FOOTBALL
Pre-Snap Read: A College Football Blog | No. 45: Texas Tech
I still say this is too low, but Myerberg has questions about the defense, as most Texas Tech can agree.  Still, it's an excellent article by Pre-Snap Read so go take a look.

Meet The Two-Deep: Donald Langley - TEXAS TECH OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE
Langley has some personality (YouTube video), and I love his last quote:

Give your personal message to the Red Raider Nation.
"Red Raider fans I will tell you this right now, we are going to be very good next year, you have my word, we are going to bust our butt and play every play like it's our last we are going to flock to the football especially on defense and we're going to dominate, so expect a big year from us."

Love that! Woot!

Who is the Big 12's NEXT big star? - Big 12 Blog - ESPN
The Ubbenator thinks that QB Seth Doege may be one of the next big star for the Big 12:

Seth Doege, QB, Texas Tech
Doege, a junior, hasn't been a full-time starter since his sophomore year of high school, but Texas Tech stayed committed to him through a pair of serious knee injuries, and Doege has done the same. Now, he'll get a chance to do what he grew up wanting to do, carry on the Texas Tech quarterback legacy that guys like Graham Harrell and Kliff Kingsbury helped build. He'll do it under a different coach, but can he still produce the big numbers?

I too think that Doege is set to have a tremendous season.  There will be bumps in the road, but I'm a fan of Doege and think he's going to be pretty good.

New Mexico Quarterback Stump Godfrey Is Transferring - Mountain West Connection
Remember yesterday when I said that I thought that New Mexico QB Stump Godfrey was an option at quarterback?  Ignore that.  Godfrey has been given his release and I think that Texas Tech fans can now look forward to B.R. Holbrook.

SPORTSbyBROOKS " College Football’s First Nuke: Burnt-Orange Glow | The Longhorn Network Is Nuclear Armageddon | Barking Carnival
This was linked by me yesterday, and to be completely fair, the Aggie websites, TexAgs and IAT12M, broke the news that SbB is "breaking" a day or two ago.  Kudos.  The problem for me is that I don't know that Texas Tech has the leverage to do anything about the full-steam ahead train that is the Longhorn Network.  I don't know that the Aggies do either, and perhaps AD Kirby Hocutt is reviewing their options in closed door meetings rather than making the public announcement like the TAMU Board of Regents.  But the question at hand is whether or not the Longhorn Network is something that presents an unfair advantage to Texas if they are permitted to air high school football games of UT commits, like Jonathan Gray.  This is uncharted waters for the NCAA as the Longhorn Network is the first of its kind.  Yes, Notre Dame has their own network in NBC, but airing high school games is not part of their regularly scheduled programming.

Personally, I don't think the argument that the Longhorn Network is a booster is the right argument to have here, but the question remains that when the VP of the ESPN Longhorn Network makes a statement about wanting to air games and specifically mentioning Jonathan Gray, a high school player that has committed to UT, but not signed, seems to step over the line.  College football coaches, staff and administrators cannot so much as even publicly talk about commits until they've actually signed, but a VP for ESPN/LHN can do this as this leads to whether or not that vice president is actually an employee of ESPN or UT.  UT folks will say that yes, obviously, the VP works for ESPN, but I can't help but think that there is a gray area and that in itself seems unfair. The simple solution would be for the NCAA to simply make a rule that no university affiliated network or conference affiliated network can air high school games, but with the NCAA, these things take time and I wouldn't expect any sort of rule, if any, for a long time.

I still think that the solution would be for the rest of the Big 12 schools to form their own network.  I'm incredibly nervous about the UT vs. TTU game will be on the LHN and TTU fans will be forced to find someone that already bought the LHN package to watch the game.  However, if the remaining Big 12 schools pooled their resources together to form their own network, UT fans would not only be required to buy the LHN network, but then the shoe would be on the other foot and UT fans would be required to purchase the Big 12 network to watch their share of UT games.  This, I think, would force UT to abandon ship (highly unlikely in my opinion) or go independent, which is probably where this thing is headed, but adding one additional school would be easier, albeit a tough task to replace UT, than trying to find conference homes for the remaining nine institutions.

Mike Leach was in Lubbock last night for the Swing Your Sword book signing and it was a packed house.  One interesting thing is that the last link is from DMN's Kevin Sherrington, but at the DMN, Sherrington's opinion is behind a paywall, but it's free at the Sacramento Bee.

Coaches, including Lute Olson invested millions with David Salinas - NCAA Basketball - SI.com | Source -- NCAA plans no probe on coaches losing cash in David Salinas scam - ESPN | The Salinas story gets more salacious - CBSSports.com | Tom Penders talks about Salinas scandal - College Basketball Nation Blog - ESPN
The news that broke yesterday, in the SI.com article is that Billy Gillispie lost $2.3 million from Houston investor/AAU founder, David Salinas.  There are no winners here.  A man took his own life and it appears that a handful of coaches lost a bunch of money investing with Salinas, Gillispie losing the most amount of money.  The second link, the ESPN article from Andy Katz, makes it clear that right now, the NCAA does not plan to investigate this issue, but that doesn't mean that the NCAA can't change their mind.

Whoa there Seth you just threw out a dead cat. So UT is leaving the Big 12 or the Big 12 is sinking – quicker rather than slower and we will see a new conference formed? All because of the murky nature of a TV dude talking about a highly recruited High school player? Looks like a pretty gloomy outlook for the Big 12 – 2 don’t you think?

