2011 Texas Tech Football Preview

Additional Previews | Pre-Snap Read's Paul Myerberg #45 | Rivals #32

2010 Record | 8-5 (3-5 in Big 12)

Returning Starters | 13 (7 on offense, 5 on defense).  Give the issues with injuries last year, it's tough to figure out who was considered a starter for this team and am considering Porter, Johnson, Davis, Mays and Hubert as returning starts, but it's understandable to think that this is stretching the term "returning starter" a bit.  It's almost an entirely new defense because of a handful of position changes, injuries, etc.

Key Losses | DT Colby Whitlock, DE/LB Brian Duncan, LB Bront Bird, LB Julius Howard, S Franklin Mitchem, QB Taylor Potts, RB Baron Batch, WR Detron Lewis, and WR Lyle Leong.

"We saw a lot of improvement from our defenses in the first half today. We still gave up too many big plays and that is something that we have to correct. But, I was pleased with their performance and the way they have improved. After seven days, I think we have made some headway but it is going to be important for us to develop some leadership."
- Texas Tech Head Coach Tommy Tuberville
During spring practice.

Key Additions | DT Leon Mackey should be a starter from day one. He's a big defensive end or defensive tackle that I think will give DC Chad Glasgow some options along the defensive line. Mackey was a highly rated player coming out of high school, but spent time at a prep school and junior college before making his way to Texas Tech. Freshman RB Ronnie Daniels was one of the stars of spring practices and I do think OC Neal Brown wants to work in New Mexico's all-time leading rusher. Fellow freshman, TE Jace Amaro, was one of the more highly rated tight ends in the country and he's not just your average blocking tight end. Amaro is a big (6-5/246) mature high school player with a lot of athleticism that can add another dimension to the Texas Tech passing game.

Impact Offensive Player | Call me crazy, but I think that QB Seth Doege will be just fine. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to think that Doege will throw for 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns this year and be one of the better quarterbacks in a conference with some talented signal callers. Doege has waited patiently for his chance and I don't think he'll disappoint.

Impact Defensive Player | I've said it before and I'll say it again, but CB Tre Porter should have a significant impact this year. Last year, Porter flipped between cornerback and safety and I like the fact that Porter will be a full-time cornerback this year. As a true freshman last year, Porter was third on the team with 76 tackles, 4.0 TFL, 1 interception and 6 passes broken up. It wouldn't surprise me to see Porter be mentioned for all-conference honors this year. He just might be the team's best overall athlete and he's on defense. Red Raider fans, please rejoice.

The Offense

This is a public service announcement to other folks writing previews of the Texas Tech offense: Texas Tech will continue to run the spread offense and will not be switching to a heavily dominated run-based offense. I know that the tendency is to think that Tuberville will switch to an offense that doesn't fit the personnel, but the problem is that he doesn't have the pieces, even with the incoming freshmen, or the offensive coordinator to run that type of offense. I do think that Texas Tech will continue to throw the ball about 60% of the time and run the ball about 40% of the time, which is what OC Brown did last year.

More after the jump.

Star-divide

The success of the Texas Tech offense begins with the offensive line, which returns all five starters (LT LaAdrian Waddle, LG Lonnie Edwards, C Justin Keown, RG Deveric Gallington, and RT Mickey Okafor) and the one swing guy, Terry McDaniel, who could play right guard or left tackle. There is a lot of talent on the offensive line and with a year under their belt I think the offensive line will be better than they were last year, where as a team, the line gave up 1.62 sacks/game and still helped an offense that was #15 in the country in total offense, with 460.23 yards/game. RB Eric Stephens is the clear-cut starter and he's waited behind Baron Batch for two years to have his chance to start. I've already mentioned Daniels, but you'll also see RB Harrison Jeffers and RB Aaron Crawford see time at running back. RB Ben McRoy will also be a guy that probably swings between running back and inside receiver.

