Texas Tech News Notes and Links | 9 Things

1.  Javares McRoy transferring from Florida to Tech | Red Raiders and Texas Tech adds four-star Florida early enrollee to 2011 recruiting class | College Sports Blog and Scout.com: Javares McRoy to Join Brother at Texas Tech | This was obviously the biggest news of the day yesterday.   For those of you who don't remember Javares, here's his and his brother, Ben's, DTN profile way back in December of 2010.

2.  Dan Law Field Renovations Update | Lubbock Online | Lubbock Avalanche-Journal | This is excellent news Watson details the what construction will start on May 23rd.  There's a lot to be don at Dan Law Field, but it's a step.

3.  New Masked Rider takes the reigns|myFOXlubbock | FOX 34 News KJTV Lubbock, Texas | Thanks to Christi Chadwell for representing the university and congrats to Bradley for being the new Masked Rider.  Bradley, now all you need to do is grow a mustache.

4.  Red Raiders Return to the Road at No. 19 Oklahoma State - TEXAS TECH OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE | The softball team has a tough two game series in facing the Cowboys.

5.  Texas Tech Falls in Series Opener at No. 4 Texas, 4-1 - TEXAS TECH OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE | Down in the series, 0-1.  Again, this is going to be incredibly tough to win, but Jungmann is UT's best starter, so maybe, just maybe, there's a chance.

6.  PROP 2011: New NCAA Football Rules, Same Institutional Stupidity - From Our Editors - SBNation.com | This does not sound good.

7.  Crossing paths with Texas Tech basketball recruit Ty Nurse | Lubbock Online | Lubbock Avalanche-Journal | Linehan reports that Ty Nurse, the point guard at Midland College last year, is visiting Texas Tech.  Linehan has an awfully confusing and round-about way of connecting the dots as to who he is and we don't really know anything else about him.  Google is your friend.  Let's see if I can help.  Nurse led Midland College to a 33-4 record this year, but he's not really a scoring guard.  And here's a bit about what type of player Nurse is, via Rivals:

Ty Nurse, PG, Midland- One of the most highly recruited point guards in the junior college ranks, the native of Vancouver, British Columbia was solid. He doesn't wow with athleticism or flash, but he takes care of the ball, gets his team into their offense and makes some shots when needed. He's also an excellent free throw shooter which is huge during crunch time. He reported offers from Nebraska, Creighton, Santa Clara, Rhode Island and Sam Houston State.

8.  Texas Tech Student-Athlete Spotlight: Reid Redman - Big 12 Conference - Official Athletic Site | Good profile about 3B Reid Redman.

9.  Your first Big 12 recruiting watch for 2012 - Big 12 Blog - ESPN | A comparison of which teams have top 150 ESPN candidates.

How good will 2012 be;

Texas and OU home games, Aggies should be one and out by then, and Brewer along with 2011 class will be haunting opponents. If the weather will cooperate, and we can get our 200 foot video board, we might be looking at BCS bid 2012. Sweet.

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.

Very impressed with Tubs

This program is heading in a great direction! The foundation is getting stronger day by day and I am looking forward to seeing the on field product. Billy G is doing the same in Bball. Tech has some very bright days ahead!

Excited

I am very excited about the quality of the recruits Texas Tech is getting LOIs from, as well as the “transfers”. It does help in some instances (Simmons & McRoy) that Tech already has a good friend or brother onboard, even if it initially doesn’t appear that way. I went back and viewed the McRoy highlights and they both are very fast. Javares does seem to have an extra gear that few have, even Ben, but they can both create a lot of havoc with their speed.

I like where Spencer is taking the baseball, but I sure hope he starts signing top pitching talent more often. Tech seems to always trail the top teams in pitching abilities and that needs to change for them to get better. The hitting has been good, but when they face good pitching, their own pitching just can’t keep them in the games enough times to help the team gain a win. The stadium upgrades could help attract better pitching, so that is comforting. In Tech’s loss to UT Friday, the Horns drew over 7000 fans. Tech is drawing only 3500 fans for conference games. Hopefully that will improve.

Courtney Linehan is given some good subjects to write about, but she falls short of actually completing her articles. Brain transfer is minimal with her and I really am not much of a fan for someone who just doesn’t seem to get IT. Of course, there have been other articles by other sports “analysts” on the AJ payroll that seem to be lacking in talent. Too often when I read one of the segments online I am left with a sense that it ends before it is finished, if that makes sense.

The NCAA has outlived its relevancy. Somehow, a lot of changes need to be made for that organization to regain the honor it should have. All they seem to do anymore is make complete fools of themselves by making and trying to enforce rules that are unrealistic. Someone at work mentioned the fact amateure (sp) athletics are not even close to where they used to be. Consider the number of professionals allowed to compete in the Olympics, where it was once completely non-professional. I know, there were countries, mainly Communist block countries, that actually used professional type athletes for years befor the US actually allowed professionals to compete. Anyhow, if the NCAA is to continue as a relevant guiding force for U.S.A. amateures, some changes seem required.

Four JR Pitchers lost to last years draft doesn’t help the situation nor does this years Friday night starter going down with Tommy John.

Yes, you are right about the losses,

but Tech must try to sign even more top-flight pitchers, just because of the chances some could leave or be injured. Spencewr was a great pitching coach for Oregon’s national Championship team, but he can’t be as envolved with the pitching at Tech. I do like his coaching and am hopeful Tech can make a move the last part of the season and get into the playoffs. The future will continue to brighten as Spencer and the rest of the sstaff have got the team going in the right direction. Please, just keep it up and win a bunch.

I like your words about pitching TTpilk

at some point I think you are asking for hitters as well.

I know many people do not like Don Williams over at LAJ, for me, whatever he fails to do that alienates fans, he is the most consistent at reporting solid football information about TTU’s program, coaches, and players…Ms Linham is not a sports reporter IMHO.

The McRoy transfer is cool

but the implications of the Simmons get are a lot more important to the program overall (assuming of course he makes it on campus, hope he got a good night’s sleep because Don Williams mentioned he’s taking the ACT this weekend). A huge part of why the 2008 team was nationally relevant was because of the starting defensive front 4: Brandon Williams, Colby Whitlock, Richard Jones, and McKinner Dixon. Starting in 2012 and into 2013 we have a real chance of putting together not just a starting unit, but an entire rotation that can outplay those guys, as good as they were.

Williams’ article actually mentioned that Simmons took the ACT last weekend.

Ball Game!!

Tech won 2-1. Got a little dicey in the 9th but they pulled it out.

Baseball: Tech beats UT 2 to 1

Last few moments of the 9th we almost lost it.

We let them get some hits. They scored one and then the bases were full. But Tech’s John Neely struck them out.

Good bats for Tech

Basketball recruiting !!!

We get a guard from the JC’s and not one comment ???

O.k. !! I do not like trying to build a Div 1 basketball program from JC’s as a principle. I have written at length about that positon…..

With a new coach, any new coach, I am going to sit back and see what he does with these guys as they come in and how they develop…that is the criteria…

Welcome to TTU, Ty Nurse, the Raider Nation hopes the very best success for you and for our basketball program.
