ODDS AND ENDS
|
| BACK IN THE SADDLE |
Never really realized how much traveling can take out of a person. Flight was delayed and didn't get into bed until 3:45 a.m. yesterday morning and had an 8:00 a.m. appointment. I worked until 2:00 p.m. yesterday and then went home and slept until I woke up for dinner and I was pretty much back to my normal self. The trip itself was good, I'll have to tell you about it some time when we're not so busy.
I've also had to just throw everything together because there's just so much out there. I know we have things to do, but just give me a few days to get around to everything.
TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL
|
| SPRING GAME AND COMMITS |
We're going to get with some Red Black Spring Game links. I'd love to link to everything, but I'm just going to be short of time.
OFFICIAL SITE | Doege Paces Texas Tech In Annual Spring Game (Photos, official stats and video)
LAJ | Tech notes: Swindall switch clicking | Glasgow nurturing Tech’s defense through infancy and beyond | Doege strengthens bid to become Tech’s QB with strong spring game
DT | Passing, running games shine in spring game | Tech shows off new offensive formations | YouTube: Tech participates in annual Spring Game | Spring game not as important as it may appear
I think that's it, at least for the traditional media markets. I did see a review from the National Football Post's Dave Miller and ESPN's David Ubben. I don't know that these are any better than anything linked above, but they're there.
It was also apparent that it was a busy weekend for commits. There are a couple of things to note, the first being that from what I could tell, there were four 2012 commits and one 2011 commit. The second thing to mention is that Okafor committed back in January, which is why he wasn't mentioned. I just haven't had time to prepare any sort of write-up.
2012 COMMITS
WR Reginald Davis (6-1/185) | Rivals | Scout | ESPN
LB Erick Hallmon (6-1/190) | Rivals | Scout | ESPN
QB Clayton Nicholas (6-3/205) | Rivals | Scout | ESPN
OL Christian Okafor (6-6/300) | Rivals | Scout | ESPN
ATH Keenon Ward (5-9/176) | Rivals | Scout | ESPN
2011 COMMIT
DB Thierry Nguema (6-0/175) | Rivals | Scout | ESPN
LAJ's Don Williams has a bit about Nguema, who should be here this fall, and also talks with Okafor being a firm commitment (grain of salt) to Texas Tech and LAJ's Williams also has a bit on the four commits from this past weekend, including a bit on Abilene Cooper's Clayton Nicholas from his coach:
"It’s just the way it comes out of his hand — he’s got a great release," Spradlin said. "And he’s got all the intangibles. Boy, he’s savvy and smart. He only threw seven interceptions in 13 games, and four of those were late in the half, not late in games. He just has a great presence about him."
Snyder's Keenon Ward from his coach:
"He’s an outstanding athlete," Snyder coach Chad Rogers said. "He’s got great lateral movement and very, very good speed. He threw the ball well for us. He has a real quick release and a real strong arm. He makes great grades, too, so he’s an all-around (prospect)."
Tenaha's Reginald Davis from his coach:
"Probably on our level the biggest difference between him and most of the guys he plays against is his speed," Terry Ward said. "He has a knack for getting to the football and making big plays. He’s hard to tackle when he wants to be. I think his biggest asset in college will be his size, his ability to jump and catch the football and his ability to make plays after he catches it."
And Cardinal Gibbon's Erick Hallmon:
Hallmon said Tech coaches gave him the impression he’d play strong safety if he stays about the same size or he could move to linebacker if he gets much bigger. Cardinal Gibbons offensive coordinator Matt DuBuc, who played at Tech, described Hallmon as "a speed guy who comes off the edge pretty well."
There are also local stories on Nicholas and Hallmon.
TEXAS TECH BASKETBALL
COMMITS
Texas Tech's newest basketball coach, Billy Gillispie, was busy, adding some height to the team with two commitments, both are from Tyler JC:
2011 COMMIT
SF Jaron Nash (6-7/175) | Rivals | Scout | ESPN
C Kade Tapsoda (6-10/200) | Rivals
LAJ's Courtney Linehan has a bit on Nash and Tapsoda from their head coach, Mike Marquis:
"He’s a long, athletic guy who’s a more perimeter-oriented Quincy Acy type of player," said Marquis, comparing Nash to the former Baylor Bear. "He handles the ball well."
Snip.
Marquis said Tapsoba improved more in two years than any other athlete he’s worked with. But the sophomore center knows that at 200 pounds he’ll need to keep growing if he wants to remain a competitive shot blocker when he moves to Division I basketball.
LAJ's Linehan also has a bit about Gillispie not rushing into hiring his staff, and to remind everyone, Gillispie did hire former Red Raider, Bryant Moore.
TEXAS TECH BASEBALL
RED RAIDERS WIN 2ND SERIES
I've got very little time left, but wanted to mention that the Red Raiders won their second series to open the season. The official site, LAJ's George Williams and DT's Jose Rodriguez all have stories on the third game and series-clinching win.
Also, Jamodrick McGruder was named the Big 12's Player of the Week:
Jamodrick McGruder, Texas Tech, So., 2B, 5-7, 155, Mesquite, Texas (Lubbock Coronado)
McGruder hit .500 (7-for-14) with three extra-base hits, a .650 on-base percentage and a .786 slugging percentage. The sophomore finished the week reaching base safely in 9-of-11 plate appearances. In TTU's series victory against Nebraska, he went 5-for-9, going 3-for-4 in Saturday's contest with a triple, RBI and two walks. The Red Raiders have now won back-to-back series to open Big 12 play for the first time since 1999. He began the week going 2-for-5 with three RBI, a double and a run scored against Dallas Baptist while leading Tech to a come-from-behind win at Patriot Field. The Mesquite, Texas, native ranks fifth in the league with a .389 batting average and 35 hits.
Congrats to Jamodrick!

