BIG 12 MEDIA DAYS
2011 Big 12 Football Media - Big 12 Conference - Official Athletic Site
The full schedule is at this link. Texas Tech is up first thing this morning at 11:00 a.m. There will be information rolling in all day, so I'd encourage you to follow a couple of things. I have a Twitter list of Texas Tech folks (that haven't blocked me) that will probably be Tweeting the events. I'd also encourage you to follow the hashtag #Big12MD. You'll note that you're supposed to be able to watch the press conferences live and I think you might be able to watch the press conferences on Fox Sports Southwest.

The quote from this tweet is as follows: "spirit squads serving as media hosts in Dallas. Representatives from Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Baylor: " If you were a media member, which host are you choosing?
Texas "Would Have Been A Good Team If Not For The Turnover Ratio"? - Football Study Hall
I thought this was fantastic. Mack Brown claimed that had it not been for turnovers, Texas would have been a good team. Bill Connelly from Football Study Hall says otherwise . . . convincingly.

2011 NFL Undrafted Free Agents | NEPatriotsDraft.com - Patriots NFL Draft Site
This is the absolute best site for watching which undrafted free agents are signed by NFL teams. As you all have already noted, LB Brian Duncan goes to the Buffalo Bills, DT Colby Whitlock to the Denver Broncos, WR Detron Lewis to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, LB Bront Bird to the San Diego Chargers, WR Lyle Leong to the Dallas Cowboys and QB Taylor Potts to the St. Louis Rams. Congrats to all of those players! I don't think that there are any other players that might get signed as I can't think of any other seniors, but follow that link for any updates.

LAJ's Don Williams is back at work where he confirms that DT Lawrence Rumph and LB/DE Joe Carmical are transferring. DE Desimon Green is supposedly headed to Hargrave. Williams also has the practice schedule and the Texas St. and Nevada games will both start at 6:00 p.m.

Doege Leads New-Look Red Raiders into Media Day - TEXAS TECH OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE
This is a little interesting as I think we're going to see more articles from the official site. I saw some time last year that Mavs owner Mark Cuban really had no use for the media any more as the Mavs could produce all of the media content necessary and questioned why he needed to credential media members (this is an extreme paraphrase and do not claim any of this to be accurate, but sorta accurate). Anyway, I think that Texas Tech is starting to trend this way or will start to trend this way.
Rivals.com Football Recruiting - Surprise teams highlight team recruiting rankings
The first 2012 recruiting rankings are released and Texas Tech is #26, behind the following Big 12 schools: #1 Texas, #5 Oklahoma, #16 Texas A&M and #19 Oklahoma St. I'm surprised that Texas Tech is behind Oklahoma St. as usually the number of commits plays a part in the ranking, but it's also June 26th and its a long time until February.

LONGHORN NETWORK
I'm surprised that this is still news, but it's still news. There are a handful of links, including Tuberville saying that he doesn't think the LHN isn't an advantage and Mack Brown telling you that because players are already committed to UT that he doesn't think the LHN is an advantage, but an advantage for all of the other schools. Of course. I also really recommend the Richard Justice link (second link), he really takes the Longhorns to task.

The Texas High School Coaches Association game was played last night and I had not noticed the rosters (PDF), but there were a couple more names that might try to walk-on at Texas Tech, including JaCorian Duffieild from UC Randolph (YouTube and looks like he's still growing into his frame and the kid can jump!) and Jim Mills, III from San Isidro (couldn't find anything this morning).

Rivals 2012 Class Rankings as of July 26
I noted that Rivals has updated 2012 class rankings as of this a.m.
UT #1 OU #5 TT #13 A&M #17 OSU #20
I expected UT and OU. I am susprised that A&M is not higher. Tech was showing 16 commits. A&M was showing 20 commits with two not yet ranked by Rivals. Still, A&M is
showing more 4 stars than Tech. Something seems amiss. But, we have to remember that it’s a long ways till signing date.
oops???
Now I note that Tech’s rank in the drop down list does not match the list in the story. Oops!!!

I like this one even better;
ESPN ranks us this week at number 13. Damn, I’m proud to be a Red Raider.

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
Nice!

