Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. New Mexico Lobos | What We Know
(1-0, 0-0) |
Date | September 17, 2011 |
![]() (0-2, 0-1)) |
PRIOR OPPONENTS | Thus far, the Lobos have played the Colorado St. Rams, losing 10-14 at home (SBN coverage), and against the Arkansas Razorbacks, losing 3-52 (SBN coverage). What's distressing for New Mexico was that they gave up 632 yards, 373 passing and 259 rushing, against Arkansas. Texas Tech is coming off of a bye week and in the first week of the season, defeated the Texas St. Bobcats, 50-10.
WHAT TEXAS TECH CAN EXPECT | If the boxscore against Colorado St. is any indication, New Mexico ran the ball 48 times for 201 yards (their quarterback was presumably sacked for a loss of 51 yards), but was only able to net 150 yards. Even then, New Mexico had 31 pass attempts, plus the 48 rushing attempts puts New Mexico at a fairly fast pace. Defensively, I can't say that I know much about the Colorado St. offense other than the fact that Colorado St. only gained 270 yards against New Mexico and looking at the numbers, despite the win, Colorado St. wasn't very effective. Against Arkansas, it wasn't pretty. As mentioned above, Arkansas had their way against New Mexico in just about every way imaginable. I think it's reasonable to think that New Mexico will try to rush the ball as much as humanly possible against Texas Tech and keep the game close. Texas Tech's poor showing against Texas St. against the rush probably gives New Mexico some thought that they'll be able to be somewhat successful running the ball against Texas Tech.
OPPONENT PLAYERS SPOTLIGHT | It appears that QB Tarean Austin, a dual-threat quarterback, who completed 65% of his passes for 179 yards and ran 25 times for 105 total yards (although Austin ended up losing 48 for whatever reason) for a net of 57 yards rushing against Colorado St. and had 162 yards passing and 31 rushing yards against Arkansas, is the guy for New Mexico. Austin was replaced by B.R. Holbrook, who is not a running threat like Austin, but was marginally more effective, throwing for 40 yards on 7 of 10. I mentioned this during the offseason, but Lamaar Thomas, the Ohio St. transfer, did have one long catch, 27 yards against CSU, and is, I think, UNM's punt-returner, kickoff-returner, and overall deep-threat. He broke a bone in his back and will be out for the game. Defensively, LB Carmen Messina continues to make plays, which isn't a suprise. He had 8 tackles against CSU (2 TFL), but just 5 tackles against Arkansas. DE Ugo Uzodinma had the only sack for the game.

Glasgow says ABQ will be fired up, thats an understatement. Those guys remind me of a high school team that just plays nasty, late hits, hits out of bounds, kicking and stomping etc. How many of our guys have to get hurt until we stop scheduling this game?
Hey Tubs this is the Wild West, Good guys wear white, were the Red Raiders we wear BLACK. ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Dont buy the Espn/Disney/ABC hype ! Playoffs are just spin to hide their agenda of owning our favorite sport.
that doesnt even address the situation in the stands and parking lot

Look at thier record
Can you blame them? At some point the frustration of always losing has got to show through.

If they want change
they have to stop going to the games. Get 5K people or less showing up and you get a new coach.
That was the plan in "Major League"
If Cleveland put a crappy enough team on the field and lost enough games, they could move to Miami. (The manager indicating his “regard” for Corbin Bernsen’s contract also probably speaks loudly to our issues with contractual reliance.)
Instead, they beat the Yankees on the strength of Charlie “Winning” Sheen’s fastball. If that’s the gameplan, who’s our tiger blood warrior?

Going to the game?
Is anyone going to the game this weekend? I will be there with some friends tailgating all day. We plan to start around 7:00 am but we will see how Friday night at Sandia Casino goes. It would be nice to meet up with some fellow DTNers.
I'll be in Ruidoso
but probably in no condition to ride out there.

I was just checking
I don’t think I do either. But if its on versus it will be streamed online somewhere.
I'd be interested to see if this is the year
that Tech can actually put together a complete effort against these guys. Not that they necessarily have to play well to win, but it’d be fun to see for once.

Tech better come to Albuquerque prepared to play.
I was at last year’s game and was disappointed despite the final outcome. I’m driving to Lubbock this Saturday to celebrate Mom’s 91st on Sunday, so I’ll miss the game this week. If you don’t think the Lobos could pull a surprise, just look at what their Futility Bowl competitor down south did at Minnesota this past weekend.
pfft.. I was there the year we actually lost to UNM
THAT was pathetic

Me too
& it was pathetic. Of course I was also at the Holiday Bowl later that year when that same Tech team beat #5 Cal! Hope we beat the Lobos soundly, but I really hope we just keep getting better each week.

Will Ronnie Daniels play?
It will be interesting to see if Tuberville lets RD play before his home “crowd.” (I use the quotes because there may not be 20,000 people in the stands.) If not, his transgression must have been serious and may have bought him a redshirt year.
I like our chances
against a less than stellar Lobo squad, especially with the extra week to game plan. I think we will be able to overcome the white helmets and win by 3 TDs.

" the white helments shouldnt be so bad" , said Joe Paterno.
"As we continue to merely "talk about championships""
or the need for moving pictures of the other team...
