Texas Tech News, Notes and Links | 12 Things

The photo is the rugby team of the hometown of Texas Tech discuss thrower, Julian Wruck (linked below).  This is all you get for the rest of the day and I hope everyone has a totally awesome Friday.

  1. Massive Tornado Hits Tuscaloosa - Roll 'Bama Roll and Tornadoes kill over 200 - The Big Picture - Boston.com | Pretty amazing how a sports blog can have such an impact on people keeping in touch, which means to me that no matter our differences, this is truly a community.  The Big Picture has some incredible photos of the aftermath from the tornadoes.
  2. Scout.com: The Bootleg's 2011 Graduation Rate Analysis | This is pretty amazing work, which is the graduation rates for the 6 big conferences in 2010 (I think this is for 2010, even though it's the 2011 edition of this report).  There's some good news and bad news.  The good news first, Texas Tech is second in the Big 12 in graduating their football players at 69%.  Texas and Oklahoma are at the bottom of the list.  Now, the bad news, which is that Texas Tech only graduated 44% of their men's basketball players, which is in the middle of the pack, but that means that less than half of last year's seniors didn't graduate?  Can that be right?  Here's some more bad news, Texas Tech's baseball program has the 3rd worst graduation rate in the nation at 41%.  And of the three major sports discussed here, football, men's basketball and baseball, Texas Tech is the second worst in the nation, a big part of that is because of the basketball and baseball programs.  I would love to hear that this report is inaccurate, perhaps a response from the university.  I think I find the graduation rate for the men's basketball team to be the most shocking.
  3. Red Raiders and Jayhawks Open Big 12 Series in Lubbock Friday - TEXAS TECH OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE and Red Raiders enter crucial set against KU Jayhawks - The Daily Toreador: Sports | If you have the time, go see the team this weekend and hope that they can win this series.  There are only 3 more conference series for this team to at win so if it's going to happen, it's got to happen now.
  4. Tech Advances with Win Over Iowa State - TEXAS TECH OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE | The Lady Raider tennis team advances.  Congrats!
  5. Linebacker Fundamentals: Zone Coverage - Shakin The Southland and Defensive Back Techniques: Cover 3 Pattern Read Examples - Shakin The Southland and Defensive Back Techniques: Cover 2 Pattern Read Examples - Shakin The Southland | Who wants some good strong football talk?  Do you?  Your're welcome.
  6. Shattered dreams fused together - The Daily Toreador: Sports and Tech Has Rough Start to Penn Relays - TEXAS TECH OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE and Brown, Mason give Texas Tech two of country's best hurdlers | Lubbock Online | Lubbock Avalanche-Journal and Tech track wraps up season in California and Pennsylvania meets - The Daily Toreador: Sports | The story from the DT was pretty good, it's about discuss thrower, Julian Wruck, who has the 2nd best throw in the nation and he's an Aussie.
  7. The All-Undrafted Team: The best draft-day snubs of the last 20 years, offensive edition - Dr. Saturday - NCAAF Blog - Yahoo! Sports | Blog friend remembers former Red Raider, Rylan Reed, as part of his all-undrafted team on offense.
  8. Big 12 Basketball Attendance by Percentage of Capacity - Big 12 Hoops | Good stuff from Evan at B12H, where he not only took the basketball attendance figures from this year, but he figured out which university was filling up their arenas in terms of percentage and not a surprise, Texas Tech only sold 56% of the seats in the USA, which is dead last in the conference.
  9. Introducing The 'NCAA Division I Bowl Licensing Task Force' - From Our Editors - SBNation.com | This news makes me go cross-eyed.
  10. 2011 NFL Draft Mock Draft: 2nd Round - Mocking The Draft | More draft stuff, and a mock draft of the second round!
  11. College hoops teams that could slip in 2011-12 - College Basketball - Rivals.com | The good news is that King things that Texas, Kansas and Kansas St. could drop off a bit next year.  So you're saying there's a chance?
  12. The Revolving Door: Texas Tech - Big 12 Blog - ESPN | Meh.  I think this is the hardest part of Ubben's job, which is to talk about each team better than the fanbases for each team.  It's okay, but I don't think it's anything you don't know.