Yes, saw a FanShot this morning and didn’t have any additional information from a quick search this morning, couldn’t find anything else than SBB.
Go Raiders . . .

Key word is "lubbock"
not a word mentioned about it in AJ or redraiders.com…….all over ther rest of the world….as expected.
"As we continue to merely "talk about championships""
I don't believe anything that Sports by Brooks says or reports
Or atleast take it with a grain of salt. Because most of his sources seem to be questionable and often wrong. His sources always appear to be these ‘insiders’ that nobody knows or hears of. I think SBB has become a blogger gone wild. So, I would wait till more legitimate sources publish this information.
That Bryant Gumbel guy, he's off the reservation too.

Dude...
you can have your own opinion, but my guess is you never followed a damn thing about this guy before a few weeks ago. Forming your own opinion first hand over time is highly recommended.
If you have read a lot of SBB and come to this conclusion, my apologies….

This doesn't prove that the players in question were not paid...
it doesn’t even prove that the kids who said they were liars weren’t paid.
What could these kids possibly have to gain by saying that they accepted money to play football?
Fun and revege
3 of the four were thrown out of the team. 2 because of crime and 1 sued the university ala Nancy (aka AJ).
As I said....
you have sources on both sides….and if you don’t have a gut feeling that something is up at auburn, perhaps you don’t want to see it. I’m just not going to bash sbb, I like having news outside of espn and find him more credible than most on that network. Panties unwadded about him saying tubs was unhappy at tech because it’s good to get a perspective other than those in the inner circle in Lubbock.
The guy had pk pegged months ago and that already makes him more accurate than any meteorologist.

Hallmon
I was curious when we recruited a 6-1, 190 LB… the move to SS makes sense. I’m excited about the other guys. Esp. Okafor… he looks like the caliber of lineman that we used to see more of.
BBall Recruits
Glad they’re tall, but they’re a couple of string beans. Let’s put some meat on those boys.
Confused
about a few things. We went and got a two-or three star DB from CA because we had 1 scholarship from 2011. Who did not make grades or changed their minds? Why didn’t we save that for Delvon Simmons? Or do you think we will have one more free IF Delvon decides to come our way? (Not sure he has been released from UNC). Also, the only stories I see about coach Moore is that he was hired by Pepperdine this month. So BCG hire him immediately after he accepted a job at Pepperdine?
Or Otis Wright and/or Javess Blue and/or someone else won’t qualify. We knew that these two were risks, but maybe Wright and Blue won’t qualify, which would make sense as Nguema seems to be a similar position.

Yeppo, they seem to have taken a different route....I am happy we got to talk about them and to see that they were interested in TTU.

The topic is NCAA college women’s basketball.
Did anyone else notice that A&M destroyed Baylor and more importantly, Brittney Griner?
First Texas Tech got some payback this year by beating Baylor. Now A&M knocked out the supposed #1 Baylor team and moves on to the final 4.
I have to think Jordan Barncastle got a chuckle out of that.
"it may look like zombies destroyed it, but that's actually just Garland"
I messed up and failed to record that game, I was pulling for TAMU in this one.
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
I think all of the Lady Raiders were laughing
I was glad that ATM beat Baylor.
Griner will not have her NC title and neither will Coach Mulkey.
I figured it would happen. Mulkey had a team of one and Griner’s legs finally got tired.
I too was pulling for the Aggies on this one. I like the HC Gary Blair he runs a clean program and he comes across in his demeanor and actions as a positive person.

