Texas Tech Football Five Questions | Only Eight More Sleeps

Five_questions_-_tiltshift__resize__medium

1.  WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN AND WHAT IS NOT A CONCERN AT ALL AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF FALL PRACTICES? | I think my biggest concern is the relative youth at linebacker.  It was one thing to have guys like Sam Fehoko, Daniel Cobb and Tyrone Sonier all be mentioned as guys that would see time at linebacker, but now the depth chart consists of Blake Dees (Fr.) and then Sonier at strong side linebacker and Cqulin Hubert and Sam Eguavoen at middle linebacker.  That is a lot of inexperience, especially for Eguavoen, who just started playing football.  You could also include the offensive line with the injury to C Justin Keown.  What doesn't concern me at all is the offensive firepower that seems to be available on this team.  If QB Seth Doege can spread the ball around and get the ball down the field for guys like WR Darrin Moore, WR Jacoby Franks, WR Tramain Swindall, WR Eric Ward, WR Bradley Marquez, etc. to make some plays in space, then the offense is going to be just fine.  And yes, I realize I've left out a lot of playmakers, but that's somewhat the point . . . there are a lot of options.

2.  WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON OFFENSE? | The biggest surprise for me has been the emergence of WR Darrin Moore.  I haven't really talked about him all that much, but his name has been brought up for just about the entire fall practices.  I don't think this is posturing by Tuberville or OC Neal Brown, I really do believe that Moore, who is physically this team's most intimidating presence at 6-4/215, just might be a guy that will surprise a lot of fans across the Big 12.

3.  WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON DEFENSE? | The emergence of CB Sawyer Vest.  I know I could probably write about a couple of things here, but the fact that Vest is running with the second team at cornerback behind Tre Porter is a complete surprise.  In fact, I was searching on Twitter this morning and ran across this from Josh Abbott (yes, the guy with the band and hat-tip to RedRaiderNation):

Proud to hear my fraternity brother @TheV_V's younger brother Sawyer earned a football scholarship this season at Tech! Congrats man!

So Vest is no longer a walk-on, but rather a scholarship player (as is FB Omar Ontiveros, hat-tip Spencer Rogers) and I admit that I'm a bit worried that a walk-on is beating out scholarship talent or that the depth at defensive back is so poor, that a guy like Vest runs with the second team.  But you've heard nothing but praise for Vest, who has competed and defensive coordinator Chad Glasgow said this (or something like this as it's not a direct quote):

CB Sawyer Vest has competed his tail off every day and I bragged on Sawyer the other day and he went out and picked a ball off.  We will play how we practice.

I think that last sentence, "We will play how we practice," was Glasgow serving notice on everyone on the team that those that compete on each and every play during practice will see game time.

4.  SO NOW THAT THE BREAK-UP LETTER HAS BEEN SENT, WHO DO YOU BLAME FOR THE BREAK-UP OF THE BIG 12? | This really deserves more writing that I'm about to devote to it, but this will have to do.  For me, I blame both TAMU and UT.  When I have beneficiaries of an estate fighting over items, it is usually the fault of both parties, not just one and that's the case here.  I don't "blame" TAMU as much as UT because now the rhetoric coming from the UT fans is a bit much.  I think that TAMU wants to be treated like an equal and I don't think that UT wants to give up being the team in charge of the conference.  They want to have their Longhorn Network, and I don't blame them for that, but sometimes in life there are consequences to your actions and the Longhorn Network, as awesome as it may eventually be for UT, has consequences.  Now, TAMU will be in a conference where Alabama is treated like Vanderbilt, rather than be in a conference where one member is dictating what happens.

TAMU, along with OU and all of the other members, could have probably tried to force UT to stop flexing their muscles by acting as a collective group, but that never happened and I think that these teams probably had different agendas as the Longhorns continue to stand looking at the mirror and posing like there is no tomorrow.  Meanwhile, UT fans are blaming the Aggies for breaking up the Big 12 and I've also ready that although UT had the opportunity to leave to the Pac-10 last year, because the Longhorns are so benevolent and love their regional rivalries, they decided to stay and make it all work out in the Big 12.  Bullsh.  UT would have bolted for the Pac-10, leaving the Aggies in the dust, had they been able to have their own network in that conference, but again, it's about treating conference members as equals and I don't think UT wants no part of that.

