Recruiting on the South Plains | DT J.J. Bynum

We all love defensive tackles and offensive linemen committing and after a string of skill position commits (Nicholas, Ward, Davis, and Hallmon) it was nice to get commitments from Vaitai this past weekend and now Texas Tech receives a commitment from A&M Consolidated defensive tackle, J.J. Bynum.
The Measurables:

More good-strong after the jump.
The Player Speaks: Good stuff from LAJ's Don Williams who talks to his head coach at A&M Consolidated about Bynum:
Bynum will play a 3-technique defensive tackle in a 4-2-5 defense that Raffield is installing. The former Cypress Falls head coach has had eight spring practices at A&M Consolidated, which he said was time enough to recognize Bynum is something special.
"He’s a tremendous leader," Raffield said. "He definitely has the support of the team. Whatever he says goes. He’s a great young man of character. It didn’t take me long to figure that out."
Raffield said Bynum, in addition to showing high character, is something of a character.
“If you ask him, he’s my new quarterback,” Raffield said. “He has a great personality. Y’all are going to love him.”
I didn't get that last quote, but I'm not very smart. Either way, sounds like Bynum is a good person and a good football player. Also, the 3-technique is lining up on the outside shoulder of either guard, so he's not going to be a nose tackle for his high school team and would guess that he plays the same spot while here at Texas Tech.
The Video: Film don't lie:
JJ Bynum 2010 Highlights (via AMCTigers)
Scouting Report: I hate highlight films where it appears that the opposing offensive line is just missing assignments. I'm guessing that you could attribute some of that to Bynum, but sometimes his opponent is just whiffing. Sometimes it doesn't give you a true idea as to how a player fights off an opposing offensive line or controls a gap, etc. In any event, there's a ton to like about Bynum, he appears to be strong (as some of you have already pointed out, Bynum deadlifts 600 and squats 715) and I like players that are strong in the lower half of their body as this typically goes ignored by a lot of players because you don't exactly show off your quads when trying to impress the ladies. I really like Bynum's quickness, he's not a lumbering 275 and I think he's really a terrific size for what Texas Tech wants to do along the defensive line. He looks like he could add some weight. Pretty good quickness off the line of scrimmage and he does show a swim move or two in fighting off the offensive lines that actually block him.
J.J., welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!
The 2012 Class: Still waiting on Rivals and ESPN before compiling a list.

well the experience thus far has been an awesome one. its a complete 180 from living on the plains of west texas to a tropical island. The school work is very challenging but is an excellent place to cut out the distractions of the real world and focus on your studying, which we all know can be difficult to do when The Jones is rocking on a Saturday night. The only thing that i really dislike is the quote “laid back” culture the locals have. Its actually more lazy than laid back (ex: Banks are open from 9-2 M-F and closed on Sat!?!)

Welcome to DTN CR;
We are expecting big things from you. Best darn site in Texas.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
Welcome to DTN and glad to have you along.

Welcome to DTN
I think you can be a great addition, with nothing but the “laziness” around you clouding your judgement. We are always looking for new views and expressions. Visit often, especially in the August thru February time period. WRECK ’EM, TECH!

It seems to me
He is quite the comedian, off the field. But, VERY serious on the field.

Im with you on the highlights deal, which is generally true especially of linemen. This guy shows such great movement especially laterally for that size I think we get a good idea of his ability.

Weight
There is a link in the other post about JJ showing him a a lifting competition. I have to say its very impressive and he looks like he could still add lots of weight to his frame, which is saying alot for a guy that is already 275 and squats 715

Prospect at Midland Christian
Hey KWash, have you seen the kid at MC? Not sure if TTU has sent him any letters yet, however, I know Oregon, Auburn, etc. have. Incredible talent and just a Sophomore this year. Can’t wait to watch him run this year.
I have no idea who you're talking about...
But now I really need to know. Details please!!
MC is right down the street from my house and it would be easy to report on.

Link to You Tube
Kids name is Christian Whigham. See the video I linked. Not much footage, however, there is one of his runs at the 55 mark that was pretty amazing. Of all the players I have ever seen, I honestly think he is the fastest kid on the field – not necessarily in a foot race, but pure football speed. He moves from veritcal to horizontal and vice versus quicker than anyone I have see. He’s got 2 more years at MC. You shoud go check him out. Don’t think you will be disappointed.
Thanks for the heads up.
I’ll be sure and check him out.

KWash;
I went back and looked at all the video on DT’s that were ranked hight than JJ, and there are several. Is it just me, or does this kid looked under rated in star power. Seth has educated us well. I think we can certainly measure the measurables.
I have a felling this kids star power ranking is going to rise now that he committed to Tech.
What a find Tubby.

Based off video,
he seems highly underated. Under the radar seems to be our specialty lately.

Obama Comment
whats the backlash of the obama comments doing to tubbs out there?? and yea this kid does look like a beast! Beefing up the OL & DL are IMO the biggest key to success, what happens in the trenches dictates how the play will go down
What is up with RaiderPower.com on this one?
They still haven’t added Bynum to Tech’s list of commitments, and don’t even show that he has been offered a scholarship. I guess they are too busy updating every little bit of news on the UT & A&M site to bother with what is going on with the Red Raiders.
Hey all, I got tied up this morning and ran out of time to do any links. May just take tomorrow off as well as I have Mother’s Day obligations too.
