Red Raider Gridiron | Stephens Fired as Returner; Mackey Stays Humble

Texas St. vs. Texas Tech Webcast
I haven't given this any sort of front page consideration, but I should. You can watch the Texas St. vs. Texas Tech game online and it's only $9.95 for an entire month. I've done this before, with the Nevada game a couple of years ago and canceled my subscription as soon as the game was over. You may want to keep the subscription for the month in case you want to re-watch the game (I think that you can do this, but please correct me in the comments).
Notebooky
LAJ's Don Williams has a notebook where he says that DE Leon Mackey is humbled by the fact that he's been named the starter and knows that it's only for one week. LAJ's Williams also writes that RB Eric Stephens has been "fired" as the kickoff returner and those duties will go to RB Ben McRoy and IR Austin Zouzalik. Tuberville also says that Stephens will get 20 to 25 carries a game. Stephens also talked a bit about his fumbling problems that plagued him last year:
"I really haven’t had the problem lately," he said. "It’s not on my mind like it was last year. I’m thinking that was a big part of it. When you fumble that much, you start thinking about it too much, and it becomes a burden."
Tech coaches have taken steps to address the issue. The Red Raiders do one drill with a weight-anchored rope tied to the football providing resistance. In another, they lug a water-filled football that Stephens estimates weighs 8 to 10 pounds.
"No telling how much that thing weighs," Tuberville said.
"Coach Scott had one for a while," Stephens said, "but they’ve incorporated it into practice now, so it’s a new deal. Every day, we have a period isolated just for ball security, and it’s not just for running backs. It’s for every position."
I love it. Get better.
Fran Speaks
DMN's Mike Graham writes that Texas St. coach Dennis Franchione says that this team will be different from any other team:
"We are going to be different from any team I've coached," Franchione said. "I read an article where they said Texas Tech will play about half of their defensive package, because they're young on defense. I'm sure they're looking into how they're going to prepare and what are they going to see.
"First games are always that way. Even though we've watched film about what they've done, first games show up and they do things you haven't seen them do before. That's how upsets happen sometimes. You're not prepared for some things and you get caught off guard."
I'm calling bullsh on this. I think that a coach doesn't like change. Heck, Texas St. is utilizing a 4-2-5 defense.
More stuff after the jump.
Big 12 Conference Realignment
Interesting. CBS Sports Bryan Fisher writes that the Big 12 and various schools are claiming that their emails are super-secret and the courting emails or correspondence:
The Big 12 is essentially claiming their emails contain trade secrets and they can't be released. A call to the league office for comment about the matter was not returned. It is not known what the folks in Dallas are trying to withhold but if Texas released the Longhorn Network's contract with third parties IMG and ESPN, you do wonder what it is the Big 12 is trying to hold back.
What happens now is the schools will gather all of the emails the conference wants withheld, will then send them to the attorney general, who will rule on whether they can be released. This will take some time of course.
And that's why the Big 12 is doing this. They want to keep some prying eyes out of their realignment business. It probably won't happen but at least they'll have some time to sort a few issues out.

I agree with you. And what the hell is he talking about? That didn’t make any sense to to me. Must still be using aggie logic?

Aggie logic for sure
“Even though we’ve watched film about what they’ve done, first games show up and they do things you haven’t seen them do before. That’s how upsets happen sometimes.” He either thinks that TX St. is favored to win or he’s dumb
Teahupoo
That wave is one of the greatest hydraulic events that man has ever tried to ride. It is created by a underwater channel that funnels the swell over a depressed reef, that is why the wall just appears essentially out of nowhere. When the wave forms it leaves about 18-24" from the top of the reef to the top of the water, so if you go over the falls then expect to get rolled over sharp coral by a couple thousand metric tons of water.

So disappointed.
ut is "The Evil Empire"
Whats he done now?
Or not done, as usually is the case…
Wouldn’t one need expectations to be disappointed?

Fuck Fran!!!
He sucked at A&M so I can’t begin to comprehend how he will become any better at Texas State. Are they Division I yet? NAIA at best…
ol' Fran
After nuclear armageddon, there’s only going to be two things left on earth: cockroaches and Dennis Francione, still coaching somewhere. I can’t think of any active coach with more tenure and less success.

Leon Mackey has a great attitude, and it speaks volumes of him that so many of his teammates
are starting to view him as an emotional core of the defense and the team as a whole. Riding the bumpy road of JUCO-dom obviously did him a lot of good; he’s displaying the kind of character and maturity that you rarely see from people at that age.
Stephens "Fired" as kick returner?
Fumble-itis? Isn’t he our all-time leader at that? Will he be doing punt returns?
Concentrating on his RB duties...
unless his fumblings return, then Ronnie Daniels will be the lead back..
We have a stock pile of running backs that can do that.

That we do...
but i’m guessingthat first dibs go to Ronnie, not Aaron Crawford or any of the others…
its just cause hance has not fired anyone this year and
needed a woody.

Talent at Running Back
will assure that pressure to perform never abates. Stephens better shine or he’ll be replaced. I think Aaron Crawford will surprise this year and lead the team with rushing TDs. I’ll be surprised if Stephens ever carries the ball 20 times in a game, much less 25. Too much talent should assure that touches are spread around. Also, I thought we were still throwing 60 % of the time?
I hope Stephens is allowed to return kicks because I think he has a talent for it and I don’t think just anyone can do it. McRoy and Zou have been tried before and didn’t do anything with the opportunity. I’ll reserve judgment until they’ve had a few opportunities this year, but I think Texas Tech’s best returner is Stephens, and I think field position is a critical aspect for how this team is going to play. Leach’s teams never had the luxury of the field position that last year’s team had because he never had a kick returner as good as Stephens; but, Leach’s teams didn’t care where they started on the field. Brown’s offense’s performance last year was seriously affected by field position and needed to start outside the twenty or twenty- five yard line to have successful drives. Really good kick returners don’t just fall out of trees, and I think Tech better be prepared to to put Stephens back at the position if the replacements don’t shine, because Stephens shines in that very important role. Of course, if the offense performs regardless of field position this year, my concern about this position may be a non-issue.
I’ve got my fingers crossed and hope that Mackey and the influx of talent on defense return Tech to a semblance of the defensive teams that I watched when I was a student at Tech. Although the offensive orgy has been fun, it has bothered me to watch teams march up and down the field on the Raiders. I’d sacrifice a little offense to see some “punch you in the mouth defense” again. It all starts on the line. Do we have enough big tough dudes with motors who are primed to attack? I don’t think we’ll really know until Scott Smith returns, but enough of the studs should be playing for the talent to start to tell.
Stephens is a fine returner...
Probably the best we have, but if he is going to get the lions share of the touches at rb, we need to get some other guys back there who can do it too. McRoy & Zouz have had few opps in the past, surprised that Zouz is getting a look at KR as well as PR (He’s been solid but unspectacular at PR). I’d like to see the speed guys spell Stephens if needed, McRoy, Marquez, Grant (If not redshirted) and Jeffers (If he’s gonna be used at all…)
Field position is of course very important, but the threat to go the distance, something that Stephens has rarely done, is vital in keeping the oppo on their toes…
