Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. New Mexico Lobos | Who's Trending
DOEGE AND MOORE HOOKING UP | WR Darrin Moore was somewhat of a known quantity last year, but 12 catches for 221 yards, 18.42 YPC, and 1 touchdown is a really nice way to announce your presence to the rest of the Big 12. Texas Tech has lacked a true #1 threat (apologies to Lyle Leong and Detron Lewis) since Crabtree left. Both Leong and Lewis were an integral part of the offense last year. In fact, the scoring of Leong was uncanny and unbelievable at times, but Moore is more physically imposing than Leong, while Lewis was never the game-breaker that I thought he would be as a true freshman, but he certainly caught his fair share of passes. The one thing that just about everyone has noticed was the fact that those passes from QB Seth Doege weren't short dumps that required Moore to make plays after the catch. What Doege and Moore did do was look like they've been playing catch for years, and maybe they did do this all of last year. The chemistry was really something special and I have to believe that the idea that Moore created such a stir with his performance last Saturday, at the very least made New Mexico take notice and had to spend some time as to how to account for a 6-4/215 receiver that can go over the top of most defensive backs.
FORCING TURNOVERS | Any time that a team is +3 in turnover margin, that's fantastic. The problem of course last week was that there were fumbles on Texas Tech's side of the offense and you could chalk those fumbles to just bouncing the right way for Texas Tech. And as many of you pointed out after the game, forced fumbles and interceptions are almost impossible to predict. I've always thought that there really isn't any meaningful way to think that a defense will continue a trend of turnovers, especially after one game. In fact early last year, the Texas Tech defense was making sacking the opposing quarterback, Brian Duncan looked like he was going to be a beast at defensive end as he had 6 sacks in the first 4 games and 1 sack the rest of the season. While Jarvis Phillips already had 4 interceptions after the first 3 games. It's sort of like the market, past performance is not always indicative of future success. For this defense to be successful, just like any other defense, they must work to continue to force opposing teams into mistakes and poor decisions. The week before last, it was a start in the right direction: 7 TFL; 3 pass break-ups; and 4 forced fumbles.
So much more after the jump.
POROUS RUSH DEFENSE | There's no pretty way to spin this other than the defense has to be better. I mentioned after the game last week that the rush defense wasn't necessarily better in the second half. In the first half, the defense gave up 142 yards on 35 touches for an average of 4.05 yards per touch. In the second half, the results weren't any better. The defense gave up 171 yards on 37 touches for 4.62 yards per touch. The defense was saved in that half by the fact that none of those drives resulted in a scoring drive and there were 3 punts and 4 fumbles for Texas St. in the second half. The 2 longest drives by Texas St., 64 yards in the first drive (resulting in a fumble) and 41 yards in the last drive (ending in the half). The hope is that DC Chad Glasgow actually did make some halftime adjustments and that certainly appeared to be the case as the running lanes that appeared in the first half weren't as prevalent in the second half.
NEWCOMERS PERFORMED | It was rightly pointed out, as I tried to list all of the freshment who played or players who had a redshirt removed. I forgot, again, about DT Delvon Simmons, who the announcers said that he played, but I haven't been able to find in any boxscore. Still, you had players like IR Marquez Bradley, who caught his first touchdown pass on his first reception of his career. RB DeAndre Washington looked a bit nervous, but he also looked electric with 6 carries for 38 yards and 1 touchdown. LB Blake Dees (8 tackles and 1 TFL) and LB Sam Eguavoen (3 tackles) seeing significant playing time. SS Pete Robertson (fumble return) and DE Kindred Evans (1 TFL; 1 sack; 1 forced fumble).
NEED MORE FROM RUNNING BACKS | There was some good and bad to the running backs not seeing any screen passes. On one hand, the running backs did receive 28 carries for 164 yards and 5.8 yards per carry. But there was nothing in terms of a screen game. What OC Neal Brown did try to do, I think, was rather than involve the running backs in the screen game, he tried to involve the receivers with passes and jail-break screens. I think that Brown will still use the running back screen, especially to help relieve pressure defense, but I think that he was maybe trying to make sure that all of the skill position players received some touches and were involved in the offense. Obviously, WR Darrin Moore was the big recipient of Doege's passes last Saturday, but other than the 12 passes to Moore, Doege found 7 different receivers. Granted, the most that they caught was 2 catches and you want to see players other than just Moore get down the field, but the running backs out of the backfield can help open up the offense as well, especially considering that RB Eric Stephens may be the most dynamic play-maker on the team.

