Recruiting on the South Plains | QB / ATH Keenon Ward

I'm losing track of the number of former high school quarterbacks are now on this roster (or hopefully will be soon) and you can add Snyder QB/ATH Keenon Ward to that list, as well as QB/ATH Reginald Davis. Austin Zouzalik, Cornelius Douglas, J.J. Gaines, Desimon Green, Cooper Washington and LaDarrin Robertson are all off the top of my head and I'm sure that there's someone else I'm forgetting. The theory being that a high school team's quarterback is probably best athlete. And Ward really isn't a slouch when it comes to being a productive quarterback, but I think that he's going to be looked at as an inside receiver and/or cornerback. Let's get to it.
The Measurables:

More good-strong, after the jump.
The Player Speaks: When Ward committed with the others after the Red-Black Spring Game, LAJ's Don Williams spoke with Ward and his high school coach:
"Tech was probably my first choice anyway," the Snyder standout said Monday. "I really wasn’t looking for anything else."
Snip.
"He’s an outstanding athlete," Snyder coach Chad Rogers said. "He’s got great lateral movement and very, very good speed. He threw the ball well for us. He has a real quick release and a real strong arm. He makes great grades, too, so he’s an all-around (prospect)."

Scouting Report: This really isn't fair, but consider that the Aggies received a commitment from 4-star QB/ATH Matt Davis. From all accounts, he's a terrific athlete, may not end up at quarterback, but he's got great measurables (6-2/200 -- 4.40 40-yard dash). Davis was injured all of last year, except for maybe 2 games. So how much difference is there between Davis and Ward? That's tough to say. Ward threw for 2,366 yards, 18 TD's and 13 INT's while rushing for 1,206 yards and 19 TD's. That's not bad, no matter how you dice it up, while Davis threw for 1,393 yards, 14 TD's, and 7 INT's and rushed for 1,427 yards and 22 TD's as a sophomore. That's impressive, but I just wonder how much difference there is between the two. Davis is in the Houston area, while Ward is in West Texas. Is it the 3 or 4 inches (247 Sports has ward at 5'11") and 20 pounds? I'm not a professional talent evaluator, but they seem to be comparable athletes in terms of production and Davis' commitment is headline news while Ward's commitment went with little fanfare.
I'm not sure what Ward will end up being, but he's bound to be, at the very least, a 3-star player, and by the time it's all said and done, I'd be a little surprised if he's not a 4-star player by the start of the season.
Keenon, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!

I agree
But at this stage of his career, he may be even better. Great speed, maneuverability and vision. Makes quick decisions on the run, and is accurate with his throws while running. Good accuracy throwing downfield. I don’t see a Tech QB ever running as much, but if they ever do, I nominate Ward to be the guy. He could open up all kinds of possibilities for the Tech offense. What is the word about his coverage skills as a DB? Can he play good D? Personally, I like what he offers on the offensive side of the ball, but as strong as we are in the skill areas, I am not sure he gets much playing time there. He sure could be a lot of fun to watch if he can get on the offensive side of the field in a game, though.

Seth you see that a lot with guys who produce at QB in high school
but don’t necessarily have the physical measurements to project well into D1 at the same position. Instead of grading them out as an all-around athlete (lord knows there aren’t a lot of 5’10-6’0 speedsters tearing shit up in college ball these days /sarc) they’ll get docked stars because they don’t look like Matt Stafford.
Outstanding
Perhaps a different sound track for the video. Great play maker. Welcome to Raider land.
Dont
know if im supposed to be impressed against 3A competition. Hard to measure playing speed @ that level. That looks like a hell of a fun offense to run for those kids though. Its what I do on college football on xbox. Mobile qb. Roll out on every play, look deep, if its not there take off and run for 20 yards.
You can find talent at any level.
Just because a kid didn’t grow up in a big town doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have big time talent. Look at Zach Thomas. If you watch these highlight videos, it’s obvious that this kid is miles ahead of the other. And even though he probably won’t have near the success old #54 did, he appears to have what it takes to take it to the next level.
Good Feet
At the very least, I think the kid has good speed, good stop and go ablility, great quickness. I love the fact he stays on his feet, not falling down at the end of each play.

Southpaw
Dont buy the Espn/Disney/ABC hype ! Playoffs are just spin to hide their agenda of owning our favorite sport.
I did not look at all the video, he does look like one of those guys who makes plays with his feet.
I doubt that he will play qb at TTU except in special situations.

Reginald David
is also a HS QB. I would fully expect within a year or two, we will have both of these guys and Ronnie Daniels (who was seen practicing wildcat this spring) in the Wildcat, with any of the three guys able to do any number of things)
Right-o, the wildcat is one of those situations I was thinking...
we have a number of guys who can do that now…it is nice to continue to find guys who can make plays.

recruiting speed
Seems to me that tubs is just stockpiling every fast athlete he can find regardless of position knowing he can use them somewhere eventually.

+1 this guy could be a very good slot receiver and could do very well on slip screens in the open field. You could also have him throw the ball some on that wr end around play that we run. Liked the block too and it would be nice to have wr or backs throw blocks down field like they used to a few years back.

Great Looking Athlete
Glad he’s coming to Texas Tech. Snyder is my mother’s hometown, so I always like to see kids from Snyder. My Mom knows some of the families (e.g. the Cumbies). My uncle was all state for Snyder in the forties! I suspect he was not as quick as Keenon, but I would bet money Keenon isn’t as tough or mean as my uncle. But I digress.
Welcome to Red Raiderland Keenon. Glad to have you! Guns up!