Meanwhile, the Longhorns are saying that they'll simply replace the traditional Thanksgiving Day game with the Aggies and now play Notre Dame.  As SBN Los Angeles points out, there already is a pretty big game that weekend that already involves the Irish and USC (during even numbered years) and Stanford (during odd numbered years).

5.  WHAT IS YOUR PRE-GAME RITUAL? | I want to open this up to whatever your normal pre-game routine is.  Whether it's at home, or if you travel.  Love to hear what you do to get ready for a game.

ALL OF THE QUESTIONS ARE AFTER THE JUMP SO THAT YOU CAN COPY AND PASTE THEM INTO YOUR COMMENT AND ANSWER MORE EASILY.

MISCELLANEOUS LINKS | LAJ's Don Williams writes about K Donnie Carona trying to be more consistent, and I thought this was an honest thought from Carona:

"If I keep missing kicks, they’re not going to have me stay out there," Carona said. "I feel that pressure, but the good thing about kicker is that it’s just you, and what happens depends on you and nobody else."

At the very least, Carona understands the deal and knows that he's missed those short kicks before.  Perhaps the reason Tuberville said yesterday that there are no back-up kickers is that they want to put pressure on Carona to do something he's capable of doing, but just doesn't for whatever reason . . . meet the two-deep continues with CB Jarvis Phillips (watch via YouTube) . . . Well......

1. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN AND WHAT IS NOT A CONCERN AT ALL AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF FALL PRACTICES?

Biggest concern….how the new defense will do. I am optmistic, but still concerned. Though the OL has raised my eyebrow lately….
No worries about Doege at QB, it’s your time young man, go win!

2. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON OFFENSE?

How many ridiculously talented RBs we have now….crazy. Also that Adam James has been getting accolades from Neal Brown in his daily tweets – I am a Tech fan & believe in forgiveness, AJ you play unselfishly and take the scorn with praise equally then good luck.

3. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON DEFENSE?

How big Delvon Simmons and Leon Mackey are….and fast.

4. SO NOW THAT THE BREAK-UP LETTER HAS BEEN SENT, WHO DO YOU BLAME FOR THE BREAK-UP OF THE BIG 12?

Not a clear cut choice. UT’s LHN is partly to blame but aggie acting like a child doesn’t help either. The LHN is going to fail, not enough carriers – it WILL morph into a regional network….thing is will it morph to late for aggie to stay?

5. WHAT IS YOUR PRE-GAME RITUAL?

Make sure I have rule of the TV from the wife and kids or at least can listen to the game on the radio if at home. Have to have the Tech guys on the radio – must tune in….Wear my black Double T shirt.

Blackbeard is sorry he missed third person Thursday.....but

1. his biggest concern after fall practices is the severe lack of rain in his beautiful state which, if you recall last year’s Jones running out of water, could impact my future attendance at the games.
2. his biggest surprise during the fall practices is that doege was named the starting QB
3.his biggest surprise on defense is that we actually think we may have something there
4. he blames nancy hance and dickhead craig for everything
5. for the past five or six years, his pregame ritual consists of meeting his dad (90 yrs) for a pregame meal at Caprock Cafe, then getting on the Sharp, driving to the Letterman’s Lounge (north stadium bldg) and dropping him off. He then goes and parks at 15th and Akron and walks back to the stadium and continues visit with oldest football letterman still attending games. 20 minutes prior to kickoff he goes to his 50 yd line seats and begins making nasty comments about the other team, kent hance, craig and nancy james, and says “fuck texas” a lot.
NOTE: sadly his father will not be able to attend many (any?) games this year due to failing health. Please keep good thought for him.

Good Luck with your Dad

I am in the same boat with my Dad who is 89. Can’t go hunting anymore, no more trips, and unfortunately watching Mom wither (also 89) away with Alzheimer’s. This year for the first time made pickled squash and okra like my Mom did and gave to Dad. Wish it would rain.

Good thoughts for blackbeard Snr, and my 5...

1. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN AND WHAT IS NOT A CONCERN AT ALL AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF FALL PRACTICES?
Biggest concern is Donnie “no lime in my” Carona. If short field goals and PATs aren’t automatic, we could lose some games we shouldn’t..
Nancy getting game time, whimping out of a block, and poor old Doege getting maimed as a result..
No concern, d-line and offensive weapons.

2. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON OFFENSE?
Swindall and Franks still in the two deep, hats off to them, thought they’d have been swamped.
All the incoming RBs are good to go, an embarrassment of riches.
Bradley Marquez converting to WR so seamlessly – the guy is gonna be great.

3. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON DEFENSE?
Kindred Evans and Sam Eguavoen. These guys had redshirt written all over them. Impressed that they’re ready to play now. With the more heralded recruits, it bodes exceedingly well for the next few years. Sawyer Vest too, great hearing stories like that.

4. SO NOW THAT THE BREAK-UP LETTER HAS BEEN SENT, WHO DO YOU BLAME FOR THE BREAK-UP OF THE BIG 12?
The big 12 for allowing such an imbalanced league, nobody kept UT’s ego in check. A&M for being A&M. Maybe a little bit on the smaller schools for not forcing there way over the years and allowing the league to be so 2, even 3 tiered..

5. WHAT IS YOUR PRE-GAME RITUAL?
Being 7 hours ahead of you guys, I’m usually fairly wankered by game time. Whap out my numerical roster, boot up the old computermebob, get the interwebster on, login to whichever international site is showing it (Usually ESPN alas), activate instant messenger with a few of my old tech hombres for in-game banter…..crack open a nice bottle or two of red, a tub of pringles, and voila – the perfect game experience when in Europe….oh yeah, and of course, don my moody Texas Tech hoody…
and when winning, totally piss off my neighbours with drunken celebrating in the early hours…

My thoughts

1. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN AND WHAT IS NOT A CONCERN AT ALL AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF FALL PRACTICES? Defense, Seth said it best.
2. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON OFFENSE? No real surprises. I expected Doege to do well a and all those great Rec. recruits to step up. My only real surprise, and a mild one, is that with all the speed at RB why have they not moved some to defense who will not play at offense? Namely, (brain dead on the name), the one who is not on the roster now for medical reasons has all the speed but can’t read a blitz.
3. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON DEFENSE? That the names we thought would be starting are not.
4. SO NOW THAT THE BREAK-UP LETTER HAS BEEN SENT, WHO DO YOU BLAME FOR THE BREAK-UP OF THE BIG 12? I blame ut the most. They are arrogant, egostical, and bullies. My t-shirt brother in law even laughs about it and he does not understand why the others in the conference want equality.
5. WHAT IS YOUR PRE-GAME RITUAL?
At the deer lease, usually, set up in my trailer watch or listen to the game. No other game on. If I make it to Lubbock, go the One Guy to eat, go to Spirit Shop, spend money, go to Alumni Center and tailgating area and drink beer. Always wear certain Tech hat, it is my game day hat. Piss my wife off by telling her not to talk when we are about to score and staying to the end of the game.

From a galaxy far away, where the earth quakes and hurricanes blow.....

1. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN AND WHAT IS NOT A CONCERN AT ALL AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF FALL PRACTICES? Lack of quality depth and aggressiveness on OL. Just guessed from the reports on this site. Lack of time for our CB and S to learn the D and to mature. We are vulnerable there and at LB really untested.

2. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON OFFENSE? That Trahan is still injured and that AJ is playing TE at all. Thought I would hear more about Kenny Williams also.

3. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON DEFENSE? The leadership by Mackey and Dees. You have to have leadership on a Smith-Mackey D (Sm-ack Attack). So glad Delvon is now eligible. That could take some pressure off the LB and DB until they mature into Glasgow’s D.

4. SO NOW THAT THE BREAK-UP LETTER HAS BEEN SENT, WHO DO YOU BLAME FOR THE BREAK-UP OF THE BIG 12? UT for being themselves. A&M for taking the easy way out. OU for being a wuss in everything that DOES affect them. Beebe for being himself and sucking up to UT.

