Around SBN: Yankees Deny Rumors That Team Is For Sale

DTN Daily Diatribe | Texas Tech News, Notes and Links | 2011-07-13

I'm incredibly behind this morning.  I had a half-day mediation yesterday and was spent after work yesterday.

LEACH STUFF
An exclusive excerpt from Mike Leach's book, Swing Your Sword - The Bonus - SI.com | Mike Leach Still Wants To Cut Adam James, Still Can't Stand ESPN - From Our Editors - SBNation.com | Leach excerpt: I was fired over contract, lawsuit - CBSSports.com | Mike Leach memoir: ‘My biggest regret was not cutting Adam James’ - Dr. Saturday - NCAAF Blog - Yahoo! Sports
Take your pick.  You can go to any of these links and find the excerpt from Mike Leach's new book, Swing Your Sword, but the SI.com link doesn't have any commentary, just part of the book.  The funny thing is that none of this is new information.  This has all been in the depositions for over a year (I think it's been a year since the depositions).  This stuff has been there and is of public record, but I'm guessing that a lot of folks, including the mainstream media, just hasn't paid attention.  You can go back to the archives from 2009 and 2010 to read everything that was written on DTN.

FOOTBALL
Meet The Two-Deep: Sam Fehoko - TEXAS TECH OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE
Texas Tech continues their series, and up today is LB Sam Fehoko.  I just hope he plays linebacker and not defensive end.

Edwards Named to Lombardi Watch List - TEXAS TECH OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE
Congrats to LG Lonnie Edwards for being named to yet another "watch list", the first being the Outland Trophy watch list!

Fans, It's In Your Hands! Vote Now! - TEXAS TECH OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE
This is pretty interesting and very 2.0 of Texas Tech.  Starting today through August 3rd, you can vote as to which home game will be the "blackout" game for Texas Tech.  I really like this idea and thought it was a good way to involve the fans.  Of course it's also a good way to get that social media thing working for Texas Tech, which I think is important.  Anyway, go to Texas Tech Athletics' Facebook page to vote.

Yahoo Sports: Rivals.com Ranking - Rivals.com Texas Preseason Top 100 2012
I really can't remember the last time that Texas Tech had 12 players in the Texas Top 100.  I didn't have time to go check the other years, but 12 seems like a lot of players.  Here they are:

#9 WR Dominique Wheeler
#21 DL Michael Starts
#27 WR Reginald Davis
#36 QB Clayton Nicholas
#38 OL Halapoulivaati Vaitai
#43 CB La'Darius Newbold
#49 OL Trey Keenan
#77 OL Christian Okafor
#83 LB Ryan Flannigan
#95 DL Anthony Smith
#98 WR Marcus Johnson
#100 OL Jared Kaster

One curious thing, Clayton Nicholas is the #36 player in Texas, yet he's only a 2-star player according to Scout.  I'm assuming that they just haven't seen Nicholas play because he lives in the hinterlands (Abilene), but just based off of Nicholas' stats alone, you think he'd be more highly rated.

One Foot Down - For Notre Dame Fighting Irish Fans
SB Nation has a new Notre Dame blog, go check it out.

Breaking It Down: Big 12 Receiver/Tight End Rankings - Crimson And Cream Machine
CACM thinks the Red Raiders have the #6 best receivers and tight ends this year.  I think this is accurate right now, although I'm not as big a fan of the Baylor receivers (despite the fact they burned the Texas Tech secondary last year), although I do really like Kendall Wright.  By the end of the season, I think with the addition of WR Marcus Kennard, TE Jace Amaro and WR Darrin Moore getting more time is going to make this unit much better.

Poll: How will the Red Raiders fare in 2011? Let your voice be heard | Texas Tech Red Raiders News - Sports News for Dallas, Texas - SportsDayDFW
The DMN wants you to vote on how Texas Tech will do this season, but they want to charge you a subscription to read what they write about them!  OMG!  Please, don't waste your time and vote.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Day One Notebook: Tony Woods ready to end process - CBSSports.com
Tony Woods is a very talented basketball player, but he was involved in an domestic incident while at Wake Forest, was supposedly going to transfer to Louisville now Texas Tech is on list short-list:

Parker said Kentucky, Texas, Cincinnati, Auburn, Texas Tech, Oregon and Xavier are the main schools in the mix, although other colleges have reached out.

I don't know how I feel about this and I don't recall off the top of my head what that domestic incident entailed.

TRACK & FIELD
12 for 12: Big 12's world beaters - San Antonio Express-News
Interesting, and very nice that Texas Tech's long-distance runner, Sally Kipyego, was noted as one of the best in the Big 12 for her accomplishments in track:

Sally Kipyego, Texas Tech: Nine-time national champion in cross country and track, tying Wisconsin's Suzy Favor-Hamilton for the NCAA record, but doing it in 2½ years compared to the four it took Favor-Hamilton.

12 does seem unusually high, but.....

I really like the fact that this, likely being a small class, has 7 of the top 50, that is the more unusual part I find… ratings are ratings, but these guys should excel at Tech. Keep up the good effort coaches…

It looks like a lion's share to me also....

If each Big12 team got an equal number, that would be 10, we have two that would have gone to someone else in that scenario.

We have 12% of the top 100.

We have 14% of the top 50.

According to the Rivals number, this class should rank pretty high with them.

I don't think we'll see Tony Woods at Tech.

He stated that he was concerned about location and good weather. His academics are poor, along with the incident you spoke of. I hope Gillispie doesn’t really want him.

