Texas Tech News Notes and Links | 10 Things
We're mixing things up this morning. These are the 10 things that I found this morning, please feel free to post your own in the comments.
1. Greenbaypressgazette.com | Green Bay Packers | Insiders Blog " Packers by position: Quarterbacks
Green Bay writers speculate that third string quarterback Graham Harrell could be the second string signal-caller after this year as Matt Flynn will be a free agent.
2. Tommy Tuberville shares life lessons, experiences with seminar students - The Daily Toreador: News and Tuberville shares with students his advice on sacrifice, leadership | Lubbock Online | Lubbock Avalanche-Journal
Texas Tech head football coach Tommy Tuberville talked to students about what it takes to sacrifice to get to where he is today. I honestly think that a lot of coaches have similar stories in that they were paid very little to join the club. Here's Tuberville:
"He advised students to find a career they love. ("If you don't like it, you're not going to be very good at it, because you're not going to spend the time.") He also told them to be willing to sacrifice. ("If you're going to be successful in something, make something happen, you're going to have to sacrifice.")
3. Big 12 and Fox Sports Media Group Announce Landmark Agreement - Big 12 Conference - Official Athletic Site and What the Big 12's new TV deal means - Big 12 Blog - ESPN and Dan Beebe, Big 12 hit paydirt with Fox Sports deal - Andy Staples - SI.com
I haven't had the time to really take a look at all of this, but this is the Big 12's second tier rights and it's for a lot more money to be split with fewer schools. Here's a bit from Staples' article:
Wednesday, the Big 12 agreed to a 13-year deal with Fox Sports for the league's second-tier media rights beginning in 2012. And games won't appear only on Fox's sometimes hard-to-find regional sports networks. They'll also appear on basic cable's FX, which is available in 98 million households. That's only a million fewer households than ESPN and ESPN2. (In case you don't know where FX is on your system, find it and watch Justified, the best show on television right now.) According to Sports Business Journal, that deal will pay the 10-member league $90 million annually. That's $30 million a year more than the first-tier deal with ESPN/ABC that runs through 2016. Who could have predicted such a windfall? Dan Beebe, that's who.
4. DISUNION - Opinionator - NYTimes.com
This was interesting to me and thought you might like it too. Here's the concept for the blog:
One-hundred-and-fifty years ago, Americans went to war with themselves. Disunion revisits and reconsiders America's most perilous period -- using contemporary accounts, diaries, images and historical assessments to follow the Civil War as it unfolded.
5. Six-Run Sixth Gives Red Raiders Midweek Sweep Over New Mexico - TEXAS TECH OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE
Nice to see a mid-week series win. Now, we need a series win in conference.
Five more things after the jump.
6. Amaro sets 26-5A record - San Antonio Express-News
MacArthur senior Jace Amaro broke a 23-year-old District 26-5A record with a shot put throw of 62 feet, 10 inches.
7. Nash, Tapsoba Sign National Letters Of Intent With Tech Hoops - TEXAS TECH OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE and Gillispie gets two signees from Tyler | Lubbock Online | Lubbock Avalanche-Journal
"There are two things that really standout about Jaron. He can handle the basketball like he is a point guard and that really gives him a chance at a great future. Secondly, we will have him for three years which is a unique situation coming from junior college."
"Kader is one of the most respectful young men I have ever met," remarked Gillispie. "He comes from a very unique family situation and is just an incredible person. As a student, he is just off the chart. Kader is tall, long, athletic and light on his feet. He led the league in shot blocks last year which is really impressive considering how competitive that conference is. He is still growing and improving and is eager to learn and really wants to be at Texas Tech."
8. The Art of the Cure by Josh Friedland - The Morning News
Want to cure your own pig jowls? I love The Morning News and thought this was pretty good.
9. Football Reporters Online | 2011 NFL DRAFT QB RANKINGS
It appears that Potts is ranked behind quarterbacks such as Jerrod Johnson, Ben Chappell, Mike Hartline and Josh Portis.
Potts comes from a pass happy offense at Texas Tech, so transition to a drop offense may be a challenge for him. Has a good arm and decent pocket presence.
10. Blair: Time in Lubbock contributed to win | Lubbock Online | Lubbock Avalanche-Journal
Blair credits Texas Tech and the Lubbock community for helping him become the person and coach that turned around the program at Texas A&M, taking it from the Big 12 Conference cellar when he took over in 2003 to national prominence.

