Texas Tech Basketball and the Roster Shakedown
Amazingly, we've run through every position and despite me writing way too much about a basketball team that I don't think not as many people care about as I do, there's going to be a lot of turnover on this team and there will be some roster attrition. The purpose of this exercise is to try and figure out who its going to be on the roster based on reports, tweets, etc.

The strange thing is that there are a ton of players, more than the 13 allowed on a roster. Obviously, some of the players after the jump can be eliminated because they're walk-ons, but there's still a lot of options. Right now, here are the 21 players who have signed a letter of intent or agreed to be a preferred walk-on:
| POSITION | PLAYER | HEIGHT/WEIGHT | YEAR |
|---|---|---|---|
| PG | Mike Davis | 6-2/200 | Junior |
| PG | Javarez Willis | 5-11/171 | Sophomore |
| PG | Ty Nurse | 6-1/180 | Junior |
| PG | Kevin Wagner | 5-8/145 | Freshman |
| PG | Luke Adams | 5-9/--- | Freshman |
| PG | Pierre Hayden | 5-8/145 | Freshman |
| SG | Marshall Henderson | 6-2/160 | Sophomore |
| SG | Jamel Outler | 6-2/178 | Sophomore |
| SG | Toddrick Gotcher | 6-3/185 | Freshman |
| SF | Jaye Crockett | 6-7/200 | Sophomore |
| SF | Theron Jenkins | 6-6/215 | Senior |
| SF | Jaron Nash | 6-7/180 | Sophomore |
| SF | Terran Petteway | 6-5/200 | Freshman |
| PF | Jordan Tolbert | 6-7/225 | Freshman |
| PF | Hershey Robinson | 6-7/200 | Freshman |
| PF | Paul Cooper | 6-8/235 | Senior |
| PF | Clark Lammert | 6-8/--- | Freshman |
| PF | Zach Jones | 6-8/198 | Sophomore |
| PF/C | Daouda Soumaro | 6-10/220 | Freshman |
| C | Robert Lewandowski | 6-10/260 | Senior |
| C | Kader Tapsoba | 6-10/200 | Junior |
The thing we need to do here is remove the players that we know are walk-ons. Here are the walk-ons that I know are walk-ons (after the jump):
| POSITION | PLAYER | HEIGHT/WEIGHT | YEAR |
|---|---|---|---|
| PG | Luke Adams | 5-9/--- | Freshman |
| PG | Pierre Hayden | 5-8/145 | Freshman |
| PF | Clark Lammert | 6-8/--- | Freshman |
| PF | Zach Jones | 6-8/198 | Sophomore |
Now we're down to 17 players. That means, I think, that there are 4 players will not be on the roster that in a normal situation would have a scholarship available. Here's the 17 players:
| POSITION | PLAYER | HEIGHT/WEIGHT | YEAR |
|---|---|---|---|
| PG | Mike Davis | 6-2/200 | Junior |
| PG | Javarez Willis | 5-11/171 | Sophomore |
| PG | Ty Nurse | 6-1/180 | Junior |
| PG | Kevin Wagner | 5-8/145 | Freshman |
| SG | Marshall Henderson | 6-2/160 | Sophomore |
| SG | Jamel Outler | 6-2/178 | Sophomore |
| SG | Toddrick Gotcher | 6-3/185 | Freshman |
| SF | Jaye Crockett | 6-7/200 | Sophomore |
| SF | Theron Jenkins | 6-6/215 | Senior |
| SF | Jaron Nash | 6-7/180 | Sophomore |
| SF | Terran Petteway | 6-5/200 | Freshman |
| PF | Jordan Tolbert | 6-7/225 | Freshman |
| PF | Hershey Robinson | 6-7/200 | Freshman |
| PF | Paul Cooper | 6-8/235 | Senior |
| PF/C | Daouda Soumaoro | 6-10/220 | Freshman |
| C | Robert Lewandowski | 6-10/260 | Senior |
| C | Kader Tapsoba | 6-10/200 | Junior |
Here are the rumblings that we've heard about players and whether or not they'll be back or not. RRS.com's Chris Level tweeted that Paul Cooper was the most likely player not to return and move closer to home. Now we have word that SG Jamel Outler will be transferring from Texas Tech. Depending on your point of view, Outler wanted to leave on his own, or Gillispie told Outler that he no longer had a scholarship available. If these two things are true, then we're down to 15 players.
