Texas Tech’s Neal Brown-FREE podcast | Williams and Hyatt On Demand | Texas Tech Offensive Coordinator Neal Brown Talks about the State of the Red Raider Offense on the Williams & Hyatt Show [AUDIO] - SportsRadio 1340 The Fan
You can listen to the audio at either link, but it's good stuff from offensive coordinator Neal Brown, who sounds cautiously optimistic about the offense, really likes that QB Seth Doege makes quick decisions and also thinks that he won't get the same production from just one player to replace what WR Lyle Leong and WR Detron Lewis did, but a combination of players, which is what I think most of us thought would happen.

For Tuberville, speed must kill at Texas Tech | National Football Post
Good stuff from NFP's Dave Miller, who has this to say about defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow:

New coordinator Chad Glasgow has arrived from TCU, where he coached the safeties since 2001 and was instrumental in helping oversee a defense that has been as stellar as any in the nation under head coach Gary Patterson. Seven starters return to a unit that was very susceptible to the big play in 2010 — the most generous defense in the Big 12. Injuries did play a role, specifically in the secondary, but the defensive backfield could end up being a strength of the defense if Cody Davis, who is the team’s leading returning tackler, and D.J. Johnson remain healthy and pick up the new 4-2-5 scheme — the same defense that Glasgow helped run in Fort Worth.

At the heart of the Horned Frogs’ success on defense over the last decade has been a consistently good pass rush. Tuberville and his staff wanted the Red Raiders to be stouter along the line, so ends Kerry Hyder and Donald Langley were moved inside this spring. Meanwhile, the hope is that Sam Fehoko and Dartwan Bush could prove to be speedier options off the edge while their youthful linemates get acclimated to the system.

Good read today.

Big 12 position rankings -- Cornerbacks - Big 12 Blog - ESPN
The Ubbenator ranks the cornerbacks and to my surprise, despite having the worst pass defense in the Big 12, ranks the Texas Tech cornerbacks 6th in the conference, saying that he thinks CB Tre' Porter and CB Derrick Mays have some potential (I agree) and could be higher by the end of the year.  That sounds about right.

Breaking It Down: Big 12 Running Back Position Rankings - Crimson And Cream Machine
CACM ranks the Texas Tech running backs at 6th in the conference, which I think is a little low, but to be honest, I don't know enough about what the rest of the Big 12 returns at running backs (I'm still working on educating myself) If I'm looking at the stats correctly, Stephens is the 3rd best returning rusher in the Big 12 (there were a ton of senior running backs last year).

A quick little mention of Tuberville down the middle of the article, that says that last week at the Manning Passing Academy Tuberville roomed with former Wisconsin head coach (now AD) Barry Alvarez and ESPN talking head John Gruden.  Gruden and Tuberville both have kids attending the academy.

LEACH STUFF
SPORTSbyBROOKS " Bruce Feldman Suspended Indefinitely By ESPN | ESPN Suspends Bruce Feldman Indefinitely, Apparently Over Mike Leach Book - SBNation.com
You all have already posted FanShots (here and here).  This is just sad.  Bruce Feldman is a writer for ESPN who asked and received permission from ESPN to participate in Mike Leach's new book, Swing Your Sword.  See the SbB link for details on that.  I mentioned this on Tuesday (I think it was Tuesday), but all of these emails have been out there before.  The thing I don't remember in the depositions was the information that Joe Schad and Craig James talked, but it's not difficult to think that they did considering how Schad's reports mirrored James' version of the events.

If you're a Twitter person, you can use the hash-tag #freebruce or perhaps Bruce should just drop ESPN entirely and join SB Nation, #brucetosbnation.  I don't know how this plays out, and honestly, I'd be fine with Feldman not working for ESPN any more, that way I'd be able to read his articles since I don't pay to read stuff on the internet, including ESPN Insider.  If he got a gig somewhere else, I'd probably be able to read them for free.

I posted the SB Nation link so that you could follow just one place for an update on any news. #thesbnationstorystreamisawesome.

[Note by Seth C, 07/15/11 6:37 AM CDT ] I thought about this a bit more and wanted to make clear that right now, ESPN has not said why they've suspended Feldman, but most folks are assuming that it is because of his book with Leach.  Nevertheless, it's going to be really interesting to see how ESPN reacts and if they release a statement today as to Feldman's suspension.

