| BILLY GILLISPIE PRESS CONFERENCE |
The press conference transcript (PDF) can be seen here and I'll be honest, I'm incredibly excited. Gillispie seemed humble, but proud of his accomplishments (he should be) and perhaps the best part of the presser was Gillispie's story about one of his former players and a current Lubbock vice principal, Gionet Cooper (Ed. the transcript has Gionet's name misspelled, but I have corrected it):
I have a former player here that I coached at Ellison high school a few years ago. Gionet Cooper, I'd like for him to stand up if he would. Real short story about Gionet. When I first took over at Killeen Ellison High School, and he's going to kill me for saying this. But when I went in there he said this guy's got a little talent. He was a freshman. He weighed a little less than he does now. He was a little skinny kid. But they said, coach, he's got a bad attitude. He'll never graduate and won't go to class. But have you finished your doctorate degree? He completes his doctorate degree in December, and an assistant principal here in Lubbock, Texas. And one of the greatest success stories because he has great heart, great compassion, determination, and drive.

If this is Gillispie's goal, to connect, to create a family, to win, and to help his players be better human beings, then I'm all in. And if you didn't watch KAMC's story on Gionet Cooper (for the love of everything that is good, please make tiny video player just a wee bit bigger) and the credit he gave to Gillispie for the person he's become, then you need to go watch it.
When asked about what style of basketball Gillispie will play:
Winning, the winning style.
Again, I'm all in. And he also said that this team needs some height. Yes please.
And with all of the coaching turnover across the country, I'm happy that Gillispie is in Lubbock. Some in Oklahoma are saying that OU could have had Gillispie, I don't know if Missouri would have been interested in Gillispie, but there are a handful of good programs that Gillispie could have gone (NC State, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Missouri are off the top of my head). And if I was hiring a basketball coach, I'd take a look at my law school alma mater, Tulsa's Doug Wojcik.
And if you want to read stories on yesterday's press conference then feel free to check out LAJ's Courtney Linehan (warning, video auto-player) and DT's Tommy Magelssen.
One more thing (hat-tip @AaronDickens), the recruiting class that former head coach Pat Knight signed has three All-State players, including PG Kevin Wagner (3A), SG Toddrick Gotcher (5A) and SF Terran Petteway (4A). I don't think that Gillispie was lying when he said that PK didn't leave the cupboard empty.
TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL
|
| SPORTS BY BROOKS VS. TUBERVILLE |
Where to start . . . Yesterday Sports By Brooks posted on his Facebook page quit a few items (hat-tip to CRV for the FanShot) where Brooks essentially stated that Texas Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville is "miserable" at Texas Tech and wishes he had never taken the job. After practice yesterday, Tuberville responded, thank you DMN's Mike Graham and DT's the quotes and KCBD's sportstacular Pete Christy for the video:
"This is a great place," Tuberville said. "We're going to build something here that people here can be proud of. That's coming from a lot of people that probably hope we would pack up and leave. But we're looking forward to it. It's going to be a tough challenge the next couple of years getting it where we want to get it to but I would imagine that's coming from across the river somewhere. They would hope I go somewhere else."
I'll be honest, my first reaction to reading SBB's comments, which by the way, he was spot-on with the Billy Clyde Gillispie hiring (as were a lot of reporters) and slightly ahead of just about everyone on news, was that if Tuberville is unhappy then it's not evident to me. He's working awfully hard for a guy that allegedly hates being in Texas Tech. The 2011 recruiting class doesn't happen without hard work, the money raised by Tuberville himself for the new turf on the practice field, instigating the possibility of an indoor facility (it wouldn't surprise me if he is told he's got to go out and raise this money), a new and reorganized weight room, etc. I'm sure there are other examples, but if Tuberville is unhappy he sure is trying to make the program better.
If you're asking me how to take this bit of information, take it just like everything else that you read. Grain of salt. My words, Brooks' words, anyone's words. Sometimes it's just good to take a bit of information and file it away.
| PRACTICE NOTES |
Football practice is back, but only for a week. LAJ's Don Williams writes about the defensive tackle position, and how that despite a spring to settle things, it's still wide open:
