Red Raider Hoops | Billy Gillispie Makes it Official to Texas Tech
PRESS CONFERENCE @ 10:00 A.M. | Consider this as your open thread for today's press conference to announce Billy Gillispie as the new head coach for Texas Tech. Doors open at 9:15 a.m. and you're supposed to wear red. More details can be found at the official site and I think you can watch the press conference live. Feel free to link if there are other outlets to watch the presser.
MEETING WITH PLAYERS | LAJ's Courtney Linehan writes Gillispie held his first meeting with the players on the team:
"We had a very good meeting in the locker room," Gillispie said. "It was the first time I've had a chance to meet with them face-to-face, and they seem ready to move in the right direction."
Gillispie has also made contact with the five recruits who signed last spring under Pat Knight's staff. He said he's seen most of them play, and is positive about the prospects for next year's team.
One of the goals set during that locker room meeting was to reach the NCAA tournament in 2012. He said once he has fully assessed the roster and recruits he will move quickly to fill any gaps.
"You want to give yourself the best roster to work with starting in October next year," Gillispie said. "I really do think it's all about the players, developing relationships with returnees and recruiting a great class."
MISCELLANEOUS | The Chron's Jerome Solomon opines that Gillispie is where he belongs and DMN's Mike Graham has his season in review, which includes a reference that SF Jaye Crockett and PG Javarez Willis was the team's biggest surprise, however, from what we learned earlier in the week, Willis may not be back because of grades.
GILLISPIE IN THE MEDIA | There are a handful of links about Gillispie in the media still, including ESPN's Outside The Lines talking with college basketball analyst Jimmy Dykes about the hire of Gillispie. Dykes approves of the hire. Sports Radio Interviews has a partial transcript of Gillispie's interview with 105.3 The Fan and here's a snippet:
Can he win at Texas Tech?: "You better believe it. I’m really looking forward to that. I think they have some really good players returning and I think they’ve signed a nice group. … We’ll definitely go assess those things and add maybe some other guys in this late signing period. But when you have a place that has a great university and a great community that really cares about athletics and sports and a great conference … you can definitely win."

I'm sooooo pumped
Go Gillispie! Full speed ahead.
Its not like I needed anything else to get me excited about Billy G, but;
he said he would check out the roster and fill any gaps. That is what I am talking about. Wish I was there today, can’t wait to watch.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
Press conference
Did not get to see event. Couldn’t get the official sight linked to phone. Please post links of media coverage. It was mentioned on KDFW morning news in the 0500 segment. Chip Wagoner displayed double guns up when mentioning it.

Tried that live and it was a no go on the mobile. I know the local LBK was on it, will just wait for others to post links.

The link at 12:20CST is not working
.
RR78 — Thanks for the link but it is not working
This is very frustrating for those of us that could not be there or watch it live
Hopefully Tech will fix the issue soon.

press conference was good
there was about 1000 people there. The north endzone of the USA was about 90% full. Hocutt spoke well of him and then BCG made some good comments about wanting to be here full time, learning from mistakes, getting big guys on the roster (probably glad Roberson is gone)
Very likeable and well spoken. He often joked with press members and the administration. He likened Kent Hance to Mark Twain.
Very good first impression!
Very excited
I will not be able to view anything until I get home. I do wish 10X people showed up, but it is a work & school day, so 1000 is OK I guess.

And...
It would have been awesome to hold the presser on Saturday when alumni and their families are in town for the Spring Game. I know 5 people who have been in attendance!!
Go to the official site and look at the video titled 'A New Era Begins'
some nice shots from the past….

+1 I hope he keeps jennings and bring ham in as assistant coaches.

Darvin Ham's ... when he shattered that Backboard the picture made the cover of Sports Illustrated
.
I loved watching Ham play. He always had so much energy.
That shot also provided the momentum that got Tech to the Sweet 16 that year.
That is the kind of energy and smooth plays and teamwork I want to see Tech BB always have.
It’s a pretty good video

Good news to hear. I guess the NC mail service is a little slow.

Great presser
Gillispie seems like he’s a great fit for the Lubbock/Tech culture. This guy has loads of personality and will more than likely do very well recruiting players to Tech. I know little about basketball but I’m already a fan and will make a solid effort to come out for home game next season. Do people tailgate for basketball?

I made the press conference tday
Yes, there were approximately 1,000 persons in the north end of the arena. Raider Red, cheer squad, and the Goin’ Band was there.
What I got from BCG was that he would be recruiting “tall guys that can play the game”. That got the crowd going!
tall guys that can play the game
Why didn’t pk thinl of that. Or even short guys that play defense. Sic em Billy Clyde

Assistant coaches will be experienced and good friends with Gillispie.
Just from what has been seen of Gillispie over the years, it is a certainty he will surround himself with assistant coaches who are well respected around the country and experienced enough to know what to do when things get close or moving the wrong way. No more youngsters. I like the mention of Ham and Malaise, but I have a feeling Billy C. will bring in someone he feels most comfortable with. He is going to move fast and furious so expect a lot of action from the basketball offices for the next several months.

Who initially mentioned that BCG talked with Ham and Sasser? Is that their report or internet rumor? If your assessment is correct, what is his connection to Ham?

Would love to watch the full press conference,
but, as with the spring scrimmage highlights, the video on the official site starts and stops so frequently that it is painful to watch even for just a couple of minutes. (My previous description of it as “jerky” drew a couple of cute comments.) The ads preceding the video run smoothly, so I don’t think it’s due to heavy Internet traffic. I tried a couple of different browsers with similar results. Are others having this problem? If so, someone at Tech or CBS, which Seth pointed out hosts the site for Tech, should be ashamed.
Try the link tied to the story...
.
On my PC, the small video window on the home page of the Texas Tech Athletics (Featured Video) does have the horrible skipping.
But the one tied to the story worked great for me. (Full Press Conference)

I am not sure if you have tried this link.

I was able to watch the whole press conference.

Your last link is working great today,
but going to this same page on the official site yesterday gave me only the short, tiny, herky-jerky video.
maybe we'll start putting names on those jerseys
i get the purpose, but this isn’t middle school.
It’s hard to match players and names when we’re only on TV four times a year