Texas Tech loses their top two outside receivers, Detron Lewis and Lyle Leong. This is where it gets a little dicey in the sense that Lewis and Leong accounted for a big part of the touchdown production from the receiving corps. Sophomore WR Eric Ward, senior WR Tramain Swindall, JUCO WR Marcus Kennard and a JUCO transfer WR Darrin Moore are the options right now at outside receiver and I think it might take a couple of games for the Kennard to make an impact, but Moore is probably a player that's going to make an immediate impact on the conference.

The Defense

The biggest change is who is in charge, and it's defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow, the secondary coach from TCU, who will be switching from the 3-4 to the 4-2-5. Most Red Raider fans know that this is probably a welcome change considering former DC James Willis probably asked too much of the personnel last year, especially the secondary. There will be a learning curve and the question remains how much of an improvement, if any, can Glasgow make in one year, considering Texas Tech fielded one of the worst defenses in the country last year.

One thing is certain, there will be more speed on the defense and I think this will be notable. The Texas Tech defense won't be as big as it was last year, especially at linebacker, but they will be much faster. It starts with Daniel Cobb now assuming one of the linebacker spots. Cobb, initially a defensive back, is converting to linebacker and the other linebacker spot will most likely be manned by sophomore Cqulin Hubert with senior Sam Fehoko, sophomore Zach Winbush and freshman Black Dees seeing time at linebacker.

With all of the injuries the secondary faced last year, the familiar faces that struggled a bit last year in exclusive man coverage, should be better. I've already mentioned Porter, but sophomore Derrick Mays should be improved after initially arriving at Texas Tech as a receiver and switching to cornerback late last year, showed excellent athleticism and speed. Jarvis Phillips and Eugene Neboh also return and expect newcomers JUCO Junior Osunde and freshman Jeremy Reynolds to see some time at cornerback as well. Weak safeties Cody Davis and Brett Dewhurst should be better than they were last year and they were already one of the more solid players on the team. I expect Terrance Bullitt to have a significant impact this year at the strong safety spot and D.J. Johnson will not be asked to be a cornerback this year, another position change that will improve the team, and I think he fits more naturally as a free safety spot, which is where he's slotted to play.

The big question is how good will the defensive line be considering the graduation of stalwart, Colby Whitlock. I like the talent available at defensive line, sophomore Pearlie Graves, senior Donald Langley and sophomore Kerry Hyder should all be improved. I think that Hyder is a player to watch as he has a nice combination of athleticism at the defensive tackle spot and could also rotate at defensive end. Sophomore DT Dennell Wesley, a JUCO transfer that will have three years to play, could see time at the inside defensivspot and he's by far the biggest defensive lineman on the team (6-2/317). Other than Mackey, Dartwan Bush may be the best pass rusher at defensive end. Once Scott Smith serves the remainder of his four game suspension he'll have an immediate impact. Sophomore Jackson Richards was named one of the starters after spring practice and would love to see a rotation of Richards and Mackey with Bush and Smith being the other set of defensive ends. Aundrey Barr should also see time at defensive end, although I think he's the furthest behind the other players mentioned.

If healthy I would expect Alex Torres to be the leading WR this season

TD’s and yards. The spring 2010 game he was catching everything aimed at his side of the field. Injures kind of wiped out his 2010 season.

If you're talking to Coach Rainman, whatever you do don't bring up the subject of weather.

Torres

He was still getting over injuries in the spring other wise would have had a better showing.
Should be 100% going into fall camp.

Any chance the Texas State game will be televised?
I know its still kinda early but i noticed a trend in first games being televised to see how good the teams are. Im assuming since this is Texas State’s first D1 Game, maybe there will be some tv interest.

Tech put the Weber State Game on the web with the radio call simulcast last year

All you need to do is hook your TV up to a PC & you have a televised game. I think I had to pay $10 to join their premium content area. Then I cancelled after the game. $10 pay per view is pretty reasonable.

they need to have a live video feed every game that is not televised.
i’d pay $10.

You hate to waste a trip to Lubbock against Texas State;

but I want to see first hand Russian Coffee and Doege. I am excited about our new defense, and I expect Doege to gain a lot of confidence in this game. My for sure will not miss game is aTm. I am still thinking about Nevada, but I will make my decision after Texas State.