5. WHAT IS YOUR PRE-GAME RITUAL? I park a car on campus the night before, filled with lawnchairs and bean-bag toss and a football. Next morning we walk to the car from home with backpacks full of steaming hot food and lots of cold drinks. We set up in the lawn and “intercept” friends as they walk to the game. I try to stay semi-lit so I do not toss my chow during the first Qtr. Wreck’em.

Concern & Surprises

1. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN AND WHAT IS NOT A CONCERN AT ALL AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF FALL PRACTICES? I am always concerned every year that the glowing pre-season reports in the LAJ and other media outlets talking about how great we are at each position. It seems like last year all we heard about prior to the first game was how great the D was going to be and then we are #119. It seems that the more positive press given to a position before the season the more likely it turns out to be a weakness. I think Chad is more of a straight-up guy so maybe we really have reason to be positive. I am not concerned about the O-line even with the center issues.
2. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON OFFENSE? Not much. I expect Seth to perform well, and the receivers are going to hold their own. If, and only if, Eric Stephens doesn’t fumble then he & the RBs will be a great surprise!
3. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON DEFENSE? The emergence of freshman as possible starters. Hopefully this is not all relative and these guys are just plain better then the JRs & SRs that started fall camp in front of them!
4. SO NOW THAT THE BREAK-UP LETTER HAS BEEN SENT, WHO DO YOU BLAME FOR THE BREAK-UP OF THE BIG 12? Ultimately UT. Nebraska & Colorado deserve some blame. OU didn’t stand up to UT at all!!! A&M should get it’s share too. I guess in the end we should blame Tech and the other 10 schools that didn’t FORCE UT to play fair.
5. WHAT IS YOUR PRE-GAME RITUAL? Nothing like when I lived in the Hub! But – get this – 7am Men’s Bible Study, then my daughters ballet lessons, then hopefully some College Game Day, and a warm up with a Sierra Nevada IPA or Fat Tire.

Sending Good Thoughts Blackbeard's Way

1. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN AND WHAT IS NOT A CONCERN AT ALL AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF FALL PRACTICES?

Ongoing Concern #1: Doege’s durability. If he goes down . . .

Ongoing Concern #2: Losing Koewn

Not Concerned: RB Depth

2. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON OFFENSE?

No idea. All information has come from the Ministry of Information. So it’s hard to say.

3. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON DEFENSE?

See number 2.

4. SO NOW THAT THE BREAK-UP LETTER HAS BEEN SENT, WHO DO YOU BLAME FOR THE BREAK-UP OF THE BIG 12?

Refusal to share revenues. That’s on UT, OU and A&M. Good job.

5. WHAT IS YOUR PRE-GAME RITUAL?

Night games: Nap, Black t-shirt. Headphones, Internet, Irish Coffee
Day Game: All of the above sans nap. Irish coffee, hold the coffee.

"This time it's different."

1. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN AND WHAT IS NOT A CONCERN AT ALL AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF FALL PRACTICES?
My biggest concern is weather or not Doege can step up as this Team’s QB. I think he can, but I have not seem him play a real game yet, and first year QBs can have a tough time. Graham Harrell got booed his first year playing.

Something that is not a concern at all would have to be the d-line. We have so much depth and so much talent there it is unreal. I never thought I would say the d-line would not be a concern for me at Texas Tech, but here I am.

2. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON OFFENSE?
I am going to agree with Seth Darrin moore is the biggest surprise and I am very glad that we have a receiver like that after loosing Lewis and Leong.

3. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON DEFENSE?
Giving up the long ball. I have read over and over that we keep giving up the long ball maybe this should go back to my first concern and Doege is a great QB, but I have a feeling that the secondary is having trouble with deep passes. I expected this new defense to never give up the long ball and that is surprising me.

4. SO NOW THAT THE BREAK-UP LETTER HAS BEEN SENT, WHO DO YOU BLAME FOR THE BREAK-UP OF THE BIG 12?
The Texas state congress and Baylor. The move to the pac-10 was all but assured until Baylor got left out. Congress did not like this for Baylor and bullied UT. UT was upset so they bullied everyone else and everyone else just took it. We would be in the pac-16 this year if it was not for the Texas state legislature.

