Things I'm Excited to See | The Offense

With the start of the season right around the corner, I'm excited about a number of things heading into the season and I oftentimes think about what I'm most excited to see this year. These are the things I'm excited to see this year and absolutely will love to see what you're excited to see. The topics that I'll cover are the offense in general, the defense in general, the special teams, the newcomers and the veterans.

A Dominating Offensive Line

It's not even close for me and it's a cliche to even say, but it all starts up front and that's especially true for the 2011 team. A new quarterback and new outside receivers means that the offensive line has to carry the load. I'm excited to see how the offensive line has improved from last year, which looked awkward and inconsistent at times, has improved. I'm excited to see how Matt Moore is able to improve this group. Moore has always been well thought of as a position coach and when he was retained last year, I thought that this was incredibly important. Offensive coordinator Neal Brown, in part, changed how the team blocked on certain plays, from a man blocking scheme to sometimes utilizing a zone blocking scheme made the offensive line look a little disjointed last year. Given the fact that Moore has had a year to work with the players to teach either method makes me think that you are about to see one of the more dominating offensive lines in the Big 12. Moore won't allow for anything else.  And he's got a veteran line to start with, seniors C Justin Keown, LG Lonnie Edwards and RT Mickey Okafor anchor a group that also includes players like LT LaAdrian Waddle, LT Terry McDaniel, RG Deveric Gallington, RG Beau Carpenter and LG James Polk.

Doege Stretching the Offense

Earlier in the spring, QB Seth Doege mentioned that he felt that the offense needed to attack the field more and that they need more explosive plays. I wish I could find the quote from QB Seth Doege, but his quote essentially mirrored offensive coordinator Neal Brown's thoughts on what he thinks is the most important statistic:

"Turnovers would be my first answer. But you also have to look at explosive plays and negative plays. Our goal is to minimize negative plays and get as many explosive plays as you can. An explosive run is anything over 12 yards. An explosive screen is 12 yards. An explosive pass is anything over 16. If I want to know if a team is well-coached, they have very few negative plays and a lot of explosive plays."

More after the jump.

Star-divide

I also wish I could find the number of plays that were over 12 or 16 yards or compare and contrast the passing plays from prior years to this past year, but at the very least, I appreciate Brown and Doege acknowledging that the offense needs to be more explosive and stretch the field. Unfortunately, seeing this year's version of the offense, it seemed to lack a bit of umph or pizzaz and I think a big part of this was the down the field passing. To acknowledge that the offense needs to work the edges and start breaking bigger chunks of yards is something I excited to see if Brown and Doege can and will do. The biggest question about Doege will be if he has the arm to get the ball down the field and personally, I'm not too concerned about that. This offense doesn't require that a quarterback absolutely chunk the ball down the field, but it does require the quarterback to utilize the sidelines and the outside receivers a bit better.

Skill Positions Stepping Up

Opportunity. The outside receivers have plenty of opportunity this year and I'm excited to see which players decide to step up their game and make something of their opportunity. WR Darrin Moore has received a ton of praise during the spring for possibly being the next big outside reciever for this team. Moore is a junior college commit that committed in August of last year after playing a couple of years at Blinn College (and played with Cam Newton) after starting his career with UTEP. Moore has great size, at 6-4/212, to be the outside receiver this team needs. Last year, Moore finished with 15 catches for 115 yards and 1 touchdown. The other receiving newcomer, relatively speaking, that I'm excited to see is Marcus Kennard, a 2011 commit from Butler County, CC. Kennard is another guy with good size, 6-4/205, who really stretched the field for his Butler CCC team where he caught 43 passes for 876 yards and 13 touchdowns. That's over 20 yards per catch and that's exactly what this team needs. A homerun threat that can open things up all over the field.

There are also guys that have been behind Leong and Lewis and now is their time to shine. This is a make-or-break season for WR Eric Ward. Ward was a legitimate 4-star receiver coming out of high school and it was thought that he would play early and often. It just hasn't clicked for Ward. He hasn't found a way onto the field, but during the spring he was listed as the starter at the x-receiver position with Kennard behind him. Also opening up are opportunities for Tramain Swindall (33 catches | 271 yards | 1 TD), Jacoby Franks (25 catches | 254 yards | 0 TD), Aaron Fisher (1 catch | 9 yards | 0 TD), Cornelius Douglas (20 catches | 215 yards | 1 TD) as none of these players are starting at their positions, with Swindall and Franks being seniors.

Now it's your turn.  Tell me what you're excited to see on offense this year.

First!

