I didn't see this on the official site, but wanted everyone to mark your calendars for August 18th.
Utah's Holy War edge over BYU; Oregon scandal; more Mailbag - Stewart Mandel - SI.com
Mandel's latest mailbag had a question about a Texas Tech fan not moving on from Leach and asks Mandel's opinion as to whether or not Tuberville will be able to make Texas Tech a "player" in the Big 12. I'll let you go read Mandel's response, but generally, I think that Mandel is correct in that it's always been UT and OU's conference to win and teams like Missouri, Texas A&M, Oklahoma St. and Texas Tech will poke through in a given year to challenge the big two:
I'm not sure I'd peg the Red Raiders to go much above last season's eight wins, but lest we forget, Leach won eight or nine games in seven of his last eight seasons in Lubbock. That one 11-win breakthrough in 2008 was an exception, not the norm. Tech is never going to compete on a year-in, year-out basis with Oklahoma and Texas, but it can certainly stay on par with Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Missouri and occasionally rise up and challenge the Big Two.

There was this small note at the end of this column about Gillispie's first and newest 2012 commit, Jordan Goodman:
Fresh off his commitment to Texas Tech, Jordan Goodman was more active and aggressive than in the past, proving to be a tough match-up

Texas Tech Adds Matt Eureste to 2011-2012 Recruiting Class - TEXAS TECH OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE
Interesting. Head coach Dan Spencer added SS Tim Proudfoot last week and now he's added another shortstop, Matt Eureste, a 40th round pick of the Cleveland Indians, who was originally committed to Sam Houston St.:
Jeff Ellis: Matt Eureste is shortstop from the Texas prep ranks. He is committed to attend Sam Houston State. He hit .415 this year for St. Pius X and was a first team all state selection this past season. He is an excellent athlete who was also an all state defensive back. His team was a state contender for the Division One title in Texas, where you have to have a top level athlete playing defense back. The Indians again get an athlete and an up the middle player. He has plus speed, and good footwork. These skills also helped make him an all state defensive back. A very interesting athlete drafted this late for the Tribe, and a player who could end up being a steal this late just based on his athletic abilities.
It's all about having some options.

Wouldn't that be something if Torres came out on top?

SETH! Keep the faith brother!
From 1978 through 1993 the Longhorns won the conference championship only twice. From 1988 through 1999 the Sooners NEVER won their conference championship! That means that there is hope that they will NOT always dominate our conference. Never say never. Guns up!
there is a shift in power about to happen over the next 10 years.
Assuming the conference still exists.
Whoever said, 'It's not whether you win or lose that counts,' probably lost.
For some reason I am overly optimistic also
I can feel the changing of the guard. Tech WILL become a dominate team in the Big 12-2. Long as we keep our AD and HC!

BTW the corollary is everything is a cycle hot, cold wet, dry good, bad. So it’s not inconceivable that UT and OU will tumble. Tho Mandel did say "as long as M. Brown and B. Stoops were at their current station".
Hope springs eternal. Remember Tubs is just like them. It’s a cycle.

Does anyone know if we have any QBs at the Manning Passing Academy this year?
My GF is a student at Nicholls State…she called me and told me that it was going on when she arrived at school today. Made me wonder if any of our guys were there.
Just Win!
Mandel is Astute
but I am more optimistic about conference competitiveness than he is. The round robin schedule is going to make everyone’s schedule more competitive in conference. However, UT will not have the walkover OCC schedule it has routinely maintained, nor will Tech. However, conference foes don’t circle Tech’s game the way everybody in conference does with UT and OU. Conference play is going to be tougher for everyone.
Also, I don’t see OU or UT being dominant simply because Brown and Stoops are coaching. I think the overall quality of the coaching and Big 12 facilities is going up and getting tougher. The BIg 12 did not get easier by contracting; and, basketball in particular is going to be a Bieeotch! I think Tech and a smart head coach should be able to win the conference about one out of every five years (sort of like Baylor and Grant Teaff used to do). 2011 should be a competitive year for Tech. 2012 should be a year when expectations for Tech should be higher.
Y'know
Everyone, including me, have been continuously circling 2012 as being the year for higher expectations for Texas Tech and its fans. What I have realized, and a few others here have done so as well, is that there are several teams that may have 2012 circled as their year to excel. Hopefully, the level of Tech’s play in 2012 will be a bit higher than any other team’s play and Tech will have that big year we all are hoping for. Anyway, we may want to knid of temper our expectations as the competition next year, and forward from there probably, is only going to get tougher. With the seemingly higher quality athletes Tech is getting commitments from the staff is going to be required to get them to play at that higher anticipated level in order for Tech to be as good as they want. Better athletes mean better records only if performance increases as well. My hopes are that the Red Raiders will be a constant threat each year to take the conference title, with few years being less than hoped for, starting with 2012. GO TECH!

2012 is a year that we are looking to...yet I am really interested in this season.
This season is the roll out of the new defense, it sets the stage for 2012, this season is the real learning season. With one year’s experience the defense is much better poised to support the growing offense.
This year’s offense is, in my humble mind, another year of growth. We have the new thought of growing the TE roll a real step this year rather than just talk about it like last season. We should have some actual depth showing, based primarily on the two guys who did not play…but with potential to explode based on a certain freshman’s abilities.
This year’s OL is ready, there are a couple of guys from the freshman class who are going to get ready for their sophomore year, 2012, especially inside, the more physical play is coming yet…look at the current OL recruiting class, they are all physical football players, rb’s are deep, qb’s are deep, receivers are getting deep.
I think 2012 is the year we see a ‘corner’ being turned, this year is going to be fun for the glimpses of what is to come, another growth year…even while we compete well.
I see the program coming together in a very strong way.
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
Mandel does make a serious error though.. this
“Tech is never going to compete on a year-in, year-out basis with Oklahoma and Texas, but it can certainly stay on par with Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Missouri and occasionally rise up and challenge the Big Two.”
My point is “never” is a long time. So I agree Tallmike bring it – punks in crimson and cream and traffic cone orange and off white. Never ? what the hell is he smoking? SI mouthpiece..
