Recruiting on the South Plains | DE Chase Robison

I admit, I'm a little surprised.  I thought Texas Tech would be done for a bit in terms of recruiting until the season starts, but here we are.  I'd also think that this is a commit that's a little bit out of no where and that Robison probably wasn't on anyone's radar (I'm talking about fans) due to the fact that Robison doesn't have the biggest and best offer list, but this very well could be a Blake Dees type of commitment from the standpoint that he might be unheralded, but he just might be able to play.  Let's get to it.

The Measurables:

Offers and Rankings:  According to Rivals Robison had an offer list consisting of Arkansas St., Bowling Green, Louisiana-Lafayette, Middle-Tennesee St., North Texas and Western Kentucky.  Scout had offers that Rivals had for Robison and also included Western Kentucky.  Robison wasn't rated by any of the scouting services except for ESPN, which has him as the 112th best defensive end in the country.  This is markedly different that the direction that Tuberville & Co. have previously taken.

The Player Speaks:  LAJ's Don Williams talked with Robison, who was happy to accept Texas Tech's offer:

"My head coach called and told me they were going to offer me (a scholarship)," Robison said, "so I called coach (Robert) Prunty (Tech’s defensive ends coach) and told him I was ready to become a Red Raider. He was extremely ecstatic about it. I’ve been ecstatic. I probably won’t sleep but two hours tonight."

Given that Robert Prunty is involved I'll trust him in terms of evaluating defensive line talent.  Prunty is responsible for guys like Leon Mackey, Delvon Simmons, Branden Jackson, etc.  I think he's earned some credibility.  It should also be mentioned that Robison's dad played football while Tuberville was coaching as an assistant at Arkansas St.  Here's Robison on Tuberville and Prunty:

"Prunty is a good Christian man," Chase Robison said, "and I really enjoyed working with him when I came down for the camp. Also, Tuberville is a friend of my dad’s. He coached my dad back at ASU in the early ’80s. I know Tuberville is a great man. I felt very comfortable with the Red Raiders. I knew this is the place I wanted to go."

More after the jump.

Scouting Report:  Robison does seem to do well at pass-rushing, he's long and lean and certainly quick enough to come straight off the edge with almost zero responsibility to stay at home.  You'll note that in the LAJ story, that Robison was moved to linebacker last season.  I'm a little bit torn from the respect as to where Robison eventually plays.  He does fit the mold of what TCU did at linebacker in the 4-2-5, and if he could add a little bit of muscle and be at 240, then I think he could play linebacker.  If he adds more weight than that then he's obviously headed towards a defensive end position.  Robison did say earlier this week (in fact I'd bet that someone from Texas Tech was at that camp in Oxford) that if he gets an Ole Miss offer, he'd put the Rebels at the top of his list (the article is actually dated today, which is somewhat funny.

Chase, welcome to Texas Tech and Git Your Guns Up!

Hard to tell how good he is against that level of competition.

I trust our coaches to spot potential, even if sportscasters have missed him./

Beg to diagree.

He earned his abilities through years of successful talent and student evaluations while at Hargrave Military Academy. He helped young men mature and assume responsibility. he is as much a foster father and role model as anything, and a darned good football coach. But, let’s just see how his recruits pan out. i am betting on them and on him.

Unfortunately, I live in Memphis, TN

Robison goes to school at Christian Brothers HS and this is one of the big powerhouses here in the Memphis area. Private schools here are a lot different than they are in Texas. If you can (or can’t) afford it then you send your kid to private school here. So, that being said, he is playing for a pretty good team and is probably playing pretty good teams. His HS is only 3-4 miles from my house, so I will have to go and watch him this fall. That is if he stays commuted.

Get your guns up!
