Red Raider Gridiron | Post Spring Depth Chart

Red_raider_gridiron_-_tiltshift__resize_-_2__medium

Texas Tech has released the post spring depth chart.  If you need a point of reference, I'm going to refer you to the positional write-ups from this spring:

PREVIOUS ROSTER REVIEWS
Quarterbacks | Running Backs | Offensive Line | Receivers
Defensive Line | Linebackers | Secondary | Special Teams

This is more about you than it is about me and love to know your thoughts on the depth chart.  I've done some tables after the jump to hopefully help you visualize the positions.

So much internet good-good is after the jump.

Star-divide

DEFENSE

LE   DT NT   RE
Sam Fehoko   Kerry Hyder Donald Langley   Dartwan Bush
Jackson Richards SAM Lawrence Rumph Pearlie Graves MIKE Aundrey Barr
  Daniel Cobb     Cqulin Hubert
  Zach Winbush     Blake Dees
CB         CB
Derrick Mays         Tre' Porter
Jeremy Reynolds SS FS
 WS Jarvis Phillips
  Terrance Bullitt D.J. Johnson
 Cody Davis

  Jared Flannel Giorgio Durham
 Brett Dewhurst

This is probably just me, but I really can't see Fehoko starting at defensive end full time.  Once DE Scott Smith and DE Leon Mackey either get back into the good graces of the staff or arrive on campus, I think that defensive end rotation changes a bit.  I also don't necessarily think that the absence of a player necessarily means that the player isn't in the rotation.  Guys like Chris Perry, Coby Coleman and Dennell Wesley will make an impact this fall, as well as the aforementioned Mackey and Smith (assuming they both see the field).

I'm a little surprised not to see Tyrone Sonier on the depth chart and that he's been supplanted by some younger players.  I don't know if and where he fits on the field.  Linebacker is a pretty thin position as far as depth so it's something to watch during the fall.

Go back and look at the secondary review and you'll note the number of options available at these positions.  Lots of depth here, the question is if they can play and I think we may not know this answer until Glasgow is given more than a month to put in his system.  It's supposed to be a more simple system, especially for the defensive backs (we'll get into that later in the summer).

OFFENSE

Z WR   LT LG C RG RT   X WR
Darrin Moore Y IR Terry McDaniel Lonnie Edwards Justin Keown Deveric Gallington Mickey Okafor H IR Eric Ward
Tramain Swindall Alexander Torres LaAdrian Waddle James Polk David Neill Terry McDaniel Beau Carpenter Austin Zouzalik Marcus Kennard
  Summer James           Cornelius Douglas
    TE   QB   BIG H
Summer James   Seth Doege   Ronnie Daniels
Tony Trahan   Jacob Karam   Omar Ontiveros
        Scotty Young

        RB
        Eric Stephens
        Aaron Crawford

Surprisingly, the first thing that jumped out at me was Ontiveros at the "Big H" running back position.  If you don't recall, Ontiveros is a former walk-on defensive tackle and I guess now he's a running back, which probably makes more sense.  There's not a lot of surprises on the line, other than Gallington didn't take the back-up center position and David Neill, who I think I forgot to mention on the offensive line, is the back-up center.

The position battles at the X WR and Z WR look delicious.

Watched OL quite a bit last week

Carpenter appeared to be able to handle Smith more effectively than Okafor. Some of you may need to forgive me for what I saw.

I noticed that too during the spring game.

Did not seet he spring game;

but could not help but notice the changes on the OL. I think I read where Waddle was hurt early, but do you think the OL is improved. In the high light videos it appears we look big and strong here. If that is the case, and we protect our QB, and the D is improved, maybe 2011 won’t be practice for 2012 afterall.

Can only say that the OL pretty much had their way with OUR defense

OUR defense could not even cover Nancy……just sayin

Certainly not black shirt material……deceptive speed…..much slower than they look.

Summer as

the #1 TE and #2 as the Y IR? Hmmm.

I hope that changes by the fall. He doesn’t have the stones. Tubs must be playing nice with Daddy now.

by oldguyred on Apr 1, 2011 7:49 AM CDT reply actions

This will change in the fall;

Tubby already has tabbed Amaro has his bus buddy and numero uno TE. Tubby has made several comments about how Amaro will sitting next to him on the bus.

I am sure he will have to earn the position, but for those of you who have not met the young man, Amaro is all that he is raved about. I know that the speed of the game from High School to college takes time to adjust, but he already was that far ahead of high school.

Summer will not see the light of day, and if he does, then we suck.

I haven't figured out...

why the little shit still has a scholarship, much less showing up anywhere on the 2-deep.

