ODDS AND ENDS

MISCELLANEOUS

There are so many links this morning, its really quite ridiculous.  Perhaps the best DTN DD in the history of ever.  I'm cautiously pleased, but I got up at 4:15 this morning, so mistakes are likely.  Be gentle.

First up, Totally Tech's TTU Red has posted new campus pictures, excellent as always, for those of you that do not live in Lubbock . . . For those of you keeping score, the University of Texas has named two ESPN bigwigs to be Vice Presidents as the fledgling UT Network . . . Former Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach is trying to change legislation, by hiring a lobbying firm, to permit an employee of the state to sue said state employer.   I think this is a longshot by Leach, but I guess we'll see.   There are a ton of comments on the link, which is from Texas Monthly . . .

TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL

POST-PRACTICE THOUGHTS

Another practice yesterday and another post-practice press conference from head coach Tommy Tuberville.  Here's my non-transcript:

Tommy Tuberville | Thought it was a good practice defensively.  Offensively, didn't do a whole lot, protections not good, dropping the ball, running the ball better.  Made a lot of strides defensively, got to tackle better on Saturday, play with more sense of urgencey.  Will turn the defense loose a bit Saturday and allow blitzing a bit more.  It's been a good week, good to have a day off.  Big test on Saturay morning, go about 2 hours.  Go about 120 to 125 plays.  Be a bit cooler on Saturday, need to have a good idea where we're at.  QB Jacob Karam has done better, put him on a team atmosphere, needs to stay in the pocket more.  Saturay it was a toss-up for the best job.  WR Marcus Kennard is coming on a bit, WR Darrin Moore is getting better learning the offense.  Counting those guys.  IR Austin Zouzalik is beat up, looking more like himself.  IR Alexander Torres is going through most of practice, just not a lot of contact.  WR Derek Edwards is getting better, must have a better sense of urgency.  RB Ben McRoy got banged up a bit, not a concussion, more fuzziness, but wanted him all the way healthy.  Want more plays out of RB Eric Stephens, Torres will be in a blue jersey, S Cody Davis will be in a blue jersey.  RB Aaron Crawford, had deviated septum surgery over the holidays.  He's getting better, next 6 months will be big for him.  The big thing about Lubbock, there are a bunch of Boys and Girls Club events that he can go to and it's important that the coaches and players go out to these events.

LAJ's Don Williams writes about S Terrance Bullitt and his transition to strong safety:

In new defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow’s scheme, the strong safety usually lines up within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage, sometimes right on the line. Often, he chucks a slot receiver, then covers out into the short zones.

Those responsibilities are new to Bullitt.

"It’s completely different," he said. "Last year, it was more dropping back deep. This year, I’m more rolled down.

"I like it. It’s the same position my brother (NFL safety Melvin Bullitt) played at A&M, so he kind of helped me out a little bit."

And Williams provides a hint at the safety depth chart:

The Red Raiders need Bullitt to make a smooth transition to strong safety, because the guys behind him are less experienced than the personnel slotted at the other safety spots. Two experienced players — Cody Davis and Brett Dewhurst — are lining up at weak safety. Two of the team’s top six tacklers last season — D.J. Johnson and Tre Porter — are at free safety.

Behind Bullitt, senior transfer Giorgio Durham, junior Arlan Waller and redshirt freshmen Desmond Martin, Russell Polk and Don Hursey have all gotten looks at strong safety. Martin and Waller got the second-team snaps during Thursday’s 11-on-11 team period.

Good stuff, go read the whole thing.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL IS A MESS

This is a few days old, but wanted to link to it anyway.  SI.com had this huge expose about the how college football players had too many criminals on their football teams.  The problem with this, as EDSBS's Spencer Hall wrote and appropriately linked, is that SI.com's evidence and statistics aren't all that impressive, especially when you take into consideration the general public:

Of those seven percent, "nearly 60 percent…were guilty or paid some penalty". If we assume "nearly 60 percent" means 57% (shockingly, the actual numbers and survey methods aren’t given), then 4% of players on top 25 football teams have been actually convicted of, or plead guilty to, a crime.

The number of average college students with the same criminal record? According to this article from Corvallis, Oregon’s Daily Barometer, 3.45%. That’s right: Your typical college football player is one-half of one percent more likely to have a criminal conviction. To put that in perspective, a team of 85 players has half a person more convicted criminals on it than a sample of 85 students drawn randomly. Hide yo kids, hide yo wife.

