Leach on GAC

I am listening to an interview with Leach on GAC, 103.3 ESPN radio Dallas. Yes it is typical Leach, very entertaining. Talks about his new book, Adam James, his firing, what he thought about the 2009 season, his interview with Maryland and several other topics. If you have a chance check it out, it is well worth your time and you wont be disappointed! Wreck em!!! Guns up!!!  Has time stopped because season can't get here soon enough

I don't know what/who to believe.

Reading the sports coverage of the book makes me take Mike’s side. But I know every story has two sides. I think he got cheated for all the good he did for the team and school. He deserved to be paid alot of money. I also think it was about several things that happened over the years and not just about what Adam and his dad did. I lost respect for the James Gang. And I wish our leaders had handled it better, but you have to admit that Mike was hard to deal with when he got an idea in his mind. If they had all gotten along over the years, maybe he would not have gone looking at UW and MU. Then again, he is clever, and maybe he was shopping to get leverage for a big raise all along. I have to believe that he wishes he was still HC at Tech, but with a different set of bosses. Both sides were right, both sides were wrong, the James Gang was all wrong, but I still miss the ole Pirate, he was so much fun!

I like to say it was a three sided story with enough blame to go all the way around. But to say he deserved more money I have to disagree. He was using inflated stories of “interviews” for leverage and he wanted Stoops/Brown (NC winning coaches) money without ever winning a thing other than 1/3 of the south half of the division. Also the pure economics of the football program if he was worth more money then he couldve generated more money, in other words going further into the red for his contract. Simple economics

I do miss being the most exciting most unique football program in the country those times are lone gone

He wanted to be the 3rd best paid coach in the Big 12

He was the 3rd winningest coach in the Big 12. Sounds logical to me. And if he wasn’t generating enough revenue to justify it, why did they build luxury suites on the East side and add 7,000 seats in the north end zone? Tubs is making pretty much what Leach got in his last contract, so the money is obviously there to pay market value for a football coach. I just don’t get painting the victim as a villian in this affair. It’s easily fixed. Pay him what he is owed for coaching in 2009. Pay him the 800k contract completion bonus & issue a press release apologizing. Then it’s all over as far as Texas Tech is concerned.

There is a huge gap between 2nd and 3rd coaches in the XII, and lets say the agent wanted closer to 2 (stoops, I assume) than 3. And lets not forget that at the time there were two other guys that had also benn to BCS bowls (Pinkel, Mangino) and we had yet to even win a damm cotton bowl.

So because they added seats they were making money, not really the case, all of those things cost money. They were selling tickets and almost selling out every game. The suites were added but not generating any money until what? this season. Ticket sales are only a part of the revenue game. Ask Okie Lite and UT

So are you going to dontate the $$$ to cover the Atheletic Department shortfall when they release $1.4M to Mike Leach ? or maybe we can ask Tommy to not get paid for a couple of years.

Our TV revenue is going up about 15 million dollars under the new 3rd tier contract

And besides since when is pleading poverty a reasonable explanation for welshing on a contract?

Guess he could always sue for what he is owed, o wait, nevermind. Interesting how once he couldnt recover monetary damages he wasnt interested in clearing his name

If the

Point is that the school can’t afford it, perhaps mixing in a business ethics class would have been worthwhile…

My point was that during the contract negotiations ML wanted money that the school didnt have, the AD was stretched to the limits. Now you are all saying that the school should just write a check and pay the guy, but if the lawsuit is still under appeal there is a bit of leverage involved in holding the purse strings. Personally Im sure if any of you were sued you would just write a check and then wait and see if you should pay more or get a refund after the court decides.

The school had the money.

Pinkel and Mangino went to the BCS without having to face UT or OU during the regular season.

Apples and oranges.

He was asking to be paid the market value for a major college coach

If the people running Tech can’t manage a budget where they can afford to pay for major college sports teams they should give up and drop to Division II. No, Leach did nothing any other top 20 coach would have done in negotiating a new contract. Hance & Myers were too tiny minded to understand that to play with the big boys you must pay what the big boys pay. Just because Myers kept repeating over and over that the money wasn’t there doesn’t make it true. The money was there to expand the stadium & build the East side addition. Lack of imagination on the part of the good old boys club running Tech is what led to all this mess.

You need to check the news his agent was floating in December 08 and Jan 09, it wasnt until ML personally sat down that a reasonable contract was hammered out.

Non sequitur

on the comment….
1)It was when Hance got personally involved (and Gerald was bypassed)
2)Funny that you say a reasonable contract….and then we completely didn’t live up to our end of that fair contract

when that happened, Myers should have been forceably retired……or don’t re-sign mike.

Wow lots of univesities play “with the big boys” and have budget struggles its a fact of collegiate sports. There is only a handfull of colleges that have the luxuory of running a surplus and we are not one of them.

What's more important? Building a restaurant for Clup Corp or keeping the gravy train rolling?

It’s stampgate writ large. I wouldn’t trust the administration at Tech (before Kirby Hocutt arrived) to run a hot dog stand in the ghetto. Their priotities are so devoid of rational thought.

In your own words

don’t get it.

Ethics and the unscroupulus behavior of Kent Hance & co. are maybe not understandable to a devolving culture. People that grew up with the then West Texas ethic of ‘your word is your bond’ see back room conniving, as documented in the depositions/emails/Spaeth etc., show the Hance administration as unethical at best and their intended victim was Mike Leach.

Looking for a job to improve oneself, discussing with peers or potential employers to understand one’s marketability and the going wage for a given position, is a wise move in one’s career. Doing such causes no harm to one’s superior or employer, he/she/they are not blackballed if you find a better paying job elsewhere. Leach’s supposed forays in this realm have nothing in common with the crooked machinations of the Hance administration at Texas Tech. It is the latter that should be remembered as a blot on Tech history, not whether or not Mike Leach wanted to earn more for himself and his family after bringing Tech to it’s most exciting football ever.
