Recruiting on the South Plains | WR / ATH Reginald Davis

This is a big-time athlete for Texas Tech, and he's one of the four commits from the weekend of the Red-Black Spring Game. Davis has an offer list as impressive as anyone in the state and it should be noted that DE coach Sam McElroy gets the nod as the guy that is in charge of recruiting Davis. I think that's an outstanding fit of coach to possible recruit based on what we know about Davis. More on that later.

The Player Speaks: Run, don't walk to the article from Recruitcosm's Jesus Shuttleworth on Reginald. If you don't read it, you're not going to have an appreciation as to what type of human being Reginald is and what he's had to overcome. Because I love you, he's a bit, but you better go read the whole thing:
When Tenaha WR Reginald Davis was two years old his Mom died. Six years later, his Dad passed on as well. Eventually, he moved in with his Grandmother, who raised him until she passed away when he was 13.
She left him a trailer house and a broken down car that ran half the time, and he’s raised himself for the most part. Through all this, the kid has never been in trouble and will graduate near the top of his class. He wants to major in Engineering in college.
Davis has had a rough upbringing, but he's obviously made the most of his situation. McElroy is as honest as the day is long and it wouldn't surprise me that his personality resonates in that room with the Davis family. This isn't a comment about any of the other coaches, but McElroy's got an awesome reputation in the high school recruiting world and McElroy seems like a father-figure. I think McElroy is assigned the East Texas area, so he was probably recruiting Davis anyway, but from my perspective, he seems like a coach that is going to get to know you as a human being first and a football player second.
From LAJ's Don Williams' article about the Spring Game Four:
"Probably on our level the biggest difference between him and most of the guys he plays against is his speed," Terry Ward said. "He has a knack for getting to the football and making big plays. He’s hard to tackle when he wants to be. I think his biggest asset in college will be his size, his ability to jump and catch the football and his ability to make plays after he catches it."
Davis’ hometown is in East Texas, near the Louisiana border. The pledge from the farthest distance is Hallmon. Hallmon said he didn’t think when he got on a plane leaving Florida that he would come home a Red Raider — at least not so soon, anyway.
"I had no intentions of committing," he said. "I was really trying to wait for a while. I just got a gut feeling that I had a great fit for that school. I just love it up there. I want to be somewhere where I’m going to be happy, where I’m welcomed."
And if you think that Davis' coach is lying about the ability to jump. Just wait.
The Video: Video don't lie:

Scouting Report: First things first. The second video was probably shot by someone in Davis' family, but in that short 36 seconds, you can see Davis' ability to react, jump off the wrong foot, make a play, and starts getting down the field.
As far as the actual highlights, there is no question that Davis is the best player on his 1-A Tenaha football team and the opposing team. He's a spectacular athlete. There's quite a few highlights from Davis at quarterback, and like a lot of Texas Tech fans learned last year, this staff is not afraid to take players who play quarterback in high school, but project to a different position later. Davis could project to the secondary or to a receiver position, but he no matter what position he plays, this is a gifted athlete.
Reginald, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!

wow
A Scout 4 star that wants to be an Engineering major, I am deeply impressed by Mr. Davis and truly look forward to him coming to Tech.
I was an engineering major who wanted to be a Scout 4 star...got passed over.
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
Awesome kid
Anybody that overcomes odds like that has to be a superstar. I expect we’ll be hearing a great deal about this guy as he makes his way to Tech.

Terrific Kid and a Terrific Athlete
Texas Tech needs to hold on to this young man. He is special.
Reginald looks good
on the first video at 22 seconds that looks very much like a old Crabtree move.

Good looking athlete with a great sense of character from what I have read.
We like those kind of kids at TTU.

We do more with less;
Perfect fit for Texas Tech. Welcome.
Another Red Raider First Down.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
Are the other players in the highlight video
that bad or is this kid that good? Thats gotta be one of the more ridiculous highlight vids ive ever seen. When he steals the interception from the other team………he’s basically doing whatever he wants to do on every play with tremendous ease……playmaker of crabtree-like ability. What we’ve been missing the last couple years.
Welcome to Raiderland!
This is the type of character we need on our football team. Anyone else see many middle screen touchdowns in the years after his arrival?

What a find!
He can continue to wear that Double-T on the helmet. He really plays well with it there. Watching his running moves, he bares a resemblance to Ronnie Daniels. He uses his blocking to perfection and the teams he played against really misjudges his speed and are out of position to make plays. If he can get this type of play at Tech great things will happen. His throwing arm is Ok, but not great, so that will be a minimal part of his regiman while at Tech. Besides, Tech will have the best group of QBs on the planet so he won’t be needed as a passer. Offense or defense, this guy will excel.

Glad to see someone else noted the resemblance to Ronnie Daniels.
Could be a heck of a backfield in a couple of years.
wow
Any kid that will survive and thrive w/ those odds, will be a winner no matter what he does. I am so excited he will be a red raider no matter what he does on the field
This guy
has the best cuts of any highlight video I have seen in forever. So quick. At one point he does a 360 spin and doesn’t even slow down. Lots of TD’s for this guy at Tech.
