Things I'm Excited to See | The Defense
With the start of the season right around the corner, I'm excited about a number of things heading into the season and I oftentimes think about what I'm most excited to see this year. These are the things I'm excited to see this year and absolutely will love to see what you're excited to see. The topics that I'll cover are the offense in general, the defense in general, the special teams, the newcomers and the veterans.
How the 4-2-5 Will Literally Work
I've written extensively about the 4-2-5 and I think as a result of that, we're all better off having taken a look at the various principles of the 4-2-5. The one thing that I haven't even touched is exactly how it's all going to work. I'm excited to know that the actual implementation of the defense only takes three days, that it's a relatively simple scheme to understand and that part of the simplicity is that the defense is able to make calls that are independent of various position groups. But most importantly, I'm most excited to see how this works. I really want to re-watch the spring game to see if I can pin-point any of those things that I saw and make sense of what I think Glasgow is trying to do. Not only that, with only having a couple of weeks worth of practice, I'm excited to see what Glasgow can do with more time to actually teach the various stunts, twists and blitzes that can make this defense difficult for offenses to stop and unpredictable. Bottom line, I want to see it happen on the field. My only concern, and granted I shouldn't be writing about concerns in a post where I'm supposed to be writing about things I'm excited about, is whether or not this defense will be hampered by having to play three different defensive schemes in three years. Still, I think that the defensive players are young enough to simply put last year behind them and chalk last year's 3-4 experiment what it was. Just not the right personnel to do what was asked of them.
The Maturation of Tre' Porter
I think Tre' Porter gets overlooked. As a true freshman last year, playing both safety and cornerback, he was 3rd on the team in tackles with 76, 1 interception, 4.0 tackles for a loss, and 6 passes broken up. The only other transition that may be more difficult than cornerback is probably quarterback and for Porter to make that big of an impact so early in his career makes me think that a permanent move to cornerback is only going to help. Additionally, Porter may be the best athlete on the team (apologizes to all other players that may take offense to that) and for the coaching staff to feel that he can be burdened last year as a true freshman with the task of learning two positions plus the staff thinking that as a true freshman he had no fear in hitting opposing player and playing safety. The cornerback position was ravaged last year and I think there's tremendous value in having a player of Porter's caliber settling in one position is going to pay off in a big way for this team.
More, after the jump.
A Deep and Talented Defensive Line
The depth at defensive line is almost completely unproven, but there are a lot of players that have the potential to contribute and be part of a rotation of defensive linemen that all play and all hopefully wear down opponents. I keep thinking that with all of the injuries last year, it afforded a handful of players the opportunity to receive some snaps that will pay off this year and into the future.
Just for reference purposes, here's a list of the defensive tackles and nose guards:
Chris Perry SR (6-4/309)
Coby Coleman RS FR (6-2/317)
Pearlie Graves SO (6-2/286)
Donald Langley SR (6-2/274)
Kerry Hyder SO (6-2/265)
Lawrence Rumph SR (6-3/284)
Dennell Wesley JR (6-3/315)
Delvon Simmons FR (6-5/265)
Donte Phillips FR (6-3/260)
And defensive ends:
Aundrey Barr SO (6-2/230)
Dartwan Bush SO (6-1/248)
Christopher Knighton SO (6-1/250)
Jackson Richards RS FR (6-3/248)
Scott Smith SR (6-6/266)
Leon Mackey JR (6-5/260)
Kindred Evans FR (6-5/215)
Branden Jackson FR (6-6/220)
Cooper Washington FR (6-4/225)
This assumes that Sam Fehoko doesn't play at defensive end, which he might, but I still say he's better suited to play linebacker.
So what does all of this mean, well, there are nine defensive tackles or nose guards for just two spots and nine defensive ends for two spots. They all can't play at the same time, and to have 18 scholarship spots for just two positions probably tells you how much this staff values the defensive line position. I like that.
In all honesty, I think that of the nine available defensive tackles and nose guards, you probably will not see Phillips or Coleman this year. I still think that Coleman could use an additional year to lay low until Langley and Rumph graduate. That still gives Glasgow and Prunty seven players to rotate in and out of that rotation.
At defensive end, I think we've all figured out that Smith will be suspended for the first four games and realistically speaking, I think that Evans, Jackson and Washington will all redshirt this year. Even without Smith, this still leaves a rotation of Barr, Bush, and Richards, with Mackey being the wildcard. I think Mackey is going to shine, and when Smith becomes eligible, you can have both of them on the field at the same time, or you can them rotate throughout the game. And we haven't even talked about Bush, who may be the best natural pass-rusher amongst the bunch and Richards, who has yet to take a snap.
[Note by Seth C, 07/27/11 10:28 AM CDT ] Sorry, I wrote this over the weekend and forgot to revise it this morning. Please ignore references to Coleman and Rumph.
Now it's your turn. Tell me what you're excited to see on defense this year.

