Roster Rumblings | Texas Tech Football Roster Released
Final Roster
Texas Tech has released the final roster for the 2011 season. I think all of the freshmen that were going to check in have checked in and this is your 2011 roster. I've got the entire roster after the jump and some thoughts on the roster, including who is here, who isn't here, etc.
Missing in Action
There are a handful of players that didn't return. Right now, I don't really have any answers or explanations as to why, but here's the players that I didn't see listed on the final roster that were part of the 2011 signing class or on the 2010 roster:
DE/LB Joe Carmical
DL Coby Coleman
CB Thierry Nguema
DT Michael Odiari
DL Lawrence Rumph
ATH Otis Wright
DE Desimon Green,
I've heard that Nguema is going to greyshirt, so we'll see about that. Also, Green is apparently headed to Hargrave Academy. I wish Texas Tech had a coach on their staff with a connection to Hargrave. I think that Wright was supposedly going to have issues qualifying. I don't have any answers as to why Carmical, Coleman or Rumph are no longer on the roster. I have no idea if the feeling was mutual. The ones that hurt the most for me are Carmical and Coleman, who both redshirted last year. Carmical was switched from linebacker to defensive end this year, so maybe he didn't think that he fit in this defense any longer. Coleman is one that I'm really going to miss. An athletic defensive tackle that I thought could have been a solid part of the rotation in years to come, but he apparently had issues qualifying. The loss of Rumph causes some problems from a depth standpoint, but I think Texas Tech is fine at the defensive line position. Odiari was a preferred walk-on and I've heard that Nguema may be gray-shirting, which is why he's not on the roster, but will be next year.
Freshmen
There are twenty five freshmen listed here, one of those freshmen being Javares McRoy. There are a couple of clarifications. Player "Pete" Roberton has to be LaDarrin Robertson. I think the only preferred walk-on is Killough, who was Amaro's quarterback in high school, appears to be the only preferred walk-on on the roster. We talked about Killough in May and it appears that he's on the team as an athlete rather than a quarterback. His Scout profile said that he's fast and maybe he develops into an inside receiver at some point during his career.
Here's the 2011 Texas Tech Football Commitments page, just for your reference. Let me know if there's anything that stands out to you as to the height and weight of the incoming class.

JUCO's and Transfers
We've known about Osunde, Mackey and Wesley as the JUCO's in the 2011 class. I don't know anything about Yeakey, except that he did play for Redlands University last year. Here's some YouTube video of Yeakey in high school. I've listed both Osbourne and Gilliam on this list, but they were actually here during the spring. I couldn't find anything about Gilliam and only found Osbourne's N. Dakota St. profile. When we found out that Bustin was going to transfer to Texas Tech, it made the top of the list of news back in May. You can watch some YouTube video of Bustin. When Williams transferred we all knew that he'd have to sit out this year and he'll only have one year to play, but he was incredibly productive for West Texas A&M. You can see some YouTube video of Williams against Tarleton State from 2009. I also couldn't find anything about Jordan Osbourne, so help us all out with any information or links if you have them.

The 2011 Roster
Last, but certainly not least. I always like viewing the roster by position group and so I've sorted the roster by position rather than by number or by name. This is always a good time for you all to let everyone else know if a player has gained or lost weight, and anything that you notice about the incoming players.

Adam (Cupcake) James
made the roster? Oh well.
This is a complete mystery
I always thought he would leave the team on his own or at the coaches’ request. In addition to not contributing on the field, I understand he was a detriment to the team (bad attitude, poor work habits). So why has TT not done what Leach should have done?
They don't want to admit they were wrong
And by “they” I mean Hance. I’m sure Hance told Tubbs that cutting James wasn’t an option. So Tubs is sucking it up one more year and being a good soldier. He only touched the ball twice last year. I’m not worried.
If you're talking to Coach Rainman, whatever you do don't bring up the subject of weather.
Why? They have sovereign immunity - A Licence to Kill
They are The Untouchables.
If you're talking to Coach Rainman, whatever you do don't bring up the subject of weather.
Different theories of liability.
Sovereign immunity doesn’t apply if the State has waived immunity, as it has under the Texas Tort Claims act, the Whistleblower Act, etc.
But I agree with you, I think they’ve got a lot of protection, even from the Craig James of the world.
Anyways, having good legal defenses doesn’t mean that lawsuits aren’t a real fear. Tech has been battling Leach’s lawsuit for years, now, and it might not be finally dealt with for years to come. Avoiding lawsuits is important even if there’s no real threat of liability.

