Recruiting on the South Plains | LB Micah Awe

Its not surprising that a camp in the DFW area would yield a handful of commitments and now Texas Tech has received yet another commitment from a linebacker, Mansfield Summit OLB Micah Awe. The neat thing about Awe is that he did a tremendous job of putting out plenty of video, so although I've only linked to three videos, there's quite a bit more out there. Let's get to it.

The Player Speaks: Scout.com's Greg Powers talked with Awe briefly:
"I just verbally committed to Texas Tech," exclaimed Awe!
Yep, that's all we got right now. If I can find anything else where Awe talks about his commitment, I'll update this post.
[Note by Seth C Update 2011-06-09 ] LAJ's Don Williams talked with Awe (pronounced AH-way) and talks a bit about Awe, who arrived here in the U.S. at the age of three and his mother has a graduate degree from Texas Tech. Awe talks a bit about his size or lack thereof:
“I’ve always wanted to have a big Division I school come get me,” he said. “I didn’t think it was going to be possible, because I’m undersized, but Texas Tech’s not worried about size or how big a player is. They’re recruiting for leadership and heart.”
Awe also talked about the one thing that I, and the rest of you noticed, which is that he's got great tackling technique and causes a lot of fumbles:
“I try to pride myself on technique,” Awe said, “and I’m physically blessed with sideline-to-sideline speed.”
[End Note]
With that being said, it appears that this is Awe's first offer. It's strange in that Awe finished last year with 116 tackles, 20 TFL and named to the first team 07-4A All-District team. According to Scout, Awe had no other offers and his Rivals profile also confirms this, although he was receiving interest from schools such as Baylor, Illinois, SMU, Houston and . . . TCU. I know what you're saying, not an overly impressive offer list, and you could say the same thing about LB Kris Williams, but at some point, you have to trust the coaching staff who saw Williams and Awe with their own eyes last weekend.
More after the jump.
The Video: As mentioned above, Awe has a handful of videos, in fact he has his own YouTube username (if you have time, you should check out Awe's attempt at satire / comedy with his CNN bit), but I'll post my favorite. Film don't lie:

Scouting Report: A couple of things stand out to me, the first being that Awe does a nice job of wrapping up and tackling. Seems to have really good form and quick recognition of the play. I also like how there are a bunch of highlights where Awe is making plays, lots of fumbles caused and lots of tackles for a loss. Yes, Awe seems to be a bit undersized, but I'm fine with that. And yesterday, I mentioned that I was a little concerned with Kris Williams 40-yard dash time and also mentioned that maybe I shouldn't be (Williams had a camp time of 4.85, but a Rivals time of 4.58). The reason I even mentioned it yesterday was because I think that Tuberville and Glasgow are obsessed with having speed at every position and Awe's commitment seems to fit that linebacker or safety position quite well. I know that straight-line speed is not indicative of football speed, but Awe did run a 24.14 in the 200m this spring, which is pretty fast for a guy his size.
I also found a bit from a website called Texas Prep Stars who saw Awe at a 7-on-7 Tournament this spring and thought that he was the best athlete on the field:
The most impressive athlete on the field was Summitt High Schools 2012 Class LB Micah Awe (Video). The 5'11' 210 Awe showed tremendous speed and cover ability. He handed us a tremendous video filled with ferocious hits and forced fumbles. After you see him work, his best position at the next level is probably an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense.
Micah, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!
The 2012 Class: Still waiting on Rivals grades. Boo!

There is premium info I can't spill
but rest assured, this kid is an athlete! It’s a huge pickup! To have that many tackles, you have to have technique, or massive speed, or both!
No Longer Premium!
“He went in to Texas Tech camp this weekend and after a solid performance where he ran a 4.52 forty-yard dash he was tendered an offer from the Red Raiders coaching staff. "

This guy closes quickly after reading the play and minimizes gain with solid hits, some explosive enough to cause fumbles. He looks like just the type needed in the 524 scheme being implemented by our new DC.

I don't know if he really hits that hard;
but it seems that he forces a fumble on almost every hit. He is all over the field and I can already see this guy chasing down QB’s who think they can run out of the pocket. Impressive young man. You made the right choice.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
Shock and Awe
Great looking prospect. I know we hope coaches can make good athletes into great players, but I truly believe that great hitters on the football field are born, not made. I think our Darwinian instinct makes normal people hesitant to sacrifice our bodies in the type of hitting in which extraodinary football players routinely engage.
Looking forward to the day when Tech has multiple hitters on defense who will light up or Slay the opposition. Guns up!
Are you saying we are looking at another linebacker name of Shock ???

Should legally change someones name.
Or at least give the our most likely leading tackler (assuming it’s not Awe) the nickname “Shock”. Politics aside, for anyone who is going down that road, it’s way too catchy to pass up.
Alas, turns out his name is pronounced "AH-way"
Shock and AH-way does not work for me…..

Good hitter
I was sold until you said he ran a 24 second 200. That does not indicate 4.5 40 times. Maybe he had a bad day though. Looks like a nice prospect. Recruit speed and the rest will take care of itself. The guy who said he can play OLB in a 3-4 is an f-ing idiot. No way he has the size for that.
