ATTENTION! Tech is moving to the Power I !!!!
This dude has no clue what he is talking about. read this. fuss, cuss, discuss.
Tuberville wants to transition the Red Raiders out of the spread attack into a much more conventional run-first offense. He didn’t really have much of choice but to continue to throw all over opposing defenses last year, but with the loss of quarterback Taylor Potts and their top two wideouts, look for Texas Tech to really focus on running the football in 2011.
Offense
With Potts taking the snaps, the Red Raiders featured an explosive offense that averaged 33.1 ppg and 460 yards of total offense. Potts was a big reason for that, throwing for 3,726 yards with 35 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions. Heading into the fall it looks like junior Seth Dodge will be the new starting quarterback. Dodge has shown signs that he has what it takes to lead this offense, but don’t expect him to put up anywhere near the numbers the Potts did in 2010.
With the emphasis the Red Raiders figure to put on the ground game this season, Stephens should easily top the 1,000-yard mark.
With the loss of Lyle Leong and Detron Lewis the Red Raiders aren’t left with a lot of talent at the receiver position. They do bring back junior Alexander Torres and senior Traman Swindall, but neither has the talent of Leong or Lewis. This would be a big problem for the Red Raiders if they were still planning on using the spread attack, but they simply need a couple players to step up and be able to make the big catch when needed.
While the Red Raiders lose a ton of talent at the skill positions, they return all five starters on the offensive line. This is exactly what Texas Tech needs to really get the ground game going in 2011
2011 Prediction:
Eighth in the Big 12. This will be an interesting season for the Red Raiders, as we will really get a good look at what Tubberville wants to do with this football team. While I don’t have the Texas Tech picked to finish well in the Big 12, this team has put together 18 consecutive winning seasons. My expectation is for Texas Tech to finish 4-5 in the Big 12 and 7-5 overall.

What? What about the Big Mac Blog?
sportsblogs,star-telegram.com/mac-engel. (I wish I could link)
Seems Tuberville is saying we aren’t playingTCU because they are too deep and we are too young – we can’t win? Hopefully we can play them some time later time? 2015? We aren’t good enough?
Excuses again? I hope I mis-reading this. Correct if needed.
I think you are "slightly" misreading him....
He’s saying that the schedule, the open slot we needed to fill, fell on that date. So TCU got bumped. But then he did what he does and it gets garbled.
On the one hand I think he’s just indicating that it wouldn’t be the most favorable situation for this particular team at that particular time. And then he says, in his own confusing way, that of course we do want to play them.
I hate to bag on him on this one, because for all of the politics he’s accused of – and a lot of folks hang him out to dry for be a politician – he always seems to get into trouble for his honesty. Like what he said about the Big 12 last year. His entire career is a series of getting into trouble for saying what was on his mind. Honestly – I find that to be very Pirate like , and I like it.
At this stage, and after what I witnessed last year – I know that I don’t mind not having to play TCU at that point of the season. This year has more than enough challenges for our guys IMHO.
But,
does that mean we shouldn’t be playing OU, A&M, etc. now either. When are we gonna be good enough?
Thanks for responding, that just concerned me. Without direct clear quotes, I guess I just go for the ‘bad’ news .. so thanks again.
At first glance it threw me off as well.
It’s not about when we are going to be good enough, It’s more about what is best in a strategic sense. I do think we need the time to get our act together right now. That is the whole point of the out of conference schedule. It is a platform to prepare for the conference. I wouldn’t advocate playing UT or OU that early this year either. But, the way this year schedule falls out – I think it’s perfect that we have until the 6th game before we meet any of the big boys. (Which hurts me to say because it’s A&M and I don’t like saying they are any good.)
I think that there is a fair chance that we could beat TCU if we played them at that time, but I also think there is a very good chance that they could beat us. They are a proven commodity at this point and have proven that they can just reload. We are a complete unknown this year, really, and aren’t even sure what we have this year. (In players and in coaches) I think that when you look at the big picture – and I’m only talking about this team, this year and at that point – it is a good thing that we don’t have to. These guys really do need more time (than they will next year) to jell and to adjust to the new D.
Time will tell...
whether or not we completely abandon the Air Raid. Keep in mind that Tubs hired Neal Brown for a reason. If he wanted to completely transform to a grind it out run all the time offense – he’d direct his focus on hiring an OC that has a track record of doing so. I wouldn’t get too excited… Also, the article is more than obvious about Doege – he should throw for at least 1,000 yards (wow, going out on a limb there). I’d think Doege is good for at least 3K this year. We will be certainly more focused on running, but still expect a predominately pass first focus.
The key is that you work with what you got. If you have a stable of stud RBs… why wouldn’t you run more? Please tell me you didn’t think we got these guys because they block well? Lol. If you have a running force then run more. If our unknown WRs end up being the work horses… Then throw.
I don’t care if we win every game 50 – 0 or 7-3. The point of the game is to win. Style points don’t matter. Just the W/L column.
I’m interested to see how Media day panned out. I’m sure all the focus will still be on the LHN.