Right, no worries
… assuming he won’t be a distraction. He just seems the type to quit rather than rot on the bench. So I keep wondering, why on earth is he still here?
is it just rhetoric....
…or is there the possibility that the coaches are actually gonna play the goon??
Pretty big names
For the freshmen….very few mystery guests.

Coleman didn’t pan out last year. They assumed that, due to his athleticism at a poor high school, he’d bloom once he was in a college training program. He never developed, and wound up getting more overweight and not any stronger from what I’ve heard.
No idea why Carmichael or Rumph aren’t on the roster. Rumph ended the spring as one of the top players on the line. We’ll see if any news ever comes out about those two.
Four place kickers? One for kickoffs, right hashmark, left hashmark, and straight field goals/extra points.
don't forget onside....

Corn Dog...
It’s about time for him to make some sort of impact. Too much talent underneath him, that if he doesn’t, he’s likely to be replaced very easily and very quickly.
Anybody know anything about WR Jordan Davis?
"Why not us?" '04+'07='11.
I actually believe in Tommy Tuberville.
I cheered my lungs out for Corn Dog last year….he owes me! ;)

Just curious
Is Williams the only transfer who has to sit out 2011 season? Also, where did Malcolm Gilliam transfer from? He is shown as a JR., but the last school is listed as Plano East . That’s a High School, right? I’m a little bummed about Rumph’s departure; thought he looked pretty good in the spring.
J. McRoy
does anyone know if he has to sit the year out?
by CaribbeanRaider on Jul 25, 2011 9:53 AM CDT reply actions
Yes
He should have to sit out due to transfer rules, but it would be really awesome if he didn’t!

Very disturbing that L. Rumph..
is not listed. Tech has a ferocious attrition on the D line – Seay, Perry , B Williams, Dixon etc etc. But I suppose all D1 programs do..
"do routine things routinely"
whoops Perry is still in Lubbock.. meant Bobby Agoucha..

Trouble ahead at DT??
Simmons and Wesley are definitely going to have to feature, else DT is way too thin…Coleman, Rumph and Odiari (Though 2 of these weren’t likely to feature heavily), joining Myles Wade and Agoucha/Hampton in departures, is there trouble at the mill here? Some more heavy juco and HS talent needed in the 2012 recruiting class…
With Rumph nd Coleman gone.....
would the South Plains Drifter consider allowing Smith to have his 4 game suspension lifted(that is if he plays by the Tubby rules in August)? If Smith could begin the season starting with Mackey our D-line could be a real monster this year. They all need to play together. I think Smith will be fine but would love to have him sooner than later. Wreck’Em Tech
Don hursey
From 2010 class is also gone. Seems like half the 2010 class itself is gone

Yes, there a lot folks that have moved on or never made it on campus:
OL Aleon Calhoun
LB Joe Carmical
DL Coby Coleman
RB Delans Griffin
DL Lawrence Rumph
OL Javius Townsend
DB Phillip Warren
DB Lavaugh Whigham
LB Tahrick Peak
DB Don Hursey
DE Lawrence Cayou

That's a bit troubling...
11 players gone. I would like to know the reason 8 of them are from the defense. Is it because of Willis, or because of Glasgow? Most of those players would have been Ruffin’s recruits, so it makes me curioius about the why.

Would have loved to have
seen Delans Griffin come to campus. He was the guy I was most excited about in that particular class. Oh well, good thing the next class addressed the RB need more than adequately I’d say!!!
Everytime the aggies lose an angel gets its wings!!! Follow me on Twitter @chippadip
That's awful ...
and increases the pressure two fold on the the current class. If there is similar attrition with this class we’re sunk.

