Red Raider Gridiron | Texas Tech at the Big 12 Media Days

Anytime there's a big event, like Big 12 Media Days, it's always tough for me to figure out where to start. The are so many stories and I'm bound to miss something. There are a ton of topics to cover, I'm going to cover a handful of topics, but feel free to add in the comments.

Tuberville Dishes

Texas Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville's transcript (PDF) from his opening remarks have caught a lot of attention. There were only a handful of questions, one of those questions was about not playing TCU. Most of you have already had a field day with this and I know that TCU fans think that Texas Tech is simply avoiding TCU, Tuberville didn't do much to quiet this discussion. The one thing that is seemingly lost of a lot of this was that TCU wasn't willing to agree to a home and home series. It was a one game series with TCU with no return game in Lubbock. It's fine to schedule non-conference opponents, but there has to be a return game.

In any event, here's Tuberville's quote:

That's really probably not the type of team we want to play right now. Not that we didn't want to play them. It was obvious that we had somebody had to go in that slot where they were at, you know, pretty much fit what we needed to do. If they had been in another slot maybe in one of the other non-conference positions, we would have still been playing that game. But somebody had to go. And, again, hopefully we can play -- I think that's a natural game for us. I think we need to play that game. I think it needs to be a home and home game, and I think that it would help both Gary and us to play each year.

I don't think that Tuberville says that he's afraid to play anyone, but Tuberville emphasizes the idea that the series needs to be a home and home game. It wasn't and I'm still okay with Texas Tech backing out when TCU wasn't going to show any reciprocity to return to Lubbock.

[Note by Seth C, 07/27/11 6:29 AM CDT ] I wanted to add one additional item.  The fact that Texas Tech and TCU are not playing isn't really news.  It was news way back in January and I went back and found where then Texas Tech AD Gerald Myers confirmed that the problem was that Texas Tech and TCU couldn't match up their schedules to play in connectutive years:

“We tried to work out to play ’11 and ’12,” Myers said. “We couldn’t work out the dates on the consecutive years, so we made a proposal to play in ’15 and ’16. We did not want to play one now and one in ’16.”

Asked why, Myers said, “We just didn’t want to have five years in between games. A lot of things can change. We wanted them in consecutive years.”

[End Note]

Tuberville also briefly talked about the defense and QB Seth Doege, but honestly, he's said these things since the spring. He's emphasized the speed on defense and Doege being a coach's son. Again, it's nothing new, at least to those that have stuck around all summer. Tuberville talked about how the defense needs to be fast and said that nothing else really matters.

And it kind of reminds me of defenses I've been part of when we've had good success. That's how you win championships. It's not with anything else other than the speed on defense. To give your offense an opportunity not to have to score 100 points to win a game. And that's the mode that we want to get into. And then having depth on defense. We're very short last year. We had to play a receiver in a game at receiver, and then we also had to play in the corner back during the game.

Again, Tuberville has said this before, and Tuberville is also quick to point out that the defense is young, and relatively inexperienced. That is still a true statement, even with all of the freshmen and redshirt freshmen playing last year, it's still a relatively young defense.

And despite some thought that Tuberville isn't honest, I think that yesterday he said that he didn't think that last year was any great accomplishment:

"Your first year, as you go through it, you’ve got so many situations that you try to correct or make better, and we held our head above water," Tuberville said Tuesday. "We won eight games. Won a bowl game. It wasn’t a great year, but it was a year I think we can look back on and say, ‘That was the start of something good.’"

I do think that's accurate. And I think that this is how a lot of you feel. It was a start of something good, but we're all hoping that there's more to come.

Doege Is the Leader Thus Far

I am an unapologetic fan of Seth Doege. I think he's going to be good, but yesterday you got to see that he's humble, he emphasizes the idea that hard work will eventually pay off and the emphasis needs to be on his teammates.

More after the jump.