I believe that the rankings are averaged up to a certain #, you dont get more credit for signing <16 or some number there abouts.
So if our 10 is better on average than there 20, were better off.
rivals assumes our remaining recruits will be about as good as the first ten

I was too early...
I see the new ranking of #15 this afternoon. I think they might have still been in process of updating the list early this a.m. Right now, I’ll happily settle for #15. I’m interested to see Tech’s rank for the
2011 class when they finally update that. Actually, it’s Seth’s fault for referencing “June 26” in his posting. It’s not nice to confuse old people. (KIDDING)

GO TECH
I hope all the Tech players make their NFL rosters.
Looks good for the program.
Whoever said, 'It's not whether you win or lose that counts,' probably lost.
So I wasn't imagining it.
The “in house” media really is stepping up.
Did I want to see that? Well, sure to a degree, but we now live in a world where it is more than media – It is an infinite P.R. campaign, and you can smell it a mile away.
Do I blame them? Well, Simply doing press releases and media dumps to the local newspaper won’t get you that far in this town. Even their old in-house stuff was underwhelming. Here’s the thing: We have a few local media outlets that aren’t mickey-mouse operations. Believe it or not, there are journalists in town who can spell.
Of course, picking one or two competent media outlets, and people to work with would have set off a firestorm among the hacks and sleazeballs, and would have left the majority of the local media outside of their reach.
So it isn’t just my imagination that the “message” has been highly controlled and unified and tastes like a political campaign. What a nice new world we have to live in. Keep fresh batteries in your BS detectors… Sigh.
Seth, do I have it right that the “new” Tech media outfit is interacting with you more than in the past? Not that there is anything wrong with that, since you are highly likely do do the right thing, even if they eventually decide to push some boundaries.
In this age, media is no longer about snapping photos, shooting video, and spitting out canned facts. It seems new media is about promotion and brand-building with “old media” simply serving as tools to accomplish a more strategic objective. If the whorns can have a dedicated network spraying orange goo 24/7, we certainly need to promote ourselves with a well-designed, comprehensive marketing plan. I would prefer that plan to include a bullet point encouraging head coaches to avoid public comments about WhornoVision that could be construed as support for the network in any form or fashion.
I don't get that
Does Tubs know something that pretty much nobody else does?
I noticed the lack of concern too.
Speaking of which, this is NOT the unified message I was expecting, considering Hocutt’s new favorite word is concern. Hmmph. Weird.
But yeah, I don’t expect the new media game to be all bad, they do have to compete after all and we want to see that, right?
Good thing we were born with two hands. One to raise out fists and cheer and the other one on standby to face-palm.
Media
has replaced “news” which is good because news had ethics and procedures and checks, Media is what we get now which is highly subjective to opinion with zero regard to the entire frame of reference. Facts are cherrypicked to support a given opinion.
I think its good we have an official media outlet producing an official point of view might as well tell the story if its worth being told

I don’t know that TTU is absolutely moving in the direction of not really having a need for local papers, however, if you go to the Dallas Cowboys, Mavericks, or any other professional sports franchise, they all produce their own content and they all have hired their own reporters that work for the team. Some of them are really good, but yes, big brother is always watching.

From Richard Justice’s column:
Fans want an independent voice, and the only place that can be found is from journalists and commentators without financial ties to ESPN or the Longhorn Network.
I think he’s giving fans way too much credit, and the success of an SB Nation seems to belie his conclusion. He posted at 11:10AM yesterday and has three comments. Seth posted 20 hours later and already has 9 comments.
Justice...
I agree with everything he said about the rivalries.
They have to be protected in order for UT to thrive as an Independent. And what better way for A&M, OU and Tech to spite them, then not playing them?
Like he said
“Does Texas dominate the Big 12? No. Will Texas dominate the Big 12 because ESPN throws more money at it? No.”
"Why not us?" '04+'07='11.
I actually believe in Tommy Tuberville.
I agree with Justice too.
I also think that the LHN is not going to suddenly catapult UT into Big 12 domination. It’s just a new source of revenue. As he notes, they haven’t dominated the conference with a huge revenue advantage since minute one, so why should we expect a few extra million to change that.
If we hire good coaches and assistant coaches who recruit and train the right athletes, we can win the Big 12. It can be done without rivers of money, you just have to know how.
by Skin Patrol on Jul 26, 2011 11:32 AM CDT up reply actions
So what happens when the football gods cycle the market and turn domination upside down for a decade or two. Texas goes mid-pack and revenues for espn drop no one cares about lhn
Eveyone forgets this thing is cyclical, just ask the aggies, michigan wolverines, notre dame, etc etc Mack Brown isnt going to coach forever

