TEXAS TECH OFFENSE VS. TEXAS ST. DEFENSE

I think we know what to expect from the Texas Tech offense, but I'm really interested to see all of the new toys. There are so many newcomers that could make a difference and if there is a game that we can expect to see, it would be this game due to the fact that it is most likely to be lopsided. When I looked back at Texas St.'s statistics from last year (and keep in mind that these statistics are FCS rankings and out of 117 teams) it was the defense that struggled the most historically. The Texas St. offense has usually been pretty good, but the defense has been abysmal for quite some time and would guess that this is the reason for the change to Dennis Franchione. For those of you who don't know, Franchione and Gary Patterson are linked as far back as Fran being the head coach at New Mexico. Fran then brought Patterson with him to TCU, who eventually became the head coach, and from what I can tell, they started to run the 4-2-5 defense while at New Mexico. I haven't done the research to figure out whether or not Fran has always run a 4-2-5, but I'd guess that he's run something similar, something with a 4-man front.

From the preview of the Bobcats I remember their linebackers being more highly rated of their defense and two of last year's starters were returning, but still, it's a defense that gave up over 180 yards rushing alone. It's tough to turn around a defense. In fact, I've always thought that turning around an offense is easier than turning around a defense because turning around a defense is based more on having actual athletes and players who can compete rather than a change in scheme. Despite having one recruiting class, I'm sure that Franchione won't be able to completely re-haul the defense in just one year.

I do think that Texas Tech has a distinct advantage offensively. If nothing else, it should be about pace and if Texas Tech is as fast as they were last year as noted by RMN's Bill Connelly, Texas Tech was one of the fastest paced teams last year:

Though it wasn’t the true Leach Airraid by any means, the Red Raiders often looked like the Tech the college football world has come to expect in 2010. The Red Raiders threw the ball, committed to their identity and played at a pace amongst the country’s fastest. The identity is preserved by offensive coordinator Neal Brown, who was brought aboard prior to 2010 after running a tremendous Troy offense, and his philosophy isn't all that different than Leach's. Tech’s change in 2010 wasn’t in identity, it was just in effectiveness.

A running game that was used both sparsely and effectively under Leach was just sparse, and while Tech was decent on passing downs, they faced too many passing downs to thrive. They were strong in the red zone and protected the passer well, but the hot and cold nature of Tech’s big play threats mirrored the ups and downs of the team’s entire season. Now, the Red Raiders must replace their top two quarterbacks, their leading rusher, and two receivers responsible for 37 percent of all Tech pass targets in 2010.

I don't think that the transition is going to be too much for Doege to handle, but I also really like the idea of Doege warming up against Texas St. It's not going to be easy, but there are players on the team, players that really no one knows about, that should pick up the pieces. The staff has been incredibly high on Darrin Moore and if Alexander Torres returns to form, you'll see two explosive players that should take advantage of their size relative to who is covering them. You could of course say that it's foolish to think that players that were back-ups will pick up where Leong, Lewis, Batch and Potts left off last year, but I don't think this team is devoid of talent.

The biggest question is the injury of C Justin Keown and I'm excited to see how Terry McDaniel takes hold of this position. I think that he's smart enough to make all of the necessary calls and I don't think that you'll see him struggle. If anything, I think that McDaniel may struggle a bit with leverage as he is every bit of 6'6" (I don't care what the roster says, he's big) and the starting noseguard, Deshun Williams, for Texas St. is 5-11/290. Get you some of that.

Last but not least, given the overall porous nature of the Texas St. defense (again, these were against FCS teams, the Texas Tech offense should be really good. If not, I'm going to be worried for the rest of the year, but I have faith in Doege and RB Eric Stephens and the wealth of receivers that have an opportunity to make an impact on this team. I think more than anything, Tuberville, Brown and Glasgow want playmakers on their team. Let's see what you got.

Now it's up to you fair reader.  Tell me what you think the important matchups are from the Texas Tech offense vs. the Texas St. defense.

**** I realize that we're dealing with 2010 statistics and TSU's FCS numbers and that to compare the two aren't entirely accurate or fair, but it's one week and next week, we'll be dealing with real numbers from the 2011 season.

I want to see how well our passing defense has improved. This is gonna be a major factor in how good our defense will perform in the Big 12.

Can we really determine this from a game against Texas State?

"There is no chance he will win, but if you think about it carefully he would be a pretty good candidate. He says a lot with no substance, he's proven he can be bought, he's dishonest, and he has the personality of a TV evangelist so I think he would be perfect in Washington!"-- Mike Leach (When asked if he would vote for Craig James for Senate)

Look, obviously 99% of the time this game is going to be a win, so I'm looking at it as an opportunity to diagnose problems that will crop up in a big way when this team hits the meat of its schedule

I think it’s time to worry if we see these things:

1) The defense gives up Weber St-type numbers to Texas State’s offense. For me to feel like these guys have a shot at a top-50 slot this year, they need to come out of the gate and crush inferior competition, both along the lines and in the secondary.

2) The receivers can’t get significant YAC. This offense lives and dies based on the receivers’ ability to turn a 0-6 yard pass into a 12-25 yard gain. If they can’t make that happen against the worst pass defense in…what FCS conference is Texas St still technically a part of?