Rumph & Coleman
If these two do not play and/or are gone, this position of DT/NG needs every other player to be eligible and available. If as many redshirt as you expect, the positions could be thin in depth, so we still may see more freshmen play than anticipated.

A significant improvement from all....
Uncharacteristic mistake today Seth, but I guess an oversight including Coleman & Rumpy. Still, enough depth there without those 2 dropouts to be comfortable, numerous injuries aside…
Agree hugely on Tre Porter, the guy will make a living out of this game, and will be a joy to watch for the next 3 years…
BOOKENDS – Mackey and (Free) Scotty coming off the ends will be awesome watching, 10 sacks each please chaps (15 for Smith if the Free Scotty campaign works, hugely doubtful mind)…
Pearlie Graves becoming an absolute stud. He has shown good flashes thus far, if he can be disruptive throughout games, he will be a significant difference maker, and no doubt make a few quid for himself when his 4 years are up. If he does do this, I have every faith that Wesley, Simmons, Langley, Hyder et al will have great seasons too..
Sam Fehoko to do what we’ve all expected him to do for some time. The linebackers are totally unheralded this year, but i have a hunch that Sam will be everywhere from LB, wracking up tackles, smashing the balls loose, punishing the foolhardy scrambling qb’s. If not, Dees looks more than capable of filling in this role. Hubert will be sound..
Top 50 D would be nice…
Yeah baby FreeScotty !!

looking forward to seeing
team speed being used in the 4-2-5….last year was a low point for me for tech defense because we didn’t have the comfort of knowing that our offense was going to cover it.
In Chad I trust…..

I want a confident and solid run game.
I’m not saying to deviate from our current 60-40 ratio, but when we do run I want it done with authority. Anytime we need 1-3 yards we can hand it off and let one of our RBs pound it for a first. Also, I hate the stupid shovel pass. I wish to God we would stop running that garbage. It seldom works and fools nobody. I’d love to see a RB step up this year that can put his head down and bull doze if needed. We have the ability.
Also, I’m looking forward to Chad Glasgow kick ass and take names. He’s a rookie DC on this level and has a lot to prove. Even if expectations are low – he seems like a guy that puts a lot of pressure on himself. I think he’ll be tremendous towards are journey to success.

Excite..yeah we got some..
The 4-2-5 is going to exciting because it’s going to raise the bar. Simply put I think the Raiders have the personnel packages to go with it. To run it effectively. Enough down linemen ( as long as we – Free Scotty) to keep a healthy front 4 rotation going, enough safeties to enforce the run stops and enough Linebackers to over pressure on the throwing downs and get the 5th man a free rush at the QB in 3rd and long.
I watched the Wisconsin vs TCU Rose Bowl again last weekend and will post an analysis of what TCU was doing defensively as this should give us some insight as to how the defense might break thru the magical barrier of being above the 50th ranked defense before the dust settles on the Big 12 season. I was excited last year with Coach Willis (premature) and though we could all be disappointed by Coach Glasgow’s production I feel this scheme fits the type folks we have on the South Plains. I don’t think any offense we are going to face in League play has a better mix than we do defensively except OU and OSU. aTm will be good but not better than what we can field. At least we shouldn’t be overmatched by the Aggies.. Especially with a Free Scotty.. Everyone else has significant O line, RB, Wideout or QB turnover / newbie’s on the field. Now It could play out in a surprise like Baylor’s 2011 team in particular but the losses and restructuring versus the disruption capability of 4 – 2 – 5 scheme with some speed on the field for the Raiders should take away the offensive advantage or least nullify the things they like to do. So that being said Free Scotty.