…and I have a question for you. Do you think that OC Simon the Drawring Kid will work more planned roll outs to take advantage of Doege’s mobility or will they play it on the safe side of his knees. ;)

From what I understand

He’s knees are fine. I would expect to see more Pistola and TE sets. Jace Amaro is going to help alot!

Say this again and again...

It all starts up front! Right on Seth, the switch to zone blocking cause some confusion we have got to figure out this year. Not sure I understand the zone rationale, we were tearing it up in the man scheme when our technique was solid.

I think that your 1st "like to see" is the answer to your second two "like to sees".

And I agree with you. The line should be much better. They showed great improvement as the season progressed. If they do have it down this year I would expect that you will see the field stretched and the skill players looking very good. A big part of last year’s frustration was a result of the line not quite being in sync and as a result plays could not develop as intended. This could be fun.

Also can’t wait to see how the new D works out. Expecting some improvement, but can’t wait to see how much improvement. This has potential to be a lot of fun as well.

Donnie Carona. With his leg strength, if he can just get his mental game straightened out I can see how it has the potential to leadTech to another win or two if we have some dogfights this year. Heck, even without his leg strength – if the coaches were confident he would nail them at mid range and even (as I do a quick sign of the cross on my chest) short ranges, it would change aspects of our coaching strategy enormously.

Also – how much will the new recruits contribute? Can’t wait to see how/if the new recruits contribute this year.

by Dunka on Jul 20, 2011 11:26 AM CDT reply actions

Donnie Carona is the one player keeping me up nights

He missed nearly half his extra points to start the 2008 season. You don’t pull a kid out of the stands & make hime the starting kicker unless you’re desperate. I can live with him missing field goals beyond a certain range. But extra points must be automatic.

nailed it

I’m very optimistic about most areas of this years raider football team.

Kicking,,,,not so much. Surely Tech can find someone for extra points. Let Corona try from the 30 yard line or farther.
My other area of concern is Stephens ability to secure the football in critical areas of the field.

by Tn Raider on Jul 20, 2011 5:48 PM CDT up reply actions

This is easy, so we'll keep it simple.

They have been talking the talk, lately, and seemingly walking the walk in preparing for the coming season.

I am excited to see: All the talk walked on the field. I still have big doubts, but you cant argue as much with the results.

Offense

I don’t see why we cant be one of the top 5 passing teams and top 10 total Offense teams this year.

by RRaider5355 on Jul 20, 2011 12:04 PM CDT reply actions

With Swindall and Franks being seniors...

and both of them having quite a bit of productive game experience, it is exciting to see that younger players beat them out of the starting spots. That indicates that the starters are REALLY good … and that’s exciting. Add the expectation that the o-line will give the receivers one more second to get separation, and it gets even more exciting.

by Colonel 71 on Jul 20, 2011 12:28 PM CDT reply actions

Kennard

Read the “Pre-Snap Read” take on the Red Raiders, and I don’t remember Marcus Kennard having a foot injury slow him down in the Spring. Is this serious or soemthing that could prevent him from being the home-run hitter this year? I see Ward and Moore being able to fill the role, but I think Kennard can be the “explosive 16+ yard” WR for us.

OMG Neal Brown looks just like Simon drawring drawrings. I’m LMFAO.

by rpowel2 on Jul 20, 2011 1:19 PM CDT reply actions

NB

NB said he was confident with the O line being the strong spot on the offense but has questions as to how the well the receivers would be. With the depth they always have at the receiver position i am confident someone will step up and be a superstar. If not there are 4 really good targets and It would be great if all 4 could share the catches. It all depends on how Doege distributes the ball and not be a one read QB. But I strongly believe we will have a top 10 offense as long as NB calls good plays because he is gonna have a ton of play options with a better running game, Tight end and the Pistola.

Whoever said, 'It's not whether you win or lose that counts,' probably lost.

by Techcuz on Jul 20, 2011 2:32 PM CDT reply actions

What i would love to see

Would love to see Tubb/NB keep the offense wide open the whole game and not run the clock out…. I will not be holding my breath though.

Where's the Love?

Hey Seth,

Where’s the love for Torres and Zouzalik? I think these guys should also be in the mix. The exciting thing is that the passing offense does not depend on just 2 or 3 guys who catch the ball. There are 8-10 solid choices, including Amaro…who was also not mentioned.

by candyroll on Jul 20, 2011 3:29 PM CDT reply actions

Those guys are proven and are already expected to play well.
Its the others that need to STEP UP!

