Five Questions | Second Scrimmage Questions

Five_questions_-_tiltshift__resize__medium

1.  IS THERE A QUARTERBACK COMPETITION? | I've maintained that Doege is in the lead, but that the quarterback competition should go into the fall practices.  On Saturday, Karam had a better day than Doege.  Here's all 4 quarterbacks:

Seth Doege | 16-31 (51.6%) | 246 Yds | 7.9 YPA | 1 TD | 2 INT
Jacob Karam | 12-21 (57.1%) | 204 Yds | 9.7 YPA | 4 TD | 0 INT
Scotty Young | 10-16 (62.5%) | 137 Yds | 8.5 YPA | 0 TD | 1 INT
Michael Brewer | 2-3 (66.7%) | 11 Yds | 3.66 YPA | 0 TD | 1 INT

Karam's 4 touchdowns and throwing the ball down the field with 9.7 YPA.  Young's day also impresses some as well with the highest completion percentage, but didn't get the ball in the endzone.  Competition is good and my question is if you think that there is a legitimate competition between the quarterbacks?

2.  SO FAR, WHO IS THE BEST RUNNING BACK AND BEST RECEIVER? | We are two scrimmages into spring practice and the rushing totals from the running backs (The first set of numbers if from the 2nd scrimmage (PDF) and the second set of numbers is from the 1st scrimmage (PDF).  That's not confusing at all.):

Ronnie Daniels | 12/80 | 10/67
Harrison Jeffers | 5/18 | 15/92
Aaron Crawford | 11/30 | 18/118
Eric Stephens | 8/36 | 0/0

Right now, Daniels may be the most consistent, although Stephens may not be getting a full opportunity (I think the staff is holding Stephens out to let some of the other running backs get some work.  Is Daniels going to force a way into the lineup and is he the best looking running back thus far?  As to the receivers, WR Shawn Corker had a tremendous Saturday, 7 catches for 131 yards and 3 TD's.  Freshman WR Derek Edwards had 6 catches for 85 yards.  WR Alexander Torres, IR Cornelius Douglas and WR Marcus Kennard all had over 65 receiving yards yesterday.  Remember, it's all about consistency with receivers (putting up numbers each and every week).  Thus far, who's impressing you two scrimmages into spring practice?

3.  WHO DO YOU WANT TO HIGHLIGHT FROM THE DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL? | For the second week in a row, ILB Sam Fehoko led the team in tackles, and on Saturday he had 1 interception, 8 tackles and looks to be the guy who will be your starting middle linebacker.  There were some other nice surprises (PDF statistics), including DT Chris Perry had 8 tackles and 2 sacks, Brett Dewhurst and Tyrone Sonier both had a sack (this = blitzing linebackers!) and redshirt freshman DT Coby Coleman had 7 tackles.  In watching some of the video from the scrimmage, it was really nice to see a handful of cornerbacks having some safety help, including a really nice play from CB Eugene Neboh tipping a ball into the hands of S D.J. Johnson.  Anyone you want to highlight from this weekend's defensive performance?

4.  ANY SURPRISES ON THE UNOFFICIAL DEPTH CHART? | LAJ's Don Williams released his unofficial depth chart and there are a handful of things that jump out at me:  ILB Blake Dees is still running with the 1st team; SLB Daniel Cobb starting over SLB Cqulin Hubert; OL Beau Carpenter the 2nd string right tackle; IR Aaron Fisher backing up IR Austin Zouzalik at the Y-receiver; WR Eric Ward starting at Lyle Leong's old position at split-end.  What jumps out to you? (And yes, I'm intentionally not discussing a certain tight end.  Don't care about her at all.)

