Red Raider Gridiron | Don't Talk About It; Be About It

POST-PRACTICE NON-TRANSCRIPT | The video is here:

Head Coach Tommy Tuberville | Not much contact, everyone is tired, QB arms are tired, but will push through, and start separating who is in and who is not.  Fan Day is tomorrow, so come out and get your signatures.  Will give them Saturday night and Sunday off.  SS Terrance Bullitt could go through contact now, but we want to get him to the 1st game.  CB Eugene Neboh should be out here next week.  FS Giorgio Durham is back out here.  Need TE Tony Trahan back out here, he's missed all of two-a-days.  In scrimmage, we'll have officials, scrutinize every play.  We'll have one more scrimmage, but this one will determine who plays.  We want to try to get sixty snaps with the first, second and third group.  We may pull QB Seth Doege and give him forty snaps as he has a tired arm.  Sixty snaps is not a complete game, but it's close.  Defensive backs need to step up, our corners have gotten better.  CB Urell Johnson and CB Jarvis Phillips didn't practice in the spring.  Defensive backs and wide receivers need to catch the ball better.  The offensive line needs to work on continuity with having a new center with C Justin Keown being out.

SCRIMMAGE TODAY AND TEXAS TECH LINKS | As noted above, there is a scrimmage today, starting at 10:00 a.m. this morning and if you are a season ticket holder, you can go watch.  LAJ's Don Williams has his football notebook (and he's also tweeting, so follow him at @AJ_DonWilliams) and there are a couple of things that are not in the non-transcript.  The first is an update on DT Delvon Simmons, where Tuberville isn't sure what's going on at the NCAA, but expects a positive outcome:

"I don’t know what they’re doing," Tech coach Tommy Tuberville said. "I think we’re going to come out of it good, but we’ll just have to wait and see."

And also talks about DE Scott Smith, who Tuberville things will benefit from a switch to a DE in a 4-2-5 rather than a DE in a 3-4 (I totally agree):

"He’s working hard," Tuberville said. "He’s keeping his weight up. By the time we get to conference games, I think he’s going to really help us, because he’s still learning. Going with a new defensive style, him being on the outside I think’s really going to help him coming off the edge."

. . . the Big 12 site has a notebook type of thing, but there's really nothing new there if you regularly visit DTN . . . ESPN's Corey Long breaks down the recruiting for all of the Big 12 teams and has this about Texas Tech:

Who they have: Although the Red Raiders' class hasn't been hyped like Texas or Texas A&M, it's a strong group, with five four-star prospects. Wide receivers Dominique Wheeler (Crockett, Texas/Crockett) and Reginald Davis (Tenaha, Texas/Tenaha) will be counted on to make early contributions when they arrive on campus next season. Quarterback Clayton Nicholas (Abilene, Texas/Cooper) is a highly skilled passer and will be the guy to lead future Red Raiders' offenses. He'll have plenty of protection up front, with verbals from four-star offensive linemen Michael Starts (Waco, Texas/La Vega) and Christian Okafor (Houston/Westbury). The Red Raiders' coaching staff has taken advantage of the state's riches with 16 in-state commits.

Who they still want: Quarterback/athlete Jalen Overstreet (Tatum, Texas/Tatum) has Texas Tech in his top group along with Baylor, Michigan and Missouri. He is planning on taking an official visit to Texas Tech and, at 6-1, 205 pounds, would like to compete at quarterback. The Red Raiders signed 28 players last year and probably won't add too many more to this class.

OFFICIAL SITE LINKS | Meet the two deep with WS Cody Davis (watch via YouTube) . . . a bit on today's scrimmage . . .

