What are the thoughts on Tuberville & the Auburn situation?
Will he getted dragged into it by the media and an NCAA investigation regardless?
I honestly don’t know enough about it…interested in other folks thoughts.

I really don’t think he’ll be implicated. At least I hope not…of course, if he is, what happened at Auburn doesn’t necessarily mean it will happen here. Different culture down there and it may have been bigger than him to stop – which is what I think will end up coming out of it. I know we have invovled boosters, but nothing like at Auburn.
The main thing I’m wondering is that if any or all of this is true, will Tuberville have any accountability as head coach? He could say he didn’t know it was going on and that could be true. But with the allegation of an asst coach handing out money it makes him look complicit or not in charge of his program.
I don’t think any of this would go on at Tech for a second. But if Tuberville gets caught up in this is the worst he would get is a fine and a tainted reputation?

If I had to guess, the worst Tuberville will get is a “you should have paid more attention.” I’d be willing to lay money down that the FBI and NCAA are going to discover that Bobby Lowder is behind a LOT of this. Why that snake was allowed to stay around Auburn after the last pay-for-play scandal is the real question. I don’t think it will matter though, because the FBI is involved this time, so there’s a decent chance he’ll be seeing jail time. They were already investigating the Cam Newton fiasco, and this probably just gives them reason to expand the investigation.
By the way, I didn’t mean to offend any snakes out there…

Yeah, unless the NCAA has documented proof that he knew,
he’s probably fine. All of these things are cash only, and there is not a lot written communication about what goes on. Would, at best, be a he said-he said situation.
I would think the NCAA has to investigate
If nothing else, there’s a pretty major accusation of the assistant coach handing money to a player. Just can’t leave that out there without resolution, and Tubs would be on the hot seat. Or maybe he is really looking to tell someone where the bodies are buried. Feinbaum said a few times recently that Tubs has his nose in the Cam deal, trying to stoke the fire AGAINST Auburn. (As if that story needs help looking worse). Could give credence to the idea of Tubs as the good guy just out of his league with powerful boosters, and happy to poke the proverbial Tiger. But if things go bad and Auburn takes on serious damage, it wont be surprising if they look for people to take down and scapegoat, with Tubs in clear line of sight.
Aside from the money, there’s the issue of “lackademics” . Not a lot of people care about this, but it’s ugly, if not as serious. This does reflect directly on the head coach.

I tend to think...
a good portion of coaches encounter situations where boosters pass money to players. It would be a very hard thing to control and the best a coach can do is to constantly educate players on the repercussions for accepting money or gifts. I think the line is crossed when a coach or staff member encourages the illegal activity or looks past it. Some boosters tend to think they’re helping a program by passing money and it makes them feel important or possibly a part of the program. Times have changed and more eyes are able to catch this kind of activity especially with today’s technology.

Suspected and parted ways ... ??
It has never been clear of why Tuberville and Auburn parted ways. I am wondering if he found out it was happening or suspected it was going on but could not stop it and wanted to distance himself from it.
The sense of entitlement some of these players have is so outrageous. I guess they don’t consider their scholarships enough, even though it is the equivalent to tens of thousands of dollars others have to pay out of pocket to get their education.

Interesting comment from Wetzel
“The BCS cuts to the very core of what’s wrong with college athletics – the arrogance and entitlement of the people in charge.”
Same coutd be said for Colleges in general and hance in particular.

And this is all you get from me today. Just been too busy.
As an aside, TSK has an update from the HBO special and lots of other things, including street agent Will Lyles asking TAMU for $80,000 for Patrick Peterson. TAMU declined.

Curry
Didn’t she just get a new contract or an extension after the season? I don’t get why she is interviewing for another job if she did.
by ST04 on Mar 31, 2011 9:36 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
Her new contract is not finalized
Therefore, any viable offer will certainly be looked at by her to create every option available. I really can’t fault her for this, plus LSU asked Tech if they could interview her for the job, so it was not kept secret from them, and they obliged. There are some excellent choices available if she does bolt, though. No doubt, she would be leaving the program in a better statusthan she received it, making it much easier for a new coach to continue the improvements already in place.

She’s got some fairly solid competition for the LSU job, so it’s not a given by any stretch she’d leave.
It’s just the nature of college coaching these days. It’s taken me several years to really get my arms around the concept of coaches leaving pretty good situations after 4-5 years, but I am okay with it now. I was furious every off-season when Leach would be linked to openings in years past. I don’t like it, per se, but I accept that the landscape of today is much different than 15 or 20 years ago as far as coaching tenure.
That she has the interview indicates the admiration that she has among college programs.
I have read a lot of comments that she is not good for TTU BB, this takes away from that thought to some degree.
I wonder if she would really do it. That is a fine program, one that is currently loaded with talent…and opportunity for wins.
I hope she continues to build at TTU….unless we can hire, say, Gary Blair.

After all the hype about the story yesterday I was happily disappointed when it turned out to be largely guided at the gen pop middle america crowd.
You know when they lead with “Look at the schools getting rich, we should pay these kids” they even go as far as to say if they had collective bargining the kids would have made 500K-600K per year, I knew they didnt have much of a story.
Then the next segment was about $100 handshakes, big woop as long as Omar Epps isnt lying down in the middle of a busy two lane road at night, I think we are all OK.
Dont buy the Espn/Disney/ABC hype ! Playoffs are just spin to hide their agenda of owning our favorite sport.

Aren't they still negotiating ?
Or did you read something recently that said the contract is signed ?

Will be interesting to see if they punish
Tubberville while he is at Tech. I am also interested in whether Chizik or Muschamp are implicated. They were assistants at Aunurn then
by miketag on Apr 1, 2011 12:40 AM CDT via mobile reply actions
If they punish Tuberville at TTU, they are punishing TTU...that would be dead wrong on their part.
I don’t know that they have authority to do that.
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
I think the statute of limitations would kick in...
for Tuberville, if it came to that. Still, if they decide he was involved, the NCAA will start looking over the Tech program’s shoulder. Remember how they treated Jerry Tarkanian once the NCAA decided it didn’t like him? Granted, he probably WAS a crook, but if the NCAA would have that kind of vigilance at Alabama, Auburn, Ohio State, or anywhere Lane Kiffin coaches, those programs would all be going a different direction.
In this case, I think Tubs needs to stay out of it. The SEC is the favored son of the NCAA. They can’t do anything about the media, but if a coach starts in on that golden boy, their liable to make that coach suffer.
Not that I would suggest the NCAA is corrupt…. wait, never mind, I’m not going to finish that denial, because we ALL know the NCAA is corrupt!