I had a dream one time that we played football before 2010, and in this dream we played a defense similar to this. We called it Bend but don’t Break.
actually, they called Spike's defense "bend by don't break"
“they” called the defense in the ten years that we did not play “nonexistant”, yet somehow had we played football in those ten years that we did not play football, we won a shitpot full of games. Also it would have been a very exciting brand of football had we played during that time period.
"As we continue to merely "talk about championships""
I believe Ruffin would have said that about his if he had coached at TTU
But I agree, I believe it would have been the best time for Tech football.
I really like what they did to the stadium and all the facility upgrades during the last ten years too.

That would be 189 total Net yards
That would be only 77 net yards rushing with a 2.3 yard average per attempt….But still I get where you were going with that!

The Wyoming stats are probably
from the way we undermined Texas State’s mojo in the second half with take-aways and quick td’s…..
or that Wyoming has a better defense.

In the second half Simmons entered the game.
I am really excited about B Marquez.. If Moore can continue to dominate, then BM will be really togh to cover, then with a healthy Alex, and a freshman TE Amaro, our running game should really improve.
In the days that we did not play football, I read about a coach who believed that you pass to set up the run.
I would like to see us pass more on first down, second down, third down, and fourth down.

Running backs
I really want to see what Daniels can do. We will need a bigger bodied back to run over defenses and pound the ball in on these short yardage situations. I think he will have a monster game against NM if they give him the touches. Stephens is good but if he fumbles one more time they need to take his ass out.
As far as defense goes, im a bit worried about not being able to stop the run. If we can’t do it against Texas state, teams like Texas are gonna run us over. They have big backs like malcom Brown and the other dude thats 250lbs. that they use on goal line.
Of course its starts with improvement at the O line.

I hate to start off this morning with Conference realignment; but it's time for Hance and Bailey to speak out.
According to Orangebloods.com it looks like the Thorns are headed to the ACC. You can ride Bevo with this one. The Thorns are not giving up the LHN under any circumstances. I am certain that the Wool Sweater League is out for the Throns.
It is time for Hance and Bailey to speak out. I was giving them the benefit of the doubt on their silence, but now I am convinced they are incapable of running Texas Tech. In my opinion their silence is based on ignorance. I am sick and tired of our leadership.

Hance and Bailey we need direction. ATM is getting it,, OU and OSU are getting it, and Texas already has it, so what is your plan. You don’t have one you bumbling worthless good for nothing back stabbing leaders.
I do not, under any circumstances want to play in the ACC or SEC. I would rather stick with a watered down Big 12-2-4 and steal from the MWC, CUSA, and The WAC before we go with the Throns.
At least we have a football game this week. Please Tubby, don’t run the ball on first down every play. It might help the running game if you would change it up a little. And, not just on the first play of the game.

All I’m asking that if we could not use that could be considered racially insensitive, that would be outstanding. I know, that could be a lengthy list and I think that, for the most part, I’ve tried to be nice in how I ask that things not be said. That’s all I’m asking.

I will make a prediction that OU and OSU will never get a Pac 12 invite that does not include UT!
Ever!
Of Course I am no expert, and I could very well be wrong, but that is the feeling I have. There was a report a few days ago that the Pac 12 had already told them no, and then magically an OU mouthpiece runs a story that they are going to apply to the Pac 12. Of course they had to run that story, so OU could save face. Then the next day, yesterday, they start running stories that maybe this PAC 12 thing is not what they really wnat, and all they Really want is a stable conference…. sure…
Fact is that the Pac 12 presidents will not vote for these two to come as a package that does not include UT.

This is a tough one to call for sure;
The Thorns are not going to the Wool Sweater League. That LHN has taken on a life of its own. They are infected with it, and probably for good reason. They are not giving it up for anyone, and I love how they are tyring to pull the rest of us with them to the ACC. I say Fu Tx.
Also, OU and OSU are done with the Thorns and Big 12. The Thorns have destroyed and fragmented the conference. What a legacy for Dodds. I can’t see a scenario where the WSL does not take them. The longer this thing drags out, the more I empathise with ATM.
I would like for our leadership to come out and tell us where we are going, or at least take a position.