I've thought the same thing
Notre Dame, who has pockets as deep as anyone, along with Michigan, have had a rough go. Texas will most assuredly experience the same thing. There isn’t a doubt in my mind that UT is on the backside of annual national championship/conf championship contention. Not that they will totally suck, but they will at some point become a 8-9 win team more often than a 11-12 win team.
Then espn will be looking at all the fine print to figure out a way to break the deal…
Thanks! To be fair Justice did have 43 comments, but they are hard to find:

Rivals recruiting rating
Isn’t as high as it should be because currently only 3 commits have 4 star rivals ratings. That will definately increase with guys getting bumped up like Ladarius Newbold, Clayton Nicholas(he is the top prostyle qb in Texas) and other guys.

It's great to see the comments on Baron's blog
He’s got the attention of a lot of folks in Pittsburgh. I wish him the best!
Those recruiting rankings make no sense. Cal is #17 with only 4 recruits. Sure 3 of them are 4-star, but beyond that they don’t have anything. I’m assuming the writer believes this class has a lot of potential and they will continue on their pace of 75% 4-star recruits, but that will not happen. AtM is only one slot ahead at #16, but they have 20 commits and 6 4-stars. Hmm…which is a better class at this point? This list is full of examples like this. They need to decide if their list is what has actually happened or how they think it will end up. Or just make 2 lists altogether.
The point of early rankings is to rank what the teams have done to that point, not rank what they have done and assume about the rest of their class. Otherwise it just ends up being another popularity contest for the bigger name schools and traditional powerhouses to see their name highly ranked on another meaningless list.
UHHH
Yeah…

I think reflects Hocutt’s approach to running the Athletic Dept. ……I love it because as was pointed out the AJ has not even kept up with anything this summer……With so much other media out there like twitter, facebook, and youtube then just use those to your advantage!!!! LIVE COVERAGE OF TECH MEDIA DAY STARTING NOW
Whoever said, 'It's not whether you win or lose that counts,' probably lost.
From Ubbs:
Weakest gesture: Tommy Tuberville, Texas Tech
These are crucial days for the Big 12, and the league unveiled its branding initiative early Monday evening by introducing each of the Big 12 coaches and a slogan around the Big 12’s new tagline, “How We Play.”
Tuberville, however, was the only coach in the league not present. He was at a golf event elsewhere in the metroplex with Texas Tech alumni. Texas A&M is the central figure in the most recent Big 12 dustup, but the league could have used a truly united front. "
Wow. Weakest gesture for not showing up to some half-ass “branding initiative” and awesome new tagline “How We Play”? For our “new” conference that has been around for over a decade? And a “truly unified front”? What the hell is he talking about? Is UT truly unified with us with their new network? Is aggy unified with all their threats of leaving the conference? Was Mizzou unified when they tried to throw us under the bus last year and unsuccessfully whore themselves out to the Big 10? Give me a break, Ubbs.
I thought it was a pretty strong gesture that Tubbs actually cares more about the school’s alumni than schmoozing with the conference that slobbers all over UT any chance they get. In fact, I’m surprised the new tagline wasn’t “We Are Texas…I mean the Big 12”
The beer at the golf course was better than the beer at the branding.

Actually agree with Tubs here
Why go on some goofy dive into the world of higher-up-sports-officialdom and P.R. where everyone is bug eyed at the (non-)possibilities and uses the word “synergy” as a greeting.
These press conventions are common on planet earth, and they are mostly all the same.
I would rather be golfing, too, and golf is barely on my radar. Combine that with how useless I see the current NCAA leadership, and why would I bother with one of their cute little parties, either?
It is entirely likely he did more for our sports program while out golfing, actually.
Remember – unlike Hocutt, he is not worried about the longhorns and ESPN,
so why not walk the talk?
+Points to Tubs here. (And I am not in the habit of saying that very often.)

