Red Raider Gridiron | The Defense Wins the Day

POST-PRACTICE NON-TRANSCRIPT | I only had time to transcribe Tuberville and Langley, but J.J. Gaines also gave some quotes after practice. Here's the video link.

Head Coach Tommy Tuberville | Good hot day, thought we got a lot done defensively, made progress.  Started to learn tempo, easier to play defense because it's not all mental.  Did a good job on first down and blitz.  Offensively, we took a big step backwards, need some leadership.  Have no room to waste a practice, not sharp, not a lot of enthusiasm.  That's the reason we practice and we get better.  (Asked about TAMU to SEC.)  Nah, no comment.  (Talk about center and right guard.)  Trying to find as many center as we can.  Keown is there, Deveric and David Neill are also getting reps.  Need to travel with three guys that know the blocking schemes.  (Talk about leadership.)  Have a few seniors on the offensive line, but leaders can be freshmen, sophomores, it doesn't make a difference.  The players need to be motivated.  Doege, Karam, they need to be more vocal.  (Did the redshirt help Erxleben?)  Yes, trying to keep the kickers fresh, hopefully we are handling it the right way.  (Talk about the offensive line and running game.)  Can't do a lot in the running game when you don't have shoulder pads or just have pads.  We're not going to be a great running team, yet, because we throw it a lot more.  We don't want to be a team that runs more than they pass.  We need more continuity.  We have the running backs.  Last year, I thought we had a "B" in the running game, need to be at an "A".  (Talk about the experienced on O-line.)  Can happen with younger or older guys.  We need to take pride in both running and passing.  (How is Tre' Porter?)  He's fine.  (Talk about J.J. Gaines.) He doesn't know much in terms of technique or fundamentals, he's got speed and quickness, he's thick, but we have to evaluate if he has the hips to play cornerback. (Talk about Aundrey Barr.)  His knee is better, but we don't want to drain him, but we have young guys that need reps, he's being more of a coach right now.  He'll play

DT Donald Langley | We just did what Glasgow coaches us to do.  Give it up to Coach Walker and tribute to the weight program.  No excuses and got after it.  We have to get better.  Mackey, Leon Mackey, he looks and plays the part  We feed off of each other.  (Talk about depth.)  The depth at the nose, we're getting better, we have to bring the young guys along.  (What does Glasgow bring?) He brings a fiery spirit, he's always intense, that trickles down to the players, giving 110%.  (Talk about running today after practice.)  Tribute to coach Walker, we're one of the hardest working teams in the offseason, and we take pride in that.

NOTEBOOKY | LAJ's Don Williams and RRS.com's Aaron Dickens and Will McKay file their notebooks yesterday.  The big news yesterday was that freshman C Tony Morales will have shoulder surgery and be out for the year.  That stinks as I thought that Morales might need to see time this year, but now that's not going to happen.  As to other news, Williams details a bit about how the defense dominated yesterday:

Multiple defensive players made plays during the daily scrimmage period. Nose tackle Chris Perry had a stop behind the line and quick pressure that forced a throwaway pass. Defensive end Dartwan Bush nearly picked off a Seth Doege throw in the backfield. Strong safety Terrance Bullitt rushed off the edge and batted a pass back to Doege. Defensive end Jackson Richards and linebacker Blake Dees got pressure on Scotty Young.

Williams also gushed a bit about TE Jace Amaro:

Tight end Jace Amaro continues to show some of the skills Tech hopes he’ll add to the offense. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound freshman laid out for a lunging catch near the sideline in one-on-one drills, jumped high to catch a deep out route during the 7-on-7 period and caught a pass for 15 yards during the team period.

Love it.

MISCELLANEOUS TEXAS TECH LINKS | CNBC's Darren Rovell  has the top 25 names in college football and S Terrance Bullitt makes the list at #16 . . . RP.com's Joe Yeager breaks down the wide receivers . . . offensive coordinator Neal Brown tweeted that the following players had good days on Tuesday:

These guys had good days yesterday: E.Ward, D.Gallington, O.Ontiveros, D.Moore, D.Washington, D.Neill, A.Crawford, L.Clark. Practice at 10 am 2day!