5.  ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT THE BASEBALL TEAM AND ARE THERE ANY CANDIDATES OTHER THAN BILLY CLYDE GILLISPIE? | This is a combination question because there's just too much football.  The baseball team went 0-3 this past weekend against the #8 TCU Horned Frogs.  Are you concerned at all to have such a rough stretch with only one more weekend tournament before conference play? Also, in the past week, there have been two articles on Billy Clyde Gillispie in connection with the Texas Tech job.  Last week, FWST's Mike Jones wrote an article imploring that Texas Tech hire Gillispie, that he's a changed man, and this past weekend, SAEN's Buck Harvey likened Gillispie to former Texas Tech football coach, Mike Leach.  Harvey says that Hocutt was in College Station to watch Texas Tech's final regular season game and Harvey wonders if Hocutt will keep it safe, like he did at Miami and hire a "safe" coach like Al Golden, or if he will hire a coach like Gillispie who has some warts.  Since it seems that Gillispie is the only candidate mentioned with the Texas Tech job, is Gillispie the only candidate that should be mentioned and if not, who are some other candidates that you'd like to see considered for the position? I should also mention that the Big 12 released the 2011 Phillips 66 All-Big 12 team and the only mention of any Red Raider was PG John Roberson as an honorable mention.  The Red Raiders will face Missouri on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.

BONUS TIP | I know there's a handful of folks that read DTN who are also living in the DFW area and wanted to mention that you probably already know that there are going to be 8 In-N-Out Burger franchises very soon.  I wanted to also tip everyone to the secret menu with In-N-Out Burger

The questions are after the jump for copying and pasting into your own comment.

1. IS THERE A QUARTERBACK COMPETITION?

Probably not. It probably won’t be surprising if Doege is consistently inconsistent in his first year as a starter.

It’s nice to see that we have a strong group of young QBs who will be pushing Doege, and who might see some action of Doege gets into a funk during the year.

I like Karam, and it’s good to see him doing well.

2. SO FAR, WHO IS THE BEST RUNNING BACK AND BEST RECEIVER?

Best RB: No idea. We’ve got a million of ‘em. I’m not worried here. You never know which running back can really bring it until the games start. How many 4-star and 5-star back disappear at Texas? The RB depth chart looks about right to me.

Best WR: No idea. I’m still anticipating an even distribution during the season, with no one receiver dominating the numbers. Each week we should expect a different receiver to shine. I’m good with that.

3. WHO DO YOU WANT TO HIGHLIGHT FROM THE DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL?

It is too soon.

4. ANY SURPRISES ON THE UNOFFICIAL DEPTH CHART?

Offense
LT: Terry McDaniel starting. (Assuming this is due to injuries to Waddle.)
FB: Omar Ontiveros (We have a fullback?)
PK: Donnie Carona (how bad can the other guys be?)

Defense
LE: Dartwan Bush starting. (I guess Barr is still making his way back from injury)
RE: Jackson Richards is starting over Scott Smith (?)
LB: Blake Dees is second in the depth chart as a Frosh (interesting)
SLB: Do we really need 6 SLB’s?
SS: After Bullitt we look thin and inexperienced
FS: DJ Johnson starting ahead of Tre Porter? Wow.
BCB: All newbies. 4 previous starters on the IR though

Defense looks like a work in progress.

5. ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT THE BASEBALL TEAM AND ARE THERE ANY CANDIDATES OTHER THAN BILLY CLYDE GILLISPIE?

Baseball Team: No idea how good they really are. Let’s hope they can beat who they’re supposed to beat, and steal games from the better teams. If they can do that, we should be able to sneak into the NCAA tournament – which would be a tremendous achievement for Spencer and Co.

Basketball: Other candidates? Yes. Better candidates? I do not want the Al Golden of basketball to take over at Tech (but push come to shove I’ll take that option over another year of PK).

I'm surprised to see Porter as a second stringer, too...

you’ve gotta get that kid on the field. He was too good as a freshman to languish behind Johnson for two years.

Question #6: Women's sports

Hey, our women are awsome this year: Softball, basketball, soccer, track. They are putting the men’s teams to shame. Should we be paying a little more attention to them? Guns up!

QB Battle

At the spring game last year I thought Karam outplayed Doege. I hope the choice of Doege isn’t the coaches choosing the player that is most obedient rather than the player who gives the offense the best chance to succeed. Obedience is the handmaiden of lack of initiative, lack of spark. I’ll be watching the QB’s closely at the spring game this year.

