GAME DETAILS

I've had something come up and I'm not going to be able to go to the spring game.  I know, this makes me an awful human being, but this is where I need your help.  This will hopefully be about what DTN can do as a community.  First and foremost, I understand that the game is broadcast on local television and I was curious if anyone would be willing and or able to tape the game and send a DVD or VHS.  I know, this is asking a ton and I'd be more than happy to pay for the mailing.

Second, we, the DTN community needs people to cover the game.  Here's my idea and you can let me know if this is bullsh or if this would work.  I was thinking that we could have everyone take a position.  First come, first serve.  For example, we could have someone who is going to the game to watch the secondary and be able to comment on specific players in the secondary.  Or if someone wants to take the quarterbacks, then they report on the QB's.  After the game, you could each email me your thoughts and we could have our very own DTN community review of the spring game.

Back to the field stuff, the official site has a preview of the spring game, but it's more or less about all of the other athletic events going on around campus.  There were two other bits of information picked up yesterday, which is that N. Carolina signee DT Delvon Simmons is still waiting on an official release and ESPN's Ivan Maisal writes about how Texas Tech has had their spring practice split up with spring break.

This may be opening a can of worms and has been asked elsewhere by another DTN reader, but is there a difference between Tuberville and Gillispie talking about winning championships?

For me, it never bothered me for Tuberville to say that he wants to win championships, I somewhat expect that type of talk, but there hasn’t been the outrage/discussion with Gillispie, who has said that he wants to win championships at Texas Tech. Just curious if it’s the personalities between them, the timing of their hirings, etc.

Never be the guy that follows THE GUY

None of that sturm and drang about championships was a reflection on Tuberville himself. It was all a perceived slapdown at the deficiencies of his predecessor. I’ll start taking Tubs talk of championships seriously when he beats multiple Big 12 South schools in the same season.

I think most of it of it was a reflection of Tubs, and less so a slap down of the old guy.(I don’t see that in his nature.)
A good bit of it was his salesmanship of himself entering a bad situation, too.

This, in and of itself, wasn’t what bothered me – My problem is that he came up short game after game. Couldn’t walk the talk, and this is more the issue – for me. Even if he was just being optimistic.

by Raider289 on Mar 22, 2011 7:51 AM CDT up reply actions

I didn't mean to imply that Tubs intended it as any comment on Leach's success or lack of same

It’s just that that is how it was taken by many people still attached to Leach at the time. I think most of us have accepted the new reality since then. A little hyperbole never hurt anyone. If it helps him convince his players that a championship is in the realm of possibility, then by all means, talk championships.

I agree with this...

We could have breathed life into Knute Rockne and his pre-game speeches would have been shredded by a percentage of the fan base. I don’t think it was Tuberville, per se. It was that he wasn’t Mike Leach for some people. I think it was just misplaced anger about the situation. People were too sensitive to the words he said and I think just assumed, in some cases, that Tubs was being a bit backhanded to the previous regime. I think they were wrong on his intent.

This board, of the two or three Tech boards I skulk around on, has by far the most residual Leach support than the others combined.

Leach's success or lack of same?

Since 2004, Tech has finished in the top 25 every year except 2006 until the arrival of Tuberville. Some may call this mediocre, but I don’t get that thinking.

Agree w/ mbrown

about it not being about Tuberville himself as much as it was about the situation he walked into. It seems with the passing of time a lot of folks are warming up to Tuberville, myself included.

At time of football coaching change:
winning program + firing of way favorite coach in dirty way + introduction of new coach who talks about “winning championships” like it’s a new idea = unhappy/offended divided fan base

At time of basketball coaching change:
losing program + firing of likable but ineffective “legacy” coach who endorsed his successor + exciting new coach with proven track record of turning programs around = win/win & everybody is happy

Yeah, I really don't want a new coach...

to come in and say: “Well, we are gonna suck, or just be mediocre. Go Team.” I want coaches that are confident. Tubbs knows he is building on the success of Leach. Just like Auburn built on his success there. Tubbs and Billy G bring D-Fense.. that is the game changer and what can lead to championships. Tech is in a good place.

Actually

I think the defensive failures last year had more to do with Tubs allowing Willis to run the whole thing without interference, than with Tubs interfering with the defense. His interferences were more on the offensive side, I think. Because of the type of personnel still on the team and the types arriving, the defensive changes being implimented this year by Glassgow are more in line to what Tubs has done in the past. It will also will mean much improvement. Oh, and a note: The offense will be back-BIG TIME.

It's all in the timing

Tommy Hawley was faced with a seriously divided fanbase and his talk of “championships” fanned the flames- saw it on DTN almost everyday. It seemed too arrogant too quickly.

Billy Clyde is coming into a totally different situation. 99% of the fanbase is thrilled to have him and will hang on every word.

The good news is that we have the best named coaches in USA. Tommy Hawley and Billy Clyde might have to get together and do the Ag report on KFYO.

The differences are great.

There was a high level of want-to about replacing Coach Pat…he was not sniffing championships.

The football coach was fired in an atmosphere of controversy…the fanship was, and to some degree is, angry.

The announcement for the new football coach included some remarks negative to the prior like the number of times we won vs Texas.

The new football coach comes in talking his shtick without knowing all the detailed background in conversations on the webs, esp DTN, and looks like he is acting like the admin…whether he was or not. A coach is supposed to sell his program…with his words and thoughts, certainly in the manner which has brought him success-however that might be measured.

My Take

I’d more more worried if I had a coach who didn’t talk about winning. Tuberville and BCG are bringing an attitude of winning. That’s a good thing and apparently the recent signing class proves that kids are listening. We are very lucky to have the coaches we have at Tech today and we should all expect great things in the near future. All I’ve ever heard was you can’t recruit to Lubbock which is utter BS. 2012 will be a very good year for tech athletics.