BIG 12 AND COLLEGE FOOTBALL LINKS | Dr. Saturday's Matt Hinton continues his assault on the Big 12 where he if the Missouri Tigers makes the move this year, that the Oklahoma Sooners will have a title by the air and the Oklahoma St. Cowboys breaks out its biggest guns . . . National Football Post's Wes Bunting takes a look at the top Big 12 senior prospects and there are no Red Raiders on the list (really only LG Lonnie Edwards would garner a look, but he's not in the top 10) and makes you think that there's going to be a lot of returning players next year . . . ESPN's David Ubben has 5 predictions for the Big 12, which includes RB Eric Stephens rushing for 1,000 yards . . . I didn't link to this earlier in the week as there were a few stories that garnered a bit more attention, but the Perryman Group released an economic impact study on what would happen if Texas A&M went to the SEC.  This study was mocked by most because there wasn't any real data to back up the study.  Thankfully, SportsBizMiss, Kristi Dosh believes that TAMU's move to the SEC would have a slight positive impact because of fans traveling from other states . . .

CONFERENCE REALIGNMENT LINKS | There's only one link, but it's from LAJ's Don Williams who expounded on yesterday's article from the FWST's Jimmy Burch as both talked with Texas Tech President Guy Bailey about the Big 12 wanting to have binding contracts on the remaining members of the Big 12.  Bailey expounds on the idea of a binding contract:

"I don’t know that ‘contract’ is the right word, but a more binding agreement that we agree to in writing," Bailey said. "I think that’s a good idea. I think the commissioner (the Big 12’s Dan Beebe) suggested that, and I agree."

And here is the interesting thing, which is that the Big 12 wants to go outside their current footprint, which would seemingly preclude teams like TCU, SMU and Houston:

The Big 12 Board of Directors met last week via conference call to discuss the A&M situation. They agreed to immediately pursue an expansion candidate or candidates if the Aggies leave. If that comes to pass, Bailey said Friday, the two most important objectives will be adding schools outside the current Big 12 "footprint" — enlarging its geographic area, in other words — and pursuing new members who offer "national cachet."

Brigham Young, Air Force, Houston and TCU have been speculated as possible targets. So has Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish’s lucrative, long-term television contract with NBC could be problematic, not to mention Notre Dame’s long tradition of being independent in football.

"The only thing I would say about that is I can’t imagine anybody who wouldn’t want them," Bailey said. "I’m sure Notre Dame could go to whatever conference they want. They bring tremendous national cachet. It’s premature to say we’d look at them or anybody else, but who wouldn’t want them?"

I think this sounds about right and confirms what other people have said, which is that the Big 12 will want to add at least 1 more team and I would think that if the Big 12 was able to get Notre Dame (seems incredibly unlikely) and BYU, then a team like TCU, SMU or Houston would have a chance of being added as a 12th member.

If the Big 12 aren't starting a Big 12 Cable Network, why does expanding the conference footprint matter?

The conference only exists as cannon fodder for the University of Texas Financial Juggernaut. Adding a weak sister like SMU would seem to be just the ticket for the Longhorn Overlords of the Big 12. In fact I wouldn’t be surprised if DeLoss Dodds doesn’t fine Tech’s Baily for speaking out of turn. Or speaking at all.

I look at it differently;

Big Orange probably paid Bailey to speak out. BO does not want the Big 12-3+1 to fold. BO has nowhere to go. Super Conferences are coming. Doesn’t it make sense, we all want the Wool Sweater Conference, and our fearless leaders want to stay in the armpit of Big Brother.

We are Texas Tech, we have a lot to offer, The Country loves our brand. Just finished reading Swing Your Sword. Damn I miss the captain.

Catfish isour man, so if it means the offense is 7 points down each game with the on sides kick, at least we can still make You Tube.

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.

I've always been pro onside kick

I posted many times on game day threads last year my support for the Onsides Catfish.

I wish he would call it at least once per game and then run out on the field like he’s jugglin’ bowling balls at knee level.

If he did that we’d all be able to move past Leach.

Bailey sits on the Big XII board

He is not making these statements as Tech president. That’s the spin that stupid media is giving. It’s Beebe making him make theses statements because he is serving on that role in the Big XII currently. However, its interesting that he seems to be going over and beyond his responsibility in drum beating all these.

A Big12 Network makes sense....

then the question would be more around programing details…who is calling the shots on the games and how they would be staged. Would HS games be scheduled, the criteria for making those decisions….