What is "Good-Strong" and why is there always so much more of it after a jump?

by mbrown603 on Mar 7, 2011 7:28 AM CST reply actions

I agree

When i watched the interviews after the scrimmage Karam seemed way more excited to be playing football. Doege sounded like Potts 2.0 (which is ok) i just want someone with some spark to lead our team. It will be interesting to see who pushes who and gets the start come fall.

I've never been crazy about Doege...

I’d like to see Karam or Young get a shot… especially if they continue to outshine Doege in practice and scrimmages

1. IS THERE A QUARTERBACK COMPETITION?

Most likely not. Like mbrown, I really hope the coaches aren’t just playing the guy who does exactly what the coaches tell him, but they are playing the best guy. Sounds weird but the kiss up isn’t always the best option.

2. SO FAR, WHO IS THE BEST RUNNING BACK AND BEST RECEIVER?

From highlights of that second scrimmage, I’d say Stephens and Daniels have the best moves. Daniels arms look pretty thin in the pictures from TTURED though. That could be a problem holding on to the ball in the big 12.

3. WHO DO YOU WANT TO HIGHLIGHT FROM THE DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL?

Foheko. The guy has been awesome. Also, the secondary may be a work in progress, and they are going against new QB’s, but they seem to be making plays.

4. ANY SURPRISES ON THE UNOFFICIAL DEPTH CHART?

Doesn’t mean much b/c of spring injuries.

5. ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT THE BASEBALL TEAM AND ARE THERE ANY CANDIDATES OTHER THAN BILLY CLYDE GILLISPIE?

I wish they could have won one game. With all the new pitching though, beating a top 10 team is hard. I’m still optimistic.

Lets go with Gillispie. Tech fans love characters. And he has the fire to win. A safe hire is a dumb hire when you are only getting 2K fans a game…

1. IS THERE A QUARTERBACK COMPETITION?

I hope so but I’m not sure. I thought Doege had it locked up but it looks like Young and Karam are in it. I just hope we have the right guy throwing the ball in September. I’m glad these guys are so competitive but it would be nice to see one take a lead.

2. SO FAR, WHO IS THE BEST RUNNING BACK AND BEST RECEIVER?

Best RB is Daniels. Physically this guy will be the difference maker and he’s the youngest of all of them already making a name for himself. Stephens will be fine for next season as well but having this depth is pretty nice. Torres is still the best receiver for me but I suspect Kennard, Ward and Corker to score loads of points this season provided we have an accurate QB.

3. WHO DO YOU WANT TO HIGHLIGHT FROM THE DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL?

Tre’ Porter. I think this guy shores up the secondary and becomes the leader on the defense.

4. ANY SURPRISES ON THE UNOFFICIAL DEPTH CHART?

Too early to say. I’ll wait until summer before being surprised about any position changes.

5. ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT THE BASEBALL TEAM AND ARE THERE ANY CANDIDATES OTHER THAN BILLY CLYDE GILLISPIE?

Not too concerned about the baseball team. I think they are very good but not TCU good at this point. I suspect they will do very well in conference play. I think BCG is a guy who could bring new life to a boring and predictable Tech basketball team. Fans need a reason to get excited and PK isn’t bring that so bring in a guy who is a proven winner that can recruit talent and get people interested in Tech basketball again.

Only have time for one.

1. Is there a quarterback competition?
Well, I hope they are all competitive. I maintain that I want to see them plugged in at game time according to their strengths and weaknesses. I think some of the confusion about my point of view stems from the idea that we have one or two probable starters and if we have to call it a competition, we can’t confuse it for the same scenario as last year.

I want to see them all develop and have a serious shot at starting in case we have injuries. Is it me or do guys seem to get hurt a little more under Tubs than the old guy?

For some reason, I really, really like how Karam is good at not throwing interceptions and has slightly lower attempts. This tells me his judgement is a little bit better/less risky. He is nearly as good as Doege was two weeks ago!

