TEXAS TECH FOOTBALL

PRACTICE REPORT

Head coach Tommy Tuberville has his post-practice press conference and I do want to clarify a couple of things.  The football team decided to practice indoors at Wolfforth's Frenship High School's practice facility because of the high winds yesterday and obviously, Tuberville is politicking for an indoor facility at Texas Tech.  Personally, I've got no problem with an indoor facility, it's an arms-race in college football and there are times that having an indoor facility would be good.  And it wouldn't surprise me if Tuberville's big fund-raising event this summer is to gather the funds to have an indoor facility built.  He supposedly raised the money to put field-turn on the practice fields and if he raises the money to get it done, great, but I don't want to take away from the other facilities that need upgrading.  Knowing Tuberville, he's got this. Here's my non-transcript:

Good spirited practice.  Little worried about the wind today so moved indoors, always worried about the wind.  Hopefully TTU will have a similar facility, maybe bigger.  Good scrimmage on Saturday.  QB's made a few mistakes, but played okay.  Defense played okay, but had too many mistakes.  On Thursday, will have 70 play scrimmage with officials to end on the right note before spring break.  Got a lot done today.  Not any defensive players stepping up.  DE Jackson Richards is playing better.  DE Scott Smith was playing better, but hyper-extended his elbow.  Offensively, put in some play-action, and try to get some on film on Thursday.  Hard to tell defensively because playing so many guys.  Put S Tre' Porter at cornerback. Would rather play him at safety, but not going to have much choice.  In the fall, he'll have to play both.  DE Dartwan Bush has gotten better, his first steps are good.  Wish we could have redshirted him last year, but he's got to get a little stronger and play him on the edge a little bit more.  Probably #1 guy for pass-rusher, but has to work on technique.  Not worried about the week off, more worried with the coaches than the players.

LAJ's Don Williams profiles DE Dartwan Bush and I thought that TE Tony Trahan's comments were the best comments about Bush:

Tight end Tony Trahan said it’s Bush’s long arms that give him trouble.

"You go up against the guy, you’re trying to lock out on him, and he’s touching your neck and you’ve still got a foot to go (to reach him)," said Trahan, a 6-5, 228-pounder. "That’s definitely tough.

"Whether it’s Texas or A&M or OU, he’s going to give those guys all kind of problems. He’s going to be a speed demon off the end."

Even though Tech coaches wish they had him four more years instead of three, Bush said he benefited from the limited game experience.

"It’s going to help me a lot," he said, "because now I’m used to the fans and the pace, the strength of players and how fast they are. It’s going to help me big time."

I also wanted to link to CFN's Richard Cirminiello and his top 11 JUCO players in the 2011 signing class and DE/DT Leon Mackey makes the cut at #9:

9. DE Leon Mackey, Texas Tech
Mackey had a number of options coming out of Hinds (Miss.) Community College. He chose Lubbock, which has head coach Tommy Tuberville absolutely ecstatic. At 6-4 and 260 pounds, he has tremendous size for a pass rusher, blending the strength to stop the run and the speed to make plays in the backfield. Three years removed from high school, he’s a physically and emotionally mature defender, who’s going to help the Red Raiders as soon as he gets acclimated to his new surroundings. Flashing the light feet and balance of a former tight end, he’s capable of adding some weight and sliding inside if the need arises.

MISCELLANEOUS

The day before yesterday (Yes, I'm a day late on all the musings, that's what happens when your college fires it's basketball coach.) Yahoo! Sports Charles Robinson and Dan Wetzel broke the story that Ohio St. head coach Jim Tressel knew that his players may have been receiving benefits during the season and failed to report it.  Last night, Ohio St. and Tressel held a press conference confirming that this is the case and that Tressel will be suspended the first 2 games of next year and will be fined $250,000.  Just like last year when Leach was terminated, I think DTN was a great place to figure out, from a fans' perspective what was really happening and so I also always recommend hitting up SB Nation's resident Ohio St. blog, Along The Olentangy . . . CBS Sports with a note that the bowl system is facing questions from the IRS.  Don't ever mess with the IRS . . . BON's TXStampede has a nice summary on the state of college football recruiting . . .