5. WHAT IS YOUR PRE-GAME RITUAL?
Wear red and black and show up. During the game be as loud as I can be if I can talk after the game I did not do my job.

by Tyler Ball on Aug 26, 2011 7:53 AM CDT reply actions

This is one of the things Patterson highlighted in the Simplicity series....

…. the idea that once this D has been learned, it can be great in all phases – ………but that due to it’s core Run First philosophy and the way it puts the initial focus toward stuffing the gaps, any errors by the db’s can expose you to the big play. He took the time to point this out in a way that tells me he’s already accepted a learning curve and it’s pains.

So – worry, yes. But then again this may be a natural part of the learning curve. Hopefully we learn our way past it by the conference games.

Long Ball

Hopefully our D line, with the “SMACK Attack”, will get some pressure and limit the time opposing QB’s have to throw a long ball.

Who Knew?

1. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN AND WHAT IS NOT A CONCERN AT ALL AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF FALL PRACTICES?
The O-line is a concern, as the depth is just not there. The 2-deep shows that most of the back-ups are freshmen. And starting the year with your back-up center could be challenging.

Not a concern – The Safety position looks like the only solid position right now.

2. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON OFFENSE?

Marquez. This guy could be the next Wes Welker.

3. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON DEFENSE?

That Scott Smith has not been re-instated.

4. SO NOW THAT THE BREAK-UP LETTER HAS BEEN SENT, WHO DO YOU BLAME FOR THE BREAK-UP OF THE BIG 12?

Beebe and Dodds share the blame. Dodds for trying to run the conference and Beebe for letting him.

5. WHAT IS YOUR PRE-GAME RITUAL?

Living in Indiana, my ritual is trying to find the game on any network, and if that does not work, then trying to find it streaming on the internet somewhere. It’s tough living in Big 10 country.

But, but, but...

surely Notre Dame will change all of that for the great privilege of playing the Longhorns, right? Seth's number one is the one I am more excited about;

Neal Brown said this summer that our number one weakness would be at linebacker. To see a freshman Black Dees starting only confirms what he is saying. I think the silver lining here is that if a freshman can beat out experience, then this defense is starting to look like it might do some damage this year.

Lets fill up The Jones.

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.

Five thoughts;

1. Black Dees
2. Brady Marquez
3. Free Scotty
4. FooK Texas
5. College Game Day Live, then heavy drinking

1. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN AND WHAT IS NOT A CONCERN AT ALL AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF FALL PRACTICES?
Special Teams and young players making rookie mistakes. Not concerned about receivers or running game, We have alot of depth and someone will step up and be a play maker it all stems on Doege’s performance. I think the defense will be better with the new recruits including glasgow, but how much better remains to be seen.

2. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON OFFENSE? Marquez, who knew?

3. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON DEFENSE?
I am also suprised we could have Freshman starting at linebacker which is a good thing and shows they are good enough to beat out older guys for the position and they will be great in a few years. I think the D-line is gonna be strong and will make up for the young linebackers.

4. SO NOW THAT THE BREAK-UP LETTER HAS BEEN SENT, WHO DO YOU BLAME FOR THE BREAK-UP OF THE BIG 12?
Of course everyone says Texas for being greedy, but I think any big 12 team that was offered more money from the big 12 or offered a network from ESPN would take it. So I blame The Big 12 conference for allowing all this B.S. to happen.

5. WHAT IS YOUR PRE-GAME RITUAL?
Drink as much as possible because they don’t sell alcohol in the game.

1. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN AND WHAT IS NOT A CONCERN AT ALL AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF FALL PRACTICES?

Definitely Linebackers. We need to be able to stop the run or we’ll be in loads of trouble. We really haven’t had any star power at that position since Thomas IMO. I’m all for seeing Dees getting a shot this season.

2. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON OFFENSE?

Bradley Marquez picking up this offense so well and looks to be out performing some verteran WR’s. Also, Doege taking a large lead in the QB race which I was not expecting. I thought this competition would be much closer especially with Young. I really like Doege’s story and I’m pulling for this guy to be the next Harrell.

3. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON DEFENSE?