I have to disagree with the LAJ
Scotty Young showed much more promise to me than Doege. Young went 8 out of 10 for 112 yds, (14 yd average) , TWO TD strikes, a 66 yarder, ZERO interceptions and ZERO sacks and ZERO balls batted down.
"As we continue to merely "talk about championships""
he wasn't running against the 1's, though.

Which site
should one go to if they don’t just want to agree with every coaching move? Blackbeard was a Potts supporter and if his eyes see something different with young versus doege…how about asking more about why instead of trying to label him?

I have zero interest in getting into a pissing contest with anyone over something as ephemeral as college QB power-ranking
but by the same token I’m not going to be intimidated by half-assed appeals to authority. The only thing I addressed to blackbeard was the fact that Young put his scrimmage numbers up against players who occupy equivalent positions on the depth chart to him.
by mojavereject on Mar 30, 2011 11:28 PM CDT up reply actions
Well since you addressed your response to Blackbeard, it is only appropriate that Blackbeard responds
I see very little difference between D1 and D2 at the jones other than Smith at DE. Both D’s have deceptive speed……they are slower than they look. Neither has any linebackers of note. That being said, the difference I see between Doege and Young is that Young has a much higher release poin and much more speed on the delivery. He also has a much stronger arm. Many of the passes I saw Doege make were rainbows to the sidelines rather than a zip to the outside. As I stated earlier, Doege has several balls batted down at the line. Yes, we can also criticize the line for that, but the QB is ultimately responsible.
Now if you are calling me out as “half-assed”….that is best suited for another place and another time….anytime.
"As we continue to merely "talk about championships""
I don't disagree that Young has a better athletic upside, but arguably so does Karm. Or Brewer.
but putting a redshirt freshman in the starting role with a questionable defense backing him up is a recipe for overwhelmed and ineffectual. There is a pretty clear formula for getting successful performances out freshman QBs with lots of physical tools, but it’s closer to “Give them manageable situations in which they are likely to succeed”, than “Here’s the rock, we like to average around 40 every game”
by mojavereject on Mar 31, 2011 12:09 PM CDT up reply actions
We can always use the 2010 Aggies Template
If Doege is 3-3 as a starter by mid-season we switch to Young & win out for a 9-3 season. I’ll take that. Then Young will have 7 games experience heading into 2012.
You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows
You certainly
did appear to want to get into a pissing match because someone had an opinion other than if doege is anointed. You called him out, and his ‘kooky’ ideas. My suggestion was to listen to his reasoning before dismissing outright…but I am a radical.

This doesn’t seem like a fair assessment from the exchange above. Just seemed like mojave pointed out that it wasn’t against the 1’s and I think that mojave’s general point is that a lot of fans love to anoint the next quarterback. blackbeard and battledome initially didn’t supply any reasoning, just opinions, and I think mojave was asking for some reasons. I’ll also say that I’m expecting that people will being saying that Clayton Nicholas should start all four years and are better than everyone currently on the roster by next week. The grass is always greener.
Go Raiders . . .

I saw
A general statement made due to an opinion given by Blackbeard who has seen doege more than just the one start referenced. BB also now thinks he saw an ol starter outplayed by a backup…..let’s get a rope. If I thought it was odd or kooky I would engage him in why he thought that….not making a general statement about backup qb lovers. I have gained perspective by having dialogue with dtn’ers about topics. Btech taught me a lot about the competitive dance team at tech.

QBs
Doege had a really good game once they all got over the early mistakes. Noene of the rest of the QBs could really be compared, but, yea, Young had a very effective session. Unless something causes a change, though, the coaches appear to be ready to have Doege as the starter with Karem ready to come in next. Young will be No. 3. Brewer will red-shirt or be scout team fodder. Even if we do lose Doege, there is still enough talent to shore the position up. I have no real concerns for the QB slot. A couple of years from now, Nicholas could be a strong contender for the QB slot. But even he may have to wait as the remaining guys will have enough time in that they will hold the top spots down. Enjoy this everyone. We have never had this many high-quality QBs on the roster at the same time, and it looks like it will continue for at least the next six years. It sure would be nice to say the same for every other position on the roster, which is where I think Tubs is trying to get the team. If you go online and look at all of the prospects for 2012 I think you will se that Tech could really get super tough if they can snatch up some of that top talent early on and keep them. As long as no “bills” exchange hands we should be sitting nicely for a while.