In my opinion economically the option for each Texas institution to thrive is...
…to go their separate ways (A&M to the SEC, UT independent or ACC, TTU to the PAC, Baylor to somewhere.) One of the problems with the SWC was that there were too many competing schools for such a small media geographical footprint. Because of ecnomics and media exposure some merged into larger conference making the Big 12. Behind the scenes UT manouvered its power base manipulating others to the point that it became too powerful resulting in the current situation that we all hate. So, the problem again is the economic realities of media contracts and number of television sets for the number of institutions represented. Perhaps the best economic and power sharing solution is for 3 Texas institutions to compete in 3 separate conferences. When you think about this from a broad viewpoint that would certainly maximize exposure for the state of Texas across the nation from the Pacific to the Atlantic. With Texas institutions being in 3 separate conferences the fans in those 3 institutions would probably get to see more of their favorite games on television. Perhaps going west is the best thing for Tech to get out of the shadow of UT and to grow academically and socially with the west coast. Perhaps the best thing for A&M is to associate with the SEC schools. The aggies would really fit more in that culture anyway. In my opinion the best option for UT is to go independent. They have a culture of being better than anyone else. The best place for people like that is to be separate from others. In my opinion, the main disadvantage is that parents in Texas will have to send their kids off to distant places. So, what will be good for the institutions and good for the television fans and good for the state of Texas could be bad for Texas families being separated. The traditional regional rival games could continue in some capacity through out of conference games. Well, those are my thoughts for the day.

the big 3 there, Florida, F State, and Miami weren’t always in the same conference and they turned out just fine. Even South Florida is outside of that, they’re ok.

The difference there as I see it
Is that those schools are located in huge have population areas around them in East Coast media markets that just love to pump up everything East Coast.. That is not the case for us. If we were to end up in the Pac whatever by ourselves we would disappear. Do you think that anyone, outside of Tech alumni and students would be waiting till 10 pm for games to start? And with all due respect to some of the folks on this board, but do we really believe that we have anything socially in common with people from the West Coast?
I believe the same is true for the aggies. I don’t know where everyone in the media gets the notion that adding the aggies to the sec all of a sudden opens up Texas to the sec and that the tv contract would be HUGE. Big enough that everyone in the sec would even say pay increases of, depending on who believe, between 2 and 4 million more per school per year then they are already making now. If thats true then adding the aggies is worth almost another $500 million to $1 billion to ESPN??
"There is no chance he will win, but if you think about it carefully he would be a pretty good candidate. Adding the Aggies
Allows the SEC to open those contracts back up. It isn’t that A&M is worth that much money, it’s that the conference contracts are currently undervalued. If the PAC can pull in what they did in the last year, the SEC rightfully should pull in more. All they have to do is wave those MNC trophies around, and they have a legit argument. A&M’s addition to the conference allows all of that to happen.
by RedRaiderForLife95 on Sep 14, 2011 10:45 AM CDT up reply actions
But do you think they are undervalued to the tune of 1 billion?

Possibly
That may be a little high, but I wouldn’t be surprised if adding A&M allows the SEC to up the contract by $750 M. It really is pretty hard to argue with those MNC’s, and there have been other times in the last several years where the winner of the SEC CG was going to the MNC regardless of who that winner was.

Now we are looking at maybe 2 or more billion dollars just to maintain what you already have now.

All I am saying is that schools in the "stable" conferences
have very little to gain from this expansion especially if a conference goes to 16 members.

I should have said in the Big 3
B1G, SEC, PAC 12

To me that's the interesting question
Adding one team allows the SEC to get those contracts opened back up, and allows the conference to get properly valued on the existing teams (and some value for the new one). I think adding three teams MIGHT get them to the $1.2 – $1.5 B range, but probably not much more than that.