Leon Mackey, Delvon Simmons taking charge of that D-line and making an impact so early. Look out because our D-line may turn out to be the best in the conference. Very excited about the front 4.

4. SO NOW THAT THE BREAK-UP LETTER HAS BEEN SENT, WHO DO YOU BLAME FOR THE BREAK-UP OF THE BIG 12?

Blame it on poor leadership above all. Classic tail wagging the dog. UT is greedy and always will be. The solution is finding ways to beat them on the field which is what counts most. The aggies are delusional to think they can compete against SEC teams when they haven’t done anything on the grid iron for the last 10 years. One season removed form 6-7. I’m ready for them to move on and evaporate. The Tech-UT rivalry will take on a new light with the aggies gone and I look forward to that.

5. WHAT IS YOUR PRE-GAME RITUAL?

Drinking cold beer with friends and family. I love college football and I’m a very proud Red Raider displaying my flag on every game day at our home. I love dressing my 3 and 6 year old girls in red and black on game days when in Lubbock or Plano. I love tailgating (R-8 this season) and meeting great red raiders who share the common passion for Texas Tech.

Preface- I think we are a better, faster team than last years

1. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN AND WHAT IS NOT A CONCERN AT ALL AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF FALL PRACTICES?
Biggest concern is no one is scared of us anymore. I kinda miss the days when we had to score 100 point to win a game. I miss it b/c we could score 100 points. I don’t think the coaches will allow it. We have spent a lot of time this offseason knucke f*cking ourselves over this new 4-2-5. I’m all for having a solid defense. It will certianly help win a few games against the better teams, but I miss the days when “WE SCORE A LOT”. I think we are a better team this season, but so is everyone else in this confrence. My concern is how much better are we vs. how much is everyone else. I guess thats why we play the game. I hope the coaches (read: TT and NB) will not be afraid to just embaress some poor bastards by dough popping thier ass. I hope they score at will and work the scoreboard operator to death. Hopefully they throw professional coach courtesy out the window and run up the f*ing score.

Not concerned at all about our talent level. I think our guy’s can play ball and, talent wise, will surprise a lot of people this season. I can’t wait to hear some of the talking dingleberry’s at ESPeNis starting about half way through the season.

2. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON OFFENSE?
Marquez, for sure, but also the issues with the OL. I really thought that would be a big plus for the team this season. I’m just not sure if it’s b/c the DL is so much better or if they just haven’t stepped up.

3. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON DEFENSE?
The names of the players that are popping up. I expected the injuries from last year that allowed some of the younger players to get experience to pay dividends this season. It seams like a lot of the players from last year are falling behind some of the younger guys.

4. SO NOW THAT THE BREAK-UP LETTER HAS BEEN SENT, WHO DO YOU BLAME FOR THE BREAK-UP OF THE BIG 12?
This one is easy, I blame the members of the Big 12, Beebe, the AD’s, everyone. They should have stood up to ut and required a more equitable arrangement. You can’t blame ut for being arrogant wierdo’s any more than you can blame atm for being delusional wierdo’s. The affection for sheep is all on atm, though.

5. WHAT IS YOUR PRE-GAME RITUAL?
Wear the colors. Drink at least one Red Draw (Beer with Bloddy Mary mix and extra tabasco), preferably in a Tech cup, but it is more important that I drink the Red Draw. Find a place to watch or listen to the game.

PS. Fuck tu. (“Fuck Texas” is too general and could be construed as a slight on the greatest state on earth)…. Oh, and “FREE SCOTTY”

Cinco Preguntas

1. Concerns/non-concerns: concerned about lack of depth on OL & at cornerback; not concerned about skill position depth at all.
2. Offensive surprise: Kennard redshirting & Marquez’ rise up the depth chart.
3. Defensive surprise: Those young guns at linebacker (Lord, please let them be that good!).
4. Blame for Big 12 breakup: it’s nobody’s fault. When everyone is trying to out for their own self-interest, s#%¥ happens.
5. Rituals: home games – eat delicious breakfast of migas at El Burrito in Midland, drive to Lubbock listening to college game day, go to Alumni center, drink beer; away games (if not attending) – migas, watch game day, beer.

1. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN AND WHAT IS NOT A CONCERN AT ALL AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF FALL PRACTICES? — Biggest concern is OL, especially center…geez, the whole offense rides on this issue. My level of concern for the DL is waaaaaay down. Smiff or no Smiff.

2. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON OFFENSE? — It could be Darrin Moore, or it could be Brad Marquez…he has really moved up the depth charts this Fall.

3. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON DEFENSE? — without a doubt it is the way Dees is currently looking, a true freshman at linebacker ??? !!!

4. SO NOW THAT THE BREAK-UP LETTER HAS BEEN SENT, WHO DO YOU BLAME FOR THE BREAK-UP OF THE BIG 12? — it has always be UT. /s/ Nebraska

5. WHAT IS YOUR PRE-GAME RITUAL? It the game is on tv, turn on tv, tune in game, watch. If I am at the game, it will have been drive to Hawley, pick up very good friend with tickets, put on a red shirt, drive to game, watch.

Five Answers:

1. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN AND WHAT IS NOT A CONCERN AT ALL AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF FALL PRACTICES?
Biggest Non Concern: Seth Doege (OLine 2nd Place)
Biggest Concern: I have to agree with Seth….Linebackers. Where the hell is Sam Fehoko?!?!?

2. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON OFFENSE?

This is going to sound negative. In reality its a good thing….Along the lines of what Seth said regarding Darrin Moore; The falling off of guys like Swindall and other experienced WR leaders on the team. It makes me feel better to see guys like Moore, Marquez and McRabbit stepping up and helping create what will hopefully be a dynamic Receiving Corps.

3. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON DEFENSE?
Where did all this depth at DLine come from??? Im pleased to see all of our pass rushers taking their places on the starting blocks (so-to-speak), but where the hell did all these DT’s come from. Last year, I mourned the loss of MWade. This year we have at least SIX guys who could see playing time and be productive. (2nd Place: Where the hell is Sam Fehoko?)

my five answers

1. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN AND WHAT IS NOT A CONCERN AT ALL AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF FALL PRACTICES? My biggest concern is our QB I think it will end up a lot like potts who will be weak in confidence. Also the oline doesn’t really impress me much.

2. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON OFFENSE? I believe we will see more run this season due to a QB so unseasoned.

3. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON DEFENSE? Our defensive talent

4. SO NOW THAT THE BREAK-UP LETTER HAS BEEN SENT, WHO DO YOU BLAME FOR THE BREAK-UP OF THE BIG 12? I blame both schools for being pig headed and selfess.

5. WHAT IS YOUR PRE-GAME RITUAL? At home we cook nachos and chili dogs and tech out the house while talking to friends and family. In lubbock we goto either Spanky’s or one guys before or after the game depending on time and spend most of our time on campus walking or watching other games.

Good commentary (By Dan Wolken ) on the pending exit of the Aggies from the Big 12-2 and what this will all mean for the future of college football.
Both are to blame for this break-up. These two schools need to figure it out and fix this. I know it’s too late for that. But no more A&M / UT and A&M / Texas Tech games is kind of sad to see those rivalries go by the wayside.

5. WHAT IS YOUR PRE-GAME RITUAL?

At home, I make a big batch of queso, cook up some fajitas and pour some chilled Shiner and wait for kick-off wearing my Black Jeans, Tech t-shirt and drinking from my Tech engraved glass or using my Tech koozie on the beer can. At the game, eat some migas if it’s an early game or Bar-B-Q at Rudy’s for a late game. Wearing as much scarlet and black with Tech logos that I can based on the weather

My Five -

1. WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST CONCERN AND WHAT IS NOT A CONCERN AT ALL AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF FALL PRACTICES?
Special Teams and Secondary. Non concern would be our receivers and RB’s.

2. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON OFFENSE?
Marquez and Moore. I hope Moore is our deep threat guy. If Neal Brown sends in “6” or “all verticals”, we’re in for many TD’s.

3. WHAT HAS BEEN THE BIGGEST SURPRISE DURING FALL PRACTICE ON DEFENSE?
The pass rush. I think we’re going to see a lot of sacks. I also feel like the coaches might be playing the secondary down a bit. I think we’ll be surpised at the ability they have.