3) The O-Line can’t get a push for the running game. As nice a backfield as we have at the moment, we might be in for another year of 60 yards on 30 carries per game if they can’t open up gaping holes this weekend.

4) Seth Doege gets charitable with the ball. You can sacrifice athletic ability at the QB position in this offense, but a bad decision-maker is a non-starter and means bad things when the veteran DCs get ahold of him in conference play.

5) (And I can’t believe I’m saying this) Go ahead and put Nancy in several times at TE. I want to know if she’s capable of playing the position. Make sure it’s for both blocking and passing plays. Because if James blows a blocking assignment, I want it to be against someone on Texas St’s defense instead of a Big XII defense who is going to cause injuries. If James is the best TE option, so be it (yes, I just got nauseous too), but if not, you’ve made a legitimate evaluation, and can tell Craig to stick it.

Trench dominance

O-Line manhandling their guys so tech can score often and early. Spray it around so all the starting wideouts get some balls and put points on the board, before getting the 2s and 3s out there.
When the game is won, ideally by half time, test out all the various running backs, get them some experience. Try some of the pistola, 2 back, tight end formations etc.
As early as possible, get the second team line out, they need to step up, and game time will help with this for later battles..

Seth you opened a can of West Texas Bull Worms
The defensive scheme under Chad Glasgow is out to prove they can play. I don’t except to see much hesitation. Even mistakes will be at full speed, disruption followed by a cleanup hitter, followed by intimidation on the next series as the defense starts to overmatch the Bobcats offensive capabilities. A safety or linebacker will be crashing the pocket on nearly every play.
On offense the 4 sideline wigwagggers will be faster. The Neal Browns game day construct just is going to be necked down from where it was last year. Doege maybe a game day youngster but in fact he’s a 4 year D 1 player who got flogged by Lincoln Riley and Mike Leach and now has had almost 2 years of listening to Coach Brown. I don’t see the pressure point, the over thinking it, just execute and have fun. Time now.

where i come from, flogging is a whole different deal........sorry for the WTF

coffee is not the problem, i just woke up this past week or so and discovered that college football is upon me, then i see where Mac likes older men as QB’s regardless of talent level. Next thing you know, we don’t have the hitler youth to kick around any more. I see that a governor from Texas wants to be president……..yeah, right, that will never happen….oh wait. Now if you tell me that Tech is looking for a new chancellor, you have my attention.

I am looking for...

Total domination in all three phases. A busted play or two on D due to our youth, but given the competition the score should be a lot to a little. Second team should definitely get some work.

We have not been this far under the radar in years, but I think we steadily improve each game and have our coming out party at home against Aggie to preserve our undefeated record.

The good news.....

about the TTU offense since 2000 is that TTU isn’t just 2 deep in the skill positions but even 3 and 4 deep in some spots…..so alot of the WR’s have had reps in real games….Zou and Torres can be the leaders till the others pick it up….Corndog looked great with the ball in his hands last year, he just has to make sure and catch it!!!! Doege will be fine, like was mentioned above he has had 4 years of the Cap’t/Mad Scientist Jr.! Stephens just needs to keep his hands on the ball and all the new folks just need the ball in space early on then be ready to go by Big 12-2-atm time. Wreck’Em Tech

Can't get to hung up on the score;

If Tubby had his way, we would win this game 10-7. I fully expect to see 70 run and 30 pass Saturday. Doege said as much in his press conference Monday.

"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.

Or he would win it 2-3.

It’s happened before.

Maybe he will run 70

But I doubt it. I think he will want to beat them as bad as he can in a sportsmanship way so that we look good to in any realignment situation. Maybe that is positive thinking though.

I seriously doubt Tech will intentionally run up the score...

Tech will probably focus on speed, rotation, execution and giving the young players some experience. I personally would like to see a defensive domination even by the second and third strings. I would like speed and power running plays with different looks that give give future opponents something to worry about and have to plan for. I would like to see a couple of long balls to prove that we can still stretch the field.

Around here football is bigger than the state of Texas!

This is a game where we will be able to get the 3rd string some playing time.
So i don’t think well run up the score that much.

Playing reserves is good

but it has limited value unless you let them run the same offense that the 1’s do.

by mojavereject on Aug 31, 2011 1:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Exactly Right Btech

I hate the gentlemen’s game, we would not want to run up the score crap. Attack every single play on both sides of the ball. If you score 70 or 17 so be it but try to score. That philosophy fills the stands, it sells t-shirts. That is not a tradition the Catfish needs to start but one he should continue.

not trying to score is seriously taking the piss out of the opposition….you’re there to execute to the best of your abilities, nobody can quarrel when you do just that…

The best argument for keeping the offensive pedal pressed at all times is reps

How many chances will your players have to run plays against a real defense? If you change what you normally do because of the score at the time you waste the chance to get your backups reps doing the normal passing offense. I’m not sure if I read it in Swing Your Sword or heard it on the radio show but that was Leach’s philosophy & it makes a lot of sense. The more times you repeat a play the more automatic it becomes.