To address some questions that you all have asked. From what I remember, Calhoun, Griffin, Townsend, Warren, Whigham, Peak and Cayou never made it on campus. Hursey was here all last year, but decided to transfer. I still don’t have any answers for Carmical, Coleman or Rumph other than what kayak said above.
DT Mike Jones was another guy that never made it on campus.
Peak is attending Hargrave and is expected to be here next year (I think).
I’d also suggest that you consider Darrin Moore as being part of this class. Keep in mind that Tre’ Porter, Dartwan Bush, Scott Smith, Donald Langley, Cqulin Hubert and Darrin Moore all contributed last year, which is a lot of players from one class. And there are a lot of players waiting in the wings.
There was just one player, Desimond Green, that didn’t make it to campus in this class, which is outstanding. Getting them on campus is the toughest part sometimes. Green is also expected to come back to TTU once he finishes work at Hargrave.

Scratch the stuff about Tahrick Peak. I was thinking of Terrell Hartsfield, who is at a JUCO (I think) who might still make it to Texas Tech. Tahrick and Nubian Peak committed here, but I think they left shortly after arrival.

Double-T Nation
Townsend...
de-committed a few weeks before signing day and went with Okie light, a la Castleman this year….
We have lost a lot of people from these first two classes.
The first class was a real scramble for the staff to just find people who looked like they could play…a bunch were looking to come to TTU who simply did not have the grades out of HS, and it looks like perhaps some who made it in initially did not have the wherewithall to maintain.
The second class looked to be a more solid class academically, but perhaps as we can see still had a group who could not quite make it…but they may have been academically stronger than the first.
I have been looking at the grades of the guys who are commiting this class and there are a bunch of guys who look like good students as well as good athletes….I would like to have more comprehensive data, it is not readily available. I think this is an important factor in our recruiting. Looking for the current building class to be stickier than the first two, I do believe that getting these kind of guys is more in the vein of what we will call success as we grow a championship roster.
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
looking at weight
Ben McRoy has not gained any weight at all. And I don’t remember Donnie Carona being 218.
Also....
remember this should be the first roster with several other “walk-ons” coming in August.
I know coming with Mackey from Hinds CC( I live just down the road from Hinds) were at least 2 other walk-ons but I guess we will see…..I do like seeing all those great running backs with speed!!!! Weck’Em Tech

Doesn't mean he is still on scholarship right.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
I find
the attrition of D Linemen troubling.
ALSO: Time for Douglas, Ward, and Fisher to step up (or the WILL get beat out by Kennard and Moore)

Do you think
Donnie Hart, about as tough a kid as they come, is embarrassed that Nancy wears his #82?
Did he not score the first td in big 12?

Just to confirm ...
Seth is correct; “Pete” Robertson = LaDarrin Robertson
Can't wait for the football season to start!
After transferring to Lubbock in January, I just bought a house (sold the one in Irving). Now I am just 15 minutes down University Drive away from the Jones! I am making it my duty to boo any time nancy james is on the field.
Can anyone guess what the scene will be like, on the final home game in 2011—Senior Day—with nancy and daddy james on the pregame field???
I can guess...
Senior Day will be quite a scene when Nancy and his dad get their a**es booed like crazy. Personally, I can’t wait! That’s the only time I would condone doing something like that—but Nancy and his evil dad deserve it for all the damage they’ve done to my alma mater.
“Boo ’em again, boo ’em again, harder, harder!”
Is it dumb of me to recommend that people just be quiet. No clapping, no booing, just silence. Seems like that would speak volumes, in some way.
Go Raiders . . .

I would be shocked if the James family would risk an ugly scene by participation in the on-field Senior Day presentation
Wise counsel would tell them to skip it. Why throw meat to the lions?

It sure spooked the Longhorns last year

And I guess I thought he was worth neither my jeer or any other emotion.

I probably won't be in the stadium when it happens - We tend to arrive during the school song
There were times in the stands last year where people were screaming at each other over the change in leadership. Not fun. Adam James needs to stay out of the spotlight & finish his playing days as quietly as possible.

Actually
I think Seth is right on, with one addition: Everyone, in silence at that moment, simply turns their backs to the field until the next player & family is announced, then turn around and start cheering again—-if that is what they do on Senior Day.