MORE PAT KNIGHT FALLOUT

LAJ's Courtney Linehan did a Q&A with Pat Knight and not surprisingly, he's continuing to be incredibly gracious:

CL: Did he seem surprised?

PK: No. It was great. We were just two guys sitting there talking about what was going on, everything. Even once the decision was made we sat there and talked for a while longer. I love the guy. President Bailey, Chancellor (Kent) Hance and Coach Myers, you couldn’t ask for a better group. The next guy who’s coming in is going to work for three great guys. I know people think it’s a weird situation, but it’s business. I understand. Those guys gave me an opportunity, they’ve been first class to me, so I’m going to be first class to them.

And RP.com's Travis Cram has video of PK talking about the entire situation.  He does seem at peace:

RaiderPowerTV: Knight Talks About Firing (via RaiderPowerTV)

I also recommend Williams and Hyatt Show's Ryan Hyatt talking with former Red Raider Andy Ellis.  I really like Ellis and I think he loves this university.  It's not surprising for me that people continue to say nice things about Pat and Ellis really thought that PK would succeed at Texas Tech.

Coaching candidates and other stuff . . . after the jump.

MORE ON COACHING CANDIDATES

LAJ's Courtney Linehan writes that the coaching search will move very quickly, the next 10 to 14 days and Linehan writes that new Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt will be making the hire.  Linehan also mentions Billy Gillispie, Nebraska's Doc Sadler, North Texas' Johnny Jones, and New Mexico's Steve Alford as candidates, although the official that she talked to said that no candidates have been identified.  I found RRS.com's Chris Level's tweet that said that Sadler is pushing for Gillispie to get the Texas Tech job:

An interesting tidbit regarding Nebraska's Doc Sadler: He is doing everything he can to help Billy Gillispie get the #TexasTech job. #pals

In talking about Gillispie, there are two sides to this coin.  Up first is Yahoo! Sports Jason King who has a lengthy article about Gillispie and how his life has changed:

Looking closer to 41 than 51, Gillispie hardly resembles the puffy-cheeked man whose police mug shot was plastered on the front of newspapers across Kentucky 18 months ago. His face is thinner, his eyes sparkle and his voice booms with energy as he talks about the satisfaction he’s received from working with charitable organizations such as MADD and Big Brothers Big Sisters the past few months.

Ask him about his legal issues and Gillispie hardly bristles. Even though therapists in the Houston rehabilitation center run by former NBA coach John Lucas concluded he didn’t have a problem with alcohol – "He had a problem making good decisions when he was around alcohol, big difference," Lucas said – Gillispie has decided to quit drinking.

I can't summarize this article, so if you want to try to judge whether or not you think Gillispie has changed, this is the article to read.  On the other side of the coin, the Lexington Herald-Leader's John Clay writes about some of the issues that he had while at Kentucky:

In Kentucky, however, we saw him from a sharply different angle. We got him close-up. We had two years of it.

Our advice: If Texas Tech is serious about hiring Gillispie as Pat Knight's successor, do a better background check than the one done by his previous employer.

Here, we now know some things about the mystery that is Billy G., and we know some things about which the Red Raiders should ask.

First, ask him about his personal life.

FWST's Gil Lebreton writes that now that Pat is gone, does Texas Tech have any answers, and yawns at football coach Tommy Tuberville while writing an article.  Lebreton's point, I think, is that Texas Tech needs to hire head coaches to distinguish itself since it will always be an uphill battle to beat UT or OU.  ###

BIG 12 TOURNAMENT

LAJ's Courtney Linehan writes that PK and the players are ready for the Big 12 Tournament and PG John Roberson says that he thought the administration would let things play out:

"I thought they’d get a chance to play out the Big 12, so it was shocking," Roberson said. "And to see he was still going to coach us, I thought that would be awkward for him."