And to clarify, the photo is from me searching for “texas tech” and this photo popped up. I thought it was funny to all of those folks together, especially Ty Murray.

#9 drives me absolutely insane
I understand why you’d be tempted to not necessarily rank Potts especially high as a draft prospect. He has issues with touch on short passes, accuracy on medium to long passes, is basically immobile in the pocket, has been known to make bad decisions with the ball, and will at times revert to bad mechanics and rely on his natural strength instead of proper footwork. Notice how I managed to do that without making an ass of myself by ranking a dozen “spread” QBs in front of Potts and then calling him a bad prospect because he comes from a spread offense? Drives me absolutely insane.
it's not all bad
I now have a new cured pig cheek recipe. Which is one more cured pig cheek recipe than I had before.

Fox deal
I still don’t particularly trust Beebe and I do think UT is calling the shots. That said, I gotta give him credit for securing such a huge contract from Fox. Hard to believe Fox will be paying significantly more for tier 2 games than ESPN/ABC will pay for tier 1 games.
Really like the point about EVERY B12 home game will now be televised. That is fantastic.
I’m still not sure how the other member schools will reconcile the UT/ESPN network. Specifically the financial advantages that come along with it. I think they typically get 99% of the players they want anyway in recruiting so I don’t see how the network makes a huge difference there.
Guess we all should embrace the conference as it stands. I can’t see anyone leaving with the new penalties that have been put in place.

Double Awesome
1) Score a solid recruiting win (even if on the 2nd effort)
2) Beat Lane Kiffin at his game — recruiting
He can't sign a second
NLI, so we have to play the waiting game all summer until he sits in a classroom.

Ahhhh
That makes sense. I thought he had to complete high school summer class to qualify. Thanks for clearing that up for me. As I stated on the post fo this, he will be a huge difference maker for several years. GUNS UP!

Cool link about the civil war….two notes:
1) I was in charleston last week and got the ft Sumter lowdown from a buddy…you have to visit charleston if you haven’t before.
2) good to see something from the nyt without a blatant agenda…I think.

Once a Red Raider, always a Red Raider
1 ….. I hope Harrell becomes a 2nd string and then the starting QB for a team in the NFL.
3 ….. I too think tu is calling the shots. Beebe is just Powers’ puppet.
4 ….. Thanks for posting this article about the Civil War. There was an article (editorial) that ran in the AAS. It talks about the political maneuvering done by Lincoln to make sure the South shot the first shot to gain the support of the Union states.

5 ….. I hope the Tech Baseball team does well in Austin this weekend. It would be nice to see an upset of tu.
6 ….. Amaro, what an athlete!!
9 ….. I think Potts will do well in the NFL.
10 …. Like I have said before, once a Red Raider always, a Red Raider. Gary Blair is such a class act. I am glad for his good fortune, which is a result of his good work ethics and his treating people with respect.

NUTS - Never Underestimate TEAM Strength
Harrell
Might be the only reason I can think of that I dont want a permenant NFL lockout/strike
Dont buy the Espn/Disney/ABC hype ! Playoffs are just spin to hide their agenda of owning our favorite sport.
Being a track lover
I was happily surprised and impressed with Amaro’s shot put effort, outstanding.
And a fan of the offense formerly known as the Tech ’Air Raid", I am hopeful for good look and good results from Graham Harrell.
And the Simmons tidbit is impressive news, should it come to pass.
Enjoyed all about pig jowls...there has to be something very wholesome in all that...
I just start 2 gallons of sauerkraut fermenting this week…4-5 more weeks to go…
And the house is begining to smell like a kraut factory….