| POSITION | PLAYER | HEIGHT/WEIGHT | YEAR |
|---|---|---|---|
| PG | Mike Davis | 6-2/200 | Junior |
| PG | Javarez Willis | 5-11/171 | Sophomore |
| PG | Ty Nurse | 6-1/180 | Junior |
| PG | Kevin Wagner | 5-8/145 | Freshman |
| SG | Marshall Henderson | 6-2/160 | Sophomore |
| SG | Toddrick Gotcher | 6-3/185 | Freshman |
| SF | Jaye Crockett | 6-7/200 | Sophomore |
| SF | Theron Jenkins | 6-6/215 | Senior |
| SF | Jaron Nash | 6-7/180 | Sophomore |
| SF | Terran Petteway | 6-5/200 | Freshman |
| PF | Jordan Tolbert | 6-7/225 | Freshman |
| PF | Hershey Robinson | 6-7/200 | Freshman |
| PF/C | Daouda Soumaoro | 6-10/220 | Freshman |
| C | Robert Lewandowski | 6-10/260 | Senior |
| C | Kader Tapsoba | 6-10/200 | Junior |
When newest Texas Tech signee PF/C Daouda Soumaoro signed with Texas Tech (nothing is official just yet as there hasn't been an official press release), LAJ's Courtney Linehan, wrote that she thought that Soumaoro was likely to walk-on. Now, I don't know if that's based on the fact that Texas Tech is over the limit or that Linehan knows something about what's going on in terms of Soumaoro actually deciding that he would walk-on at Texas Tech for at least a year before a scholarship spot opens up (it would have to be Lewandowski or Jenkins). If this statement from Linehan is true, we're down to 14 players.
Finally, Chris Level tweeted the following:
I can confirm that a signee is headed to JC and a current player will transfer clearing a few spots on Billy Gillispie's #TexasTech roster.
The problem is that I'm not sure if Level is talking about Outler, as mentioned above, or another player. If I had to guess, I'm guessing it's Outler. The Level's other tidbit, which is that there is a signee is going to junior college. I think we can assume that the most recent signees, Soumaoro, Tapsoba, Nurse and Nash will all be here. I don't think that Gillispie would have spent his time on Soumaoro if he had not already qualified and the other three arrive at Texas Tech via JUCO and I don't think they're going back.
That means that it's one of the five freshmen. I can't imagine that Wagner is the player, as he just went through a ceremony with signing a letter of intent, although he signed his real letter of intent earlier in the year of 2011. I also don't think it's Gotcher or Petteway. Here's my proof for Petteway:
Everyone welcome Terran Petteway and family to Texas Tech! #RaiderPower http://yfrog.com/h733vtij
Make sure and click on the link for a picture. Good looking family and lots of cute kiddos. That's via Gillispie's newest Twitter handle. That means that it's down to either Tolbert or Robinson. Level did confirm on the radio on Friday of last week that the player transferring was Outler and the player who would be going to Tyler JC (the same junior college where Nash and Tapsoba just left) was Robrinson.
As along as Soumaoro is a walk-on, then the roster sits at 13 and you have your scholarship players and your walk-ons. Additionally, I thought that a guy like Theron Jenkins might be let go the same way that Cooper was let go and would guess that if Soumaoro is going to get a scholarship, that's probably it.