More news on putting up a united front during Big XII media days
Trending on Twitter is the news that A&M, OU, OSU, and the always looking Mizzou in talks with the SEC. This jump could happen as early as 2014.
Probably just rumors, but that actually makes too much sense as a real possibility, to just ignore.
And I hate to say that. But – Texas politics aside – that is just as good a move as any for the SEC should they decide they want to go large. Might even be their best move.
Let’s hope the Pac 12 would then get desperate (for fear of not being able to compete in a super conference world) and decide to let UT keep their network, and invite UT and Tech.
Hell – if there is a real fear of those 4 going to the SEC – I could even see a preemptive strike by the PAC which might leave Tech in the cold….. unless A&M is dead set on the SEC. (And if the SEC would have them without the others that is)
Of all the BS flying around that I dismiss without much thought…… this one has merit IMO.
A&M IS dead set on the SEC - That's what killed our move to the Pac 16 last year - Aggies balked at the move
And I wouldn’t wish the Longhorns on any conference at this point. The are independent already & need to be left as an independent. We need to join the Pac 12+
If you're talking to Coach Rainman, whatever you do don't bring up the subject of weather.
XII
No one is going anywhere
Texas has no incentive for going INDE
The aggies never had an invite to the SEC
Oklahoma doenst care
Were not going to the pacific conference
The SEC isnt threatend by the Big ten or XII and I doubt they expand their conference any further than middle aged man can drive an RV after a fall evening of drinking whiskey

Wow, just wow!
When asked about dropping TCU from the schedule, Tubberville said “That’s not the type of team we want to play now.” I guess we want to play more teams like Texas State, he may want to drop Nevada as well, they win few games here and there.
"The trouble with our Liberal friends is not that they are ignorant, it's just they know so much that isn't so" Ronald Reagan
At this point, with this team, I think we are probably better off not playing them at that time either.
At the end of the season – I wouldn’t care and think we could probably beat them. But because of our particular transition issues from last year, and because of their proven year to year continuity under Patterson – I’d just assume not play them until Tubs and Chad have had time to get everyone on the same page. The conference is going to be hard enough. I only wish (this year anyway) that we had 1 more patsy to warm up with. Next year, I won’t feel that way at all – and suspect that Tubs won’t either – but his year, I can live with it.
But admitting that you are afraid to play a decent team is a bit much, I would have preferred that he just keep his mouth shut. Very seldom when he opens his mouth does something intelligent come out.

Seriously?!
That was a DMN headline writer who did that, not Tuberville. C’mon, FR. You are smarter than this.
You don’t think Tuberville is constantly saying stupid stuff?
“not the type of team we want to play now” was a quote.
What about saying we will continue to run a 3-4 after he hires a coach to run a 4-2-5? How about it was cold or it was windy? How about we will run the air raid when you have run off everyone who knew anything about the offense.?
How about him saying that last year was pain because he was constantly having to sell the program to alumni? How about firing a guy for beating his wife and then saying that he is a great guy? To me those are all stupid things to say.
I am not sold yet on Tuberville as fit for Texas Tech. I can learn to live with the stupid stuff he says when he stops doing stupid stuff on the field and proves that he can lead the program forward instead of backward.