"We’ve got to step up," defensive tackle Kerry Hyder said Wednesday. "We watched Colby. We learned a lot from him. Now it’s our time to step up and take over what he left us."
Tech doesn’t return a full-time starter at either nose tackle or defensive tackle for 2011, so one of Tech coaches’ tasks during spring practice has been sorting through their several options with limited experience. Among the returning tackles, Donald Langley made six starts last year, Pearlie Graves four, Hyder three and Chris Perry one.
There are also quotes from DT Chris Perry, who acknowledges that he hasn't lived up to expectations and Tuberville talks about some of the players:
"Rumph is really playing well," Tuberville said. "I think he’s probably made a lot of headway the last few weeks. We’ve moved him from 3-technique (defensive tackle) to noseguard some. Kerry Hyder continues to improve. Obviously, with the depth we’ve got coming in, a couple of JC players, I think that’s going to help, not just inside, but outside."
Williams also has a football notebook, where he details the fact that QB Seth Doege had an incredibly hot-hand in yesterday's practice including some play-by-play:
During a five-play stretch when the Red Raiders were working on red-zone offense, Doege threaded the needle with an 8-yard TD strike to Alex Torres, hit Tramain Swindall deep middle for a 25-yard score and threw up a 25-yarder in the end zone that 6-foot-4 split end Marcus Kennard went up and pulled down over 5-9 cornerback Jeremy Reynolds.
Sandwiched in between was a 23-yard run by Aaron Crawford that Crawford followed up with a 2-yard TD.
A few minutes later, Doege ended the day throwing a 57-yard touchdown to Swindall, who ran free behind a busted coverage.
"I felt like it was a good day," Doege said. "I felt like I had some bad plays, but overall I felt pretty good about the day."
And perhaps the best news of the day is that CB Derrick Mays returned to practice.
"I feel pretty good about the spring," Doege said. "I have a lot to work on, and I’m going to work on it. As soon as spring’s over, there’s some little things that I need to work on to make me a better player. I just want to keep coming out here and getting better every day that I can and finish off in the spring game. Just work on from there, and through the summer, to be ready for game one."
Snip.
"It’s a quarterback competition; there’s no quarterback controversy, there’s no anything like that," Karam said. "We both want to win as many games as possible next year, and we’re teammates first and foremost, and he’s a tremendous quarterback, a tremendous player and a great leader. We push each other. Like I said, there’s no controversy; we’re both out here to bring Texas Tech to a Big 12 Championship, and whichever way we can do that, that’s what we want."
And everyone's favorite blogger, ESPN's David Ubben (is it wrong if I'm enjoying Ubbens' work more in the offseason?) spent some time in Lubbock with head coach Tuberville and Tubs showed Ubben drawings for a possible indoor facility. I'll say it again, if Tuberville can raise the money to have that sucker built and not take away any funds designated for any Dan Law Field renovation, then I'm all for it.
TEXAS TECH BASEBALL
|
| NEBRASKA SERIES |
The hated and despised Cornhuskers come to to town and LAJ's George Watson previews the Huskers:
"The last two years have not been good for us," ninth-year Nebraska coach Mike Anderson said. "We want to create a (positive) reputation in the Big 12 and nationally. I think that’s important. Looking at the long range we hope to finish up strong in the Big 12 and get into the Big Ten strong."
The Huskers of 2011 are well on their way toward reversing their recent fortune, even though they’ve yet to play a conference opponent. They’ve compiled a 16-7 record that includes an impressive series victory against UCLA, last year’s national runner-up.
Also wanted to give a shout-out to freshman OF Andre Wheeler who was named CollegeBaseball360.com Primetime Performers list for this past week's performance. Congrats Andre!

Gionet
and I were friends while we were at Texas Tech. He is a great, great guy. Gionet was the guy that had to guard Tony Battie, Darvin Ham and Jason Sasser everyday in practice. As a player he was a hard nosed, no nonsense interior player. (Lord knows we need more of those type of guys).
I remember we were playing at the Rec center one time with my little brother, who was a high school basketball star at the time. Gionet showed my brother no mercy, and put him on his butt on virtually every play. I haven’t been able to keep up with him over the past several years, but I am not surprised in the least by his success or his commitment to young people.
I love that we have a coach in Gillispie whose West Texas roots run deep.
I am an absolute fan, and could not be more excited for our basketball program.

