Red Raider Gridiron | You Can Be Late, But You Can't Be Stopped
NOTEBOOKY AND OTHER STUFF | LAJ's Don Williams has a short notebook, focusing on DE Kindred Evans and the three freshman running backs (Ronnie Daniels, Kenny Williams and DeAndre Washington) who all had similar numbers in Saturday's scrimmage. Totally Texas Tech's TTURed has a bunch of photos from the Knights of Columbus Tech Knight Kickoff. The DMN has three reasons to be optimistic (I give this article a big, "Meh."). The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel writes that former Red Raider QB Graham Harrell has solidified the #3 quarterback spot in Green Bay.
OFFICIAL SITE LINKS | Meeting the two-deep took a day off on Saturday so you got two yesterday, including WS Brett Dewhurst (link and watch via YouTube) and RB Aaron Crawford (link and watch via YouTube). I like Aaron Crawford as a person. Please don't hold that against me.
BIG 12 AND COLLEGE FOOTBALL LINKS | Dr. Saturday's Matt Hinton finishes Big 12 Week with a look at the Texas A&M Aggies and forecasts the Big 12, including the thought that Texas Tech finishes 7th in the conference . . .
SLOW NEWS DAY | Because it is a slow news day, I thought it would be a good idea to post the video of defensive tackle coach Robert Prunty which was taped during the spring. One thing I didn't realize was that his father died when Prunty was 10 and his mother died when he was a freshman in college. It's easy to see how Prunty can relate to so many kids. I bet he's got a great story to tell about life and perseverance.

Agree on the MEH on the DMN article
The 4-2-5 itself is not a reason to be optimistic, in fact it has yet to be successful in the Big 12. Doege isn’t close to Graham and is much more like Cody Hodges, which isn’t bad. Winning up front still needs to be seen but the opportunity is there.
Ready for the season.
TCU was the only team to beat OU in the last ten years;
and the Frogs were not a top 10 defense at the time. I am not aware of any other team that implemented the 4-2-5 out of the Big 12-3+1.
I am really excited about Russian Coffee’s 4-2-5. If he can improve to top 50 defense in first year, then we have a chance to win 8 games, and maybe 9.
Sounds like the offesne could be putting points on the board again.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
Okie State beat OU in Norman in the last 10 years.
And they did it without the 4-2-5. We hung 70 on TCU’s 4-2-5 with a walkon QB. We beat OU once with Lyle as our DC.
In 2006 we put up 3 points against TCU 4-2-5 defense;
Harrell was 23-47 that day and only had 204 yards passing, and we only had 13 first downs on the day.
Russian Coffee will bring the aroma back to our defense, and it will smell and taste delicious.

Last OSU win was 2001 (Norman) and 2002 (Stillwater) both Les Miles. ………………………………….. Gundy has NEVER beaten Stoops

Dont buy the Espn/Disney/ABC hype ! Playoffs are just spin to hide their agenda of owning our favorite sport.
I didn’t have a problem with the article.
Compared to what the defense showed last year, I’m optimistic we’ll see improvement. That doesn’t mean we’ll have a top-10 defense this year, but it should be much improved over 2010. You say the 4-2-5 has yet to be successful in the Big XII, but I ask you, where has it been a failure?
I don’t think Doege should be compared to Harrell, and I’m not convinced there won’t be a QB controversy by the end of the season. However, at least any controversy this year will involve a whole new set of players, and that’s still better than what we had the last two seasons.
I agree we still need to see the winning up front. However, the article was giving reasons for optimism, and that opportunity you mentioned gives hope.
Let’s face it, this team could easily end up anywhere between second and ninth in the Big XII. I don’t think we could beat Oklahoma for the conference title, and I think Kansas has a firm lock on last place. I think everything else is fluid. If I had to guess, I’d say we finish fourth. I think Oklahoma will win the conference, and I think Missouri will be in the top three. However, I think either Oklahoma St or A&M will fall off some this season, to fifth place.

Texas A&M ran the 4-2-5 a few years ago with little success.

Yes, Franchionne was one of the first to run that defense (if I remember correctly) while at New Mexico (I think) and Patterson was Fran’s defensive coordinator.