Tech Basketball
will be very popular in a year. Give Billiy Gillispie some time, and he will create some excitement. It won’t happen overnight, but soon.
My Roster...
Here is the 13 man roster I would want to see posted outside the locker room if we were back to the old days of try-outs and cuts:
PG Javarez Willis
PG Ty Nurse
PG Kevin Wagner
SG Marshall Henderson
SG Toddrick Gotcher
SF Jaye Crockett
SF Jaron Nash
SF Terran Petteway
PF Jordan Tolbert
PF Hershey Robinson
PF/C Daouda Soumaro
C Robert Lewandowski
C Kader Tapsoba
I think this would be the best formed team that we could hope for in terms of the most talented with the highest potential.

I wasn't overly impressed with Willis
grant that he was as freshmen but I didn’t see to much upside.

Good Stuff
Excellent write up. We really appreciate the info even when we don’t comment. This team will be one of the most athletic that Tech has had in quite some time.
glad to see juco talent being sent to TJC...
i started out my college life as an apache and the program that floyd wagstaff built there has endured. it’s good that our future red raiders will be getting steeped in some serious basketball tradition.
from the wiki:
Floyd Wagstaff (January 8, 1911 – February 5, 2000) was an American football and basketball coach. He coached Tyler Junior College from 1946–75 and served as athletic director until retiring in 1984. He led the Apaches to national basketball championships in 1949 and 1951, and a record 11 NJCAA national tournament appearances. Wagstaff compiled 734–221 record as Tyler basketball coach. He also was 130–36 as Tyler football coach.
Wagstaff is a member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and the Stephen F. Austin University Hall of Fame.
those players will be steeped in lots of history, especially history surrounding a national JUCO athletic powerhouse. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyler_Junior_College

Great post Seth!
This has been going on in my mind for quite a while now. I hope Level is correct, because that’s exactly how I invisioned the team. I wasn’t certain how it could come about though. Robinson going to TJC did it. That would allow Jenkins to play his final year. Robinson is a raw talent. I think Soumaoro should be redshirted, if it’s possible with a walk-on. He’s very raw also.
I must admit, I’m concerned that Willis can keep up the academic part of college basketball. He can be a very good player for Tech. If this turns out to be the TT team, they should be athletic and fun to watch mature. I wonder why there are so many walk-ons? I guess it can’t hurt the team to have them however.
With all of last years seniors gone, could this be addition by subtraction. Now others will have to step up.
There is no way Soumaoro is coming to TTU as a prefered walk on when he could have stayed close to home and gone to St. Johns. An article quoted him saying he signed with tech because he had a chance to play right away, so a redshirt should be out of the question. Cooper, Outler and Robinson are all gone. I really don’t think Davis will make a comeback after a second surgery, especially when wt and speed were his major issues. Although I hope it’s not true, but rumblings say Henderson is gone. Zach Jones will probably be gone and BCG will most likely add on two of his preferred walk on’s to the team.

Re. Soumaoro, yes, now that Level has confirmed (and as others have posted today – shoutout) that Henderson won’t be here, that means that there’s 13 scholarships available, which will include Soumaoro. I was trying to piece together the roster from what I had read from hear and there and based on what Linehan wrote, which I thought was hard to believe then, I had not seen any other rumor as to another scholarship opening up.
By my count, the 13 scholarship players are: 1) Davis; 2) Willis; 3) Nurse; 4) Wagner; 5) Gotcher; 6) Crockett; 7) Petteway; 8) Jenkins; 9) Nash; 10) Tolbert; 11) Soumaro; 12) Tapsoba; 13) Lewandowski.
Level also says that Gillispie is keeping the 4 walk-ons listed above. If Level is right, then this is it.
Go Raiders . . .
Double-T Nation
Henderson's gone.
I’m wondering if it could be due to his attitude on the court, and maybe even off. I now the Ute fans had a couple of words about this.
I’m really worried about our SG position. I’ve been big on Gotcher since he was a junior and I have faith that he will be solid. But, unless Terran is fast enough to play the 2, all is our other SG will be significantly smaller than 6 foot. By no means am I knocking on the little guy, but big 12 guards are typically huge.