receivers

This would be a big problem for the Red Raiders if they were still planning on using the spread attack, but they simply need a couple players to step up and be able to make the big catch when needed.
if this guys were to do his homework he’d see that Torres was better than both of them his freshman year. Plus nothing against Leong but where was he his sophmore and junior year. He came out of nowhere and improved his senior year as i would expect Swindall to do. There is a ton of talent at receiver.
Whoever said, 'It's not whether you win or lose that counts,' probably lost.
Stephens
60% pass 40% run.
There is no way stephens gets enough touches to get 1000.
Especially with all the other backs that will get some playing time.
I hope im wrong.
Whoever said, 'It's not whether you win or lose that counts,' probably lost.
who is this chap and what part of china is he from?.....
to say we have no or little talent at receiver has got to be one of the most unbelievably wrong statments i have ever heard……and +1 with techcuz…..I also think our inside receivers will be huge this year….Zoo/Marquez/hopefully corndog! Wreck’Em Tech
Doege
Am I the only one who is concerned about Doege’s total lack of experience? Other than Kansas start he last played as a sophomore at Crane! Looks like disaster to me.
8th..
…Really?
Email saved to my contacts so when we actually start playing football, and starting winning games, this guy will get a kindly, well-written email sent to his inbox.
"Why not us?" '04+'07='11.
I actually believe in Tommy Tuberville.
Hold the reins Crossfire;
I believe that Tubby wants to run more, but I don’t believe he goes out and hires Neal Brown to run the I formation. I have met NB and spoken to him at length. Unless he is misleading me, he claims that Tubby just wants to run more effective, but wants to keep air raid. He has said that when you need a yard, you can’t rely on the passing game. I get that.
In my opinion, I really don’t care how we win. I would love to see us put up 50 points a game and hold our opponents to 10 points a game, and that might be possible. If Tubby can fill The Jones and we can still throw tortillas, tear down goal posts, fight with aTm, then I’m on board.
Your prediction might be dead on. This is going to be a tough year. Playing Texas, OU, and Misssouri on the road is tough in any year. Both the Aggies and Cowboys are where we were in 08, they are going to be tough home games. Which means that we can’t slip bu against anyone else, and when you have a bunch of 18-22 year old kids, anything can happen. So I will be over the top with a 9-3 season, but disappointed with anything less than 8-4.
Another Red Raider First Down.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
Im practicing yellow journalism, with a hint of sarcasm
Im with you, I believe that if Tubs wanted to get rid of the Air Raid, he would not have hired an Air Raid Prodigy. NB Played in it, and Coached it up. Troy was always a dangerous team with him there, offensively at least.
Just amazed that this guy who wrote this article would actually think Tuberville is dumb enough to scrap the offense that put Tech on the map and made them what they are, just because he wants to run the ball, Tubs is smarter than that.

The Power-I Formation
Though it is extremely unlikely for Tech to move towards a power running offense, that does not mean you can not score and put up big numbers. Just look at Wisconsin for an example of how to score 83 points against Northwestern.
Doege....
My only concern here is just as it has been with the other first year qB’s we have had since 2000……he will be fine…..I like that we have our 3 non-conf. games first and that gives him some experience….also all 5 of OL is back and if they can stay healthy then Doege will be just fine……and unlike some of the QB’s in the past I do like the RB’s we have and can utulize them more….again no talent @ WR? Let’s see the best JC WR last year(got on campus in spring) Zou/Corndog/Swindall in system fr @ least 3 yrs. and oh Torres( I guess he really isn’t too good) and probably the best Fr. Tight End in the Country……Wreck’Em Tech
No Worries
I am not concerned about Doege. Tech has had many first year QB’s that have done fine. Especially that string of 5th year seniors. Most of them had less college experience than Doege. Several years of not playing as well. He at least has one college start.