That one of the the scheduling scenarios being considered for a 13 member SEC involves the aggies switching between divisions each year… It would be extremely funny to see the aggies passed around in the SEC for everyone’s amusement…

Absolutely
Both for the money and for the control. The SEC wants to expand on THEIR terms, and had to be nervous last year when everything was moving around. They’ve had a year to figure out a plan, and I find it incredibly hard to believe that Slive and Co. don’t have their top-10 list for the other three spots. The SEC was the conference that started the 12-team expansion, and they didn’t pick Arkansas and South Carolina because they were powerhouses.

that Tech is not all that socially compatible with the West Coast. If anything, the Longhorns are THE MOST socially compatible. I don’t have any proof, but I would guess that Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma St, and Utah would be the most conservative schools in the league, by a wide margin.

I could see an argument for the Arizona schools. I lumped them in with the 8 original teams, probably in error.
I can’t speak for all of the California schools, but I know for a fact that the four northwestern schools make Austin look pretty conservative, and the little I’ve seen makes me think the two SF schools are worse.

Got to disagree
As a Bay Area native whose parents are Oregonians and whose brother is a Seattle resident, I’ve got to correct your generalities.
1) the odd school out in the PAC is Wash. St. Lubbock is hugely more cosmopolitan than Pullman, yet the 2 student bodies would have little problem bonding. Also, Oregon State is the “farm school.” Big forestry program—think SFA State as the “Ag” school of Texas instead of TAMU—you do have a lot of hippie “tree-hugger” types, but OSU is not the “sophisticated place.” Tech is definitely classier.
2) Tech is clearly compatible with the Arizona schools—fact, they are closer in attitude to Tech than to any of the West Coast schools.
3) Oregon students have similar pretensions to UT students—UO used to be referred to by others as “The Country Club.” UO and OSU each have only 20,000 students. Remember—Oregon is still basically a rural state—Portland is a big city, BUT IT ISN’T D-FW.
4) Tech is different from Cal, UCLA, UW—but it isn’t foreign. Tech is Fresno State. Cal people don’t bother with Fresno St., because they don’t see it as a threat. Fresno is Fresno—midway between the Bay Area and LA, with aspects of both in the major agricultural region of the state. That’s Tech. Lubbock is Fresno.
5) Stanford is Stanford—the elite U on the Coast whose students don’t flaunt their wealth. USC is, well, “the University of Spoiled Children.”
6) “The Longhorns are the most socially compatible.” NO. The thing you all have to do first is disassociate the Sixth Street “Willie Nelson” Longhorns from the 101,000 “Hookemhorn” football Longhorns. The former group is clearly in sync with Berkeley Eugene peace-love people. Yes—The Drag is a “Little Telegraph,” but…they aren’t the sports fanatics. Longhorns—to the world—are crap-orange-wearing loudmoiuths who say “Hook ’em” to everyone, flash some gang-sign, have a band dressed in Buffalo Bob dime-store cowboy costumes, and think everything lives or dies with football. UT enlarged their stadium to over 100,000. Stanford and Cal have stadiums holding 75,000, but have now renovated to reduce their sizes to 55,000. UO’s holds less than the Jones, OSU’s 50,000. UCLA is lucky to get 40,000 in the 100,000 seat Rose Bowl. ON THE COAST FOOTBALL IS NOT THAT IMPORTANT.
7) Lastly—the most conservative school? Hands down—Utah. Great college, beautiful campus, wonderful academics—but right down the street from Mormon HQ. No. 2 is definitely Wazzu. Tech would be in the middle—just like Fresno State.

I'll grant you the football part
although the Huskies definitely like their football. Seattle natives have to root for the Huskies, most years that’s the closest thing they have to a pro football team. There’s a reason why most people in Seattle refer to the pro team as the “Sea-Turkeys”.
I’ve lived in Oregon and Washington. I’ll agree that Oregon St and Wazzu are conservative, if compared to their in-state counterparts, but I think both would still be considered pretty liberal by Texas standards.
On the other hand, we both agree that Utah is the most conservative. However, what do you wanna bet that they are considered the liberal school of that state, compared to BYU?

I never talk politics at a tailgate or football game
So who cares how they vote in Berkeley? They’re ranked the 8th best university in the world. Stanford is ranked 4th. It would be pretty awesome for Tech to be associated with Cal & Stanford. It should raise our game considerably. The combination of that & UT/A&M maxing attendance at 50,000 is going to push Tech up in the quality of incoming classes and university profile & research activity. I see nothing but good in this.