OFFICIAL SITE LINKS | Meet the two-deep  with WR Darrin Moore (watch via YouTube) . . . the defense has their day . . . Red Raider Football Fan Days is set for August 20th at the United Spirit Arena . . . I really am not a music-person (I listen to a lot of talk radio, specifically sports talk-radio), but I think the idea was great, but I'm not a big fan of the options and I pray to my deity that it won't be the Black Eyed Peas . . . I didn't notice this name earlier, but Jonathan White is on the roster.  White played linebacker and quarterback for Bremond last year and was his school's Salutatorian and was also named the defensive player of the year for 1A last year, finishing with the following stat line on offense and defense:

The 185-pound senior rushed for 1,270 yards and threw for 2,028 more while accounting for 39 touchdowns for the 11-3 Tigers. Defensively, he had 212 tackles, 15 of them for losses.

No reason to post this, but just thought it was interesting.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL AND BIG 12 LINKS | The big discussion yesterday around the internets was that Texas A&M will go to the SEC soon and yesterday afternoon, Texas governor Rick Perry said that he didn't know what the discussions were, but that discussions were happening between TAMU and the SEC.  IAT12M's miketag writes that the Aggies will make the announcement that they intend on jumping to the SEC by September 1st, so that means you only have to wait about three weeks for an announcement.  miketag also writes that Texas Tech wasn't happy with UT and the Longhorn Network trying to strong-arm Texas Tech into agreeing to broadcast this game on the LHN.  I did find this article from the Amarillo Globe-News, which had the following:

Tech chancellor Kent Hance nixed any deal, reportedly saying, "I don't want a Tech fan to have to give one dime to the Longhorn Network." President Guy Bailey and athletic director Kirby Hocutt agreed with Hance's stance (then again, who's going to go against their boss on something like this).

I don't have a clue as to separating the fact from fiction, but I do know that there is a lot of smoke, and if this were to happen, then one of Perry's more famous quotes, "Adios, mofo," would be an accurate statement from the Aggies to the Big 12 . . . Rivals.com thinks that Texas Tech and Arizona St. will meet at the Holiday Bowl . . . Turfburner's Jay Beck ranks the Big 12 QB's . . .

ROBISON COMMITS | I have a post to go up later this morning, but LAJ's Don Williams reports that Memphis, TN, defensive end Chase Robison committed to Texas Tech last night.

Helluva shame about Tony Morales...

Hope he has a speedy recovery and is ready to make the C spot his own in 2012.
Great to see the Defence stepping up, am happy to be hearing this as I’m sure the Offence will be just fine for the Bobcats and for the reast of the 11 season.
Am glad Eric Ward is making the move, always mentioned in NB’s standout players. He and Darrin Moore I hope see most of the action outside, I know they’ll be a great tandem. Speaking of Moore, good to see some character/personality/spark in the ‘meet the two deep’ series, only Langley has shown this much thus far (I have a feeling he had some prep time before with the questions, unlike some others). Wishing him well in his pursuit of a 1000yds this season, hope he smashes that target!

QB(s) has to step up as leaders

Bummer about Morales. Pumped about Jace. Pumped about D. Pumped about Russian Coffee. Plus I kind of wonder if this is Tubs just doing coach speak. When the Auburn had that undefeated season he kinda did this same type of coach speak.

I can’t wait for football.

Expansion

So, if ATM goes SEC then anybody heard any news on our future. Hopefully we are not left in CUSA or the MWC. Let’s get all of this over with and head out to be in the 12 PAC.

by barneg on Aug 11, 2011 8:23 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

In my opinion we stay and dominate a new Big 12 that would look like this;

OU and aTm leave for the SEC, and Texas goes independent. Big 12 adds TCU, Houston, and UTEP from Texas, we pick up New Mexico, and then we add Tulsa. I have decided to do an article about this, and I will post it tomorrow morning. This would be great for Tech becasue the conference would keep it automatic BCS bid. Plus, adding UTEP, New Mexico, and Tulsa would really beef up basketball. TCU would be the only question mark.

That is unlucky for Morales. Really good to see the defense step up. Really glad to hear that JC is improving by the day.

Another Red Raider First down.

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.

I think its incredibly optimistic to think Big12 (or whatever its called) keeps AQ status if UT, aTm and OU all leave. In that scenario I think there’s better odds of MWC gaining AQ status. (Not saying THAT is a slam dunk either, but better than what you’re envisioning)

Big 12 -3

for a year and then Big 12-4 in 2 years.