Hey Guys
I found the article:
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/767963-2011-texas-tech-red-raiders-college-football-predictions
Also if you follow the link at the end of that article it sends you to his website where he goes more in depth as Jack continues to talk out of this “ignorance” he predicts:
“This has the makings of a 3-6 team at best in Big 12 play in 2011, but my best guess is 2-7.” – Jack Jones
You just have to believe his site is a front for laundering money because there is no way people are going to win anything with this guy’s advice. Of course he is an “expert” and I am just a Tech student who faithfully follows the Red Raiders ….
First mistake was looking at anything that says bleacher report

Do a Little Research - Would You?
Here’s what Tech has returning at receiver, with stats from last year
Franks – 25 catches, 254 yds
Torres – 39 catches, 481 yds, 3 TDs
Swindall – 33 catches, 271 yds, 1 TD
Zouzalik – 31 catches 432 yds, 2 TDs
Moore – 15 catches, 117 yds, 1 TD
Douglas – 20 catches, 215 yds, 1 TD
Sure, Tech lost a couple of great receivers in Lewis and Leong. But we all know that 9-10 guys make catches in almost every game. It’s not just 2 guys….and the above stats prove that.
Plus Amaro, Grant, and the McRoy brothers waiting in the wings to make an impact.
+1
and its always been that way with the exception of crabtree’s years. Spreading the ball around is what has always made tech successful. We may have two top receivers emerge this year but I don’t think their numbers are gonna be that much better than our number 3 and 4 options.
The only reason Leong’s numbers were so good was because potts would only look in Leong’s direction.
Whoever said, 'It's not whether you win or lose that counts,' probably lost.
I dont believe we this but
Tubs wants to run the ball he does not like the passing game which is where we succeeded last year. He wants to throw 60% or less depending on the run last year we fell behind in most games and were forced to throw more often to try to stay in it.
He knew what he was getting when he took over the team is this the reason he picked Neal Brown. If he would have picks a run and grind oc we would have been worse than what I think our bad record indicated.
TCU he dropped this game knowing he probably could not win TCU would love to pick on a big conference school and Tech is doing its 3rd defense in 3 years and I think the offense is changing more this year …. UNM we may need an easy win to make a bowl game TCU gets dropped.
Big 12 -2 is looking ugly this year with the oklahomas and UT will be much improved and A&M projected a 9 win season there is little room for error. I hate to say it but I do think Tech will come in bottom half of the conference this year.
My thoughts on it
my question....
why did he hire Neal Brown if he wanted to run more?

I believe it was a condition of employment
One smart thing the bell tower boys did was tell Tubs that a spread passing attack is the Texas Tech brand & he would have to retain it as HC. Now would he be devious enough to undermine it in order to go back to them & say, “See, it just doesn’t work. Can I change now?”. I think the spread is here to stay. It really is what Texas Tech football is known for. Spock has pointy ears and Texas Tech throws the ball. Take away the pointy ears & all you have is another random faceless actor.
If you're talking to Coach Rainman, whatever you do don't bring up the subject of weather.
Brown had experience with spread … Tubs lost his job last time he tried to run it.
@mbrown
I do believe Tech is known for the spread but I do fear that Tubs would like to run the ball more. The difference with the 2 is Tubs would like to run to set up the pass and many Tech fans have gotten used to passing to set up the run.
Time will tell
Yeah, but his last employer fired him for not having it;
Oh, and for extra pain and suffering, Auburn won a NC with the spread just a few years removed.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
That must have been bittersweet
Half the team & most of the starteers were guys he recruited. Maybe he’ll absorb the lesson to embrace change on offense, especially since defense is his specialty. Get out of the way & let the spread gurus do their thing. I don’t think it works as well when the head coach never stops talking about the importance of the run. Yes, the run is important but in the spread you can’t force the run. The defense will tell you when it’s time to run.
If you're talking to Coach Rainman, whatever you do don't bring up the subject of weather.