Agreed the politics don't really matter
We were all over the board in the SWC and Big XII too. Both conferences had serious issues, but politics wasn’t part of it.

I visited a friend in Fresno a long time ago.
I was amazed at how much it resembled Lubbock. I have kind of followed Fresno State since then. They never got into an AQ conference so they just never got the kind of recruits they needed to be a viable football team, definitely not over the long haul. Had they been a part of the PAC way back then, I have a feeling they could have at least matched Tech’s record over the last 30 years or so. Therefore, I agree, Tech & Lubbock are similar to Fresno & Fresno State, but better.

to sidestep tortious interference. The Pac has to say they are NOT interested. OU has to say that they want to save the Big 12…..all the time behind closed doors its kisses and hugs….That’s my read on the whole thing.
I still say, Larry Scott wants to expand. If aggy succeeds in getting to the SEC, the lever is tripped. OU and Okie Lite will go in a heart beat, then it’s in Texas’ court, if they refuse to go to the Pac….no way Scott allows the SEC a foothold in Texas with aggy, with out him getting one…..enter Texas Tech. So I think regardless of what Texas does…TT is headed west.
Now I’m sure Larry Scott would love for Texas to be no.# 15 and Tech no# 16….but if the horns won’t play ball…..Tech is not chopped Liver!

One thing that is worrying is that the more these rumors swirl
The less you see Tech in possible scenarios that Involve OU or UT…
An ACC move could mean that teams like KU or Mizzou make the leap. We could argue that the politicos in Texas would get involved, but they seem to have set a precedent with the aggie thing of not getting involved and I do not see them being able to control this anymore if it meant having to say no to Both UT and A&M.

Ok, I know we're supposed to avoid politics
so I won’t express my opinion of Perry either way. However, you bring up a good point. Doesn’t it seem a little ironic that the person who wants Texas to secede is trying to get the #1 job in the country he wants the state to part company with? To me that would kinda be like Castiglione (OU athletic director) trying to take over Beebe’s job.
I WILL express my opinion of Beebe, and point out that Castiglione would do a better job than Beebe. My roommate’s 4-month old chihuahua could do a better job.

"The trouble with quotes on the internet is that it is nearly impossible to discern if they are genuine." - Abraham Lincoln
If Texas goes to the ACC;
and OU and OSU go to the WSL, ATM is in the SEC, and TCU is in the Big East, and we stay in a watered down Big 12, which does have AQ status until 2016, no matter who is in the league, do we own the Texas Market.
And if we own The Texas market, does that change anything for Tech.
"I feel sorry for the guys," Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville said. "They fought hard tonight. We didn't look good on offense or defense at times, and at times we looked pretty good. It's just, I don't know. Weird game.
I'm not buying what you're selling there.
Just because UT, TCU, and aTm change conference allegiances, it changes nothing in regards to television markets. People in Austin who like UT will still watch UT games. People in Lubbock and DFW who like TTU will still watch TTU games. The television market, I think, will be pretty un-phased.
And, just because we have AQ status until 2016 (which I’m not so sure will stay around regardless of the bylaws if the B12 dwindles too far), doesn’t mean it’s desirable. Let’s say it does happen. Let’s say TTU makes an AQ bowl game 3 of the 5 years we have AQ status left in a weak, weak Big-whatever. What happens in 2016? Unless the B12 suddenly pulls nationally recognized teams from its behind, AQ goes bye-bye. And at that time, the conference shuffle will be winding down or done with solid and stable AQ conferences which are filled to capacity with no seat left at the table for TTU.
"They challenged us. They said, 'Here, try to run past us, try to run inside us.' And they were better at preventing that than we were throwing and catching it." --Mike Leach
but if we're playing other schools from the area, that increases our exposure there
for example, say we’re playing baylor and UT is playing maryland. So at a bar, you might have Tech and Baylor people for one game, but not likely would you have many maryland people caring too much. thence, you sort of increase your exposure there.
although i would say that effect would be negligible.