Minor conferences...

wouldn’t be that bad of a place for Tech to land. Look at how it’s paid off for TCU, Utah, Boise State, Houston, etc. If Tech ends up in CUSA, the WAC, the MWC, or any other, then we win the conference and go undefeated every freaking year. Then it’s only a matter of time before we’re back playing with the big boys.

And BTW, just like we saw in 2008, one loss in a major conference can still keep you out of the BCS. On the other hand, going undefeated in a minor conference can win you a pretty sweet bowl.

Take heart! Wherever we land, we’ll be okay… just so long as it’s not the boring-ass SEC!

by battledome on Aug 11, 2011 8:46 AM CDT reply actions

I dissagree

I just can’t see that as any advantage with what Tech has grown to be. I doubt you’ll see full stadiums and prime time television if we’re in one of the conferences you mentioned. It would be a major setback for our program and take loads of years to get relevent again even with wins. AQ conference or we failed big time IMO.

plus you can go undefeated every year and will never be allowed in the championship game.
Will always be 3rd place.

3rd place as opposed to...

Our best bowl game to date was that matchup against Cal in the Holiday Bowl. Running CUSA or another minor conference and beating a ranked non-conference opponent is an easily achievable goal for Tech. In the end, that puts us in a decent bowl even if we get snubbed by the BCS.

On the other hand, winning the Big 12 is almost impossible for us, and anything short of an outright conference championship practically guarantees us a trip to the Holiday or Cotton bowl, at best. Here’s what I’m saying…

Tech in an AQ conference: The best we can hope for is the Cotton Bowl.
Tech in a mid-level conference: A decent bowl is a gimme, and we can hope for a BCS bowl.

In neither situation are we a NC contender in the foreseeable future – but one path leads to the BCS and the other one doesn’t.

by battledome on Aug 11, 2011 9:53 AM CDT up reply actions

It's a stretch...

to think it would end up that way. Our level of play would decrease in one of those conferences and make us possibly an equal over time. Reasoning would be lesser quality recruits and minimal exposure to television. The money Tech has invested in our facilities and program as a whole would put us in debt. Nobody wants to purchchase season tickets from the DFW or Houston area to go watch Tech play UTEP or SMU. Recruits want to play at schools that give them exposure and are in an AQ conference. Coaches at the level of Tommy Tuberville and Mike Leach wouldn’t view Texas Tech the same way. I think your line of thinking is in the minority or I sure hope it is but none the less I respect your opinion.

A decent bowl is NOT a gimme

Just look at TCU and Boise St. for confirmation of that:

2010 – Boise St is ranked #10, with an 11-1 record. The reward was the Las Vegas Bowl (payout $1 M) and was played on Dec 22.
2008 – TCU is ranked #11, with a 10-2 record. They go to the Poinsetta Bowl (payout $500 K). They played Boise St, ranked #9, with a 12-0 record. They meet TCU in that same Poinsetta Bowl, that was played on Dec 23.
2007 – Boise St is unranked #24, with a 10-2 record. They go to the Hawaii Bowl (payout $750 K), played on Dec 23.
2006 – TCU is ranked #25, with a 10-2 record. They go to the Poinsetta Bowl (payout $750 K), played on Dec 19.
2005 – TCU is ranked #14, with a 10-1 record. They play Iowa St (7-4) in the Houston Bowl (payout $1.2 M), played on Dec 31.
2004 – Boise St is ranked #9, with an 11-0 record. They go to the Liberty Bowl (payout unknown), played on Dec 31.

These are only the results where the teams had at least 10 wins.

Meanwhile, here is what Tech has done in that same time:

2010 – unranked, 7-5 record, TicketCity Bowl, payout $1.2 M
2009 – unranked, 8-4 record, Alamo Bowl, payout $2.2 M
2008 – #7, 11-1 record, Cotton Bowl, payout $3 M
2007 – unranked, 8-4 record, Gator Bowl, payout $2.5 M
2006 – unranked, 7-5 record, Insight Bowl, payout unknown
2005 – #15, 9-2 record, Cotton Bowl, payout $2.85 M
2004 – #22, 7-4 record, Holiday Bowl, payout $2.09 M

So last year, we went 7-5, played on Jan 1st in our bowl game, and got payed $1.2 M. With the possible exception of the 2006 Insight Bowl, that was our worst payday in the last seven years, but still equaled the best payday either TCU or Boise St have gotten except for the BCS bowls, and those two teams have two undefeated seasons, two one-loss seasons, and three two-loss seasons in that time frame.