I guess so...
Or we could turn our backs and break wind, just like in “Monte Python and the Holy Grail.” Remember: “I f**t in your general direction?” After a long afternoon tailgating with BBQ…well, you know!
Absolutley do not boo it's less than classy just forebear.. quietly..speaks from the heart folks.

Terrelle Pryor May Not Be Eligible For NFL Supplemental Draft:
http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2011/5/31/2198696/nfl-supplemental-draft-2011
Very excited...
the 2 players from McKeesport PA have made…..I know there are some losses but I really like where this is going at least recruiting wise….and remember TTU had several players come in January and actually participated in Spring Ball…..i.e. Ronnie Daniels and some very good receivers…..I think our secondary will be much better if anything else they get to play alot more zone and not just matched up just because “The Jeep” wanted too!! I’m also starting the campaign to “Free Scotty” if he keeps his nose clean in August let him start the season on the active roster! TTU needs him…..so here is to “Free Scotty”!!!!!! Wreck’em Tech
Hartsfield is at CoLin CC in Wesson, MS....
and he should make it back to TTU!!!!! “Free Scotty” Wreck’Em Tech
Marcus Roberson
What ever happened with Marcus Roberson? I see he’s not on the roster, but he’s still listed under 2011 recruits. Anybody know anything?
Free "Scotty"
I love it. We need him badly to be back in action by Game 1. It sucks something fierce that he’s banned another 4 games. I really hope Tubs softens his stance. My god, the kid has paid the price. FREE SCOTTY!!!

I don't know, my man....
.. while I like the sound of it – because it does have a ring to it, I’m not so sure the kid should get that kind of backing. We don’t even know what the kid did. Could be that he’s damned lucky to get any kind of second chance at all and 1 year was generous. Tubs is hurting as much as anyone on that deal, so I’m going to assume the punishment is fitting for the crime. Could be that he is massively detrimental to team chemistry, a trade I’m not willing to take. Rather to pay the price now and send the message that Tubs is serious about his rules. I can live with it unless some evidence arises that shows that Tubs is unquestionably being way to hard on the kid.
OK OK OK...
You’re right. If it was something totally detrimental or undermined the coaches – yes, he should serve the punishment in full. Perhaps it should be “Free Scotty’s reason for punishment.” I’d love to know what warrants a year’s suspension in Tubs’ eyes. I realize if we haven’t found out the details by now it aint gonna happen. But, it just makes me more and more curious.

I'm with you on that one.
You would think that it must have been something serious for a coach to sit what appears to be a phenomenal talent. Especially considering how badly we the D could’ve used him.
Hope the kid learned a lesson, what ever it was.
We all are curious about what happens with these kind of situations.
At some point it does become personal for the people involved, I am willing to support what happens in the locker room stays in the locker room to the degree that it builds the team.

Detrimental to team Chemistry...
…..see Adam James.
I'm just excited to have both McRoy brothers.
If Harrison Jeffers gets out of the dog house, we have three players with some serious big play potential.
Don't sleep on Crawford.
I’m actually excited to see how A. Crawford fits in this year. I remember Tubs taking a quick liking to him upon arrival. He even went as far as to call him a “SEC style running back”, which in I think in Tubs’ eyes is a great compliment (probably mine, too). I just think he was a little outmatched by both Batch and Stephens for playing time last year. It should be interesting. I always feel like TECH is rock solid on skill positions. It’s so easy for WRs and RBs to slip the through the cracks. It’s the D-line and other vital areas like LBs and D-backs that I hope we see a vast improvement. The OLine will be solid. I’m confident of that.

I like Crawford.
He has done everything that he has been asked to do while going though tough injury situations. I would love to see him finish strong this season.