So in retrospect, SI.com saying that they're going to blow the roof off of college football isn't all that great . . . then on Wednesday, there were tapes that were released that were allegedly Cecil Newton with Cam Newton in the background asking for the payment.  There are folks who believe that these tapes are fake, and as always, I encourage you to follow the SB Nation storystream as there are continuous updates . . . But to me, the biggest news was the news that broke last night, where Oregon paid a pair of men who had multiple contacts to a number of recruits over $28,000 (Yahoo! Sports Charles Robinson and ESPN's Joe Schad).  The two men's names are Baron Flenory and Will Lyles.  The funny thing about all of this is that Recruitcosm's Jesus Shuttleworth wrote about  Lyles being a street agent way back in December.  I suppose my point with all of this is that if SI.com really wanted to blow the lid off of college football, I think they'd be exposing this sort of stuff, not the fact that college football players are one-half of one percent more likely to have committed a crime than your average college student . . .

TEXAS TECH BASKETBALL

TRAVELING TO COLLEGE STATION

DT's Tommy Magelssen writes about the Red Raiders final conference game, which will be Texas A&M's senior night, and PG John Roberson is still confident that there is a lot of basketball yet to play:

With high expectations of the Red Raiders coming into the season, Tech has lost a handful of games in the final minute.

"We weren’t really consistent throughout the year with everybody playing each game, and we know that," guard John Roberson said after the win, "but we have a lot of basketball to be played.

"So, I mean, this is a good game for us to just look at how we did this and watch the film, see what we did right and see what we did wrong, and, you know, just let this game help us going into the A&M game and to the Big 12 (Conference) tournament."

I'll have my preview for the game up tomorrow as I'm running a bit late today.

2011 COMMITS DOING WELL

I wanted to give some credit to head coach Pat Knight, who I have criticized and am in favor of letting him go, but I try to be fair (I'm not always successful) and did want to point out that PK has a handful 2011 commitments who are leading their teams to a high school state title.  Up first is Estacado's PG Kevin Wagner, who has the #1 ranked 3A team in the state, and is leading his team in scoring 16.8 points and registers 3.6 assists per game.  Up next is SF Terran Petteway who leads a 32-4 Galveston Ball team in scoring at 19.1 points per game and is second on the team in rebounding.  Petteway's team will face Nederland on Friday night.  SG Toddrick Gotcher is leading his Lakeview Centennial (Garland) team (34-1) is in the third round of the state playoffs, beating Bryan and is second  on the team scoring  (football commit LB Sam Equavoen is also on the team scoring 5.1 PPG).  Last, but not least, I thought I'd throw in another football commit, DE Cooper Washington, who is scoring 12.7 points and 8.5 boards for Muleshoe.

TTU AD: GIVE BILLY GILLISPIE A CHANCE
And to counter that, FWST's Mike Jones opines that Texas Tech's new athletic director Kirby Hocutt should give former Kentucky and TAMU head coach Billy Gillispie a chance:

Those who know of Gillispie's inner fire will find that statement interesting. And here's the background to his not-the-end-of-the-world conclusion.

He hates mention of it, but Gillispie has become immersed in helping people. In addition to things he's done privately, he's formed an active volunteer relationship with Big Brothers and Big Sisters. He said if he does re-enter coaching, that he will become even more involved with those organizations.

"I really do want to coach," he said. "But I do have some other things going for me for probably the first time in my life. For the first time, I can perceive myself doing something else that would really be a good fit.

"I don't know where it's all going to lead. But I know the future will be good either in basketball or something else, because I know I have something to give. And that my heart is in the right place."

If I'm the new AD at Tech, I read that and consider that Gillispie's teams win, his players graduate and he's never had an NCAA rules problem, and I think this is a guy I at least want to talk to.

You make the call.

I have no idea of Gillispie is a changed man, and only one school is going to get the opportunity to find out . . . Yahoo! Sports' Jason King has his All Big 12 team and not one mention of a Red Raider . . .

*Click on the score for boxscore. Texas Tech series preview (pdf).

I'm running a bit behind on the baseball team.  The Red Raiders now stand 8-2, after splitting the UNLV Rebels series, winning the first game, but losing the second game, 4-3 (official site boxscore, quotes, video and notes) and here's DT's Jose Rodriguez's game story.