GH destined for #2 at GB
At least, that’s what the GB-based announcers of the Cardinals game implied. Flynn, who is a very impressive QB, will be a free agent at the end of this season. The announcers seemed to think that either by trade or free agency Flynn will be gone next year and that GH is being groomed as his replacement.
I watched a NFL Network replay of the game. Harrell was truly impressive on the touchdown drive. The two incompletions were due to receivers not looking for the ball after GH changed the play at the line of scrimmage. One hit the oblivious receiver on his shoulder. The 15-yard scamper on the next drive was fun to watch. It was either on this play or a rollout on the touchdown drive that one of the announcers said that Harrell didn’t get much opportunity to do that sort of thing at Texas Tech.
During the post-game press conference, McCarthy even gave “Graham” credit for Flynn’s 97-yard touchdown pass, but I’m sure that he caught his mistake during the film review.
I don’t think Harrell could be in a better position for his development than at GB under McCarthy.
MUST READ
The Milwalkee Journal-Sentinel article is a must read. It has some facts about Harrell’s journey that I had not seen before.
Much like Kurt Warner, Graham gets little respect. But if he gets the chance – much like Kurt Warner – he can play in the NFL.
GH needs one more year under coach Mcarthy, and then he is on his way;
Next year he will be number two somewhere, and then all he needs is a chance.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
I don't know if this has ever been said before while i was at tech
but I’m excited about the RB’s we have. Seth Doege won’t have to put everything on his shoulder now.

I like the video on coach P.
When I finished watching, Youtube had another as a suggestion. It was of Coach P selling Hargrave in an on campus interview—he had Mackey with him in uniform as a testimony to what can be achived….I found it worth the watch…but lost it so I cannot make a good reference.
Coaches are studying film, making decisions…..we will be seeing the 1, 2, and 3 soon.

Hey keep picking TTU 7th.....
and that really is TTU’s time to show folks how good we really are….If we can keep our Oline intact then TTU is in for at least 9 wins this season…..then 2012 could be really special!!!! Free Scotty! Wreck’Em Tech
I don’t see how 7th is that far out of line based on what we saw last year and the turnover in staff. 6-5 is just as likely as 7-4 and both are a lot more likely than 8-3.

Were you at the booksigning on Thursday? I raced from the bookstore to the ballfield that night. I finished the book on Sunday and my son started reading it Sunday night. Lot of good stuff in there and I hope it reinforces some of the things that I have tried to teach him.

Tubby said last week they will have it after the scrimmage Saturday;
but Catfish changes his mind alot.

DOes he change his mind....
or does sometimes just vomit out empty words in order to fill time?

Soon !
Like today or tomorrow soon, there is to be a scrimmable on Wed…
It does look like the OL is going to be unsettled while we work out depth for center and guard….we have two centers injured.

Hopefully the tipped pass by Nancy will drop her on the depth chart.

Harrell article poor because of author's attitude.
The tone is just nauseating. It’s as if we are introduced to this Harrell guy who isn’t really on the team because – well, he is kinda new to this whole game called football. Someday, he might figure out what he is doing, but there is plenty of time for that.
I am not saying at all a football player has nothing to learn once in a major league.
Surely Harrell would be the first to agree.
What I am saying, is that this is the rust belt. Texans can’t tie their shoes, and probably haven’t passed the third grade,dontchaknow. We should be surprised that he has a car, because they all ride horses. Someone should tell him about snow, and football, and where Madison is, eh?
We’re supposed to be amazed that they are even interested in this guy and da balloon sleeper he got, Eh? Eh!
Yuck.
Cowboys vs Chargers
Anybody else see Lyle leong and bird playing against each other last night.
The only thing bad about it was bird got a penalty and leong dropped a pass. that is how they got their faces on tv.

Yes, but week 2 and they are still on the roster. Bird looked the part.

RBs
Can’t wait to see how the running backs come out on the depth chart. Man, I keep getting more and more excited for this year, and the next, and the next. When I got my seaon tix in the mail last week I YEEE-HAWWED really loud.