Whatever works
The coaches will be the ones who determine who will do whatever is needed to get on the field and contribute effectively. All of us, me included, have favorites. The thing is that in some instances several of my favorites play at the same postions. So, as long as they do make it on the field, I just hope they all help us to victory in each and every game. A complete team effort will usually defeat individual talent. I think that is the whole phylosophy of some coaches, including a secluded pirate. The more people that get involved and simply play up to their potential at their assigned position can go a very long way to gaining a win or avoiding a loss. While some of my favs may not get to play much, or at all, I want the team to still win. As long, that is, none of those contributors are wearing #82…;-P

Great for all the UFAs from Tech!
Can we get an article this week on all the guys that get signed. Love to see it. Congrats to all our Raiders getting signed this week!
Already done
Someone beat me to it. Check the fan posts-it’s already got a lot of comments.
Overdoing training for newbies?
Couldn’t help but notice that a good number of our HS recruits have changed for the worse physically. I don’t know what exercises or training they’ve been doing at Tech, but for both Kindred Evans and Le’Raven Clark to lose 3 inches in height since signing day has to be a concern. The worst case might just be Tony Morales, who despite his twin Alfredo not growing an inch, is now shorter than him….
I would like to understand more about that...I can certainly afford, even enjoy losing 3 inches of height...as long as my arms shorten proportionally !!

cannot believe Clark is 6'3
I saw him listed at 6’7 240 in a lot of places. I guess we know why A&M and tu passed on him now. I thought he was supposed to be a lanky guy that was going to add weight and become an all world LT. Ther was a guy on texags who swore he was the best LT in the state and that we should go after him. Sherman had no interest.
Surprised the DT from Pennsylvania made it in.
Seriously, is Chris Perry in his 8th year on campus? He went to The U like 9 years ago.
Did not realize that Deandre Washington guy was so short.
Surprised Chidozie has not added any weight.
Texas did not pass on Clark.
Clark passed on Texas. Link:
When top offensive tackle Christian Westerman switched his pledge from Texas to Auburn last Friday, the Longhorns looked to fill his spot in the class. They initiated communication with Clark and rumors began to swirl that he could make the switch to Texas.
He was visited by new Longhorn offensive line coach Stacy Searels last Monday.
Despite his soft-spoken and shy demeanor, Clark made his intentions loud and clear to the new Texas coach. "(Texas) asked me if I was interested and things like that because they lost their commit or whatever," Clark said. "I told them I was committed to Texas Tech."
Searels told Clarkâs coach Jeff Miller that if he had been at Texas all along, he would have called Clark first.
(Nobody had Clark at 6’7.)
maybe not 6'7
But Scout, Rivals, ESPN et al had him at 6’5 or 6’6. Tubby even quoted him as 6’6 in his ‘class of 2011’ piece. So where have these mysterious inches gone? A 6’3 ‘future first round pick’ at LT – as rare as hens teeth…
a typo for nearly all of the 2011 recruits..
the only 3 who haven’t shrunk, or lost significant weight are the Penn duo and mini Morales (Now, major morales)…
What was Brewer listed at?
Thought everyone knew he was around 6’

Back to "Free Scotty".....
As I mentioned when I started this campaign if he did something so bad well keep the suspension on but The South Plains Drifter definitely punished him when we needed a lot last year and I do understand that……Also, if it was so bad why did Scotty just declare for the draft? Somehow I think it was bad enough to get suspended(which I understand and back TSPD) but not bad enough to get kick-off the team…..So to me it is a new season, revisit the suspension in Fall Camp and even make him do extra stuff to prove he learned his lesson and allow him to earn his way back to be on the Regular Roster for game #1. TSPD does need him and obviously as things have transpired he need TTU to get a good look for the NFL…..So put the boot on his neck in Fall Camp and see how he responds and if he does let him help himself and TTU starting game #1….Just seems reasonable to me…..“Free Scotty”…Wreck’Em Tech
I Love Texas Tech Football
and it is great to have so many fans blog about it. Interest is high for Tech fans even if the national press thinks the Red Raiders no longer exist. I hope the players understand the lack of respect and use it as a motivating factor.
Miss Rumph. Glad to see most of the Class of 2011 on campus. Guns up!
Hope springs eternal.
Bruce Feldman
One of the top reporters on College Football is still MIA, even when all of the Media Days are happenin’ around the country. Does anybody know what happened to him? ESPN is sticking to the line that “he was never suspended”. But it sure looks like he’s gone. He has not posted anything on ESPN since the controversy started a couple of weeks ago.
I don’t think it’s beyond ESPN to pay out hush money to someone they suspended. You know, with their ethics being a little skewed and all.