Now, Texas Tech will take on nationally ranked, #8 in the nation, TCU Horned Frogs.  LAJ's George Watson previews the series and writes that the UNLV loss is a bad sign going into this weekend series:

But by holding the Red Raiders (8-2) scoreless in the first inning for only the second time in 10 games this season, then jumping out with the big inning early in the game, it prevented the Red Raiders from playing their running, execution-style offense.

"We basically just ran out of chances," Spencer said. "The game got away from us and the next thing you know we’re in the sixth and it changes way we want to play, but we didn’t have a ton of opportunities.

The loss takes away the momentum from three straight wins, but apparently not the Red Raiders’ confidence.

"I think today maybe we pressed a little bit or weren’t too focused, or we rushed, I don’t know what happened," Barnes said. "We didn’t come out offensively as we usually do. We want to win every day we come out on the field, so losing is disappointing, but we’re looking forward to Friday coming out and playing nine innings and coming out with a victory."

And DT's Rodriguez writes about TCU's fantastic pitcher, Matt Purke.  And for those of you in Lubbock, if you want to see maybe the #1 draft pick in this year's MLB amatuer draft, go see Purke:

To make matters worse, the TCU pitching rotation is regarded as one of the best in the country, led by a former first-round pick of the Texas Rangers, sophomore Matt Purke.

Purke was drafted No. 14 overall by the Rangers coming out of high school and was honored as consensus National Freshman of the Year after earning a school-record 16 wins and recording 142 strikeouts.

Purke is scheduled to pitch Sunday.

The Red Raiders’ first obstacle is junior Kyle Winkler, who finished 2010 with a 12-3 record as a starter with a 3.39 ERA.

Saturday’s TCU starter, Steven Maxwell, may be overlooked considering the hype surrounding Purke. Maxwell led the staff with a 2.70 ERA in 2010 and was named the 2010 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year.

Go watch some baseball this weekend.

I also wanted to link to a fantastic piece by Beyond the Box Score on how the new bats should affect how a baseball is hit.  Just terrific stuff with graphics and science.

Tremendous Tremendous Seth;

First thing out of the box from Tubby, “Be a bit cooler on Saturday, need to have a good idea where we’re at.” Now I am 100% sure that we have an influence on Tubby.

The new business school makes me want to go back and get a masters. My wife won’t let me though because of girls in short skirts and cowboys boots.

"looks" at strong saftey?

Meaning what, exactly?

1. The coach pondered it?

2. Don Williams pulled out his charts and played with a highlighter and scratched his head?

3. Others considered it?

OR

4. We are cycling players through a position, getting them a little experience and a little taste of it and building some skills upon the existing variety of talent. – Not unlike the quarterback shuffle/rotation.

Please let it be number 4. I like what Tubs did with the quarterbacks this way, and hopefully that is continuing, if not expanding into other positions. The versatility would be helpful, and if the injuries are anything like last year, likely even nessacary.

Is there any way to clarify this?

by Raider289 on Mar 4, 2011 8:10 AM CST reply actions

I don’t understand. I think Williams is just reporting where Glasgow had players lined up in practices at each of the 3 safety positions.

I was just trying for a clarification.

Okay, so more like # 4 then? You think it was in reference to where guys were getting plugged in to a position. I was hoping so -but couldn’t be sure, based on the language.

We have all these WORDS in the English language ready and waiting to lend clarity, but they don’t do anyone any good if they just sit on the shelf.

I guess if this is probably the case, then all is well.

by Raider289 on Mar 4, 2011 8:30 AM CST up reply actions

Injuries are unfortunate;

But when a team goes from having a few injuries to a plenty, you have start with the strength and conditioning of the atheletes and what you are asking them to do. Last year we had a lot of injuries on both sides of the ball. Here we are into Tubby’s second spring and the injury bug is hitting us hard already.

I think Tubby needs to re evaluate the weather conditions before he holds another practice. Just saying.

Leach legislation

Strictly in terms of finance, if this were to happen (law change), there needs to be a lock/un-lock function on what he wants to do depending on how critical the economy is.

Generally speaking, there should be at least a chance to approach this sort of recourse, but very bad things could happen if the floodgates are opened with this sort of precedent during hard economic times (guaranteed to come around every now and then). Consider what would happen if every state employee laid off during hard times could work a system like that. It would amount to a financial raid on the state of Texas.

The trouble is – who would hold the keys to this proposed lock? The governor? The Lt. Gov?

by Raider289 on Mar 4, 2011 8:25 AM CST reply actions

If we are able to hold our politicians accountable for their actions;

then maybe they would actually govern for the people and by the people.