Knight compared the situation to ripping off a band-aid. He said speculation about his status had tainted the atmosphere around his team, and he wanted the news out in the open for the athletes, assistant coaches, and his family.

Also of note is that Texas Tech will pay out the last two years of Pat's contract and the salary for the coaches for the next 6 months.  Finally, there's speculation that Oklahoma's Jeff Capel's job is in jeopardy, which is strange considering he has a 58% winning record (from 2006 through 2011), won 28 games in the 2008-2009 season and has had 2 less than stellar seasons.  I always like Capel, thought he did a good job, but he went down the wrong road recruiting a few players (I can't remember the names, but they left for the NBA last year) and I think he has a pretty young team that will probably be better next year.

Bring on the Cats has a quick primer for the Big 12 Tournament . . . Big 12 Hoops' Joe Lloyd has point spreads and predictions for the 1st round of the Big 12 Tournament . . . Big 12 Hoops' Evan Pfaff has a preview for Missouri Texas Tech, which is tonight at 8:30 p.m.  Prime Time!!!! . . . .

I hope it's both.

I couldn’t stand it last season when we took every snap from shotgun. There were some times in the season when we never should have been in the shotgun formation. It looked awkward seeing them take the victory formation out of the shogun last season.

by jkcp on Mar 9, 2011 8:08 AM CST up reply actions

The victory formation always bothers me.

How long does the quarterback- the team leader – have to spend on his knees begging? I remember one game last year in particular.

It screams “We don’t think we can do another few seconds of the football thing without losing control and fouling it all up, please, please, please, have mercy!”

Besides the wind, this is something else that strikes me as Tubs not having fully adjusted to West Texas. It just seems he hasn’t quite got a handle on our values in addition to the weather.

by Raider289 on Mar 9, 2011 8:57 AM CST up reply actions

Hell yea

Even in the Mike Leach era we took some snaps from under center for certain situations. I don’t care if we run our offense out of the shotgun when there is ROOM to run it…. I just think that if we had tried snapping the ball from under center for example if our backs are against the goaline or 4 and 1 or 4 and inches situations would be even better than trying to do those situations out of the shotgun.

I think the hammer will fall on Ohio State…the email exchanges pretty much paint him in a tight corner. Did you catch the press conference??? Oh, my gosh…I’ve never seen something so utterly fantasy in my life. The AD asks that the coach not fire HIM over this?! tOSU will be made an example of on this one, I bet…and hope.

But Tuberville doesn’t need to keep bringing up the wind in West Texas. Everyone Knows it’s Windy:

Indoor Facility

“always worried about the wind”

The first honest statement I’ve heard out of Tubs.

Seriously, though, how awesome would it be if he raised the funds for a DOME stadium, not just an indoor practice facility? I know… it’s far fetched… but can you imagine the homefield advantage we’d have? Locked into a dome with our fans, all the other teams would have to wear yellow pants to hide the fact that they had all pee’d themselves.

by battledome on Mar 9, 2011 8:47 AM CST up reply actions

Okay, Billy Gillispie-

The more I hear, the less I think it would ever happen.

For all of his faults, I think Tubs has significant pull with who gets hired/fired – and he does a fair job with that. If that’s the case, this guy totally does not fit the Tubs model.

I have no evidence to support any of this, but if it walks like a duck…

by Raider289 on Mar 9, 2011 7:42 AM CST reply actions

Billy G come with a lot of baggae;

The guy was on a fast track and slaughtered anyone who got in his way. Problem was, when he finally go tot the top, he was the only one standing. This is the guy we need to hire. He can turn this program around and get us back at least to the NCAA tournament.

I don’t think Billy G will be around for more than a couple of years. He says he’s a changed man, but I don’t believe people every change their stripes. They may roll in the mud, but sooner or later you wash off the mud, and the stripes are still there. But, we need a guy like this.