4. SO NOW THAT THE BREAK-UP LETTER HAS BEEN SENT, WHO DO YOU BLAME FOR THE BREAK-UP OF THE BIG 12?
The University Of Texas at Austin. You can’t place the blame anywhere else. Like my old man told me when I was younger, “there’s always somebody bigger and badder out there, watch your ass.” I feel that Texas is going to meet there’s shortly.

5. WHAT IS YOUR PRE-GAME RITUAL?
This is all under the assumption we’re playing a night game and I’m at home. Budweiser the night before, small doses until 22:00, follow with Wild Turkey for sleep aid (Games get me all nervous). Wake up and find Tylenol and Bloody Mary Mix. Cook breakfast for the wife and kiddo. Check DTN. Hang flag in front of house. Start calling all my Tech alumni buddies in town. Harass opposing teams fanbase on phone. Liquor store opens, buy things and stand in line. Things consist of Wild Turkey, Crown Royal Black, Shiner Smokehaus (if available), Shiner Holiday Cheer (if available), Budweiser, Don Julio Special Reserve (for bloody maria’s and Cesar’s), Zing Zang Bloddy Marry Mix, Tecate, Big Rock Traditional Ale (if available), and Cutty Sark Scotch. Why Cutty Sark? It’s punishment for me if we lose the game.

Fire up grills and call people to come over and hang out. Make sure all TV’s are on football and hide remotes from the rest of family. Armadillo Eggs and Sausage go on first. Followed by tri-tips and more armadillo eggs. Check beer fridge for optimum drinking temperature often. Back to store for more beer. Lunch. Arrival of friends and family. Kick out opposing fanbase. Throw things at their vehicle. More beer. Call Fred and invite over. Promptly get more food. Might as well get beer while out and about. Everybody is here now. 2-3 charcoal grills cooking out front. Beer fridge is stocked and ready to be stocked some more. Garage TV is on, radio is on in all rooms of the house, TV in living room is on, bedroom TV is on, DTN ready on iPad, iMac, and iPhone. Harass opposing fanbase more, and initiate fight. Game meal consist of raw meat and onions. Usually steak, fajitas, and asado.

Kickoff – do not walk in front of the TV or I will kill you. Do NOT antagonize me for walking around the room and pacing nervously. Do not make fun of the fact that I get under center behind my couch or stand in the shotgun in my kitchen. I then call RdrPwr and tell him I saw him on TV all the while trying to not sound drunk. RdrPwr informs me he’s not there, and I instantly call him a f***ing liar and burp loudly.

Scream at the TV all night while chest bumping Fred and Tommy. Fred wins everytime. Tommy goes thru opposing wall. Other friends watch the game from the kitchen. The living room is considered a full contact zone along with the garage. Shotgun one beer at the beginning and end of each quarter, otherwise maintain 4-6 beers per quarter. Proven formula with years of research.

Problem with hanging out at your house,

Is I may as well just go to the damn game. Our tailgates start early. Like 7 am the monday before early. Someone in our group is getting our spots. We’ve been front right corner, spots 1 and 2 at the very least, every game the past 4 years. I have passed that torch on. I’ll undoubtedly be the first one up Saturday morning because I’m the only one with a real job apparently. But I start texting/calling everyone I know in town and some I don’t. I put an emphasis on the female calls. If it’s a night game, then we’ve already made our punch the night before. A case of cheap light beer, handle of vodka, big container of pink lemonade mix, and 2 2 liters of orange crush. It is delicious, and it will knock you on your ass in a hurry. Food usually consists of an assortment of grilled (sometimes smoked) sausages, boudain, stuffed and wrapped dove, burgers, armadillo eggs, and fajitas. Our little group usually finishes off 3 cases of beer and one big gatorade cooler of our drink mix…. all during the 3 hours of raidergate before the game starts. As we leave for the Jones, we shotgun a beer or two a piece, and fill our cups up with two more beers, and find a purse or bag or something to stuff a few extras. We make sure that we have at least 3 a piece between the science quad and the Jones. Then after the game it is either concert or beer pong and we never know till its over. I think you should come with us.