Stats from Feb 28 Five questions/first scrimmage:
Seth Doege | 17-26 | 246 Yds | 9.4 YPA | 3 TD | 1 Int
Jacob Karam | 8-17 | 116 Yds | 6.8 YPA | 2 TD | 0 Int
Scotty Young | 9-11 | 63 Yds | 5.7 YPA | 0 TD | 1 Int
Michael Brewer | 2-7 | 15 Yds | 2.1 YPA | 1 TD | 0 Int

Stats from Mar 7 Five questions/Second scrimmage:
Seth Doege | 16-31 (51.6%) | 246 Yds | 7.9 YPA | 1 TD | 2 INT
Jacob Karam | 12-21 (57.1%) | 204 Yds | 9.7 YPA | 4 TD | 0 INT
Scotty Young | 10-16 (62.5%) | 137 Yds | 8.5 YPA | 0 TD | 1 INT
Michael Brewer | 2-3 (66.7%) | 11 Yds | 3.66 YPA | 0 TD | 1 INT

If we had to start someone TONIGHT, I pick Karam.
Now, if we need to up the point production and go a little risky because we are behind- I would swap in Doege in the second half assuming the defense is getting a little tired. He is the guy that is gonna make the big plays, as well as more mistakes and do it from a longer distance.
The problem with starting Doege (as of now) is he seems to be the type that might give away the whole game in the first quarter with errors. Not sold on Doege yet because he might get a little too hungry and take silly risks. Who knows – maybe he settles down a bit before the season starts? That would work for me, too.

1. IS THERE A QUARTERBACK COMPETITION?
yes, But i think whoever is the most consistent QB is gonna get the start.
If Karam keeps this up how can you not start him. But Part of what kept sticks from starting last year was he would scramble out of the pocket and the coaches did not like that. If i were Karam i would try not to do that.

2. SO FAR, WHO IS THE BEST RUNNING BACK AND BEST RECEIVER?
I know Daniels has impressed but you really can go off numbers in practice.
I say Stephens is the best until another running back proves otherwise in a real game situation.
As far as receivers go i say the same thing. Torres is the only one that has proven to be great in a real game. Even when he was playing hurt he was putting up better numbers than Zou and Swindal last year. Corker and Kennard still have to prove they can be consistent in a real game situation. All the talent in the world means nothing if you drop balls in a real game. I also want to mention that depending on who the quarterback is will also determine which receivers get more balls thrown their way. I mean do you really think Leong would have had that many touchdowns if Sheffield was the starter last year? No way.

3. WHO DO YOU WANT TO HIGHLIGHT FROM THE DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL? I say its still too early. There are way to many new faces on that side of the ball.
We may find that some players aren’t good in practice but may have a breakout game like Smith did last year.

4. ANY SURPRISES ON THE UNOFFICIAL DEPTH CHART?
NO, but When Amaro gets here things will change.

1. QUARTERBACK COMPETITION? I agree with Raider289, and if you listened to Karam’s post-scrimmage interview, he is intent on proving he can be the starter—he’s going for it big time. Last season, the game announcers and sportswriters consistently singled out Karam on the sidelines as the player who was up and motivating the others even though he wasn’t in the game. Doege is good, but I don’t know if he is as fiery or as much a team motivator. This being said,I found it quite telling when Tubby was asked about Karam’s performance in his post-scrimmage interview; he almost seemed disappointed Karam did so well, seemed to downplay his efforts, and commented he still had a way to go to push Doege. If we saw anything last year re: Tubby and QB’s it is that he likes the “safe” one even though he will pay lip service to the others. I will be interested in the end to see how much power OC Brown actually has over the final QB choice.

Skip down to 5. RE: BASEBALL—All we know right now is that they aren’t better than the #8 team in the country—that leaves a lot of room for optimism. I’m looking for a great season overall. RE: BASKETBALL—Anyone for trying to lure STEVE ALFORD over from New Mexico? Maybe Bobby would help. I’m betting he’s not being paid $1.7Mil, and money talks.

by Dr-Cane on Mar 7, 2011 9:53 AM CST reply actions

always liked Karam...

Karam has ALWAYS been a force on the sideline, hasn’t he? Wasn’t he taken on the road with the team during his redshirt year, even though the coaches “knew” he wasn’t going to play simply because he was such a positive force on the sideline?