I am most excited
To see if this coaching staff learned something about how to coach in the Big 12 last year. I want to see if the Boy Genius can finally get into the heads of some of these good Big 12 defensive coordinators and F somebody up!
I want to know if the TCU 4-2-5 really is that easy to teach, “so easy even a caveman can do it”, or if a copy is really not as good as the original. (The Air Raid if you will…) Either way, it has to be better than the 3-4 we trotted out on the field last season.
But most of all, even though I know it might not be this year, I know I am excited to see these two gents finally unleashed on the Big 12

I am even looking forward to punt returns this year if one of these two guys gets that duty!

Ready to see Glasgow work some magic...
and to see Tre’ Porter made some big time hits! AND…come on Seth, you’re not allowed mistakes, don’t you know that?!
Seriously...
isn’t everyone excited about the seeing Smith/Mackey @ DE? I really do think with what talent TTU has the 4-2-5 will be a great scheme!!!! Can’t wait to see Davis crack some heads as a S/LB…..Remember we need Smith/Mackey in the Texas State game!!! “Free Scotty”! Wreck’Em Tech
excited to see DJ Johnson at his natural position
He had a tough season and I like to see a good kid bounce back
Smith & Mackey
Should be a great combo on the field on 3rd & longs. Wish Smith had the right motivation, he coulda been all big 12 last year.

4-2-5
IMO, I think it will take this unit about a month to start really grasping the attack side of this defense. Initially it is going to be more or less a bend but don’t break scheme in the first 3 games, so despite the threat of any offensive juggernauts in the warm-up games other than Nevada having the potential to run for 200-300 yards, if they click with the replacement for the Angry Ostrich. I see our Defensive Stats getting better week to week, as the Safeties learn how they are backbone for attack side of this defense. IMO we will finish in the top 40 defensive units by the end of the year, but it will be week to week grind to get there. In 2012, if Glasgow gets the play calling aspect down, this defense will produce. This scheme has produced 2 of the top 3 rated Total Defense Stats in Div 1 last two years running.
Question is will Coach Glasgow be free to release the attack of the Safeties?

I think it will be Prid Pro Quo,
in that if Catfish Jesus actually Frees Scotty, then Glasgow must be free to call in the attack of the Safeties!
Either way, I think a blitz attack from the 4-2-5 will be much more palatable to all Red Raider fans since it will not leave our corners on an island like Willis did every other defensive call last year.
/shudders thinking about True Freshman trying to man up Justin Blockmon and his 10 receptions over 200 yards in a game.