Yes, I think that the folks at TAMU and in particular, Gene Stallings, aren’t going to take too kindly to the LHN. I could be wrong, but that’s my gut feeling.

Much like they should have done with Bruce Feldman and the Leach book, ESPN needs to tap the brakes on this Longhorn Network idea. There is CLEARLY no way to avoid a conflict, no way to avoid NCAA penalties.

I do hope this leads UT to move independent. They are probably the most well-run athletic department in the nation, but enough. They can stand alone and let them. The have way too much influence over how 9 other programs are run and I’m tired of the UT Vortex being a factor in our decision making. How this network can not be seen as anything less than a competitive advantage is absurd. For UT to say, “Well, go get your own like we did,” is equally absurd. They KNOW that only a handful of programs have the cache to get this sort of deal. Frankly, good for them. And yes, I’m jealous that TTU could never pull this off in a million years. So let them get the $$ and go.

It would suck for maybe an hour if UT leaves. Sure, it’s fun to play them and occasionally beat them. But really, what does the Big XII lose if UT goes solo? Someone else will step up to be the contender for number one with OU and away we go. The ACC, Big East and Pac-10 all survive just fine with only one consistent power. And they are all BCS AQ conferences.

All UT is doing with the LHN is positioning themselves to leave. I say, go on. Leave and best of luck.

I agree

I like the way you put it, “UT vortex.” Does that mean we are Luke Skywalker and UT is the Evil Empire?

UT

There will be no brakes applied, this thing is happening its signed and the four letter network is going to leverage anything they can for a buck. It will be interesting to see which way the NCAA rules but my thought is the NCAA has little motivation to act, since this is a new area not addressed in the rulebook, and who is to say these games could just end up on ESPNU with a wink and a nod and be the same situation.

And UT has zero motivation for going INDE, they have there cake and get to eat it too already, hopefully there is some recognition that to be strong you have to play strong opponents throwing the other nine teams in the wind automatically devalues their competition.

Network, Network

I agree with seth, the rest of the Big 12 need to make their own network and that is regardless of what UT does. Just sign a short-term deal so you can renegotiate in two years if it works out well. The payout is bound to be higher by then.

More on the book and happening.

Don Williams has a review out, and everyone knows where to find that. He was even somewhat fair with his approach.

There is also a 2 part interview on KCBD.com with Pete from last night.
I find it interesting in that video that Leach spared no one- right up until commenting on the new team and the new coach – the sudden absence of anything critical to say was the most dramatic moment for me – It struck me as being on the classy side.

Also, last night I felt like going for a drive. I ended up cruising past the South plains mall about 6:20, traffic was light to moderate elsewhere, but that area of town looked like peak rush-hour, almost approaching Christmas. There might have only been 1,000 or so there, but there were many more gawkers with at least a casual interest in the goings-on, it seems.

If they had more books, it might have grown during the night. The restaurants in the area were even packed, slightly more-so than usual evening food time. I briefly thought about showing up, buying a book, and having it signed – and in the process, asking what was up with Feldman (no guarantee he would know anything, or comment on it). Could have been one of those citizen-journalism moments brought back to share with everyone. Why not just head down there and ask him, right? Well, it would have been too bad- because they were sold out, and crowded malls are nothing you do outside of Christmas willingly. I drove past it all with a “meh” which I know now was probably the right call.

There was more interest in that than some people would have had me believe, and I found that to be a bit of a surprise.

Not as much anti- as you would think, or I was expecting. Maybe only 30% at the max if I had to guess with the most recent information I have. Clearly a case of the vocal minority I suppose. There were people going medieval and reports surfaced in the AJ about a book burning somewhere (It’s always the “intellectual elite” who do that inevitability.) …But I have heard no reports of things going ugly or any rioting from last night, much less a book burning.

I also think what was most striking is that we now know that while he does have his vocal supporters, and they are more than I would have thought, there are also some moderate supporters with boots on the ground who will turn out too.

Even more than that, there seems to be a silent majority, who at least don’t mind him and have a casual interest, or at least curiosity. Traffic was unusual enough in the area to make ac case for that. This is a face of it all that we didn’t really know existed until last night.

Kevin Sherrington - Ubber Conventional Longhorn Loyalist

For 10 years Dallas Morning News’ Kevin Sherrington was consistently critical of Mike Leach in his Saturday scattershoot column. So it surprises me to see him take a trip to Lubbock to cover the book signing event Leach did last night. Most of Sherrington’s sniping over the years had to do with Leach’s bucking the system. Any system. Whether it was passing too much, not punting on 4th down or speaking his mind, Sherrington is a “this is the way they’ve always done things for a reason” kind of guy. Now he takes the man to task for trying to clear his name. The legal system is in place in this nation unless you want to use it. And if you do you’ll be blackballed in your profession. Too bad conventional thinkers like Sherrington make up the majority.

Many Lady Raider fans were kind of expecting Kellyn Schneider to come to TTU. She is a good basketball player, we are going to enjoy her game.

The two sisters and mom have a great story, legacy basketball. Glad they are in Lubbock and supporting TTU.

Men’s basketball is taking on an ugly tinge with all the AAU / recruiting connections…we might expect to read more bad bad before we get our of this mud hole.

The ‘Meet the Two Deep’ series has been fun. All the guys are interesting in their own way. I wonder whose idea it was.