Graduation Rates

It would be interesting to see how they calculated the total of all sports. Football has 85 scholarships but basketball only ~15 and not sure about baseball. Averaging percentages can be misleading. There is also no indication how they handle injuries. We had a couple of Basketball players that got injured and had extra years that may have affected when they graduated (if they did). Baseball also has folks leave for the minor leagues and the draft is also a factor. However any way you look at it a 67% grad rate is not a good reflection on our University.

Random Observations

Texas Tech football hasn’t been less nationally relevant since the Spike Dykes’ days. If Tech improves as much as Tuberville and Tech’s fans hope, it will come as a huge surprise to everyone but us.

Both baseball and basketball make going to school very difficult for Division 1 players. When I went to school and knew players from both programs, i couldn’t believe how difficult their sport made it on them to go to school, to pass classes and to graduate. Both Fall and Spring semesters required the sport and practice be first priority. The time commitment was enormous. There was no Spring semester to catch up, like football has.

Basketball in particular required an enormous amount of travel both semesters, which made school a second priority. Practice eight hours a day is almost mandated if you are going to excel as a Division 1 player. Very tough situation.

Baseball has many players go pro before graduation, which hurts the stats. Likewise, it has no off season any more. Games are played year round at the top level of play. Not conducive to graduating from college.

The delusion that players are going to make a living as professionals hurts these athletes more than football players for some reason.

Terrible Spring for tornadoes and fires this year. Drought is punishing. Time for a weather change.

yeah but...

Your reasoning re: baseball & basketball players would make sense if not for two things:
#1. Other schools do better than us
#2. Neither team is top tier
I don’t know if many of our baseball players are/get drafted so maybe the stat there that we’re 3rd worst in the nation is a product of baseball careers, but our hoops team only graduating 44% while being pretty awful in the conference is horrid. If we were ranked as badly in the conference but tops in grad rate or if we were best in the conference (on the court) but bad in terms of graduating, either would make sense. But being bad at both winning games AND graduating players is pathetic.

Re: “All-Undrafted” team, I’m honestly shocked that Welker isn’t on there, but I agree that Reed going nowhere re: the pros (unless it was by his choice) is mind-boggling. I know he had bad knees by the end of 2008, but he was an INCREDIBLE left tackle, and for as much ink as Harrell and Crabtree got, that season owed a LOT to Rylan Reed.

Prayers go out to those affected by the tornados

They are saying the tornado that hit Tuscaloosa was an F5. Those F5’s destroy and suck-up everything that is above and as deep as a foot deep in the ground. I know when the famous Jarrell, TX tornado hit. It not only took brick homes off their foundation it sucked the pipes out of the cement foundations. All of the plants and grass was gone. One of the buildings hit was an automobile shop. The gentleman that owned the shop had at least 8 full block engines and they never found any of them.

.

I agree with what others have mentioned in their posts.

Basketball and Baseball don’t have a down semester. The athletes are required to practice and play in both the Fall and Spring. I think they need to do for basketball what they do for baseball. Go pro after high school or minimum three years at college.

Hopefully with Coach Gillispie as the Basketball coach, Tech’s numbers will improve in that area.
Give Coach Spencer an improved ballpark and the amenities to help the players not only to practice and play but to study. And to stick around and want to play at Tech.

Picture #17 in the Big Picture -- the "safe room"

The “safe room” that saved that young couple and their toddler and baby.
They have Texas Tech Engineers to thank for creating something that can withstand the force of a F4 or F5 tornado.

My heart pours out love and prayers to all those affected by the storms

Having been working at Litton in Lubbock when the ‘70 tornado hit, I can understand what they are going through. My in-laws wer out of touch until the following morning, having taken refuge at Mrs. Bledsoe’s house on Broadway during the time the tornado was on the ground. They had just left my wife (we lived on 64th, near Akins Jr. High) and were headed home to their house on Ave. n, north of 4th street. Although their house was standing even though it was severely damaged, nothing across the street and northeasterly from them survived. We were fortunate they were not hurt or killed, as many in Lubbock were saved by gathering in one room of most homes, usually the only romm that remained afterward. The South will have a difficult time cleaning up, repairing what can be repaired and/or totally rebuilding. Many resources will be available, including, I am sure, a contingent from Lubbock. May God bless and take care of them all.