Not excited to see the NASCAR offense again

Last season this was all the preseason hype, turned out to be hurry up and punt. I have not heard it mentioned yet this summer so hopefully it is DRT- dead right there.

Wasn’t that bad was it? Still was 10th in the nation in total offense. It wasn’t as good as previous years, but it want that bad. The defense was atrocious.

Agree and add....

.. that if the D had been better, the offensive numbers would rise proportionately. If the D had been ranked 75th – the offense would likely have been top 5 in overall production.

by Dunka on Jul 20, 2011 9:09 PM CDT up reply actions

More Offense Time of Possession

may have led to a better overall defense. Well, more rested anyway…

Throw first and ask questions later.

by RonnieB on Jul 21, 2011 10:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Correct

The offense was pretty good. But, consider the number of possible yards lost because the ball was NOT delivered at the best point possible to ensure YAC was optimized. I think Tech lost out on a bunce of yards and scores due to that one small significant reason. I personally expect Doege, Karem or Young to be able to get the ball to that special spot this year. As a result, we will see more YAC this year, resulting in those desired explosive plays Doege & NB mentioned. As good a year as Potts had, the fact is that he was just so-so in optimization on every play. With improvement in that area, plus an expected improvement in the run (because of better passing) and defense (because of better coaching, alignment & players) we could be seeing that special year happen this season, as well as next year.

Size and Speed

It seems like we’re going to have a much larger receiving corps overall compared to years in the past. Amaro is a 6’5" athletic TE, Moore and Kennard are both 6’4" with speed to burn, Swindall is 6’3" with speed, and even Torres and Franks are about 6’1. I believe Corn Dog and Ward will be the bubble and quick slant guys… It should be very interesting.

Also, I haven’t heard anything about Shawn Corker… Anyone?

Yes, a much bigger receiving group. Corker is still in the mix, I think at an outside receiver spot, but not on the current two deep.

I am very hopeful but not Excited

The old air raid offense was able to come from behind and score when the game was on the line and there was always hope that a scoring play would happen given enought time. (i.e. Texas 2008 game).

Last year the nascar offense was just not good enought to overcome good defenses just look at Texas and Iowa State game given our defense sucked but our offense was stuck in third gear in those games. I can not recall a playmaker on last year receiver corp that created the mojo needed to generate a scoring play that makes the play of the week. The past nascar offense just does not ever run on the edge or get to the red line. The offense is stuck in third gear not bad but not good enough. This year the offense appears to be more of the same get to third gear and hope the other team mess up Missouri game. Tech offense this year is very young and inexperience with some future potential. The offense will score some points but will not score enough against good defense in the Big12-2.

Excited

to see some of the new skill players step it up. Given the experience of the O line, the new speed should make O fun again (fingers crossed hopefully). There has been a lack of the home run play on offense for the last two years (except for Stephens on kick returns and in the Ticket City Bowl run). I want to see some TDs scored from more than fifty yards out.

I’m excited that Tech’s defense may be able to play physical for the first time since Slay graduated and as a team for the first time in more than a decade. There is some size and talent on the D line for a change. Smith and Mackey on the ends should give some QBs nightmares. There is some size and depth at tackle that has been missing for years. If Tech’s defensive line comes through, the rest of the D will follow.

On the whole, I’m expecting Texas Tech to play a more physical brand of football. As much as I liked the Air Raid, I could live with the model of controlling the ball and physically kicking people’s arses. I know that isn’t prbable against UT and OU, but Tech’s offense must be able to turn it up when necessary and control the ball when possible. An improved D would make it possible. Just win!

I love the air raid but would also love to see our O line and RB’s beating the snot out of some people in the trenches.

On offense it is always the OL, it always starts there, it is always on their shoulders.

Explosive play = any play that gains enough yards to generate momentum on offense and set the opposing defense in a defensive frame of mind, to put them off balance. It can be a 12 yarder !

I am expecting to see something a bit different this season. Whether it is Amaro or Trahan, I expect to see good to great plays from the TE spot, plays that look clutch. Plays that off-balance defenses…we may not see that come onto the field until TAMU.

I think we will come onto the field early season working on fundamental pass plays and run plays to get them down and make them look automatic and threatenting to opposing d’s. Work on that during the OOC schedule be prepared to kick aggie’s butt come game time wiff them.

With great success in that particular Big12 game, we will be well positioned to optimize the remainder of the season.

Strategically yours, TM ;-)

Regarding individuals…well spring was spring and fall will be fall. We will see who steps up, we have sufficient depth to be happy with whomever it is…to me it does not matter, we need people enough to create offensive balance—whatever the heck that is anymore !!