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.

They will. I guarantee you by the 5th game he will be terrorizing QBs.

I agree with you on the defense Seth. I think Porter will have a very good season. On the offensive side I’m going to with Ronnie Daniels as the playmaker of the year. I see this guy making a name for himself very early. He has great size and speed and reminds me of OU’s famed Petersen.
I also think Doege will do a great job provided he’s equiped with better plays called in. Biggest question I have relates to our LB’s. We really need guys who can take down the run especially against teams like A&M and OSU. I would rest easier if we get that position worked out over the next 4 weeks.

I am hoping the CQulin and Blake emerge as strong players. I think LB is the most questionaqble spot on our D. But, if the D-Line is above average, it gives these guys a few games to get into a rhythm and learn the system. I am hoping that we play some frosh and have speed and brute anger playing the 2 part of the 4-2-5.

I liked Potts well enough and feel he was probably the logical choice as starter considering the choices..

But I also think Potts may have been a leading factor as to why our offense seemed off in both 2009 and 2010. He had all the tools, and he did produce, but it always seemed just a tad off. It’s hard to put my finger on it, but he just was missing something. Lewis and Leong may have benefitted from this in that Potts might not have used the entire field in the way those offenses were intended, putting too much focus on those guys as opposed to using the entire field at key times. Nothing against those two as they are still great athletes and played great by any standard. It’s just that the both offenses always seemed to be a step away from getting going under Potts and I’m not so certain that Harrell or others wouldn’t have taken it to the next level given all the same circumstances. The reason I’m going there is because I have a feeling that Doege is going to use the entire field in a way that Potts couldn’t quite manage. I think the decision making will be just a tad better suited for this offense and I think it will show. I believe the result will be that we will have noticeably better production next season and a more explosive/exciting offense than last year. I also believe that new receivers will pick up the torch and run with it. With the line as solid as it is, I wouldn’t be surprised to see us in the top 5 in offense again. A little better D and it should make for an interesting season.

all ii can say about potts...

is that i am completely glad he is not holding the trigger any longer… by far the WORST qb texas tech landed. i dont know what happend to sheffield, but potts sucked big time. im just being honest.. so i would definitely not place potts as a key loss.

by cfraider on Aug 2, 2011 6:41 PM CDT up reply actions

On what basis do you "have a feeling" Doege is going to use the entire field?

Doege never played high school football after his sophomore year at Crane. Name one team that has had success with a starting quarterback who never played a high school varsity game. Potts, Sheffield, Harrell, Cumbie, Symmons, Hodges, Kingsbury…Tolliver, Zebbie Letherege – they all had lots of high school experience. Lots of games. Close games. Big games. Playoff games. Big crowds. Pressure situations. Last minute comebacks. Doege, well, he’s a great seve-on-seven qb. I’m afraid he’ll cost us.

1st things 1st - Forget about how much success other schools have had........

I don’t even know of any team that has started a QB with so little high school experience. On that alone, it’s hard to argue against your point.

As I said, Potts may have been the best available those 2 years, but I always felt that he somehow didn’t use the offense as intended. For all I know, having Graham and Crabtree as examples may have skewed how he viewed his role in these kinds of offenses.

I don’t paid for this Damian, it’s just a gut feeling I have. I feel good about it based on what I know about the kid right now. Granted, it’s not a lot, but what little I’ve seen makes me feel like he gets it. Some kids just do.

I'm not sold on Doege

But he does seem fairly mobile and will certainly open up more of the field compared to Potts…

Respectfully disagree.

I think Potts was the best option we had over the course of the last two years. Which, admittedly says something about our QBs over that time. Sheffield was iffy at best in the sense that you never knew if he was going to be a lightening bolt and “shock” the offense to get where it needed, or he would be overly mediocre. Potts made you impressed one moment and the next play incredibly frustrated. Potts also had terrible mechanics as he relied so much on throwing off his back foot which made me go crazy.

I’m cautiously optimistic about Doege. He’s certainly unproven but I think from what we’ve heard over the past 6 months he’s the best we got. So, hopefully he’s our man.

