What if we got paid rivers of money for it?

The degree of reactionary resentment to anything and everything Texas makes me feel like I’m on an Aggie site.

If we get paid money to allow the LHN to televise our games, then what’s the problem? Let’s get rich on their stupid network?

Go register. Or else.

by Skin Patrol on Sep 15, 2011 6:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I see now that we won't get paid.

Because no one else was going to televise the game.

In which case, the options are:

1) watch on LHN
2) not on TV at all

Go register. Or else.

by Skin Patrol on Sep 15, 2011 6:42 PM CDT up reply actions

What if Texas and Tech are both in the top 15 at that point? I know it’s unlikely, but what if?

Is this another issue of ESPN saying Tech has to allow it, or the game doesn’t get shown, no matter what?

by RedRaiderForLife95 on Sep 15, 2011 7:05 PM CDT up reply actions

A very good point and I hadn't thought of it.

Makes me wonder why ESPN and Fox pick their games at the beginning of the season, rather than waiting on a week-by-week basis.

Is the assumption that, in a world without the LHN, then either ESPN or Fox would have picked up the game if both Texas or Texas Tech are in the top 15? If so, shouldn’t they be able to pick the game up over LHN regardless?

Go register. Or else.

by Skin Patrol on Sep 15, 2011 7:15 PM CDT up reply actions

I was wondering this too...

Why do you pick the games without seeing one of the field? We have a brand new team with a new coach, so it might be a big deal in January, but do we know this in Sept? What if the marquee matchup that night are two dumpster fire programs?

Guess I’m just irritated by ut more and more.

by freakinout on Sep 15, 2011 7:33 PM CDT up reply actions

What incentive does ESPN have to move that game off of LHN?

If both teams ARE in the top 15, that just gives them even more reason to put it on LHN, because then people will start asking for it.

by RedRaiderForLife95 on Sep 15, 2011 11:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Fox would otherwise pick it up, I would hope.

I agree with you that ESPN has a perverse incentive to relegate its game to the LHN (i.e., not pick it up), particularly in the midst of its on-going negotiations with cable providers to get them to put LHN on their basic package.

Go register. Or else.

by Skin Patrol on Sep 15, 2011 11:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Not at all then.

by RRaider5355 on Sep 15, 2011 9:10 PM CDT up reply actions

If Tech was getting paid for their TV appearance

I would be more inclined to agree. Since Tech gets absolutely no money out of being on LHN, I’ll listen to it on the radio. I will NOT support LHN in any way, shape, or form, unless it’s clear that Tech gets some benefit out of it.

by RedRaiderForLife95 on Sep 15, 2011 11:15 PM CDT up reply actions

I'd rather not give money to UT to do so.

Can’t we put it on our online thing too? They may have UT"s 3rd tier rights, but they don’t have ours.

by RdrPwr on Sep 16, 2011 7:31 AM CDT up reply actions

I'll bet it's a home team rights deal

And I doubt Tech paid Texas State any of the money they collected from people signing up for the online stream of the game last week.

If that's the case, that isn't right either

I’m not saying the money should be split 50/50. However, if Tech paid TSU 25%-33% of the proceeds from that, it would be fair. If Texas wanted to pay Tech that same range, I would be far more okay with this.

Ironically, per LAJ’s David Just and George Watson, TTU Kirby Hocutt said this (and I just put up a FanShot with other quotes):

The athletic directors decided Monday the Longhorn Network would be allowed to air conference football games if it had the consent of both teams and the league office.

Hocutt said airing a Tech-Texas game on the Longhorn Network is unlikely.

"We would much prefer to be on a neutral broadcast with neutral announcers and neutral branding and advertising," Hocutt said. "Red Raider fans don’t want to watch the Texas Tech-Texas football game on the Longhorn Network, so it’s that simple."

Hocutt stressed that many of the issues discussed Monday are far broader and more complex than "just high school content being aired on the Longhorn Network," and a solution may not come in the immediate future.

"This is an issue that would have a significant impact on current NCAA legislation that pertains to recruiting and prospective student-athletes," Hocutt said. "It’s much more far reaching than just one particular university’s network. We really have to review the entire NCAA manual and bylaws in which we operate under to fully grasp the depth of the issue."