In-N-Out Burger

1. No
5. No concerns about BCG. In fact it would be good karma to hire him after the way the bell tower boys dismissed his brilliant twin. Am concerned Hocutt will feel pressured to make a "safe’ hire.

Could barely focus once I saw the bonus tip on In-N-Out Burger: this may be reason enough to move to Dallas. If not, it’s certainly reason enough for numerous road trips. thanks for the secret menu too!

My son and I will go down and patronize the Whataburger next to the In and Out being built in Allen when it opens up here shortly. I don’t get to eat nearly as many burgers as I would want, but if Martians were to land and judge between Whataburger and In and out….well, lets just say that they would have jalapenos’s on their burger.
And yes, variety is good…..but I am passionate about places that insist on placing a buttload of sauce (dressing, mayo or special sauce) on anything….I am a strong ANTI.

It does kind of remind me of the burger at the original Chili's on Meadow Road & Greenville in the mid 70's

This was before Brinker took Chili’s & made them a chain restaurant. The burgers were all hand made & no two ever came out the same shape. But the Chili’s burger was 1/2 pound which is closer to the size I make at home than the 5 Guys burger.

Observations:

1. IS THERE A QUARTERBACK COMPETITION?
Sure. Doege is still the front runner. BUT lets not sit DOEGE or start KARAM based on one scrimmage. We all need to be careful to not start handing out labels like “Potts 2.0” or “fiery” or “motivator” based on next to nothing. That said. I think its still Doege’s to lose. The fact that Karam is pushing is great and even beyond that, I think Young is pushing Karan at a much higher rate than Karam is pushing Doege. While we should keep an open mind to Karam over Doege maybe we need to keep an eye out for what I think is an even greater possibility…Young overtaking Karam. Young is not starter material yet, but a 62% comp rate tells me he’s picking up the offense at a rate faster than either Doege and Karam did the last two years.
2. SO FAR, WHO IS THE BEST RUNNING BACK AND BEST RECEIVER?

Im completely open to the fact Ronnie Daniels is excelling in what very well could be a VERY open depth chart. go 4 it Ronnie. The fact that we even NEED to write up a depth chart for RBs is GREAT…..Omar Ontiveros? FB? since when? ;)
WRs: The fact that our 3of4 or our starting WRs are carryovers from last year diminishes my excitement. I like the dimensions of and rumblings abour Kennard, Edwards, and Moore. I also am liking the rumblings about guys that seem to have been on our roster forever but are now starting to emerge. IE: Ward, Corker, and Fisher. Im not hearing enough about CornDog. He needs to step it up.
3. WHO DO YOU WANT TO HIGHLIGHT FROM THE DEFENSIVE SIDE OF THE BALL?

Fehoko = Finally. But I like the idea of Fehoko, Dees, Cobb, and Hubert being our starting 4 LBs. The injuries in our CB squad is something I hope is a passing thing but I think we’re solid. Lets hope something emerges from last season’s carnage.
4. ANY SURPRISES ON THE UNOFFICIAL DEPTH CHART?

Youre not the one handing out the labels on these guys that have not played a single game yet. RIGHT NOW youd pick Karam. Thats cool. I wouldnt but thats ok. We have a lot of football left to play (errrr practice) and that decision is very far off. I think we’d both agree to declare guys “motivators”, “fiery”, etc would be dangerous and to declare one player’s positives more important than anothers even more so.

The thing that I SO respect about The Drifter is that once he made a decision, he stuck to it. I think the fact that Potts knew he wasnt gonna get yanked at the coaches whim/frustration/etc really let him settle down and play well. Not spectacular, but well.

Mark it down.

Karam will be the next GREAT Tech QB. He has swagger, something that I truly believe is lacking around the tech locker room. Plus, he is very athletic. His accuracy and above average to good mobility remind me a lot of chase daniel, and if he can master our offense the way Chase did at mizzou and Glasgow can field a stout D Tech may be back in the hunt for a national title by his senior season.

On another note, Tubbs has grown on me a lot since the Glasgow higher. TCU has the best defensive coaching in the country, and I loved this hire as soon as I heard it. Glasgow isnt just another young assistant either, he has a wealth of experience. I think that was an extremely wise and logical hire.