Lastly, I’m really optimistic about our D. We were so pathetic last year we’re guaranteed to be better this year…. I hope.

Everyone take an appetite suppressant the Raider season is likely to be mediocre for a lot of reasons – a new def coordinator, a new QB, new defensive linemen, new starting Linebackers, an unproven place kicker and a roomful of opponents who are just as driven as the folks Tubs hired to get a winning season on the books.
That being said its pretty apparent the team will be a bit special and has the potential to knock off 2 out of the 4 big name programs aTm, Ut, Ou and OSU..I don’t think Mizzou will be as hot as the pro prognosticators say..just a feeling. (Coach Pinkle has a devilish set of QB & receiver troubles in the offing – hey I have my biases too). The Raiders offense has enough running backs to keep Doege out of too many third and longs – that’s important. They have enough receivers including Sally James – that old Seth D. well – he is going to complete 350 plus passes for over 3000 yards. They are going to score 30ish TDs in the air and 14 -20 on the ground. For you math whizzes that’s averaging a shade under 33 points a game. Much as I despise this trendy signal it in from the sidelines Nascar H** S**T. It’s going to be better this year and the spring game showed they are going to use it. If the trend line is anything like accurate a Coach Tubs second year team is 25 -33.3 % BETTER THAN HIS FIRST GROUP over a season. Not saying they can’t screw up two or three last minute drives in the 4th period, it’s just that they tend to trend a lot better with a year under their belts (see Coach Tuberville Mississippi and Auburn year two stats.) Chaos theory says you can’t have as bad a year defensively as they had in 2010 or twice in row – if you change the variable.. Coach Glasgow and the 4-2-5 is that variable. They won’t set the world on fire but they won’t allow 400 yards in the air either coupled to 12 -18 major injuries/suspensions on a single teams defense either. That means the team grades out around 50ish nationally and 4th or 5th best in the league. They might lead in a key category of pass break ups and or QB hurries or some such obscure statistical category but no matter the defense will be good enough to erase 7 – 9 point off the average allowed from last year . That’s okay because scoring 3.25 more points per outing combined with removing 7.5 points means 2 more wins. Over the course of the season. Chaos theory states – that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong equally to all participants. So they can beat who they are supposed to and split with those who are their "statistical betters". It’s like major league baseball win all home games and split the road outings with your opponents’. You have just qualified for the playoffs. Only in football a smaller statistical shot group has a larger effect per outing – what that really means to a Tech fan is beat the KU, KSU, BU and Iowa States (Like you are supposed to) and knock of OSU and ATM at home .. dropping the other 2 contests in Austin & Norman(or not ).. Whose hungry for some football?

Ditto

Your logic is interesting because thats pretty much the same logic I used to form my own expectations about this season. Two caveats I would add are: 1.) our offseason conditioning sounds like it’s been better than last season, thus hopefully limiting our injuries. A couple of major injuries and this season looks similar to last. 2.) the law of relativity, yes we will be better, but so will our strongest competition (atm, ou, ut, osu) and so it’s that marginal difference that will be a major determining factor. How much better will our 25 – 33% expected improvement be relative to the static performace and/or improvement of the atm, ou, ut, osu?

HOPE

Every year there are those teams that everyone expects to rank 7th or 8th in the conference because they are “rebuilding” or “in transition”. They get a new offense or defensive coordinator.
Last years example is OSU. New coordinator, New Quarterback and Blackmon came out of
nowhere with only 20 catches the year before. Who expected that?
I predict tech’s offense will have the same productivity it has had the past and will rank somewhere in the top 15 or better again. And on Defense, yes there is a new coordinator and new lineman but mackey and Smith will provide drastic improvement on the line. All of the young players that started last year because of injuries are gonna be more experienced and better with superior coaching from Glasgow. All those Juco transfers on both sides of the ball are gonna make an immediate impact. If the defense can improve and be at the level or better than Misssouri, Baylor, OSU, I think there is a chance to be 3rd or 4th in the conference. Hopefully pull some upsets on UT or OU along the way.