Once he turns the program around, then Hance Pants can find some clause in his contract and fire him without pay. The Tubby can coach the basketball team. There is no way Tubby can coach another season in the wind. Basketball is an indoor sports.

I want Billy G., but if we can’t get him, then I like Steve Alford. He has done a tremendous tremendous job at New Mexico. My brother in law is the trainer at UNM, he would be pissed if we got Alford.

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.

by Btech on Mar 9, 2011 7:56 AM CST up reply actions

So your angle is

That he would be more of a near-term turnaround guy – like someone you would bring in after a bankruptcy, all the while knowing he is probably not going to be a long-term guy?

by Raider289 on Mar 9, 2011 8:32 AM CST up reply actions

An outdoor facility is important for TTU’s football program. Yes, it is distracting and inefficient to try to work, to communicate, to focus in a strong gusty wind…it is a real issue. The minutes and hours of practice are precious to our players, coaches need to be able to work with great efficiency. EOR !

O.k., someone recommends a thorough back ground check for Gillespie…wow !! What genius !! Someone should get that guy on staff…

Find out who Gillispie’s mentors and confidants are and talk with them about his life this last 12 months or so…who is he today, how has he changed, would you hire him ? Make a considered decision and God Bless it. I dare say it is entirely possible, perhaps likely that Gillespie is not the same man he was before KU booted him…that can be a life changing experience for a sharp minded person. If he is not sharp minded we can’t use him anyway. Could he have achieved what he did on his way to the KU job with but a dull wit ?

I am happy to see that ms lineham mentioned Steve Alford…did she read my post of yesterday ?

Living large in Texas...Texas forever.

by TallMike on Mar 9, 2011 7:59 AM CST reply actions

First, ask him about his personal life.

Why don’t we just ask John Clay? He seems to know everything.

I say hire Gillespie. Unlike Kentucky, we have the benefit of his experience in Lexington on which to judge. We will not be doe-eyed about it. The guy is a potential drunk and a purported tyrant. (Sound familiar?) Far more importantly, though, the guy is bi-winning.

Go register. Or else.

is a winner. If Hocutt is true to his words about why we have score boards at games, he will hire a winner. The other stuff can be dealt with. Look what we did with Leach. He was a pretty crazy guy and fit right in!

It is a bit weird

that Frenship has an indoor facility and Tech doesn’t. Of course that is because Leach said we didn’t need one and he didn’t want one (which is hilarious). I’m sure Tubs will raise the money, he seems to be good at that.

I don’t care about Gillespies past. If they feel he is a changed man then roll the dice. I would interview his family though to get the real scoop.

Every day Texas Tech practices out of the West Texas wind is a day of competitive advantage we throw away

Visitors to Jones Stadium are supposed to be the ones having fits with the Lubbock wind, not the home team. Plus if you get really adept at throwing completions & making field goals in windy conditions you carry that advantage with you to any windy stadium you visit (the old Big 12 North are all set on the Great Plains. Which is where the Lubbock wind passes before reaching West Texas).

I don’t know what the wind was blowing yesterday, but is it a competitive advantage or disadvantage if the wind is blowing 50 MPH? At some point, the wind can be counter-productive to working on certain things in practices. For the most part, I’d prefer to practice outside and I think Tuberville would as well. Having an indoor practice facility is part of keeping up with other programs that do have a facility. It’s not necessary, but it’s a perk and if Tuberville can get it funded without affecting other programs, then I’m fine with it.