Step Aside Tubby, Bill G is here;
Looks like Tubby had his feeling hurt yesterday with the announcement of Billy G coming to Raider Country. Does not suprise me one bit that Tubby put it out there to take away from Billy G day. Get over it Tubby, you cry baby.
What a spoiled little brat. Coach, why don’t you work on the on side kick this spring, and learn how to coach team defense, then we will have a special day just for you. What an embarassment.
Way to go Billy G, Tech is going to fun and relevant again, but on the basketball court and not on the football field where 20 running backs will be playing on kick off returns with the number one defense in country.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
yikes!
a little harsh don’t you think? we don’t know for sure if this is something that coach said. his source was facebook, the most reliably source in the world…..

BTECH is known to be harsh, but a true believer.
Football coaches are kown to be a little spoiled, I just think it is funny that Tubby could not keep it in his pants and let Billy G have his day.
I for one, think it is true. I don’t think Tubby likes it here very much. Have you ever heared of anyone who complains about the weather as much as Tubby does. I know his motive is an indoor facility, but come on man. Just build and do a better job coaching special teams, and we need more running backs.

I don’t understand why you are so upset. Is it the idea that he wants an indoor facility? If it takes away from Dan Law renovations then I will be upset too, but an indoor facility would be an addition that could help the program long after he is gone.

I too think an indoor facility would be a great addition to our football program.
Stop complaining about the weather and just go build it. Weather is a part of football. Last time I checked, unless there is ligtining, the game is played with out interruption. Can’t wait when we have a mini hurricane at the Jones and Tubby cancels the game. Then where is the home field advantage if we don’t even practive in bad weather.
I am not upset, I am just making the point that how ironic that Tubby leaks to the media that he is unhappy at Tech the same day and or week that Billy G comes to town. Surely, that can’t help recruiting for 2012. And don’t you think it’s odd that Tubby would even address the issue. He didn’t say anything when the rumors were flying that he might take the Miami job. Just file this one away for later. Just saying.
Otherwise, Seth, having a great day.

I guess this is where our assumptions of why the SBB stuff is leaked. SBB is a huge proponent of BCG and I think he knows BCG from his days at Tulsa. I find it odd that SBB came out with this yesterday and I have a feeling that the timing of it was not a coincidence, however, SBB may have some sort of motivation to write those things that we are just not aware of. And from what I can tell, Tuberville could have said no comment, but wouldn’t that have been worse. I prefer that Tuberville deny those allegations, make fun of bloggers and talk about his favorite subject . . . the weather.

Yes indeed, bloggers and the weather.
I too prefer that he denied those allegations, but he is inconistent. I am always reading between the lines. He had no comment about the Miami job, which did not give me any comfort, but he denies the rumors that he is unhappy at Tech. One foot in, and one foot out. Just makes me anxious and nervous. I am almost ready to start spelling his name right.

I get what you and BTech are saying, which is that football is an outdoor sport (mostly) and it’s to be played outdoors. With that being said, 50 mph winds isn’t conducive to getting much done and although the statements that if he doesn’t want to practice in 50 mph wind, then he’ll cancel games. But there are reasons not to practice in high winds, it can be dangerous, just ask the family of the Notre Dame student-assistant that was killed as he was filming football practice. I’m sure his family and the team and the coaches wished that this practice had been moved indoors somewhere. Granted, this is an extreme case, and the only time I’ve ever heard of someone getting injured or killed while filming practice, but it’s something to consider.

I see no relationship between BCG’s press conference and Tubs’ comments.
None whatsoever.
Actually, I find Tubs’ weather comments to be hilarious.
He’s either incredibly obsessed with the topic of weather (he is an avid golfer afterall); or he is lobbying hard for an indoor facility (we very well could be witnessing a concerted effort to prod reluctant GOB’s to open their wallets).
In either case, his comments and approach are pretty damn funny.

I think most people talk about the weather especially when your outside. The elements do play a factor in practice so why not mention it. The point you make is probably spot on about him lobbying for an indoor facility. Of all places, Tech should have one.