As usual great stuff Seath;

I appreciate you keeping our paletes wet. I don’t know how you find all this stuff. At any rate, there is alot I could comment on toay, but I will focus on the top 100 and Billy G.

There is no question that our coaches are recruiting their asses off. I go back to what Neal Brown said in San Antonoio a few months ago at a banquet I attended. He said not to get our panties wet, but they have more suprises to come and we all would be really happy. This is not a quote, just my interpretation. Now, if our HC can just coach.

That is a real tough one on Tony Woods. I am a big Billy G fan and he was my first choice back in November before we started conference play. But if there is one kncok on Billy G, while at UTEP and aTm, he will recruit talented kids and to kick the program off, we might get a few attitute problems along with short term success. I for one would rather struggle and bring in great kids from the get go, but Billy G’s way has worked for him in the past. Just saying.

At any rate, I just have five short words today, “Glad to be a part of DTN.”

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.

Woods...

He was going to be starting center for Wake until…

"According to court documents, the 20-year-old 6 foot, 11 inch center from Rome, Ga., was arrested …. with three crimes: assault while inflicting serious injury, assault on a female and assault while inflicting serious injuries with a minor present.

Arrest warrants show that Woods kicked and pushed a woman who he lives with in the presence of his one-year-old child. The woman suffered a fractured spine, the warrant says."

I hope we don’t want that kind of person at our school.

Rush of emotions this morning

All fo the Leach media has me both remorseful and wanting to read the book ASAP. I’m pissed I can’t get it on my iPad this morning to get started in…here’s a little something that consoled me. Enjoy

Clayton Nicholas

I also think it’s odd that a guy who is a 4 star on espn and the top pro style qb in Texas on rivals would have a 2 star rating on scout

rpowel2,

Is von Miller still at A&M?? (I’m so sorry)

I like Patterson, alot!

Texas Tech Football Recruiting

to date is exceptional. High quality kids across the spectrum. I hope we hold on to who we have and get more of the same.

As much as i hate reading about domestic violence incidents, I’m also not able to judge the participants without seeing/hearing all of the evidence. Do we refuse to ever give a second chance to anyone involved in an incident of this type or some other type of incident (e.g. DUI)? Clearly, Texas Tech doesn’t have to give anyone a second chance. None of us have to give anyone a second chance. Fortunately, none of us has ever needed to receive a second chance either, right?

“Fortunately, none of us has ever needed to receive a second chance either, right?”…actually, not for anything illegal or violent, no…

Do you mean Willis?

Because Willis should have been fired for the performance of his defense last year. He didn’t need the personal drama to find himself out of a job.

Couldn't agree more,

but he was fired for beating his wife. How else do you explain his firing days before the bowl game? Tuberville did say what a fine guy he was after he was fired.

Vote

The official site wants us to vote on a blackout game. Every game should be a redout or blackout game, alternating throughout the year. I wear Tech colors to work in Austin each Friday throughout the whole year. People-Horn fans specifically- have begun accepting this and I receive less bull than I got when I started doing this a few years ago. That is my suggestion: All of us at DTN should wear the colors every Friday, especially during the football season. Let everyone know we are Red Raiders!

Completely agree with you

I do the same here in College Station. I got a little flak for it at the beginning and now if I miss a Friday, I tend to get more from my co-workers.

Funny thought...

A buddy invited me to go with him to the Ctt fantasy camp next week in the hub….he is going but I will be in Hilton head for 2 weeks, but would have gone.
I will give a review from his time, but it will be glowing as he is friends w all the coaches.
Would be interesting to fund Blackbeard, kwash and SARR there….good lord that would be interesting.

Rolled over the EDSBS

Spencer Hall (SBNation writer) is spending time with Leach on his boat. The Coach actually looks like he has been working out a bit. Or Florida living is treating him right.

3 things
  1. - Congrats to Sally K. She is without question one of the greatest student athletes our University has produced. What an incredible career.
  1. - I hope BCG and other Tech coaches place as much emphasis on class, respect, humility, and willingness to serve as an ambassador to TECH as Sally has done. I hope Woods is a changed man regardless if he suits up for us. Everyone, especially young adults, can benefit from a second chance. On a side note, we’ve offered 6’9" PF Connor Lammert a bball scholarship and believe me when I say dude can ball.
  1. Can’t freakin wait to read Leach’s book. I know the past is behind us, and I honestly think Tubs will take us places we never dreamed of… But Leach got such an unfair shake from everything. Everyone deserves to have their story heard. I have a feeling Tech did a sloppy half ass job in handling Leach. What can I say… I still got mad love for the mad scientist.

See his high school team picture here:

He is a Junior, his brother Clark is a senior and is 6’8" tall. We may be able to get a two-fer here by adding a brother combo.

Leach

I hope to purchase Leach’s book soon. I do not usually go out and buy a book, especially one on sports, as they are usually pretty benign. But this one, I think, is going to be very pleasurable to read. Of course, when I get to the part about his dismissal from Tech I will probably be sad from being reminded of the most rediculous point in Texas Tech history, where our most imperfect admin successfully pulled one of the biggest scams ever in college sports history. But the rest of the book should lighten the mood and help me to also remember all the things we Red Raiders were so enthralled with concerning The Pirate. If the courts have any remaining decency (it sure has not shown any so far) they will rule in Leach’s favor. I don’t care if it hurts Tech. No school should be allowed to do what they did and if this needs to happen to ensure that, then so be it.