I actually agree with Tuberville on this
We’re not ready for such bravado. Heck, when Texas, OU, Florida, ’Bama etc. can schedule cup cakes why should we risk a no glory game when we have a brutal in conference schedule looming over the horizon?
And, not sure if anybody noticed (sarcasm)
It is not like our non-conference has been much in the past 10+ years. Leach was one of the weakest schedulers ever; from the Bill Snyder school of “play the blind sisters of the poor.” I appreciate Tubs just being honest; I respect that. Our schedule is hard enough.
Guns Up!
And then the rest of the quote...
you totally misled this entire thread…just the exact same way the DMN did. There was plenty of explanation and then numerous quotes that he thinks Tech and TCU should play home and home and how it would be good for both teams. Don’t cherry pick quotes without context, FR.
It was all about where TCU fell on the schedule, not who TCU is. In fact, if ever we wanted a great opportunity to stomp them, this would be the year.
tcu wouldn't....
give us a home/home and The South Plains Drifter did slightly referenced that but he should have made a bigger deal about the horny toads not wanting to come to the Jones…..Also, being in sec land I think it is highly unlikely that more than 2 teams from the big12-2 would be invited in……that means ou and atm……sec really seems to want in the Texas market…….but also a local sports station here had the ou rival’s guy on the other day and he indicated the ou fan base seems to be split with a good % wanting to go to be in the Pac 16 and be the big dog not just coming to the sec and having to fight it out with alabama/lsu/florida……will be interesting to see what transpires…..also, new season, a time to give Scotty Smith a new start (especially with Rumph/Coleman defections) and TSPD needs to lay down the law but allow Smith the chance to start the year on the active roster…..So “Free Scotty”! Wreck’Em Tec

Isnt the game a fullfillment of a contract of Home and Homes ? They played in Lubbock twice and we played in FtWt once ?
Hey Tubs this is the Wild West, Good guys wear white, were the Red Raiders we wear BLACK. ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Dont buy the Espn/Disney/ABC hype ! Playoffs are just spin to hide their agenda of owning our favorite sport.
This was a new contract....
and the 70-35 game in the Jones was a stand alone game…..we fulfilled our home/home and remember that was one Harrell’s worst games….but the frogs have deceide to treat us like Texas state so to me it wasn’t about winning or losing but their attitude….I will say if TTU would join the big east with tcu then I’ll play them every year for the bsc, i mean bcs bid!!! Wreck’Em Tech
Harrell outmatched
a result of the 4-2-5 no doubt !

And further lessens his chances of ever getting another job for any university since you know they all have administrations

Guess
he doesn’t need you as his agent….but then again you think his arrow was pointing down with his 28 wins in his last 3 years.

29 wins
Or does he not get credit for the Alamo Bowl victory?

Yeah....
good call, it should be 29 with the Alamo w. But you realize he had peaked at tech and it was better he go?

You see, the horse is not actually dead. It looks dead, but really it’s just not. And while kicking it a few more times will neither bring it back to health, nor cause it to finally die – somehow kicking it is just plain old fun in it’s own right.

I hear that he would never have taken us to the next level.
Which means that any other coach would have taken us there. Makes perfect sense, if you are visiting Wonderland with Alice.

Wow again.
Seems like Leach was prevented from covering Big 12 media days for his radio show.

Looking at the picture at the top...
Texas Tech sure beats the stuffing outa the Ags in the cheerleading department! Just sayin’, ya know.
Looks to me like the Bear is ready to eat those Aggies.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
I like Tech
but I am sure the majority of the Tech students hate UT. :-) But, I will give my opinions anyway.
The big dustup by AtM over the LHN is typical of the ags. I will give Tech credit that they seem to be non-plussed over the network. I find it amusing that AtM considers themselves to me more significant than Tech and more of a desired program, by the SEC.
I dont see it myself – I will say they are the biggest bunch of whiners the country has ever seen.
Also, I think 15th in the recruiting ranking is a bit low. Tubs has done a great job of recruiting and is hauling in a damned respectable class, in my opinion.

I give the ags kudos for their stand opposite what we know of the LHN's programing plans....
kudos !!!

Really?
And why is that? If Tech had the opportunity to have a “TTN” would you feel the same?
"you can't be a great defense in a casual manner!" Manny Diaz
I've got no problem with UT having their own network. Hell, more power to them.
But I do think that it would be flat out stupid to let the LHN show anything they please just because they say it’s all right. High school games should be off limits for any school or conference network based on the rules of the NCAA, plain and simple. If TTU ever has their own network I’d feel the same. Now, I might keep it to myself if we were talking about the TTUN right now, but I’d now that was wrong all the same.