BCG transcript
I haven’t had time to watch the video (surely it’s around somewhere by now) but if you take the transcript at face value, he seems to be a mess.
That being said , his style just seems to be that way, and having heard him speak on the W&H podcast, I think there are nuances lost in the text. I’ll have to review that.
As far as Hocutt: He sounds aggressive! No disappointment there. He’s kinda growing on me some more.
Previously posted but it might help others see the video
I posted this last night on the "Red Raider Hoops | Billy Gillispie Makes it Official to Texas Tech" posting.
So just in case others are still having issues watching the full press conference this might help.
On my PC, the small video window on the home page of the Texas Tech Athletics (Featured Video) does have the horrible skipping and jumping.
But the one tied to the story worked great for me. (Full Press Conference)

Excellent, thanks!
The first link works well – I figured they would have it.
Just now sitting down to get into it.
On further review,
I don’t think the Leach comparisons will end anytime soon.
It’s gonna be annoying, but I think the point is partially valid, anyway.
Sheep? Really? Aww, hell. Hopefully it’s all just crazy enough to work- At least we’ve been here before.
The majority of my thoughts however weren’t on BCG:
Did grow more impressed with Hocutt today. I am still not totally sold on him, but I am impressed so far. He’s not just on top of things but all over them like a lion on a zebra. This is both necessary right now, and good. He’s selling (the athletic program and the university) hard, but tastefully. Also notice he had his guns up at the end and BCG had to think about it.
And note to the event staff – take the lectern to the maintenance shop to get the peeling paint refinished the week BEFORE you have a press conference, and see that it isn’t damaged in the interim. Haul someone in for a quick touch up if need be, but don’t just ignore the problem. EVERYBODY sees that kind of stuff.
Otherwise, technically, the conference was produced very well. We had good audio and no one fumbled the camera. Perhaps they are getting tired of looking incompetent. Fair enough.
I noticed the horrible shape the lectern/podium was in too
.
I agree get it fixed.
It was distracting especially when BCG was listening to a question and not actually talking

NUTS - Never Underestimate TEAM Strength
Ancedotal story
Having been part of an emergency lectern refinishing session, I know it can be done cheap, and quick and look completely flawless in about an hour.
Back in the day when I did this sort of thing, some VIP once showed up with their OWN lectern because they were short, and refused ours. ( He was an internationally known guy.)
Naturally the thing looked like it had been to war several times, and the covert mission to “kidnap” the lectern was itself a cloak and dagger ordeal, but I wasn’t part of that segment of it.
We had to dig up every OTHER lectern on the facility and drive them around in the back of maintenance trucks so when the VIP asked where it went (and he did) nearly anyone could point out they had just seen it – or “oh look, it’s passing by right now.” (we were under clear instructions to beep and wave casually at everyone we saw on the grounds, but not to stop.)
The VIP’s personal event staff and security were frantically looking in all the places one would take a lectern to refinish it, because we had made the suggestion previously and it greatly upset him. They really turned the place inside out.
Which is why we used the woman’s bathroom in the cafeteria for the job. Our bosses boss (the big cheeze, and she was LARGE, but she ordered this “mission”) was even guarding the nook by the door partially undressed and pretending to examine herself for a rash or something. It was complete insanity punctuated by frantic action and great secrecy. The good ventilation kept the smell from being obvious and the hot-air hand dryers got the new finish dry with not a moment to spare.
The VIP was upset, but at least the place he was speaking at didn’t look foolish on national TV. (Video on the internet was uncommon back then.) The lectern, for what it’s worth, looked great.
The boss bought us lunch every Friday for a month for pulling it off.
It took about $10 bucks in paint/finish, 3 sheets of sandpaper, and 12 guys who should have been too dumb to get away with it.
I guess you can say this is why I noticed it.
Fortunately, I have never been a part of such surface restoration shenanigans since. Once was enough, so getting it right the first time is largely favorable.
LOL --- Thanks for the story. It made my day
.
I can see the images you described.
A very intriguing and funny story.
When I was noticing the lectern yesterday, I was envisioning a SNL skit with a lectern held together with duct tape and the Texas Tech Seal sideways and barely hanging on. CTT and BCG standing there with tumbleweeds blowing past them and CTT talking about the wind. BCG talking about the inappropriate things he has said about his ex-wife in public forums. Hocutt standing there beating off someone that would fit perfectly in the movie "The Birdcage".
It is the little details that make a difference and the Tech lectern needs to be restored. Especially in this day and age of videos and media being passed around the WWW. Please do not make Tech look like we can’t afford a new or restored lectern.
R289 … Thanks again for the laugh and the story.