Star-divide

Tuberville says that Doege is the leader heading into the fall workouts:

You know, it's still going to be a battle in two-a-days. I thought Jacob Karam made as much progress last year as anybody did on our football team in the spring. He's our backup quarterback. Seth is a coach's son. He's been around. He's been through a lot of adversities, persevered through two knee injures. He's the first one at the office every day, workout, lift weights. He gets receivers to practice. He wants to be the guy. He's passionate about football.

Snip

But Seth is -- he probably could have been our quarterback last year. Potts and Sheffield were injured in the first spring practice in my first spring year. Seth got all the snaps along with Jacob Karam, and Seth really knew the offense going into last fall better than Potts and Sheffield because he had more practice time in what we were doing. So it's not going to be a quarterback by committee. Seth is our number one guy, and going into two-a-days he'll be in that situation, not to say it won't change as we go through two-a-days or even through the season.

I think Doege is going to be fine:

"I don't feel pressure so much as excitement," Doege said. "I take this as a challenge, and I know there are great expectations for playing quarterback at Texas Tech. I have high expectations for myself."

Okafor and Davis Are Quiet

This isn't a bad thing and I do think that it's good to see guys like Mickey Okafor and Cody Davis being forced into a spotlight that they're not used to seeing. Still, there's not much print out there on either gentlemen. It's interesting to see Tuberville not make a big deal of the switch to a 4-2-5, but I do think it's a big deal. I do think he's trying to minimize the thought that it's radically different to what was run last year and on some level, Tuberville is right, but on the other hand I think that Davis is right:

"It's all similar in a way," Davis said. "But it's a whole new scheme and a whole new mindset. You are going to notice more speed out there. That's where we have experience at is [with the] safeties. We are going to have a lot on the field so we will have more speed and will fly around to the ball."

And I really couldn't find any direct quotes from Okafor, but did find this video:

Leach Not Credentialed

Yesterday, CBS Sports' Dennis Dodds reported yesterday that former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach was denied access at the Big 12 Media Days for his radio show:

Leach says he was told about the situation by XM producer Matt Fishman. When shown a text from Leach saying the former Tech coach was supposed to do the show from here, Fishman would not comment further.

Leach added, "He [Fishman] told me he heard from the conference ... They didn't want it to be awkward for Tech."

Burda said, "We didn't say he [Leach] couldn't come."

"I was told not to go," Leach said when reached by phone. "That's indisputable. I got a call yesterday and told not to go."

In a text, Leach said, " ... yesterday I was told the conference would not give me a credential because tech was going to be there."

When informed of Burda's comment, Leach texted, "That is not what I was told. You can ask Matt Fishman ... I was supposed to do the radio show on site there until I was told otherwise yesterday."

I know yesterday the FanShot was posted that it was the Texas Tech administration that requested that Leach not be credentialed. It wouldn't surprise me if it was true, it would be awkward, but Dodds' quotes don't indicate that it was Texas Tech and there's dispute as to whether or not Leach was actually denied or not. Nevertheless, I think I like TallMike's comment from that FanShot:

Sticky sticky

Odds and Ends

LAJ's Don Williams did ask Okafor and Doege who they thought was the most impressive freshman and they both agreed it was Jakeen Grant:

"He’s definitely the quickest guy on our team," Doege said. "Between him and maybe the McRoy brothers (Ben and Javares), he might be the fastest. He needs to learn the plays. He needs to get a little stronger, a little bigger, but I think he’s going to play right away."

We'll get back to the normal link post tomorrow.

TCU game

It was very smart to get out of that game, whatever the reason. It is the same reason that no one wants to play tech when they don’t have to. You beat TCU and everybody thinks that is supposed to happen. You get your butt kicked and it sets you back for the entire season. TCU is probably the best coached team in the country. Not a team that anyone wants to play early in the season. I know that OU doesn’t want to do that again.

TCU is one of the best teams in CFB over the past 10 years.
You beat TCU and everybody thinks that is supposed to happen. You get your butt kicked and it sets you back for the entire season.