Re West Texas Top 10

E. J. Holub’s career began with the Dallas Texans not Cowboys. He moved with them to KC and became a Chief. As I recall, E. J. was the Chief’s first pick but the Cowboy’s second behind Bob Lilly. I remember a photograph of a billboard outside the Texans’ offices that read something like “We got ‘The Beast.’ Nuff said.”

Yo!

I caught that as well. Emil J. “The Beast” Holub was and is my favorite football player of all time. If his knees could have held up he would have easily had one of the most extraordinary pro careers ever. Even with all those operations, he was still an all-star caliber player.

We may have the next coming of Donny Anderson in the Daniels kid. At least, on the football field. Very impressive so far. Hopefully all he did during the Fall will continue throughout his Tech years and beyond.

Feldman may consider switching networks so he can be more honest, without getting railroaded for doing so.

It seems many previews of this season has Tech positions rated about 6th across the board. I am expecting much better results than that would translate to, and the Ags and Horns will not fair as well as the media types expect.

Congratulations to Neely. He should be able to add to his stardom the coming year. Great player.

It gets better - Now ESPN says he was never suspended... But he may resume his duties immediately

If he was never suspended why did his Twitter account go silent & no new updates under his name? And why would he need to “resume” anything if there was no suspension in the first place:

ESPN: No worries, we’ll just pretend it never happened.
CJ: Damnit, I just tweeted how surprised I was to find out we … (cough) I mean ESPN terminated my good friend Bruce
ESPN: Who gave you permission to tweet? Your Fi….. damnit.
Spaeth: Your both gonna have to start writing bigger checks… MUCH bigger

WT top 10

Roy Williams – Really were going to consider that guy
Cedric “mini Ricky” Benson- not really what I would consider WT work ethic

Hey Tubs this is the Wild West, Good guys wear white, were the Red Raiders we wear BLACK. ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Dont buy the Espn/Disney/ABC hype ! Playoffs are just spin to hide their agenda of owning our favorite sport.

I'm going to stop you there...

Benson had a lot of work ethic. I don’t know about Big Roy, but Benson had a lot. You can’t stay on top for that long and not have the work ethic of a mad man.

Trust me, I know.

I just read SBN's Leach article

There is a link to a past story written by Feldman before Harrell’s frosh season. Most of the people in Lubbock adopted Leach and all of his quirky ways, but the AD and his friends on the BoR did not. No matter what Leach did, even if he won a national title, they were going to eventually let him go. The way they went about it and the dispicable way they finalized it will forever leave them all with black eyes. Near the beginning of the article it is mentioned about how happy everyone was on the team and that Leach was receptive at all times to everyone. Somehow, even though Tech is moving forward and we are all expecting great things in the near future, I just can’t see everyone being that kind of happy. I certainly can’t envision anyone being able to approach Tubs at any time without first making an appointment. So, while we are doing well, the amazing atmosphere once prevalent around Tech football is no longer there. I know some people are very happy with the way everything is now, but thanks to some aweful leadership we will never be able to see such an atmosphere at Tech football again. Even though I was not inside and was able to feelo that, I will miss the feeling because I could see it in the players, until Lady James made her unauthorized entrance into a dark place, of course.

Both Sides had faults

If both sides would have worked toward the middle it would have been better. I think the admin could have worked with Mike a bit better and been honest about not being able to pay him as much. Also, if Mike would have did a little more donor activities etc. it would have been a good compromise. I think in the end both sides were getting a little big for their britches instead of working together. But what’s done is done and I am really liking the directions of Tech athletics in general. Great AD, Awesome football coach (who has been awesome as the ambassador for the team; honesty been in public a lot more than Mike; plus much better recruiting), and a awesome Bball coach. Great days ahead to build on what Leach started.

Somebody hacked Craig James Wikipedia page yesterday

It read:

“James was a part of the SMU teams that were found to have committed numerous NCAA violations, including receiving large sums of money from school boosters, which led to the enforcement of a "death penalty" (which shares a name with the punishment often given to people who commit multiple homicides in Texas) upon the school by the NCAA,3 although James himself was never accused of any wrongdoing except for the murder of five prostitutes. Indeed, James almost didn’t sign with SMU due to concerns about the program’s reputation due to the rumors that circulated over the signing of Erik Dickerson.”

It's a fact!

(our underground grass roots movement to counter the Spaeth slander attacks on Leach can be just as effective. And no one has to pay a PR firm, we can more than match their weak ass pseudoname campaigns)