My gosh - you're right!

If he has three catches this year, his production skyrockets. That’s bound to get him all Big 12 (or whatever the conference is called now) honors. Maybe even All Amercican!

note to Aggies: that was sarcasm.

I hoe you're right.

I’m in San Antonio. The Amaro kid is a stud. Looking forward to his time as a Red Raider. BTW – who was the last great/really good Tight End we had?

by oldguyred on Apr 1, 2011 8:01 AM CDT reply actions

Me too. I saw Amaro plaby about 10 times over the past two years.

If he had not been injured his junior year, even with his stong Tech ties, I don’t think Amaro would be playing at Tech. This guy is a stud.

And I know this group is made up a lot of mensa members, but spelling is not a requirement. Otherwise, they would not let me play.

The correct answer to your question about the last great TE

Andre Tillman

by blackbeard on Apr 1, 2011 8:55 AM CDT up reply actions

Tillman was great.

That’s really reaching back into the old archives. Different kind of offense, hairstyles, beer prices, etc.

Mickey Peters was pretty good also.

Bristol alamoua was pretty decent untill he got into Leach’s doghouse for off field stuff.

This two deep is for the players who worked hard and made good.

It will be impacted by Fall camp as other talent arrives on campus…perhaps a name we do not know yet.

Main thing I see, and hope to project through Fall, is the LOS looks much better than last season at this time.

The backfield is good, kind of what I expected at RB. The Big H is nice !! We have some really fun possibilities with new arrivals for Fall. Ole number ten needs to get his game going if he wants to see much of the field.

I am not as high as I would like to be with the reciever corps. I like Swindall on the edge, Zouzalik back at H, and Torres at Y….the rest, I dunno.

Yep, Fehoko may find himself back at Mike or Sam for PT. I like Hubert’s name at Mike.

Secondary looks good…strong at safety and solid at corner…with lots of depth at the next level.

I am more concerned with the new-new on defense more than I am with depth this season.

Franks

should get the start once he comes back, he has the experience and was doing pretty good last year in spring and during the season before he got hurt.

Defense

I’m a little worried about Fehoko at the end but I don’t anticipate that happening by the fall. I’m not at all surprised about Sonier not making the depth chart. He’s a classic bump tackler that lacks the technique. I really like the secondary and I think it’s only going to get more competitive among those guys. If Scott Smith can work his way into the coaches good graces we’ll have a much better defense than last season. The LB position is an area we need the greatest help.

Offense is loaded. I’m not sure we could have a better group of athletes. Jace Amaro will be another weapon that the opposition will have to deal with. I’m really trying to be more positive about Neal Brown this season so I’m hoping he’s over his learning curve
and takes advantage of the talent he has to work with. This offense should have no problems moving the ball.

I'm right with you...

Fehoko – I think he’s a more natural fit at LB than DE, and I’d like to see Smith or Mackey here instead. However, I think the coverage responsibilities at LB in the 4-2-5 may preempt Fehoko going to LB, because he’s too slow.

DB – I, too, am excited about the defensive backfield (esp at safety). I’m glad Porter is playing CB instead of backing up Johnson at FS. He’s our best cover guy. I think Johnson will do fine at FS, because he won’t have to play much man coverage.

LB – The starters here may be underrated. I think we’ll probably be okay here if we can get decent bench contributions.

WR – Much more optimistic about this bunch than last year.

McRoy

Very surprised not to see McRoy anywhere on the 2-deep chart

by candyroll on Apr 1, 2011 8:46 AM CDT reply actions

I think these are just listed this way for upper classman sake. We have a buffet of running backs including Jeffers, Daniels and McRoy who will all get to play. We also Williams and 2 others coming in the fall who will probably redshirt.

Daniels is the

Only Freshman or RS Freshman listed on the 2 deep offense.

I though we might see Corker or Edwards listed.

by Red_Raided on Apr 1, 2011 11:27 AM CDT reply actions

Smith

I think Tubs needs to get over himself and let these youngsters play, especially Scott Smith. None of us really know what happened to land him in that deep well, but I would think he has done enough to warrent being reinstated…. Fehoko needs to be at a LB spot in the middle. Between he and Dees, that middle would be solid…. I don’t expect James’ name to be on the 2-deep come September; Corker should be pencilled in there instead of James at IR and Amaro will make her disappear at TE…. Once Kenny Williams steps onto the field in the Fall, that RB depth chart is really going to change; and McRoy will do a whole lot more that it looks like the coaches think he can, no matter where they place him…. It is very obvious this chart is incomplete. It should look a bunch better at the end of Summer.