I think that’s a very 2004 mindset. TCU has been one of the most dominant teams over the past 10 years, have finished ranked in 8 out of the last 10 years, including 7th or higher in the last three, have been to two consecutive BCS bowl games (winning the second against Wisconsin), after two straight undefeated seasons, etc. I don’t want to play them because they won’t reciprocate on a home game, but I also won’t miss the opportunity to test our offense against a defense that good.

But if we did play them, and lose, I don’t think there’s any shame in that, either.

Go register. Or else.

50%

I agree somewhat with what you are saying, but winning games is the focus-not overcoming non-conference challenges (at least in this phase of our growth). We are a young team, with a first year QB and a new D cordinator. I just don’t see why you would subject the guys to this type of risk. Let’s beat up on some people and go into conference with a confident mentality and a healthy team.

I would have much rather had UT about 8 games in last year.

I love TTU vs. TCU

However, there must be a home and home. It doesn’t hurt that we’re not playing them this year, but I’d love to see this matchup rekindled sometime soon.

Thanks Seth for doing all this...

It has become part of my morning routine now. Coffee and DTN.

I am on the Doege train also. I think he will be great. I am very excited to see some of our incoming freshmen and how they will do in fall camp.

“Your first year, as you go through it, you’ve got so many situations that you try to correct or make better, and we held our head above water,” Tuberville said Tuesday. “We won eight games. Won a bowl game. It wasn’t a great year, but it was a year I think we can look back on and say, ‘That was the start of something good.’”

Seth, I am going to parse your choice of words a bit::

I think that yesterday he said that he didn’t think that last year was any great accomplishment:

Because if you ask him, he likely will say that last year’s accomplishments were great—or words to that effect. My point is pretty narrow in that I think he was referring more to the win/loss, and the bowl game itself, all the on-field stull when he said: “it wasn’t a great year.” He did follow the entire set of words, the whole of the thought he was speaking to with: “That was the start of something good.” O.K., good does not = great.

THANK YOU, Thank you, thank you for setting the record straight regarding the schedule differences with TCU. Geeez !

Doege is a likeable guy ! He grins when he is asked about Okafor’s praise then turns the praise to Okafor and the OL. There is little doubt that he is being groomed and being asked to lead as qb right now and has been doing so all off season…that is part of why a staff who cannot participate wants a named qb, they want a leader in the locker room.

Okafor clearly has high regard for Graham Harrell as a qb. I liked his interview, he is really laid back, answered the questions quickly, without hesitation, with poise and moved on…probably just like he would kick your butt on the football field.

LOL, I listened with great interest to Mike Leach’s radio interview yesterday…he is still peeing on his dog. He is clearly angry, anyone would be. On the other hand, had I been head of PR for TTU, I doubt that I would have wanted him available to ask pointed questions of the HC or players in this venue. There is a law suit pending.

Somewhat agree

but I think it was wise to not have leach there. It would be like asking an ex girlfriend to the same party. It only creates drama. And lord knows we don’t need any more drama at tech.

Him being there and commenting about Tech

is every bit as big of a conflict of interest as Craig James commenting on Tech for ESPN. There are several other conferences having their media days that he could have just as easily attended. And if anyone thinks he’s going there to simply “do his job” and has no ulterior motives, then I’ve got some magic beans for sale. No one is going back in time and changing any of this, so, again, just move on.

i have to disagree on this one

All that it would do is further complicate pending and on going lawsuits. Leach should have took the highroad on this one and just done it via is lab top like he does his radio show.

He is a radio talk host

primarily specializing in college football……there is absolutely no reason to ban him from this event. Tommy is a seasoned professional and can handle himself….this wreaks of overmanipulation by the dentally challenged Kent Hance.
The only one immature here and not being able to handle this professionally is that jackwagon.