Re:
but is there a difference between Tuberville and Gillispie talking about winning championships?

I don’t think so in terms of the way the fans should react. I didn’t have a problem with Tuberville doing it, either, but rolled my eyes a bit when it became either a reason to either applaud him as a serious coach or detract him as an all hat, no cattle kind of guy. Coaches are supposed to talk about winning championships.

There is a circumstantial difference, though. Rightly or wrongly a lot of fans took Tuberbville’s promise of championships as a subtle dig at Mike Leach, as he had never won a championship. There was enough sheer volume of championship talk that, again rightly or wrongly, a lot of fans easily concluded that Tuberville really was taking a shot at Leach. I don’t think anyone believes Gillespie is taking shots at Pat Knight when he talks about championships, because there isn’t a controversy surrounding Pat Knight’s departure, he was a liked but not loved coach, and the two are friends, in any event.

So to answer your question I think it is “the timing of their hirings.”

To my ear...

On top of what has already been said, I just found TT’s talk about championships to ring hollow. Kinda like that used car salesman (trite, I know, but it fits) who keeps telling you that he’s got this great new car with awesome features, but he can’t tell you any of them beyond generalizations when questioned.

TT = “Yeah, this car will win you races, and it has awesome, advanced technological features.”
Fan = “Ok…tell me about the features.”
TT = “Well, it drives real nice, has a radio, has all kinds of fancy stuff.”
Fan = “Like what?”
TT = “….sure is windy today.”

Like I said, TT’s talk of championships just sounded like words covering ineptitude. Hear me: I’m not calling TT inept. That’s just how it sounded. Empty words.

When BCG talks about NBA players and championships, there seems to be some passion and sincerity there.

Then again, maybe it’s just because when we hired TT, it’s like we switched from a loaded Ford truck to a slightly older year-model Chevy with 50,000 miles on it; whereas with BCG, we’re switching from a Hyundai to an Infiniti.

There…I got all my car sales similies and analogies out of my head.

RE: Who's making money in Big 12

While the article is interesting and there is a decent correlation between the numbers and league wins-losses, it’s not a complete picture. The author points out that Kansas has disproportionately high expenditures; however, a $3 million payout to Mark Mangino during the report period (and presumably paid from football funds) would have a highly significant impact on their financial performance. If that accounting is true, it puts Kansas’ football expenses in the $8 – $9 million range — a number approximately equal to their basketball budget. This is just one example that immediately came to mind as I reviewed the article. While the numbers are not irrelevant, one should at least consider the accuracy.

by CRV on Mar 22, 2011 8:25 AM CDT reply actions

take note

At the bottom, the article notes that the numbers are from the 2009 season (not 2010), considering how 2008 was, I assume 2009 was a banner year for funding. Really, they should’ve looked over a ten year period or at least 5 to try to smooth out single year impacts. I don’t know if 2010 was “bad”, but I assume 2009 was pretty good.

2011, 2012, and beyond

There has been a lot of change recently with Texas Tech Athletics. I think it is all positive. Texas Tech is getting a lot of publicity right now, and all is generally positive. The Tier 1 status, Tubberville, Glasgow, Myers stepping down, Holcutt, now Gillispie, this has to be a good thing to potential students. It feels like all this change and publicity are generating some momentum. I, for one, am excited about the next few years. We have a tough football schedule next season, but I look for us to finish slightly better than last year. I think Tubberville and co. will make some improvements and set the football team up for a great 2012.

I’m a 5’ 8" white guy, so I couldn’t give a sh!t about basketball. However, I would actually watch a Tech game or two and maybe follow it some if we are winning. I would love to see us make a decent showing in the NCAA tournament. Gillispie sounds like he has some recruits in his pocket that can come in and make a huge difference. I don’t think we can realistically expect a championship next year, but again 2012 looks promising.

I’m not much of a spring game fan. The 5.5 hours on the road for a scrimmage just don’t compute for me. I love Tech football but I rarely see these games as a true indictor of where or what a team will look like in the fall. I’ve seen him enough times to make that an easy choice. But if it’s Garth Brooks then it’s a tough call. I’ve only seen him once and that is most definitely not enough!

I feel like Garth Brooks is the equivalent of "Dusty" in Pure Country

pre leaving the band.

George Strait puts on a good show without all the hoopla, lights, and smoke.

We even planned our pregnancy around Football and Hunting Season. People need to adjust to my schedule. For serious.

Garth Brooks one man accoustical show in Vegas

is the single best concert I have ever seen. Just him and his guitar playing in a small theater. He covers different types of music (his too of course) over the decades from the 60’s on – he is INSANELY talented and VERY funny.

Have never seen his fully produced show but I think I’m spoiled now. Don’t think it gets better than his one man show.

Who is George Strait?

Looks like you all are a little bit of country and I’m a little bit of rock & roll.

Your Eddie Cochran reference trumps my Donnie & Marie Osmond reference

Not that it would have taken much.

I get told I look like Marie Osmond a lot, any chance you look like Donny?

It’s hard to tell with all that makeup on your face in your picture… ;-)

That's a random student I photographed Nov 1st, 2008

She was waiting for the student section gates to open. It was a real circus in the student section that night. Everybody was done up for Halloween.

But to answer your question, I had a pledge brother in my fraternity who was the spitting image of Donny Osmond

I don’t particularly look like him, but I am a little bit of rock and roll. So we have that in common.

Variety is the spice of life...

put me down for in for much of what both ‘the edge’ in dallas plays and what ‘the ranch’ plays…..foo fighters followed by Jack Ingram is how my Iphone rolls.