If this is true I recommend finding a “fuzzy link” for streaming online like alot of folks did in Austin…. During the TU vs Rice game … They can’t even get the LHN in Austin because Time Warner, Grande com, direct tv, and the dish don’t carry this awsome piece of programing….

Just say no.

In the 1960s, I had to wait till the day after to find out who won. I read the newspaper. now, I would rather wait a week than even find the LHN on my remote. It is theirs, and it will be theirs even if they have to share it.And they won’t. Even if they say they will, they won’t. JMHO and decades of dealing with “them.”

by RRaider5355 on Sep 15, 2011 9:14 PM CDT reply actions

But why rob the rest of us?

If we want to watch Texas Tech basketball games, why would you take that away from us?

How is Texas Tech better off? The LHN is already in a lot of living rooms in Texas, and having our game against an in-state rival televised (if only on the LHN) is better than not having it televised at all.

If we really want to spite Texas we can join C-USA. Do you think that’s better for Texas Tech, though?

Go register. Or else.

by Skin Patrol on Sep 15, 2011 10:06 PM CDT up reply actions

How is Tech better off?

The announcers will belittle Tech the entire game, because they’re required to be ultra pro-Longhorn or they get fired. That ugly orange logo will be on the screen the whole game. Tech is getting no money at all out of the deal. And as long as ESPN controls that damned network, there is a huge conflict of interest in how the 1st-tier games are selected.

I guess I look at it this way: If I don’t watch the game, I don’t help put money into the coffers of Texas. If I do watch the game, that justifies (to them) why they should be allowed to bully everyone else in the conference, and encourages them to continue.

by RedRaiderForLife95 on Sep 15, 2011 11:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Re:

I doubt the announcers would belittle Tech the entire game, as that is unprofessional and would not sit well even with UT fans. (Tech’s local football broadcast, for instance, does not belittle opposing teams the entire game, even if they do have a decidedly Texas Tech bias.) In any case, I don’t much care what the announcers say, because I don’t watch basketball games, generally, to hear what announcers have to say.

If the game is televised, at all, on any network, the UT logo will be on the screen the whole game, because it is an away game and UT puts their logo on their court.

I agree that there is something like a conflict-of-interest in how the 1st-tier games are selected. But if Fox doesn’t want to pick this game up 2nd-tier, then what else is there to say? If Fox doesn’t want the game, I can’t really fault ESPN for not wanting it, either. If the only provider that will take it is the LHN, so be it.

If you don’t want to help Texas makes money, fine, but that’s now directly opposed to helping Texas Tech. If we benefit from being on the LHN (rather than not at all) then let’s benefit, and if Texas also benefits, so be it. It doesn’t need to be zero-sum proposition. And just watching the game will not justify Texas’s bullying of anyone else. We don’t have to put up with bullying. We can always push back. Symbolic boycotts of our own basketball games seems like a very inefficient way of fighting back against Texas’s bullying… chopping off nose to spite the face, etc.

Go register. Or else.

i just got through that. wish I could have been there for the back and forth…

by kevinkinsler on Sep 16, 2011 12:32 AM CDT up reply actions

I won't boycott the game

I’ll be more than happy to listen to it on the radio. If it’s picked up on Tech’s All-Access internet feed, I’ll watch it in an instant. I might even be willing to watch it on UT’s All-Access feed if it shows up there, because I have the all-school package. There are plenty of ways for me to support the team without supporting that particular network.

And I disagree about it being inefficient. I think the ONLY way to fight back against the extortion that ESPN and Texas have been attempting is to refuse to watch LHN for any reason. Find other media sources to support the team. Make it very clear that Tech HAS the support, but LHN does not, especially when my team is being shown on TV and is not getting a penny of the proceeds for that broadcast.

by RedRaiderForLife95 on Sep 16, 2011 12:57 AM CDT up reply actions

not watching the network isn't fighting back

it’s not really doing anything.