The thought strikes me
That tech must have half a dozen or so likely to be used in a press conference in various buildings around campus.
Perhaps the saddle tramps could be responsible for protecting/maintaining them? They seem to do okay with a statue…
Winning, the winning style.
Is that regular winning or Charlie Sheen winning? Kidding! I am very excited to have a fantastic coach like BCG and look forward to what he brings to Tech’s basketball program.

In defence of Tubs. (did I just say that?)
Even though his denial could have been taken as a weak one-
I have overheard people talking about this rumor locally more than once and am surprised at the roundabout way it has surfaced in the media.
The story goes that it is not really Tubs who is particularly unhappy, but that people close to him aren’t happy and felt entitled to more goodwill (than he has been able to earn so far).
The second part of this, from what I understand, are the same coastal elites he is close with (that he was slamming in his "denial) because the elites think he is too good to stoop to being anywhere in the state of Texas. This part of the rumor seems valid to me. it seems he has some coastal elites among his inner circle who despise Texas and all it stands for. They might be leaning on him to get out and go somewhere else.
The third part of this- is that he is close with some people who are more negative about him being here than he is, and they are very much wrapped up in dwelling on said negativity, more-so than Tubs himself.
When mama ain’t happy…
In further defense of Tubs....
And I have no idea whether this rumor has any meat in it or not. But, at least in regard to whether or not he was entitled to more good will – maybe he was and maybe he wasn’t. But I tend to think he deserved a little better overall reception that he got. I have seen a lot of coaching changes in my time, and while they are all unique in their given circumstances, they are all also similar in many ways. I personally think that Tubs received a much harsher reception than average and believe that it was for things that had nothing to do with Tubs himself. The guy has yet to prove himself, and I can only be hopeful to that end – but he was a dead man walking for an unusually large amount of people before he said his first words as Tech’s head coach. I always admit openly that I loved Leach and that I think he got a raw deal – but I know that Tubs had nothing to do with that. I also believe that a lot others who loved Leach have misplaced their anger over how all that went down on Tubs shoulders. To my point – it would not surprise me at all if how that showed itself in his reception caught he and his wife off guard. There was no way I’d have seen that coming either if I were him. I think it was LondonRaider that posted the stats that show the high unlikelihood of taking over a winning program and having any success at all. Tubs beat the averages anyway you slice it last year and still doesn’t get a whiff of a break from a lot of Tech fans. Would it really be that big of a surprise to find out this pisses him off a little?
On a side note – if the admin really is behaving that badly with him and he now clearly understands what he tied himself to – I could also see him not being happy here because of that, and also appreciate his publicly poking them with a stick.
Indoor facility
During my time in LBK, Tech built the baby bubble just south of the Jones as an indoor multi-purpose facility (fb, bball, and track). Is it that outdated or impractical for fb, or is HCTT looking to put this new desired facility in as a part of his legacy? If he wants a full size facility, we are looking at least 3-4 years down the road.
by 2 CENTS on Mar 24, 2011 9:33 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
It’s really not efficient for football practice. The length will only support a 50 yard field and from what I’m told the place lacks ample air conditioned space. The bubble is great for some of the other sports but not so much for football. A good indoor facility can be errected fairly quickly but it’s probably more about raising the money.
"You've got to find your inner pirate" - Mike Leach
"We started too late" - Neal Brown
Indoor Facility
You can build that building in less than a year, easy. The hard part, like most building projects, would be raising the money and dealing with the politics. What more important facilities TTU needs before we have a nice indoor facility being a major battle to some. So yep, its gonna be a while before we can build that facility.