If the conference had a network, but the director of publicity at the U of T was program manager, we would not be gaining much—yes, I wrote an extreme example to make a point.

Here is what I read from Bailey’s comment about a written agreement: Your word is not worth a plug nickel so maybe a piece of paper with threat of contractural liability will suffice—although probably not. (Mike’s question, does TAMU’s ability to keep their word reflect on their cachet ?)

I kind of hope Bailey is being disingenuous

Because if he isn’t that means we are having no conversations with other conferences about moving. It would mean we’ve thrown our lot in with UT come Hell or high water. Which would be very unwise.

@Mbrown603

In your opinion what other Real options does Tech have on their own in this whole realignmnet mess?

I don’t like it anymore than anyone else here, but it just seems to me that our only option is to stay put or tag along. I don’t see any of the other big conferences offering us an invite alone.

"There is no chance he will win, but if you think about it carefully he would be a pretty good candidate. He says a lot with no substance, he's proven he can be bought, he's dishonest, and he has the personality of a TV evangelist so I think he would be perfect in Washington!"-- Mike Leach (When asked if he would vote for Craig James for Senate)

Maybe not alone, but with the two Oklahoma's

I think sometime soon Oklahoma will reach the point where they realize the money available in a conference with a cable network is worth more than anything UT & the 8 dwarfs can offer them in the remnants of the Big 12. So I don’t think the slow motion dissolution of the Big 12 is done yet. In which case why would Bailey want to encourage everybody to bind themselves more tightly into what’s left of the Big 12? The only programs who benefit from the Big 12 as it is configured today are the Longhorns with their solo TV deal & the remainder schools who otherwise would fall out of an AQ conference & see their athletic dept revenue shrink to very little without the network TV payouts. If Oklahoma, Tech & Oklahoma State went to the Pac 16, all three would immediately benefit financially over what the Big 12 is doling out. Plus they would have a conference cable network where they can promote their school & keep their fans involved. As long as there is a Longhorn Network in place, there will be no Big 12 Network.

That is a common sentiment, mbrown...

But I tell you, for me, I am stuck with the thought of a middle America conference that can compete with the PAC and the SEC, etal and which includes more or less middle America’s program (not Notre D—me no likey)

by TallMike on Aug 20, 2011 9:26 PM CDT up reply actions

As long as this mid America Conference has a cable network to compete with the SEC, Pac 12 & Big 10

I just think UT has poisoned the Big 12 by starting their own TV network. That & the unequal revenue distribution. I want Tech to be a full partner in an AQ conference, not just one of UT’s b*tches. I’m completely behind the Aggies on this one. They are wise to move to a conference that will accept them as an equal partner.

The best hope for the Big 12 is if The Longhorn Network fails. Maybe ESPN will then try to recover their investment by re-branding it the Big 12 Network. UT can sell their interest to the Conference.

big 12 network - Texas

We need a big 12 minus Texas network. Let them show h.s. games.

Tweets from today's scrimmage

The offense seems to be tearing it up. So the defense is not. They do have an interception in the end zone. The news I don’t like is Donnie Carona missed a 23 yard field goal. Later he made a 54 yard field goal dead center. Can we find somebody else to handle the PAT’s and FG tries under 40? Carona obviously has a great leg but his consistency is just not there. We need the gimme’s to be gimme’s.

2012 recruiting

Watch out for Cordarrelle Patterson..Tech is recruiting him and he is a BIG TIME play-maker. If Tech can grab him then the WR position will be locked down with good talent…

6'4", 205 lbs Hutchinson Junior College, Kansas

He is listed as the top JUCO receiver for 2012. Stron list of colleges interested in him. He must be a pretty good player to be rated this high. If Tech could land him, the WR depth for the next few years would be amazing.

Check him out

http://vimeo.com/23903934 from the looks of this he can really play. He will complete the WR spot with all the inside recievers Tech has. I get chills just thinking about it… Then they could truly focus on recruiting defensive players.