Go undefeated every year?

I doubt it. Mid-majors that have beaten us:

Houston 2009 (29-28)
TCU 2006 (12-3)
New Mexico 2004 (27-24)

Go register. Or else.

by Skin Patrol on Aug 11, 2011 11:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Yeah... but...

The Houston game was flat out poorly coached – and I’m a Leach guy. But that was a goose egg if I ever saw one.

TCU was ranked #20 in 2006 and actually favored over us – we were #24.

New Mexico in 2004… well… sometimes shit happens…

Tech in a non-AQ conference would be a disaster

A third of Jones Stadium are people traveling to Lubbock for the games, mostly from the Dallas Ft Worth area. That dries up if Tech falls out of a major conference. But worse than that, the TV money will dry up. MWC teams got 2 million each last year from the MWC TV contracts. Big 10 schools got 20 million a year from their cable network alone. The difference is on the order on 10 to 1 & growing.

Careful what you wish for.

Tough break about Tony. I wish you the best, my friend. The new recruit sounds like he might end up at LB. I am still bummed about Baron getting hurt. He is a fine young man, a great Red Raider, a role model. God speed, Baron.

We better get to Tier 1 quick. A&M making a good move. We are screwed. UT will implode. I hope OK State goes where we go. If we add, better to add Memphis, Tulsa, and Colo. State to get the Denver market. TCU is gone but they may change their minds. Problem is, how do you fill the stadium when you play avg. teams in conference?

PAC

I think anything short of the PAC conference for Tech would be a disaster. We’re a good fit to go west and I doubt we get any respect like we’ve had in the past 10 years if we head to the CUSA or WAC. Don’t kid yourselves into thinking it’s an advantage to play in one of those somewhat easier non-AQ conferences. Nobody takes you serious until you spend multiple years climbing like TCU had to do. It took a long time for them to gain any respect.

If we fall short of a non-AQ it’s a major set back for our program and you can bet the high profile coaches and players won’t be attracted to us as much. I really sincerely hope Hocutt and Hance are on this like it’s life or death. My gut tells me they are already talking to OU and the PAC folks because that just seems logical. This would be Hocutt’s big moment if he can protect Tech’s interests in college football.

So... are Tech fans just stupid?

They asked to vote on a song for crowd participation, not just the top hits of the day. No way a crowd can really do anything to Jason Aldean’s shitty cover of My Kind of Party(Brantley Gilbert started it and it’s 8786757X better, check it out) or If you Wanna Play in Texas. Not much to do with Enter Sandman, and that sucks because it’s great. You basically have 3 out of 15 available choices that could involve the crowd. Joe Satriani-Crowd Anthem , Marshall Masters-I Like it Loud, and P.O.D.-Boom. Crowd Anthem sounds kinda light in the loafers for a football game, and Marshall Masters is too much techno for me. But P.O.D. could be really cool. The crowd could scream “BOOM!” in unison every time it does it in the song. I can see this one actually catching on.

Agreed.

But the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of Boom. It fits going into the 4th quarter, or pregame for that matter. It would a deep, deafening roar. And since they love to muzzle our Boo’s, they could play that and the boo and boom would sound similar.

by RdrPwr on Aug 11, 2011 11:00 AM CDT up reply actions

"Boom" is the best

of the options given & people will know it since we used it a few years ago as a defense chant – the last 2:20 of AC/DC’s “Big Gun” would have been great for a 3rd quarter song with everybody throwin’ the guns up on “Big Gun, Number One”

When a politician says: “I don’t want…” to do something, it is a meaningless statement.

This is MILES away from saying “Never gonna happen.” OR “We will not contract with the longhorn network.” Anyone else see the difference? 3 cheers for inventive journalism.

The AGN also attributes supporting statements to other people, without – you know- supporting them or describing the source. Telepathy, most likely.

Surprise, surprise the AGN is the same firm as the AJ.