Great observations from everyone!
I have visions of Landry Jones and Ryan Tannehill running for their life. FREE SCOTTY!!!!!
Lots of potential
I’m most interested to see just how far the defense can turn it around in one season given all the changes (DC, scheme, personnel). Opinions range from a little to a whole lot. Count me cautiously optimistic. Not expecting miracles, but there must be progress.
Re: the Free Scotty campaign. More power to you all and I appreciate the sentiment. We all want Tech to field the best team possible. However, not knowing anything about the situation, I’m willing to trust that TT and staff will do whatever is appropriate for Mr. Smith and the team.
It's hard not being optimistic about the defense after last year
They were the worst defense in college football in 2010. They can’t do any worse this year. Which means we have signs of improvement to look forward to this year. It’s the only sure thing about this fall. That the defense will improve.
If you're talking to Coach Rainman, whatever you do don't bring up the subject of weather.
Well, worst by some measures
but not all. In any case, the defense will almost certainly move up in rank for 2011. The big question (and reason for excitement) is: How far??
Overall Defense we ranked 114th
Aren’t there 120 FBS schools total? I don’t ever want to see Tech ranked in the triple digits in anything FBS ever again.
If you're talking to Coach Rainman, whatever you do don't bring up the subject of weather.
Here is what I find funny about the 2010 Texas Tech season. During the season, game after game Tech fans argued endlessly about new wrinkles in the spread offense as called by new OC Neal Brown. We ranted about the unimaginative play calling & whether Tuberville was forcing Brown to run up the middle for 1 yard every 1st down or whether that was Neal Brown’s fault. Not once during the season did I hear any Tech fan comment on how the defense was playing, good or bad. Tech’s defense fell from the low 30’s under Ruffin McNeil to #114th out of 120 FBS schools. Tech fans are so offensive minded Tuberville & Willis got a complete pass on completely destroying a top third defense.
If you're talking to Coach Rainman, whatever you do don't bring up the subject of weather.
The defense frustrated me to no end last season
and no reasonable person would think it was acceptable. But I found Tech’s national ranking in several areas to be of interest:
Yardage Allowed – 114 Yardage Gained – 15
Points Allowed – 93 Points Scored – 23
Turnovers Gained – 49 Turnovers Lost – 88
3rd Down Conv. Def. – 22 3rd Down Conv. – 35
4th Down Conv. Def. – 69 4th Down Conv. – 81
Red Zone Defense – 40 Red Zone Offense – 66
Points may be the most important category here, but the defense did outrank the offense in a number of areas.
just my point.....
he has served a 9 game suspension…all I’m asking for is to give Smith a chance to really step it up and be a real leader on this D!!!!. If he screws up fine then suspend him longer I’m just not sure that it does anyone any good to suspend a Juco Sr. for 4 games into the next season after the inital suspension if he has played by the rules and keep his nose clean….If he messed up again then as fan base I would like to know that(not what he did but that there were more team infractions) and fans could be ready…..I’m just asking for a chance…….Smith/Mackey looks really good @ DE if he has paid his dues! “Free Scotty” Wreck’Em Tech
I've been a Tre Porter fan from the moment he walked/ran on the field
…With a better expected rush up front, he will have a banner year. Are you ready for some football!
"Sure, luck means a lot in football. Not having a good quarterback is bad luck." Don Shula
A Hard Hitting, Competitive Defense
Is absolutely needed. A defense capable of winning the game if the offense is kept under twenty points. It’s been a long time since the defense has been capable of that.
I’m excited about virtually all of the new players and our returning players as well. Porter, Johnson, Davis, Hubert, Smith, Richards, …. I want to see a hungry bunch of Red Raiders fight like Hell on defense. Make offenses earn every freaking inch. Never quit!!
Patience is needed on any new player who has an available redshirt because I still think you have to be patient and let these kids mature as much as possible before you start burning their eligibility.
What made our last year defense so bad was.....
The refusal of Willis to make in-game and season-long adjustments. No one should continue to run what simply does not work. Talk about old (real old) school. If Glasgow recognizes any problematic schemes in the defense, he must be willing to make the necessary changes to get it back on track. Otherwise, we could be looking 2010 in the eye all over again. Above statements are correct: McNeil was making possitive moves as the season progressed to help the players get better results. That all blew up last year. I am expecting Glasgow to be smarter and make those needed moves and adjustments. If he does, then we will see the defense trending in the same direction Ruff had it going. Then, if we can hold on to all the coaches, especially the coordinators, for a few years, I think we will get to experience some runs at a National Championship.

I wanna see a defense that's blood thirsty.
I want injuries to the other team. I want Dwayne Slay hits across the board. I want blitzes to be overdone and effective. I’d rather a mobile QB not get the chance to scramble but rather get smashed in the pocket. I want LB’s that are able to stuff the f*** out of the run. I want anybody making a tackle to drive thru the opponent and nail their ass to the ground. I want broken bones and bloody jerseys. I want our secondary to jam off the line, turn and press. I want helmets flying off. I want the skill players on the opposing offense crying, hard.
Is that a lot of wants? Hell yeah it is. Is it possible? Absolutely.