Go get em Coach.

Private companies open for business every day knowing they can be sued

And it’s not like the State of Texas has no lawyers on the payroll. Government will always have the very longest of timelines to outlast a plaintiff. All Leach is asking for is accountability. We threw off King George III in 1776. Why the common law still enshrines his personal rights & privileges in the law today is beyond me.

I live in the county;

and recently I had sherrif drive up to my front yard and hit his horn siren. I walked outside and asked why he was on my property. He asks me who I am , and I tell him none of your business. He tells me that they are looking for a guy and he wants to know if I am him. I tell him no. He wants to see ID and I ask him to leave my property. Then he proceeds to tell me who owns the car in the drive way. I tell him, I do. He gets out of his car and threatens me because my car is registered in my business name and not my personal name. Son of a bitch almost arrested me. He did an illegal search of my car. I had to call my lawyer right there on the spot.

Pretty much what I was about to type.

You aren’t opening any floodgates unless there is a ton of wrong doing being done by the state. In that case, there is something very wrong in letting the state hide from it’s bad behavior. What is worse? I for one, say open the gates and let it flood if that is what the outcome is. I doubt that there would be a flood, but if there is, the principal of the thing would make it worthwhile in my opinion. If the state isn’t doing anything wrong, the cost would be minimal as the plaintiffs are shelling out money each time they try a case, which would limit frivolous suits to a large degree.

by Dunka on Mar 4, 2011 9:56 AM CST up reply actions

The premise sounds good - but

the abuse of such processes, especially with those with a point to prove, or a flotilla of activists intentionally trying to flood or jam the system is always a lingering threat.

Even non-worst-case where it is not intentional – Perhaps:
A batch of disgruntled people being (mis?)lead to the gates of such a legal facility because an activist group has told them that they have “rights” to “what is theirs” or some other such typical story that gets out of hand as things can and will do – can bring enormous costs in the simple process of checking cases out and telling them that they had no real reason within the new framework to be there in the first place. Of course they got nothing out of it, but the overhead becomes monumental.

To what degree is that self-limited when it can be seen as an “in” for a source of wealth and power some of the more self interested types/orgs?

With the budget issues our great state is facing – which are lilterally an emergency – finding a representative willing/able to devote time to this will be a tough sell. I’d rather not answer to my constituencies regarding how I spent this session if I spent time dealing with one man’s war against a university.

Emergency yes...yet they found the time all day yesterday...

to address an issue wholly unrelated to the current state budget shortfall. An issue, despite a possible $27 billion deficit, that Perry also referred to as an “emergency”.

Seems “emergency” is a rather subjective term in Austin.

Weather & Leach

So good to hear Tubs comment on the weather, he missed a day this week and I was concerned.

I’m glad that Leach is pursuing legislation. If a contract with the state isn’t worth the paper it’s written on that needs to be addressed and the only way that can be done is by changing the law.

Even though the legislation is written specific to Leach’s situation keeping sovereign immunity in place except in this instance, it could be precedent setting. I don’t know anything about the lobbying group he’s hired other than they have some of the top paid lobbyists in town. As much as I love Leach, it’s probably best if they don’t bring him along to visit legislators…

Of course the reason soveriegn immunity

I think Leach is barking up the wrong tree on this one

he found out during his trip through the appeals process what everyone with eyes and ears already knows, which is that in the eternal battle between Labor v Management, Texas judges will always come down on the side of Management (especially when the state is the management in question). Trying to lobby the very system that appointed those judges in the first place probably isn’t going to yield much success. Pursue your non-monetary damages if you absolutely must, but at some point you have to own up to the fact that your perceived litigiousness is the reason you haven’t gotten a new coaching gig yet, and that continuing to beat the dead horse isn’t doing anything to alter that perception.

by mojavereject on Mar 4, 2011 8:38 AM CST reply actions

I am going out on a limb here;

but I don’t think Leach will ever coach again. I don’t think he really wants to. He can make just as much money broadcasting and consulting. He is a likeble guy, and fans love him. And don’t forget, he has a law degree.

I am always in favor of challenging the establishment. In this case, our over paid and career politicians that don’t give a crap about their constituents.

But he needs to let it go and stop fighting the system.
Which is what makes him toxic right now.
There are many schools that are desperate for a winning program.

Leach will coach again once all the legal nonsense fades away. If he didn’t want to coach he wouldn’t be interviewing. All it’s going to take is one program that needs a winning coach badly and he’s back in business. Some school will rise up eventually.