Nothing implies it was the jackwagon.

everything i have read said the b12 didn’t allow him in. i think at some point we have to take off the leach colored glasses and really look at this. do you really think leach wanted to go to cover the other schools or just to try to stair the pot? besides, just because he is a talk show host doesn’t mean he should automatically get access. if XM really wanted to cover the b12 media day they could have easily sent someone else and avoid this drama. Also, my original question was not answered. why couldn’t leach just do it via his lab top if he wanted to talk to tech and other schools so bad.

"A job well done is better than a job well said."

by I bleed Red and Black on Jul 27, 2011 10:56 AM CDT up reply actions

I clearly read that it was "....officials from Texas Tech...." that had him barred.

That at least implies that it could have been the jackwagon.

That aside – I listened to the Leach/Ticket interview and it’s safe to say that Leach is very complimentary of almost everything that is Tech and Lubbock – with the exception of Hance and a couple of the BOR. To say that he is bashing on Tech is misguided. Much like a lot of people on this site – he seems to genuinely love Tech, but can’t stand Hance. To that end, if I were a journalist, maybe would warrant being banned from Big 12 media days too.

I'll drop that point - someone was quoting a radio host on an earlier fanshot.
“According to the hosts, Texas Tech officials stepped in to prevent Leach, who is in town to promote his new book, from gaining access to the media event. I don’t have a link yet to the audio but will update if I find additional information.”

I’ll stick by the rest of what I said though. I still think that Leach like it at Tech.

Important to note also: while it doesn’t imply that it was the jackwagon who had Leach barred, it does nothing to change the fact that he is still a big hairy jackwagon.

here here oldschool

Banning him from an event…..he’s about as qualified as anybody to comment on all things big 12. This outcry is among the primary reasons that the US is frowned upon by most of the developed world….what damage can he possibly do?? Banning him makes more of a story than letting him come in, as a “free” representative, doing his reporting job. Yes, he was techs coach, and pretty successful at that….but….he was fired…and yes…he is going through the courts, but, here he was hired to do a job, and he was disabled from doing that by the establishment goons, who if there is any justice, he will win his case against.
The freedoms that you all speak of, is based on this kind of treatment, then thank fooook, the rest of the world live in the relative civilisation that we do…

His comments about Tech are extremely positive overall....

… it’s his comments about Hance and the BOR that they were afraid of. If exposing Hance for what he is makes Tech look bad, Leach isn’t the problem.

If you’ve moved on, great. Honestly, I’ve mostly moved on. But it pisses me off when someone tries to tell someone else how they should feel. If someone wants to argue about Leach and Tech until Jesus returns, that’s their prerogative. Your prerogative is to ignore it, not think that you know best about how they should feel.

We seem to be our own worst with tcu.....

Patteson made it clear he had to change some things after the 70-35 game and boy did he……but remember they play(at least right now) in the MT.West Conf. and Ammon G. barely gets 50% full…reminds me of the days of the Pony Express in Texas Stadium and they gave away 40,000 tickets…..Doege will be fine….I know most of us still want the “Air Raid” and TTU has some of it still but I think our running game at least from a talent standpoint is something at least “Mad Scientist Jr.” can be creative with and somewhat use to take the pressure off Doege…..and I do like having more speed than maybe ever at TTU…..also, I continue on, please South Plains Drifter take a hard look at doing whatever it takes to give Scotty Smith a chance to redeem himself in the Fall practices…..I know TSPD hs rules but it seems that what he did warrented a suspension but not being terminated so 9 games would be a reasonable punishment….so I’m pressing for a least a chance for Scotty to be on the opening day roster……“Free Scotty”! Leach being banned by Tech

Was going to be a given. I think it would have been very interesting to have heard whatever questions he would have asked. I really don’t think he would have been crazy enough to have made a great scene, but would have asked very pertinent questions that could have gained some interesting responses, maybe even better ones that were given to the blah-blah media types and their bottled questions. I have a feeling he will get his questions in and answered somehow, somewhere before the season starts, so it will be worth watching for them in the next month or so.