I am not the ACC comissioner but I teach at an ACC school.
I cannot see in my wildest dreams a scenario where the ACC adds four teams from that far away. Comm. There is a zero on the Richter scale over here about expansion. The only talk is preservation in case the SEC comes in like a pirate…… (wink). This conference may get left behind because there is no movement. We are happy, we are secure, we are set at 12 teams.

Get Away From UT Unless They Go Pac-12
I think that the one thing which has come out most in all of this conference realignment is that all of the schools are acting in their best interests without regards to other schools. If we were going to do that then I think our options are pretty clear, we should try for the Pac-12 with or without UT. If we can’t get an invite to the PAC-12, then we try to team up with TAMU in the SEC. I have zero desire to try to follow UT to the ACC. The article does a good job of giving reasons why UT wants to head to the ACC, but it is all cover except for the LHN. That is the only reason why UT doesn’t want to head to the Pac-12 and the reason why our move out to the Pac-12 didn’t happen last year. I am tired of having to deal with UT who is only interested in looking out for their best interests. Hopefully our leadership in Lubbock will do the right thing and have us ditch UT if they make the decision to go to the ACC and get us into one of the better options for Tech with the Pac-12 or SEC.

DOEGE AND MOORE HOOKING UP: That is a good good. We can see a valid threat with this pair, it is not enough to win in the Big12, IMHO, because the quality of athletes and coaching of opposing defenses will catch up to a go to guy. Yes, Doege did find 7 other receivers, but their contribution to the whole of the game does not consitute a valid threat—either as individuals or as a group. This has to be a priority…and it shows that the OC may be thinking similarly with the changes in the two deep for the coming game.
FORCING TURNOVERS AND PORUS RUSH DEFENSE: Turn overs are good !! One might ask which is preferred, lots of turn overs or a low rushing numbers…LOL !
Either way, the opening game is not much of an indicator of what the team can do on defense as much as an indicator that the defense as a whole is pretty immature. I cannot project off of last game to the current game…but I am looking for significant improvement in team defense…from everyone !!!
NEWCOMERS PERFORMED: I find the number of youngsters / newbies on the field last game to be encouraging. At the least it is an indicator that the staff thinks they have some talented players who need to be on the field at least getting experience. One comment from the post game that rings is that the staff looked at the opening game more from the perspective of fall camp than pre-season. Continuing to look at who can play where and do it well…the coming game may be a bit of contiuation of that but more in the context of a first game.
Guys like the receiving corps who did not make impact against Texas State are watching on Saturday rather than starting…or being in the two deep. I like that…even as much as I have wanted to see the experienced guys enjoy success this season…same on defense.
NEED MORE FROM RUNNING BACKS: This staff is commited to TTU running the football effectively…very effectively. Part of that is the RB’s and part of that is the OL, I am not so much a student of the game to be able to differentiate who is doing what well as a play is executed…but I cannot lay it all at the feet of the rb’s.
I am thinking that while we all know that executing an offense is much more difficult than defense, the plays are timing dependent and require precision, the running game seems to lag the passing game in being ready. Part of that is the summer is focused on 7 on 7 passing or the like. Hard to practice running when there is no one to block. Then there is the shallow two deep on the LOS…but it all has to come together for the staff’s philosophy to work. My best observation is the 2nd half of the last game, we did not do great but we did show that the offense has a lot of potential when we get more people playing their roles well.
I will not be surprised at another slow start on offense come Saturday. I expect a better start on defense, improvement in rushing defense (which may be really difficult to show by the stats alone), and better coverage in the secondary…Texas State gave away some opportunties that could have made our defense look worse than it did.
Finally, we must win the game, even ugly.
Living large in Texas...Texas forever.
That base nickel setup
is going to hurt us against run-heavy teams until the linebacking corps grows up. A bit disappointed that Cqulin has apparently plateaued after showing early promise, which leaves the interior to two freshman o_0
The upside to that is that this will only really hurt us in conference play against, um, A&M… and UT, Baylor, and uh I guess OSU and OU when they feel like it. Oh yeah K State also.

I have a feeling that when all is said and done, there will be legions of pissed off Red Raider fans…Our admin is working hard behind the scenes to get a solo invite somewhere, but I’m thinking most won’t like what they’re working on…hint: it’s not Pac.
Sure as hell aint SEC
Gotta be ACC