I think you are painting a brand new picture of it all from the wrong point of view. The Leach suit is not a Marxist struggle, and putting it forward that way, if I have you right, seems a little off base- forgive me for seeing it that way if it wasn’t as you intended.

Ideally, to some degree the state should look out for the interests of the taxpayers since that is who they work for. On the other hand upholding the law, and enforcing it -when one could have been broken is also of core importance to a society of law (instead of a society of mob rule where things change depending on the prevailing wind/sentiments.)

Leach contends a law was broken/waived/null more or less. I don’t see much of the argument that a private buisness has been going around whipping the galley slaves…

housekeeping

Heh, my busy morning is about to come to an end for real life stuff – but I had begun my reply before there were any other comments.

Being the smartest kid in the dumb row, I type slowly especially while trying to assemble a coherent thought and translate it into a sensible sentence and then edit it all into something that works. If I don’t take my time and make the effort -it can be a total mess.

While I am at it, other ones tend to get in above me and I get that perceived disconnect and have to then go back sometimes and point back at what it was that I was talking about, otherwise we get this island of floating information that can appear unattached to anything, and lends incoherence to the conversation.

I am not sure of how to fix it because when I begin it all appears that it will go in the right place, but when you click “post” it skips down below things that got posted in the mean time and can appear orphaned. It seems that it is just something I have to contend with? Yes, I really am that slow, hah!

pretty sure it's not Marxist to say that Leach got screwed with his pants on by Texas Tech

Can’t believe I’m arguing this on DTN of all places. It can’t really be helped if ‘labor vs management’ is a dog whistle term for you.

I don't believe it is either, which was my point.

however putting it the way you did- seizes the framework of a historical argument, and only now that you have a follow up in, I can see that you were re-appropriating the structure of the argument to describe something totally different. Tricky. Since we actually both agree, I don’t think any further confusion of the issue is needed.

what’s up with all the ad’s on DTN home page now?? have i just been oblivious to it this whole time?

Take your plusses

where you can get them….my morning drive listening to the ticket and there were only 18 teams to have all sellouts at home last year in D1….out of 118 teams. NU, UT, OU and Tech are 4 of them.

yep, I was at the Weber sell out.

(we had plenty of water at that one.)

Funny Friday Story

So a buddy got to attend a Tech practice leading up to the Ticket City Bowl. He brought his brother in law who is a high school coach/AD who just implemented Air Raid/Air Raid lite….same as the 2010 Tech version. TT comes over and talks to them and when he finds this out he asks how they did….the guys tells him that they lost their starting QB and they only won 3 or 4 games (I can’t remember which).
TT then calls NB over to introduce them, and says “Hey NB, this guy lost his ass running your POS offense”. The coach told him the QB story and they talked.

That is funny;

Don’t you just get the impression that Tubby just can’t help himself. If he was still at Auburn, they would have won the NC game 3-2. He wasted 10 scholarshis on RB’s. I guess we might have a running back next year, you think. We are going to have 250 yards total offesne. 200 on the ground and 50 in the air. Nobody will have to stand anymore.

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.

By the way - Love Totally TTU site.

Have been going there ever since construction on the stadium began a while back. Love that someone takes the time. That the photography is first rate makes it that much better.
Looking at the new Rawls building – will be awfully impressive when framed by spring greenery!

Observations:

Re: The Drifter’s Presser

Curiously, I determined the order after long consideration while sitting in a dark shed.

Loved the new pics of the campus...

I’m actually heading to Lubbock this weekend so I look forward to seeing it all in person.

The new Rawls Business College building actual looks very educational

.
It is going to be a very impressive looking addition to the campus.

I too wish I could go back and get my Masters. Maybe in a few more years.

My nephew graduates in May so I will be on the campus then to see the construction and other changes.

DD notes

The pics of the campus, including the Jones, are really nice. I really liked the campus and the new buildings only add to its beauty.

I am not too concerned about the FB team, or the weather, as more will be determined in the Fall.

College football is probably no worse off than it was 40 years ago. However, with all of the improvements in communications, it may seem worse.

The BB recruits seem to be really doing well across the board. While Jr has done a good job recruiting these guys, we still need a new coach that is capable of “teaching” them up and not allowing them to languish.

Baseball lost 4-0 to TCU in first game. Hopefully they will turn it around and get a win on Saturday.