If you want to fight, you’re gonna have to use bigger weapons than your remote control.

by kevinkinsler on Sep 16, 2011 1:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Ok, I'm certainly willing to hear ideas

What other ways do we fight back against the extortion that ESPN tried to pull on Tech for the football game?

Please understand. When I called my AT&T, I didn’t tell them not to carry LHN. I understand they are out to make a buck, and I actually don’t care if LHN fails or not. What I DID tell them is that I refuse to help fund it myself, and if they put it on the basic package, I will find another company to provide my TV content. It needs to be on the premium packages, or even better, treated as a premium channel, like HBO.

I also want to see someone (Beebe this SHOULD be you) stepping in and clearly defining the guidelines by which ESPN can pass games up on Tier 1. ESPN absolutely should not be allowed to sell Tier 1 games to Fox in order to talk them into passing up Tier 2 games, just so the games fall to Tier 3. That is how the Tech-Texas football game almost ended up on LHN in the first place. ESPN has a clear conflict of interest, and someone (again, where are you Beebe?) needs to get that cleaned up.

However, if that conflict of interest was removed, I wouldn’t really care if LHN succeeds or not. After reading that other thread on BO, I think you and I agree there, Skin. As you said over there, Tech has to look after its best interests. I think you and I disagree over here, because every time ESPN is allowed to force a conference game onto that network, it sets more precedent for it to happen again. If ESPN and Fox legitimately didn’t want any of those three games, fine. However, if we suddenly see one of the Kansas/Texas basketball games on Fox instead of ESPN (or both of them), then you can be pretty certain that this whole thing was contrived.

Either way, I continue having issues with Tech getting none of the proceeds for the game. Tech may not have the national brand that Texas has, but we do HAVE a brand, and it’s obviously worth something or ESPN wouldn’t keep pulling this. I would expect Tech to share some cash if the situation was reversed.

by RedRaiderForLife95 on Sep 16, 2011 1:23 AM CDT up reply actions

I think your second paragraph is the biggest reason for the recent move to realignment related to the LHN

Since Beebe doesn’t have the balls/brains to do anything about it, schools are wanting to find stronger conference leadership which is wiling to look after their interests beyond their payout for slutting themselves out to UT.

by kevinkinsler on Sep 16, 2011 1:57 AM CDT up reply actions

On that one, you and I agree 100%

As I said in another thread, my room-mate’s 4-month old chihuahua could do a better job than Beebe.

by Btech on Sep 16, 2011 7:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Which I have done on more than one occasion

However, if LHN gets enough demand because of these kinds of situations, ESPN will rightfully throw that at the providers, who will then feel justified in putting it on the basic service that ESPN is demanding. To me, the best fight against that is to NOT help LHN with its ratings.

by RedRaiderForLife95 on Sep 16, 2011 8:34 AM CDT up reply actions

That's a principled position.

And I respect you for taking it, but we’ll have to agree to disagree.

I think the LHN is going to happen irrespective of what we do, though I’m willing to put up a passing fight (calling cable providers, etc.) in the interim. But when it does happen, I think Texas Tech has some real opportunity to be the largest incidental beneficiary of it, as we’re now the last remaining in-state rival to Texas. Whether they want to or not, the LHN is going to be televising some Texas Tech athletic events that would not otherwise be televised. We will be talked about on that network, and I will try my best to enjoy whatever it is they are saying. (I live in Austin, as well, so I view the odds of LHN ending up on my basic cable package approaching certainty, at least in the long-term.)

At the end of the day, Texas already has its check and have already gotten rich off the network. I can’t do anything about that now.

Go register. Or else.

by Skin Patrol on Sep 16, 2011 9:06 AM CDT up reply actions

This is really very funny;

The reason nobody else can produce their own network is because they are tied to conference agreements that bind them to their conference. If you are in the SEC, BIG, and WSL, then you have a Conference Network, and you share revenue equally.

Ohio State, Alabama, LSU, USC, anyone can do it. But you will have to resign your conference affiiation and go independnet, or you are a member of the fragmented Big 12-3-9.

Only the Throns, BYU, and Norte Damn believe in independence. We can see how well it has worked for Norte Damn, monehy is more important than winning. Just ask BYU.