My personal take is...
that I would agree as far as high school is concerned – but only if the games were a straight ESPN promotion of UT prospects. I would also submit, if UT coaches were using LHN, as a recruiting tool, that it would be tantamount to oblique cheating and I would be against it.
Look, nobody in thier right mind should object to ANY college cutting deals like UT has done – anyone of them would jump at the chance should they have one. Texas Tech would be no exception. As long as it is on the up and up – so what?
The problem has been two of UT’s most hated rivals boo hooing because THEY weren’t canny enough to do it themselves and if they can’t have it, they don’t want UT to have it either. Socialism at it’s best.
Furthermore, UT is NOT the program director for this network – ESPN is. This whole thing has not even materialized yet and AtM is frothing at the mouth and stamping their feet and wanting to take their football and run. What is the old saying, “when the going gets tough….?” Ah well – it’s a pattern.

Nonsense. The Pac 12 wouldn't allow the Horns to join them & create their own network
Creating a private network for one school makes that school by definition a bad conference partner. It takes away the incentive to create a Big 12 Network where each conference school gets an equal share. That is the Big 10, SEC and Pac 12 model. Beebe hasn’t even whispered about any plans to create a Big 12 Network.
What does this mean for the 9 schools not named The University of Texas? They will be the only 9 major conference schools without a cable TV presence. And all because Texas doesn’t play nice with others. If the Horns want to go independent, I wish they would do it sooner rather than later. They’ve been acting like an independent for 10 years now. Good riddance.

Take it a little further. Maybe UT should take all profits made by the school and devide them equally amongst the rest of the conference – including the also rans? In addition, UT should share, equally, all 3,4 and 5 star recruits with the rest of the conference.
Moreover, all financial endowments made by grads should also be shared equally with the other conference schools. And, no coach should be paid more than the least paid in the conference.
Does this sound ridiculous? Well, at what point will the rest of the conference be satisfied? Where is the stopping point and what criteria will be used?
And, yes, Wimbleton – I know the meaning of socialism – I just described it!
"you can't be a great defense in a casual manner!" Manny Diaz
Seriously, just go away, leave the conference & take Mack Brown & all his spoiled divas with you
The NFL must be the most socialistic organization in America. They divide revenue equally. They deploy talent equally. They ensure athetic competitiveness for all teams. So a tiny market team like the Green Bay Packers can still win Super Bowls. Socialism (or what passes for it in your short sighted brain) is what makes the NFL the greatest & most popular sport in the nation. You Horns want to be the NY Yankees. Fine, but who gives a rats ass about MLB anymore since the Yankees started buying all the best players from the small market teams? Not me.
Face it, you guys are bad for college football & you are cancer for the Big 12 Conference. Just leave already.
If you're talking to Coach Rainman, whatever you do don't bring up the subject of weather.
So, what happens to Tech if we leave?
And I take it you support socialism as well?

As has been stated before – Tech will find a home somewhere. Whether it’s better, worse or comparable – who knows. But I’d garner that self determination might be reward enough to some extent- it’s getting to where it feels that way.
But, more importantly, what happens to UT if they go? As also has been stated by a handful of others – the only place that UT could possibly go at this point would be Indy or SEC. Both would be disastrous for UT. SEC, would hurt UT because they won’t gain much in the way of money, per se, and they would quickly find out that it was the Big 12 conference itself that allowed them to look top 5 every year. In the SEC – they would become Georgia or Tennessee at best and it would be rare for them to ever end a season with less than 2 losses. And if they go Indy, they will quickly find out that they have trouble fielding a respectable schedule year in and year out, that they don’t have the national appeal they think they have without the Big 12 as part of their identity and that the first time they hired a David McWilliams after Brown retires that they are lonely and cold and all by them selves with no media interest. Texas can not play a mountain west level of schedule for long and expect to be highly regarded for long. Especially when they get knocked off by one of those teams.

I should have included..
like I said – I like Tech and I hope they will always be a part of any conference UT is in. I also said, I think it would be a humongous mistake for UT to go indy. I most fervently believe this.
My hope is, and I have heard rumors, that Tech, UT, ou, BYU, Notre Dame, and USC explore the possiblities of another conference alltogether.
This seems far fetched to me, but who knows?
UT is not going to the SEC and the only reason that AtM wants to go is to get out from under the shadow of UT – where they have resided for 100 years. My feeling is it would be the death knell for aggy, ala Arkansas which never returned to the national prominance it enjoyed with the SWC.