The additional facilities would of course be most welcome, but I can’t help but think that the players will soften up some, if whenever the weather gets vaguely inclement, they head indoors to Floridian conditions. Would the Packers have any significant home field advantage if they always trained in 25c (80F roughly) and never went out when it was 20F?
Training as a kid in tennis, come wind, rain, snow, whatever, you adapted your game to the conditions…wind for example – lower place up on serve, shorten the court on ground strokes, take the ball as early as possible, anything to reduce the wind affected ball movements…when passing in the wind, more drills for short, rapid throws with focus on creating yards after the catch….more trick plays involving multiple handoffs/short laterals…that kind of stuff…ah well, doubt I’ll get many people in agreement…

by Wimbledon on Mar 9, 2011 11:00 AM CST up reply actions

Well, I agree. You should practice to be able to play well in the conditions you’re likely to see. At Tech, the wind is your friend. I bet we’ve had more than a handful of wins due to the fact that our team is less effected by wind than the other one was. Alex Trilica might agree. At any rate – I like the idea of improved facilities, and certainly there are conditions that would warrant indoor practices, but I’d certainly be cautious as to what % of practices are run inside as opposed to in the elements.

Maybe they aught to start sleeping under the bleachers during Spring and Fall camps as was done back in the day…do the programs that have an inclement weather practive facility end up with softies and no hope for championships?

Being able to coach in better conditions is a clear advantage to getting information passed to the players and player to player.

Most of the newer indoor facilities are also pressurized. THe theory is that this affects how the players bodies are able to respond. Guys that have practiced in the pressurized facilities say the workouts are much more intense, though I am a bit skeptical. Endurance athletes try to live at higher altitudes to increase their red blood cell count, therby improving endurance when they compete at lower altitude. I suppose having a pressurized facility means that you are effectively living at a higher altidue than you are practicing at, meaning you can practice harder for longer periods. But I am not sure how this pays off from an endurance standpoint when you compete outside.

Indoor Facility

I say raise the money and build one. I can see it having several advantages especially when it come to recruiting and what our competition has. True it won’t represent what might be a rare game day climate. For the most part I think the weather at our homes games has been perfect and most of the wind is in the spring season. A controlled practice climate might also serve as a more effective practice.

Not worried about us practicing indoors if it’s windy enough to be counterproductive to player development. And that’s what spring practice is about – development. I don’t recall Lubbock being exceptionally windy in the fall months, and much less frequently at night, when a lot of games are played. With a limited number of practices to get players up to speed, I’m fine with making sure they have a good environment to do that. I am guessing wind only plays a factor in one, maybe two games a year.

Well, in my experience once called “coach” always called “coach”. I have guys that I (and everyone else) still call coach after 35 years and that weren’t even my coach and that haven’t coached in 10 years. I’ve never heard anyone go around saying “Hey AD.” or “Hey Athletic director…” I tend to agree with RR78 on this – career coaches are almost always called “Coach” by the people who know them. In some ways it’s a very respectful moniker as it indicates recognition for all of the years spent helping young athletes.

"always a little worried about the wind"

Why so myopic Tubs? Lot’s of other things to worry about when you go outside. Allergies are a BIG problem. Players can’t play if they can’t breathe. Let’s make sure we build a practice facility with alergen free materials. And bees, I HATE bees. In fact I HATE any kind of bug. Those moths can fly right into your mouth when your breathing hard, and I think we gave up a touchdown or two because of mosquitoes last season. Holy Shit dude, outside really sucks. Why does my shrink write the word “agoraphobic” on his clipboard?

What else bugs you?

What is "Good-Strong" and why is there always so much more of it after a jump?

Sweating bugs me.

Damnit I hate my sweat, but I hate someone elses sweat worse. Gotta make sure that new indoor practice facility has plenty of fans to blow a lot of air on people so they don’t sweat. But just as long as we get out of that damn wind.

We never complained all the years Dick Winder was here

Some horses are mudders at the track. Dick as a winder on the sidelines. No windspeed ever phased him.

Don’t agree with your comparison. Athletic Director is a title but not commonly used as Governor or coach. It is just not used in normal conversation. Certainly it is used as an introduction or formal title but nowhere else.

I like Tuberville's preoccupation with the weather

It’s kind of his “thing.”

I would love to hear a press conference which goes as follows: “Sure we won the game, but my God did you those cumulus clouds out there?”

"This time it's different."

If we're going to keep hiking up tuition for the kids

might as well squeeze a couple big-ass buildings with impressive looking plaques out of the deal
